Epilogue
The moisture ladened flesh of their bodies glided against each other easing the friction into a smooth dance of skin along skin, the readiness of her body easing his passage home over and over and over. The flex of his fingers dug into her hip, holding her still as he steadily pumped into her. But she could not endure the command to not move. The pleasure of his thrusts played counterpoint to his steadying hand, urging her to move and slowly her body flared to life rising to meet his halfway, savoring the slide of his shaft deep into her.
All around them articles of clothing, suitcases, bags of groceries lay in haphazard array as if a whirlwind had blown through and trashed the room and hallway, but it was not the cause of an outside gale. Even now, the inward storm raged. Fingers dug into his scalp, anchoring her as she felt the force of the storm increase with his accelerated plunge into her depths. Breath snatched from her, she writhed in panting need.
Eyes bore down into hers, glittering a promise she knew all too well he would keep and hers answered even as they desired to close and turn her senses inward. But she could not look away; she didn’t want to lose sight of him. All that was happening was reflected in that crystal blue gaze. Every minute movement threatened to overtake them. Even as she struggled for breath, her hips gyrated into tempting him to give her more, always more.
He felt the infinitesimal grip deep within her, the slight squeezing around him signaling her imminent leap into the heavens. Eyes on her all the way, he moved harder, faster, forcing the breathless pants into low-throated moans bordering on the knife’s edge between pleasure and pain. He wanted her to fall apart; needed her to shatter. For in that tiny second between pause and leap they would find that meshing of hearts in the frantic twining of their bodies.
The pace quickened along with their breathing. Eyes on one another they pushed into and pulled away. Silence coated the room in a thick glaze except for the increasing moans and sighs slipping from one to the other. Strong hands slid under her, tilting her hips. Small but strong hands slid down his sweaty back to curve into the hard flesh of his cheeks. Legs, slim and supple wound around him. The ‘yes’ that hissed from him stuttered her heart. A tiny cry whimpered from her warning him of no return. Still they watched, unashamed of losing themselves to the power of the other.
She was there, right there, bucking faster, begging him to strike harder. He complied and her hands stole up his back and hooked around his shoulders. The flutters deep within hinted of the explosion seconds before it detonated. Her cries found their way into his ears and along the nerves that led to his shaft. Flashes of light began to cloud his vision. And then…
She came. Back arching off the carpet, nails piercing his shoulders, she lost herself to the hard contractions, blinding her to everything but what he gave her. Her walls clamped and released in frantic pulses, compelling him to ride her even harder, his own release swirling deep within him, tipping him right over the edge. Locked to her, he froze and his seed gushed into her, his body shaking in uncontrollable spasms, the world falling swiftly away as he lost sight of everything but the sensation of her, only, always her. He groaned as he emptied himself, giving her everything he was, everything he would ever be, his heart, even his very soul.
As always, when it was this powerful, he collapsed into her waiting arms and they struggled through the aftermath together, heart beating into heart, breaths harsh and ragged, bodies anchored to one another as they drifted through the remnants of the tempest of their own making.
A sigh whispered from Natalie and Hayden lifted his head to search the wonderment in her stunned eyes. Damp strands of hair stuck to his neck as a smile lit his face.
“Wow,” Natalie breathed, her own lips breaking into a radiant smile. “Just when I think there couldn’t be anything to top the last time, we go to new heights.”
Hayden chuckled and glanced at the spilling bags of groceries littered just inside the front door. “Our food is going to spoil.” He paused just long enough to grin leeringly at her. “But it was worth it, even if we have nothing to eat the rest of the time we’re here.”
Natalie giggled and drew the willing man back down to her kiss. A growl reverberated in his throat drawing a giggle from her and when he lifted his head again she met the intense blue gaze.
“I would hate to start our married life with food poisoning.” He screwed up his face at the thought of what that would entail and gingerly lifted himself away from her. Face painted in mock disappointment at his abandonment, she sat up and reached for his t-shirt as he tugged his pants on.
“Come on,” Hayden reached down and pulled his new bride to her feet, “let’s get the food put away so I can give you your present.”
