Once that show aired, the public only wanted to know more. Every television and radio show wanted Vin for an interview. With a press tour on the horizon he considered them all. It was when Dave receive a call from the Oprah show that he agreed to open the door to his home and himself. The show would be done in two segments one he’d film in Chicago and the other they’d tape in our home. And she actually wanted to interview me. When that day arrived I was seven months pregnant and just as much excited as I was nervous.
"Over the years Vin has always been careful to keep his personal life his own. It had been a semi-successful journey until two months ago when news show aired news of mar marriage to his long-term girlfriend, Lakeshia. And solidified a rumor that Vin had indeed become a father. When I visited Vin in their southern California home, for the second half of my interview, we had a chance to talk about just that." Oprah explained. "So, tell me about Keshia."
Taking a deep breath Vin replied, "What do you wanna know?"
"Are you happy?" she asked.
"Yes." Vin replied.
"So, why keep your marriage a secret?" she asked.
"Because my personal life is just that, personal. But have you ever been so happy with someone, that you wanted to keep them all
to yourself,...that’s the way it is." He replied.
"What separates Keshia from the rest of the women you have dated.?" Oprah asked.
"She understands me, she respects my work ethic. I am a work-a-holic. But most importantly she inspires me to do things I never thought I would do."
"How has fatherhood changed you?" she asked.
"It's definitely made sleeping a lot harder but I’m a lot more focused. At one time I only had to succeed for me now, it's for them."
Watching Vin from off camera, I was touched by ever answer he’d given. I was very uneasy as they suited me with a microphone. This was the first time I actually had to do an interview. When it was time I wed ied into our living room where Vin was sitting opposite Oprah. Vin and I were dressed similar. Dressing up a pair of blue jeans with, button down white tops. Vin took my hand in his and after a short greeting session she began asking me questions.
"So how did you two meet? Or how did you end up becoming Vin’s assistant?" she asked.
"By chance. I had been working part-time for an agency doing support work. Assisting top level executives, a few celebrities here
and there. Mostly for emergencies, if someone became sick, quit or was fired in some situations. Some assignments were for a few days, some a little longer. One day I got a call from the agency I was working for, they asked me if I would be interested in a more permanent assistance position and I took it. At the time I didn’t know who I was gonna be working for." I answered.
"Was he a good boss?" she asked.
I looked at him smiled and answered, "he was fair."
"Did you always like him?" she asked.
"I always liked him as a person. The other stuff came later." I said.
"So when did you realize your feelings for him were or had changed?" she asked.
"It was when I found myself calling him just to find out how his day was. Things like that." I replied.
"How about you Vin?" She asked.
"I knew when she didn’t call to see how my day went because I would be upset." He said laughing. "I don't think people get it. As my assistant we spent a lot of time around one another but we didn't spend a lot to time together. I'd have to go on location and it would be months, sometimes, before we where in the same city. I found myself making up reasons to bring her along, just to have her near me. I knows sis silly."
"Is he romantic?" she asked.
"Yes. He’s flowers, candy, candlelight everything." I said smiling.
"When he proposed to you, were you surprised?"
"Surprised! I was shocked!" I said.
"Why?" she asked.
"You know how sometimes you will go to your favorite restaurant or to the place you met or had your first date, he didn't do that. He
showed up, in the pouring rain, we were drenched and he got down on one knee and asked." I explained.
"I had to ask before I chickened " Vi" Vin interjected, ling.ing.
"And you were married on June 15th?" She asked.
We both agreed.
"Then the twins came along?" she asked.
"Mark and Miracle. Yes." I said.
"Miracle, that is a beautiful name. There’s a story behind that name?" She said.
"Yeah, the entire time we were pregnant, we thought we were having one baby. Through all the tests and ultrasounds. When we went into the deliver, Mark was born and everything was fine. After a few minutes, they told me I had to leave. I was panicking. They took me one way and Mark another. I didn’t know what was going on." Vin said.
"What was happening?" Oprah asked.
"My uterus was contracting still but Mark’s placenta wouldn’t deliver. They didn’t know why. Then they realized the fetal monitor was still picking up a fetal heartbeat. When they got it all together and checked me again Miracle’s head was beginning to crown. When she was born, she wasn’t breathing on her own so she didnry. ry. They suctioned her mouth and nose. Got her warm and she’s been screaming every since." I said.
"How much did she weigh?" she asked.
"Five pounds. The doctor’s said that she wasn’t supposed to make it for several reasons. He called her a miracle. So that’s what her Daddy named her." I said, girlishly smiling and looking over at Vin.
"Is he a good Dad?" she asked.
"Yes. He’s the best. Honestly, I don’t think he knows how to fail." I said.
"Do you know what the new baby’s gonna be?" Oprah asked.
"No, we are waiting for the surprise, hoping it wont be as big as it was the last time." I said and we all laughed.
"You want a boy or girl?" she asked.
"Either is fine with me but I think Vin wants a boy." I said.
"Your just gonna tell on me like that. I don’t want a boy but I wouldn’t be too upset if it was a boy." he said laughing.
"Are you gonna have anymore kids?" Oprah asked.
"Please Oprah, one at a time," I said grabbing my chest, laughing. "I don’t know, are we gonna have anymore kids?" I looked to Vin and asked.
