Orlando rushed to the set and found it completely deserted. He headed for the make-up trailers and they too were dark and locked up. “This had better not be someone’s idea of a joke.” He muttered to himself. Orlando headed for his own trailer. He immediately noticed the light was on. ‘What the...’
Orlando broke into a jog and reached the trailer quickly. As he reached for the door it swung open. There stood Kate surrounded by light from inside the trailer. She was smiling and looked pretty good. She wore a simple white t-shirt over low rise jeans. Her hair was wavy and loose. She smiled at Orlando’s temporary lack of words.
“You got the message!” She exclaimed. She stepped back and allowed him into the trailer.
“What are you doing here Kate?” Orlando’s eyes narrowed.
“Well I just thought you might like to know a little history on your new girlfriend.” Kate sat on the couch. Next to her was a laptop. She turned it towards Orlando. He backed up and looked at it like it might explode.
“It isn’t going to bite you!” Kate laughed. “I just want you to look at this newspaper article I found.”
“Why? I mean what could you have possibly found that Kellie hasn’t already told me?” Orlando asked. He was reluctant to admit that he didn’t know much about her past, but hoped she’d tell him something soon.
“I know she hasn’t told you about this.” Kate said. “Seems she hasn’t told anyone she supposedly trusts.”
Orlando looked at Kate and then back at the lap top. He felt like it would be a betrayal to get any information from Kate. At the same time if it was something horrible he needed to know. Orlando sat down in a chair and brought the lap top closer. He began to read one of several article that Kate had found.
Kellie had fallen asleep on the couch. She wasn’t covered up and had curled up trying to stay warm. She never stirred as Orlando unlocked the door and entered. He quietly locked it behind him and then turned to stare at her sleeping form. He had been driving for what seemed like hours . Then he had sat on the beach crying and freezing. Unsure of what to do next. The articles had detailed things he wasn’t sure he ever wanted to know. Things he didn’t know if Kellie had ever planned on telling him. He felt betrayed and hurt. She hadn’t trusted him enough to tell him about her past.
Kate had showed him several different articles. One announced Kellie’s marriage to a US Marine. A few others were birth announcements for two children, a boy and a girl. Then there had been the article about a horrible car accident involving Kellie and her two children. She had been seriously injured and the children had died. There were articles that followed an investigation of whether or not she had been at fault. She had been acquitted. Then there was personal info that a hired investigator had found out. Kellie’s husband had been on active duty in Iraq when this had all happened. He had blamed her and asked for a divorce. He then had volunteered for a dangerous mission and had been killed. His family had then sued Kellie for wrongful death of her children and husband. In the end she had won. Orlando felt sick to think about what she had gone through. He now had answers about her scars and whole demeanor. He also felt the anger that she had not told him.
All the articles and interviews told of a housewife gone wild. There was speculation of infidelity on Kellie’s part. The accident had also been investigated and originally blamed on Kellie. Orlando never got to see the articles that exonerated her. Nor did he get to read interviews from people that knew Kellie and were able to break through the hype and speculation. The last one he read told of her leaving town mere month after burying her husband. Orlando’s emotions were out of control. He didn’t know what to do. Orlando stormed from the trailer. Kate made no move to stop him. He drove for what seemed like hours. Until he finally found his way back to the hotel.
Kellie had been dreaming about having her talk with Orlando. She felt someone staring at her and this caused her to awaken. She sat up to find Orlando staring at her. His eyes were red and blood shot. His whole appearance was haggard and oozed tension. “Orli?” She whispered.
Orlando looked at her. The look was menacing and cold, causing Kellie to hug herself. “What’s wrong?” She asked.
Before he could think of an answer Orlando saw Kellie’s lap top on the table. Kellie saw him staring at it and started to reach for it. “Don’t!” He barked. His voice raw with emotion. Kellie froze and she watched as he approached the table and turned the lap top towards him. Kellie hadn’t closed the file. This made it easy for Orlando to find her pictures and the medical reports. He was clumsy with the lap top, but eventually he got through it all. He didn’t open the gazette file. He assumed it held the same articles that Kate had presented to him.
Kellie hugged her knees and rocked back and forth. Orlando was scaring her. She’d never seen so much rage in a person’s eyes before. She watched as he continued clicking through the files. This was not how she intended for him to find out about her family. Suddenly it all clicked. Someone had told Orlando, but who? Had he had someone investigate her? Maybe is management company had? That was the only reasonable explanation. He hadn’t gone to do a scene, he’d gone to meet with someone who had information on her! Kellie felt her anger rising. Before she could reach her boiling point Orlando snapped the lap top shut. The click resonated in the room.
Orlando ran a hand through is hair and sighed. He looked everywhere but at her. Kellie silently pleaded for him to look at her or say something. Finally he did. “Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked. His voice was barely above a whisper and Kellie wasn’t sure if she had imagined him speaking or not. He hadn’t even turned to face her yet. When she didn’t answer he turned around and crossed the room to her. Orlando grabbed her arms and hauled her off the couch. His face was inches from hers. “Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked again.
“I didn’t know how. I was going to tonight.” Kellie answered. Her lips began to tremble and her eyes filled with tears. She searched his face for some sign that he believed her. Orlando’s face was like stone. His jaw was clenched and a storm raged in his eyes. He let go of her suddenly and she fell back onto the couch.
“I don’t know you, I don’t think I want to either.” He whispered.
“What? Orli, no! I wanted to tell you.” Kellie cried. She tried to grab his hand. He yanked it away and headed for the door. “I don’t recommend you being here when I get back.” He said. The door slammed behind him and echoed through the room. Kellie sat on the couch letting what had just happened settle on her. The confusion set in and she began to cry, not realizing Orlando had slid to the floor in the hallway outside and was doing the same.