The word ‘present’ pricked at her ears and Natalie followed him, the curiosity too tempting.
“Present?” Natalie hoisted a bag onto her hip, her eyebrows raised in expectation. “You gave me a wedding present already. At the reception last night, remember?”
“Did I?” Hayden’s voice mumbled from the refrigerator where his head disappeared as he put the milk and cheese away.
Natalie jammed her hands on her hips and waited. Soon, he reappeared unable to hide the sheepish grin.
“Oh, that,” he waved the thought away, reaching for the produce. “That was nothing.”
“You call a monstrous donation to the Israeli Children’s Hospital nothing?” Natalie gaped, secretly thrilled with his stringing her along.
“Well, not nothing,” Hayden conceded, turning to look at her, his eyes making a slow survey of her well-loved form. “Hey, you look pretty hot in nothing but my shirt.”
Natalie felt herself blush, a heat rushing from her toes to the top of her head.
“Don’t distract me,” she stammered, crossing her arms over her chest.
A wicked laugh rumbled from Hayden as he crossed to her and scooped her up. She squealed and clutched him tightly around the neck, dropping the loaf of bread on the table.
“All the perishables are taken care of,” he announced, carrying her back into the living room. “Now, let’s just concentrate on us.”
Hayden plopped onto the couch, promptly claiming Natalie’s mouth. The playful kisses spiraled into a more heated exchange and before either knew it, Natalie was on her back, Hayden deep inside her once more. A moan of passion passed between them and her legs drew up giving her leverage to rock against him with a more solid rhythm.
“If…this is my present…can we stay this way…f…forever?” Natalie panted, the inevitable conclusion curling its way higher.
“This isn’t your present,” Hayden whispered, his hand leaving her neck and falling onto the floor, groping under the couch. A moment later his hand appeared, a small box in his grasp. “This is it.”
Natalie saw the box, but couldn’t bring herself to wonder about it as the coaxing pull of his shaft led her to forget anything else. Nothing mattered but this miracle they created every time they came together. The signal tightened low in her belly and she groaned his name, a breathless plea on her lips. Hayden shifted his hips higher and rode her faster, digging his hands around her hips, his grunt of satisfaction driving her over the top.
“I love you,” he gasped right before she fell, her hands tunneling into his damp curls, her eyes seeing into him a moment before he tore her from the earth.
Hayden followed, his body taking control and a few strokes later lost himself inside her, his body shivering in the pleasure of joining to her. The kisses she stole from him left him even more breathless, her words of love arrowing straight into his heart, their aim more perfect than Cupid’s could ever be.
The vanishing glow of sunset announced the night’s first star’s arrival. The dreamy edges of twilight crept towards the horizon, painting the sky a vision of sleepy purples and soothing pinks, blurring with swirls of soft oranges and reds. No blaze of glory left for the sun as night approached waving its magic wand, blending the rough edges of day to the misty mix of dusk.
Minutes flowed by as they rested in each other’s arms, sleepily watching the night descend out the window. Natalie shifted under him, her mouth resting against the salty flesh of his neck.
“My present,” she reminded, her words tickling him so much that he shrugged his shoulders and chuckled.
“It fell to the floor,” he lifted his head to stall her attempts to tickle him again. Blindly he reached for it, lifting it and setting it on her chest. Bracing himself he raised so he could watch her fumble to open it, his length still nestled in her.
Natalie opened the box; her mind unable to guess what he could possibly give her that could top being her husband. She lifted her head and peered inside, her eyes widening in shock. Eyes large and burnished to a mahogany glow stared at him as her fingers pulled the item out.
In her fingers, dangling between them on a ring was a shiny key. Natalie’s throat clogged with tears that filled her eyes and blurred his face to her.
“Hayden,” she whispered.
Hayden watched a tear slip free and pulled himself away from her to settle her onto his lap, his hand covering hers where the key lay tightly clasped.
“It’s the key to this bungalow,” he explained, softly, his voice skittering along her spine. “It’s yours.”
“Hayden,” Natalie whispered again, her voice hushed and awed. “How?”
