Sorry this has taken so long! It's been a really hectic month but I finally got this chapter done! yay! hehehe here it is
Chapter 12
The next few days were a whirl of feverishly shopping for a dress and making preparations for her new apartment. She had probably been through every dress and home decor shop in the city in the past three days. Though she couldn’t say that it was all a total loss; she had found a gorgeous dress and pretty much everything she needed for her new place. The only down side was that she was currently exhausted. She had skipped out on her morning run and instead, slept in. She relished in the fact that she rolled out of bed at some insanely late hour and felt completely justified in doing so. After rolling lazily out of bed, she had found her way downstairs only to find that the whole house was buzzing with maids, decorators and party planners. Distinct images of the old video game Frogger came to mind as she had attempted to cross the great hall and into the kitchen.
Once she had safely wedged herself into a corner; away from the bustling caterers and grasping sweet salvation in the form of steaming coffee, she drew in a deep breath. It was odd; she hadn’t felt this relaxed in a while. She had managed to stay cloaked from Ha-Jung’s radar and had spent a good amount of quality time with her mom whilst shopping, which most likely helped her stress level a great deal. She supposed that she was just settling in.
Everything about Yoochun and his feelings had sunk in; she wasn’t sure what she was going to do, but she figured that she would know when the time was right…so her mom said at least. She always made a point not to force something. Love can’t be forced, if it is, then is it really true love? She wasn’t sure if she was being philosophical or just making excuses; either way she didn’t care.
Adrienne brushed a few stray auburn hairs out of her face and took a long sip of coffee. She couldn’t help but smile when the tepid liquid began to warm her from the inside out. There were few things better in life than a nice warm mug of delicious coffee.
“Good morning Min, you’re up later than usual, are you feeling ok?”
Adrienne glanced up from her cobalt mug to see her mom dodging a disgruntled looking chef with a very large knife. She gave a satisfied smile, “Yeah, I slept in. Who knew that shopping could take so much out of someone? Want some coffee?” Adrienne asked, offering her mug. Her mother shook her head, “I’ve already had three cups today. You of all people know that I don’t reach human till halfway through my second mug. If I drink anymore my body will go into the shakes from all the caffeine.” She smiled before placing a motherly kiss on Adrienne’s forehead. “Have everything you need for tonight? Adrienne nodded as she took an apple from the small wooden bowl next to the coffee pot, “Yupp, all set to party.”
Her mother looked satisfied, “Good to hear. I, on the other hand…am about to go nuts! Your grandmother is looking at tonight as the “Let’s get Eun Hye back in the dating scene. I swear she has invited ever son of a business partner, friend, and or acquaintance in Seoul!”
Adrienne cringed at the thought of her grandmother parading her mother around to all the eligible bachelors that would be most certainly attending the festivities that evening. “Sorry…you know you could always feign illness. I will even back you up if she questions me about it,” Adrienne offered before taking a bite of her apple. Her mother shook her head and sighed, then rubbed her temples gingerly, “No, she will see right through me…no, I’ve come to terms with my fate. I will just have to grin and bear it….then eat lots of chocolate.” Adrienne laughed. Waving her half-eaten apple in the air as she navigated her way out of the kitchen, she shouted over the still bickering chefs, “Don’t say I never offered!
By the time the sun started to sink into the horizon, Adrienne was once again assessing herself in the mirror. “You would think that with all the time we spend together, you would at least attempt to flatter me more…” she shot her mirror a disapproving look. She ran her hands down the front of her new dress. The strapless pale pink gown drew in around her waist and billowed out at her hips creating a flattering silhouette. Her hand gently skimmed over the elegantly beaded front of the corset top and then continued over the satiny fabric of the angled skirt. She flounced it a bit, watching it drape perfectly down to then middle of her calves. She couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful dress, but for whatever reason, which she couldn’t begin to comprehend, she didn’t feel beautiful. She shrugged it off, refusing to let it spoil her mood. At least she didn’t have to do her own hair, that would have been a complete disaster and she would have had to have fallen back on the whole “feigning ill” routine she had hocked to her mother. Joo-Eun was kind enough to dress her hair for her, which now fell over her shoulders in soft waves.