"Umm, let’s just say if we do we are gonna stick with three a lot longer then we did with two." he said causing a roaring laughter. "This will be the last package the stork delivers to this address for awhile."
"How are you managing with Vin away so often and for long periods of time?" Oprah asked.
"It’s definitely been trying. But I am lucky to have family and friends around to help me out." I said.
"How do you feel about Vin’s fans reaction to the news of your marriage?" she asked.
"I have never had so many people, I don't know, judge me in my life." I said laughing. "But seriously I have mixed feelings about it. Some of their feedback has been great, others have been negative and sometimes cruel."
"How are you dealing with it, the negativity?" She asked.
"For the most part I have been trying to steer clear of it." I further explained.
"Can you still go out?" Oprah asked.
"Before I could go to the mall or out with my girl friends hardly noticed. Now that's impossible so I don't go out much anymore." I said.
"Do you have any regrets?" She asked.
"No," I said astonished that she would even ask such a thing. "I love this man regardless of his career choice. If I have to live this way then I will because I want to spend the rest of my life with him."
Vin cheeks turned rosey-red as he smilnd bnd blushed. He buried his head in my shoulder before knocking me a little kiss on the cheek.
"Will this be forever?" She asked.
"Yes." Vin and I said in unison. Then we smiled at one another and giggled.
After the interview, Vin and I took Oprah on a very short tour of the house. The tour ended in the nursery where Mark and Miracle were playing with Angie. When we stepped into the nursery Miracle took one look at Vin and said, "Da da." Oprah’s heart just melted and she fell in love with her on the spot. Born on the same day as their Dad, it was no shock to me that my children were indeed charmers. We didn’t allow them to be taped but we did give her one still picture of them to show when the show aired. It was an older picture and they’d changed so much since then I don’t think it mattered much anyways so I was fine with it.
By the time the Oprah show aired Vin was overseas promoting and premiering his movie. I’d went full steam into planning our vow renewal ceremony we decided to have on June fifteenth, that gave me a little over two months to have everything in order. Vin’s Mom came out from New York to help me along with Mark and Miracle until he returns from touring. It’s taken some getting use to but for the most part she has been amazing. Mark and Miracle have been enjoying every minute with her. This morning I decided to let her sleep in. I got the kids dressed and we went down into the office so I could try and call the people in the Marina event planners office yet again.
Holding the telephone up to my ear I paced from on side of the office to the other. I’d been trying to get in touch with the planners for more then three weeks and time if of the essence. I had been hoping to charter the glass bottom yacht I’d seen while watching a special on television. I fell in love with it on sight. The boat had two upper decks where they event would be held and a glass lower deck where you could observe ocean life swimming under your feet. It was the perfect place to hold the reception and privacy wouldn’t be an issue. I had to see it. Fifteen minutes passed and I was still on hold, when Mark came over crying. He pointed toward Miracle and said, “Mi-Mi.” He couldn’t say Miri so he’d given her his own nickname.
“Miracle, what did you do to your brother?” I asked.
She just smiled and covered her face. It wasn’t long before she stood up on her stout little legs and started to wobble over. Marky scrambled onto my lap, before she could reach me and she started to cry.
“You two are gonna drive Mommy mad.” I said hanging up the telephone. “Come Fatty.” I held out my arm to her.
I reared back on the sofa so I would have enough lap space for the both of them. They seem to need more babying time now then they did when they were younger.
A few months away from their first birthday and they both just began to walk. Mark first and then Miracle. They both were at the age where they called everyone Ma Ma if they thought it would get their attention. They called each other by name or some variation of each others name and had their fair share of disagreements. But they are still my angles. They attempted to talk on the telephone to Vin when he called and kissed the screen when he was on web cam. Things were going well with them. Miracle crawled into my lap. Baby didn’t want to share his space with either of them because he began to twist and turn inside of my tummy. Miracle’s face lit up.
“Baby.” She said.
“Yes, baby.” I said. “That’s very good, Miracle.”
“Good morning.” Mrs. Delora said peeking into the office. She was still dressed for bed.
“Good morning.” I said smiling.
“You guys are up and about already.” She said.
“We wanted to let you sleep in and I was calling the Marina again. I am about to give up and hope I find somewhere that I like just as much.” I said moping.
“We can do it together.” She said. “Now have you had anything to eat this morning.”
“No. I am not hungry.” I replied.
“Nonsense.” She said. “Mark and Miracle get down. Let’s go for a bottle and you too Mommy. You need something for the belly.” She smiled at me.
When we were done eating we hit the net and started looking for alternative venues for the wedding. Banquets halls, country clubs there were plenty of places around town but none I am attracted to the way of the boat. We came across a place called ‘The Celestial Gardens’. The pictures were amazing so we got them on the telephone, set up an appointment and later on that evening as the sun began to set we drove over. The pictures were nice but stepping into such beauty in real life amazed me. They only held events in the evenings, they had a natural botanical and night blooming flowers of all kinds. They offered several different lighting option but fo can candle light would be tnly nly way to go. You could have your wedding in the Garden and then a short walk across the grounds they had huge pavilions. Large enough to hold up to five hundred people if needed. I had my eye set on a smaller one with a dropped backing that opened up to a beautiful, man made lake. It was breathtaking.