“I bought it from my grandfather,” Hayden said, a tiny smile creasing his cheek. “I figured if I owned it, then it would be mine to give. I wanted you to have this place as a reminder of when everything finally came together for us.”
Natalie burst into tears, curling her arms around his neck and sobbing, her tears spilling down his chest. But it was all right. Hayden knew they were not sad tears, but tears of love and so that made them bearable.
Suddenly, Natalie wrenched herself away and scrambled to where her coat lay, leaving Hayden sitting on the couch stunned. Pulling his pants on again, he watched her shrug into his shirt and fish something from her coat pocket. In moments she was back on his lap holding out a tiny box.
“What’s this?” Hayden asked, his long fingers taking the box.
“Open it,” Natalie sniffled, then hiccupped.
Lifting the lid, Hayden looked down into the box and back at her. Speechless, he pulled a key identical to hers from the box.
“I don’t understand.”
“I bought the cottage from your grandfather,” Natalie wiped at her tears, a watery smile lighting her face. “I wanted to give it to you as a gift for making me complete that night you brought me here. I wanted it to be mine to give to you.”
Hayden smiled, a smile that beamed straight into her and lit all the places that would never be dark again. Arms gathered her close and lips found hers kissing her once, twice, then for a long time.
When he finally let her go he gazed at her for moments, falling in to the love she kept for only him.
“My grandfather gave me a letter yesterday at the reception when he gave me the key and told me to read it after I gave you my present.”
“He did?”
Hayden nodded and got up to fetch the letter. Sitting beside her, he opened it and held it out with one hand, the other arm circling around her. Quietly, he read:
‘Hayden and Natalie,
By now you know that both of you had the exact same idea. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell either one of you what the other was doing. When you both approached me to buy the bungalow I didn’t know what to do. Obviously, this place means a great deal to you. I would have given it to you as a gift when I realized it, but then I figured the two of you wanted to own it to gift it to each other. So, I was left with no choice but to accept the money from both of you and keep my big mouth shut until now. Because you both wanted to give each other this place, I am only taking half of what you both paid me, that way it belongs to both of you just as you both belong to each other. Love each other. Listen to each other. And if you fight, come to this place and revel in making up. Never forget why this place means so much to you and you will never forget why you loved and married each other in the first place. May you both be blessed with the desire to work hard and stay committed to one another from now until the end of time.
Love, Grandad.’
“I guess he’s the only one who figured out we’re not really honeymooning in the Caribbean,” Hayden smiled, folding the letter. “He gave no clue at the reception last night that he knew. He probably even knew where we stopped on the drive from New York to here.”
“And he’s certainly not going to tell anyone where we are,” Natalie breathed, her head resting on Hayden’s bare shoulder. “Remind me to give him a big hug and a kiss when we see him again.”
“Yeah, me too.”
Natalie giggled and tilted her head to meet his smiling eyes. “I love you so much. You saved my life in more than one way that day.”
“I saved my life, too, you know,” he whispered tenderly. “You are by far the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Natalie’s eyes teared up again and Hayden sighed and stood up, pulling her with him.
“If you’re going to cry again, I’m taking you to bed,” he swept her into his arms once more. “To our bed, in our special place, where no one else is allowed. This is our world now. Yours and mine. And if you ever fight with me, I’m dragging you here until you realize that you are the most important thing in my life. And if I ever seem to forget that, you can kidnap me and bring me here to remind me so I don’t lose the most precious thing I have.”
“Oh, I think I can do that,” Natalie promised softly, snuggling deep into his arms before gently teasing, “you’ll never be able to get away from me.”
Hayden settled Natalie on the wide bed and crawled into her waiting arms. Leaning over her he traced a finger over lips still swollen from his kisses.
“As if I’d ever want to,” he cupped her cheek, his thumb sweeping across the soft skin. “I’m yours forever, sweetheart.”
Natalie smiled up into the precious face she loved so much and whispered, “Forever will never be long enough.”
The lips covering hers, teasing her mouth open agreed wholeheartedly.