She turned slightly and huffed in exasperation. She threw her arms up in defeat and flung herself onto her bed. Adrienne hated when she was in this sort of mood. Everything should be peachy, yet she felt on edge. Maybe it was just nerves. She laid her arm over her eyes in hopes that blocking out the light would ease her aching head. Thoughts of how she was going to approach Yoochun had been hounding her all day. She couldn’t get him out of her head! Not that having him in her head was that bad, but they weren’t up to mind ogling status in their relationship…at least not completely. So what if she had maybe slightly undressed him with her mind. It’s not like she hadn’t seen it before, abet even if it was sort of an accident. She grinned sheepishly at the memory of the half naked Yoochun in the dressing room.
Shooing away her current thoughts before they turned dangerous, Adrienne shifted her head and glanced at her clock, which was now reading seven pm exactly. “Weird…Joo-Eun should have come to get me,” she murmured to herself. Shrugging, she decided that Joo-Eun must be too busy with the guests that were arriving to come inform her that it was time to be fed to the wolves. She had snuck into the kitchen a few hours ago to swipe something off the caterer’s trays when she had over heard her grandmother making remarks about how she was going to “show off her lovely granddaughter to Korean society.” At the time, she had nearly choked on her contraband stuffed mushroom and now, Adrienne grimaced at the thought of being dragged around the grand party room and forced to talk to stuffy politicians and snobby socialites.
Rubbing her face slightly, she pulled herself out of bed. After checking her makeup and straightening her dress, she made her way to the party. As she descended the stairs she was assaulted by music, lights and the strong stench of too many fragrances. An array of crystal chandeliers flooded the great hall with warm light and the dark wooden floors gleamed with a shine that only an all day cleaning –and indeed there was an all day cleaning- could provide. Numerous people, decked out in what had to be some of the most expensive attire Adrienne had ever seen, were already scattered around the hall mingling with each other. Her steps slowed when she noticed that people had turned to see her enter the room. Warmth rose to her cheeks as she lowered her face, hoping that her hair would shield her from the onlookers. She quickened her pace and finally immersed herself amongst the crowd. She figured the sooner that she “lost” herself, the sooner her grandmother would give up looking for her, which she was undoubtedly doing at the moment.
Airy classical music floated around her as she scanned the guests to see if any of her friends had arrived. She did say seven sharp, but then she didn’t know how punctual her new friends were.
“Min!! Oh my, Min your dress is great!!” Adrienne whipped around to find Soo frantically waving at her. Adrienne smirked as she watched Soo literally dragging Jaejoong by the arm as she made her way towards her. “I never thought I would find out in this mess!”
“Hey! I’m so glad to see that you two made it. I must say, Soo, blue is definitely your color.” Adrienne complimented as she admired Soo’s knee length sapphire blue dress. Soo blushed slightly, “Oh well, thank you! I was so excited to hear about this party! It’s rare that I get a chance to get all dressed up,” she grinned at her boyfriend, “AND it’s rare that I see him dressed so nicely…” Jaejoong shot her a slightly annoyed glance, “I don’t know what you are talking about, I dress nicely all the time,” he retorted with a pout. Soo rolled her eyes before turning back to Adrienne, “Again, you look absolutely gorgeous. I adore that dress!” Adrienne’s cheeks warmed slightly at the compliment, “Oh…well thanks….soo….where is everyone else?” she asked, quickly changing the subject.
“Umm, they are here, because we all came together. Changmin is probably hovering over the catering trays. As for the rest of them, they can’t be far behind.” Soo pursed her lips as she scanned the crowd for the rest of their group. “Uhh ohhh… that can’t be good...”
Adrienne’s eyes widened in worry as she flicked her head around and jumped to try to see what Soo was referring to. As soon as the large gentlemen in front of her shifted to his right, Adrienne’s emerald orbs flickered with anger…and was that a hint of jealousy?
Her fiery gaze came to rest upon a rather displeasing scene. It seemed that –and she would place all her money that Ha-Jung was behind this- Jin somehow ended up at the party. Jin had practically plastered herself to Yoochun’s side. Soo shot Jaejoong an uneasy glance before wrapping Adrienne’s arm around her own, “I say we put her in her place…don’t you?” Adrienne made no motions to reject Soo’s insistant pulls as she tugged her towards the offending scene.
It was almost like a car wreck unfolding in front of her eyes in slow motion. Adrienne had the faintest realization that she was moving but she couldn’t seem to register anything else. Her brain had become foggy with a swirl of emotion that she had no clue how to handle. She wasn’t sure if she was angry, sad, jealous or all of the above. She couldn’t tell if Yoochun was enjoying Jin by his side; though, she remembered his reaction to her the day they met, so she thought no. But that didn’t keep her from feeling slightly betrayed. Why wasn’t he shoving her aside and looking for her? She was the one that he wanted to be with right? Shouldn’t’ he have rushed to her side and gathered her to him? Apparently not. She grimaced as her stomached turned slightly.
