They didn't speak on the way up the stairs. It was some silent agreement between the two of them, and they both knew what they were leading themselves into. It was in motion now, and no matter how much she had told herself not to get so involved again so quickly, she couldn't help the way his mouth moved, the way his hand grasped hers, so desperately. She almost thought that he was a scared as she was. But she would just have to show him that she wasn't afraid. There was nothing to be afraid of now.
There was a slight pause in the stairwell before she found her keys. The silence was almost tangible in the air, a thick penetrable fog that surrounded the two of them like a blanket as they entered the apartment.
She pushed the door open and walked through, allowing him to follow before she closed and locked the door. As she turned around, she found herself facing him, staring into his beautiful green eyes. The dark clothes he was wearing, the look on his face...she remembered the first time she'd seen him outside the cemetary. He looked almost the same as he appeared now; pale, clothed in black, a haunted look in his eyes that cut through her soul. That was at her parent's funeral.
She found herself suddenly remembering the night her parents had died, the way she had stumbled in, so distraught, so alone, so lost. She had no one she could count on. She was all alone.
But when she saw him standing before her in the dim light from the kitchen, his dark hair falling around his pale skin, shrouding his face like some sort of dark angel, she didn't feel so alone. In fact, she felt safer than ever before. But she couldn't help the tears that were forming behind her eyes.
She looked away, leaning down to slip off her shoes, and take off her jacket, her red hair falling in her face, masking the sorrow she felt. It had been a while since she'd allowed herself the indulgence of this self-pity, the hurt and pain that their deaths had caused her. But it had almost been too long.
She looked back up at him, and it was like she had never looked away. With one look into those eyes, he took away any attempt that she had made to hide what she was feeling.
"Versailles..." He trailed off, his hand moving toward her chin, pulling her face up level with his. "What is wrong?"
"I-i-it's just-- I remembered my parents....." The tears started falling. "...and then I saw you standing there, and I just-- I just feel so..."
Their eyes locked and he moved forward, pulling her arms to encircle his waist. Without a word, his arms moved around her, drawing her closer to him, enveloping her with his warmth. Her words turned into muffled sobs, as she felt his body surround hers, comforting her. She snuggled tearfully into his jacket, marvelling at the scent and warmth of him, how it seemed that he always knew how to make her feel better, without even really doing anything.
With what seemed like a minimal effort on his part, she found herself being carried across the floor to her bedroom. She clung to his jacket, not wanting to be released from his embrace, needing him to be as near as possible to her. He really didn't mind, but in the back of his head, alarm bells were going off. Being in such close proximity to her small, fragile body sent the most delicious, and aching thoughts through his head. He couldn't help but remember the last time they had been in such close contact, the way her skin smelled, the way her hair draped around her...
"Gerard?" She whimpered as he laid her down onto the bed gently, her hair splaying out across the pillows, and sat on the edge, not quite touching her. She knew that he was going to leave her, because he thought that he was the reason she was crying. But that wasn't it, and if he left it would make things worse. She needed him to be there.
"Pl-- please don't--" She stammered between tears. "I don't want to be alone tonight..." She said it so quietly, like a child begging to sleep in her parent's bed for the night, her eyes wide and fearful that he wasn't going to agree.
He moved closer to her, brushing a silky strand of dark auburn hair away from her pale, tear-streaked face. How could he leave her now? She had never been more vulnerable, more insecure, more beautiful.
"Shh..." He mummured, pressing a finger to her lips as he curled up beside her on the bed. "I won't leave you."
She let his arms enfold her again, and she snuggled into his body, soaking up his strength, his warmth. He pulled her close to him, holding her as tight as he dared without fear of breaking her.
"Promise?" She said, her glassy eyes meeting his again.
"Promise." He nodded, sealing his covenant with a gentle kiss on her lips.
She inhaled deeply as their lips joined, taking in the feeling of his soft mouth caressing hers. His hand made small delicate circles on her back, and she could feel his body move to pull away from her, breaking off their intimate contact.
No, Gerard....
He sucessfully seperated their bodies, and ran a hand through her hair, his other hand still tracing lines on the small of her back. She looked up at him needily, biting her lip as though she was nervous. And she was. She knew she shouldn't ask this of him, especially after the last time-- but there was just something about him that made her not care, something that made her feel more sure and more safe than she'd ever felt in her life. Or at least since her parents had died.
She wanted to feel like that forever. She always wanted Gerard's arms around her, to feel his body next to hers, to keep her comforted and assured that everything was right in the world, the way it should be. And as sick and as wrong as she thought it must seem, because she really didn't know him as well as she wanted to, and the last time hadn't been the most happy experience she'd ever had...she needed him.
She looked into his beautiful eyes, and saw the hesitation in them. She knew he was afraid of himself from the last time. She would just have to make him realize that there was nothing to be afraid of.
Her hand moved up between their bodies and caressed his cheek, resting against it.
"Gerard, don't stop kissing me, please." He could hear the pleading in her tone, sensed how much she meant the words she was saying. It was making it very difficult for him to keep his promise. He knew that he should run away, get as far away from her as he could, so that he never had to worry about hurting her again. He stood his ground, silently sitting up and putting even more distance between them. But those eyes...
He could see it then, when the tears formed once again. She thought he was rejecting her. But, God, if she only knew the havoc that the combination of her vulnerability, soft voice, scent, and electric touch was wreaking in his pants...If she didn't stop...
"Please? Gerard, I--I--" A tear fell down her cheek, and he knew that it was just no use. He knew that he was no match for her, and that once this started, there was no stopping it. Not this time. "I need you."
He looked down at the floor, at the curtains, at the nightstand, anything to avoid her stare. He swallowed some non-existant saliva to quench his tight, dry throat, but his voice still sounded squeaky when it came out. "But I thought-- I mean, I don't know if we should-- I mean, what if I might--"
She cut him off, interrupting his protests. "No, Gerard. I don't care about that. I--" She pulled his chin up with her finger, forcing him to look into her eyes. "Gerard, I need you, tonight-- here--now." You would have thought that she was saying some deep dark secret, the way she whispered in his ear, her lips grazing his earlobe. "Please? Save me?"
He shuddered against her body, her words hitting his very core, bringing the desire fully awake in him. But this wasn't the pure unbridled passion that they had shared before. This was something deeper than just lust. Something pure, and vulnerable, and beautiful, all at the same time. There was still the incredible sensations her small hands and body were creating all over his. But that wasn't what turned him on the most. It was the fact that she was willing to do this when she was the most vulnerable to him, that she trusted him enough to not do what he did last time, to protect her, and save her.
A low moan escaped his throat, and he caught her lips with his own. The time for fighting it was over. Now it was time to give in.