Evidently she had come to stop next to the group a good few minutes ago. She hadn’t realized it; she was far to busy attempting to shred Jin with her angry gaze. She felt something warm wrap around her side and after shaking herself back to reality, she glanced over to find Changmin looking down at her with an uneasy regard. She struggled to focus her gaze, which eventually focused on Yoochun. She couldn’t read him. She could read everyone, but not him. His eyes seemed to be as clouded and indistinct as her own. Though even with the chaos stirring behind his piercing gaze, he seemed disturbingly composed.
How did this happen? Adrienne never lost her cool. Even during all the drama that had happened in the past, she never was any less than perfectly calm. But now….and him. Something had changed. Something was different.
“Great party Min! The food is great by the way…,” a nervous laugh escaped Changmin’s lips. Adrienne nodded slightly. When did Changmin put his arm around her waist? And when did Yoochun begin to look so agitated? “Thanks Changmin,” Adrienne smiled leaning into him-because it felt comfortable or her knees were about to give way…she wasn’t sure. “Though, I can’t take credit for it. It’s my grandmother’s party and I had nothing to do with the food. I couldn’t get near the kitchen without a disgruntled caterer waving rather sharp knives at me, “she chuckled to herself as she gingerly plucked a champagne flute from the waiter who was passing by. Her emerald scrutiny never left Yoochun as she lifted the flute to her lips and sipped at the blushed liquid.
He made no movements towards her or away from Jin. His body never stirred. He was too preoccupied with the thoughts whirling through his mind. What was she playing at? She had obviously come over here angry, but now she seemed composed…in Changmin’s arms. Yoochun felt his stomach roil slightly. He had been looking for Adrienne when Jin had suctioned herself to his arm. He had tried to politely shake her from his person, but it was all in vain. He was seconds away to shoving her aside when he saw Adrienne being escorted to him by Soo. Relief had momentarily slid over him as he imagined Adrienne extraditing him from Jin, but that never had happened. She seemed to be riled…at least her eyes had been quite fierce, but…nothing. No running into his arms or angry words to Jin for being attached to her man. There was nothing…except Changmin’s arm around Adrienne and her not escaping his hold. He knew that Changmin had taken her for a walk a few days ago…but nothing had happened right?
Right?
her man He thought back to his previous musings. Since when was he her man? The fact was he wasn’t. Not yet at least. He had hoped to have changed that tonight, though by the way she was glaring at him now, it didn’t seem like it was the shoe in that he had originally believed.
He watched her gaze flicker from warm to icy as her stare shifted from Changmin to himself. Since when did she regard him so coldly? Her eyes never left his as she sipped her blushing champagne. He couldn’t read her emotions. It was like there was nothing there. There had to be something there. Anything at all. Even if it was anger he didn’t care, as long as it was something.
He had become so immersed in his own thoughts that he didn’t hear that Adrienne had accepted a dance with Changmin. Nor did he see them leave his presence. He was still staring at the vacant space that Adrienne had once occupied when Yunho had smacked him on the back of the head.
“What in the HELL is wrong with you?” Yunho growled slightly, yanking Yoochun away from the rest of the group. Jin tried to follow, but Yunho’s pointed glare was enough to make her turn tail and leave. “Are you trying to blow it with Min or something?”
Yoochun grunted angrily and wrenched himself from Yunho’s grip, “Excuse me, but she wasn’t exactly throwing herself at me, was she?” He snapped, then snatched a flute of champagne from the side bar and tossed it back in one swig. Yunho scoffed as he shook his head, “Put yourself in her shoes. She saw you with Jin practically wrapped around you, what do you think she thought?”
“You know that I tried to get her off of me!!” His mouth gapped disbelievingly at his friend. Did Yunho actually think that he enjoyed having Jin all over him?
“Yeah but Min didn’t see that. Did she?”
Yoochun shifted uneasily then stiffened once again, “Well, it doesn’t matter. She has Changmin. Problem solved.” He’s stomach once again roiled at his rising jealousy.
“Oh please…Changmin was just trying to offer her some support in a very awkward situation. I would have done the same thing if I had been standing next to her. You could catch them, they were heading out on the garden…”
Yunho didn’t get a chance to finish his sentence before Yoochun had taken off after Adrienne.
