Gerry received the news that he had the part in a new film. He would have to move to the UK for a few months to film, but he was pleased about that. He wanted to see his family and spend some time out of the damn sun. Gerry never thought he would miss English weather. The only thing he had to do was convince Jade to accompany him.
The last two weeks had been his idea of heaven. He and Jade had spent every second they could together. Best friends by day, and passionate lovers by night. Gerard had never met a girl like Jade, nor had he cared about any other girl the way he cared for Jade. She made him laugh. She made him feel safe. Most of all she made him feel normal, just like any other guy who had a girlfriend. Around her, he could just be Gerry. Jade didn’t expect anything from him except love. Having her own money and her own public persona, she didn’t rely on him for anything. This made him feel secure in the knowledge that all she wanted was who he was, not the baggage he brought along.
Gerard glanced around the darkened restaurant. This happened to be their favourite low key restaurant, it was never that busy. No reporters haunted their steps; no friends appeared forcing them to make polite small talk. In this small place, they could just be what they wanted. Together. Gerard inhaled his cigarette and glanced at the clock. Jade was ten minutes late, but he wasn’t bothered. That girl would be late for her own funeral. He was enjoying these few minutes along to collect his thoughts. He hoped what he had to say tonight would be well received. Inside, he longed for this game to be over. He wanted to hold Jade in public, to kiss her in public, he wanted to move in with her and spend his days waking up by her side. If Jade came to England with him against her father’s wishes, it would be a big step in taking control of her own life. Only then could they take control of their future and their relationship.
A cold draft of air reached his corner, looking over to the door her saw Jade had entered. As Gerry looked he felt his stomach flip. Once again he was reminded how special Jade was. They had been a secret item for months now, but the sight of her still made him nervous.
Gerry stood up as she approached, frowning at the cigarette in his hand. Gerard pulled tongues at her, and held out her chair. Leaning in to kiss her cheek he seated himself opposite her. Jade looked around nervously. To her eyes there were no family acquaintances, no friends, no reporter looking types. Rising to her feet, she walked around the table and kissed Gerard hard on the lips, pulling him into a hug at the same time. “I missed you last night, darling,” she whispered, “Where were you?”
Gerard smiled and pulled away from her, “Jade don’t, you know what will happen if we are seen”. Jade blinked at the bitter tone in his voice.
“I am sorry, my Jade,” he whispered, kissing her head. “I don’t mean to snap, I have had a lot to think about. I don’t mean to take it out on you, but we do need to talk.”
Jade resumed her seat and smiled, “We do. What did you get up to last night then?”
“I went for dinner at Michelle’s, which was interesting. I have new offers in you see, but the more drunk she got, the more I learned about her. I think she is unhappy at the moment and I am not sure why.”
Jade smiled and looked at the floor, “She is increasingly unhappy because you are happy Gerry. Have you not noticed that?”
“I beg your pardon. Why on earth would she get pleasure on me being unhappy?”
“You’re so naïve. Not you being unhappy as such, but drifting from one woman to the next, she kept introducing you to easy shags, and you like a male pimp had your way with them, am I right?”
Gerard’s eyes burnt with anger, “Somehow my confidence in you isn’t feeling too good right now, Jade, and you better have something good to back this up with.”
“Was she or was she not, one of your great shags?”
Gerard’s head was spinning; he had never mentioned the relationship he and Michelle had had to anyone. “Well. I mean. Not in. Why?”
Jade fell silent as the waiter walked over to collect their orders. Gerard asked him to come back, as they hadn’t even looked at the menu’s but ordered a water for him and a red wine for Jade. Jade’s grin hadn’t left him. As the waiter walked off, he turned back to her, waiting for her explanation.
Finally Jade dropped her menu, and spoke. “You spilt with her didn’t you, after one night? You wooed her and then you broke her. Since then, she has put you up with plenty of women she knew either wouldn’t become attached to you or you would loathe by morning. By doing so, she could ensure you were as miserable as her. I don’t think she meant to hurt you though. She loves you. She didn’t think we would fall for each other.”
Gerard sat, thinking all this over, his mouth wide open, and the cigarette burning down in his fingers. Only when the heat burnt him did he flick his hand and drop it. Jade had just guessed everything Michelle had blurted out last night; leaving Gerard in a very awkward situation, sitting between her and her husband.
“You worked all this out from observing us or something?”
“No, she called me last night and left a message on my answer machine. Why didn’t you just tell me you slept with her? Then I wouldn’t have drunken messages that begin with threats, saying she will claim you back then end in her saying sorry and she wishes us well!”
Gerard fiddled with his knife and fork, “I’m not proud of it,. She called me this morning and quit, you know. She isn’t my agent anymore. I belong to someone else now. It’s probably for the best. She said she is going to try and make her marriage work. I think we will stay friends”
Jade smiled and stroked his leg with her foot. “Is that what you wanted to talk about then? I hope not or I have just stolen your thunder.”
“No.” Gerard went silent as the waiter returned a second time to collect their order. Gerard apologised again and asked him to return in a few minutes.
“My new manager, he has already got me an audition, which I nailed. I have to move to England for a few months, to film. I want you to come with me, Jade.”. Gerard felt Jade’s foot drop away from his leg. Her face was expressionless. He reached across the table and placed his hand over hers. “I need you with me, Jade. It’s only for a few months and then we can return if you wish.”
Jade pulled her hand back, “Oh yes and what do I tell my father, or Jake? Do you think my life is that simple that I can just up and leave? Gerard, I can’t just pack a bag and run. You can’t keep trying to save me. I have to fix this myself.”
Gerard found anger creeping up on him, “Oh yes, well, you’re doing a great job of that so far, aren’t you?” Seeing the hurt on her face, he carried on. “Oh did that hurt? Well it hurts me that we can’t be together in public; it hurts that we can’t sort this out; it hurts me that you wont take a stand against a fucking psychopath so we can be together.” Gerard watched tears welling up in Jade’s eyes, but it only spurred him on.
“Jade, when can we be happy?”
“Are you not happy, Gerard?”
“Don’t you dare make me feel shit, Jade. It’s killing me enough to see you in tears, but I figure this has to get through to you. Has it? When can we be like everyone else, Jade? I love you so damn much; I want to be with you forever.”
Jade rose to her feet, but Gerard was around the table in seconds pulling her to him, and holding her tightly to his chest.
“I want to belong to you, I want you to belong to me and I want to marry you and love for you forever, Jade. Can you imagine how I feel knowing the only thing stopping me from doing all this is your inability to stand up for yourself? What can he do to you that he hasn’t already done?”
Ten minutes later, the waiter returned to the table to find the man alone. His head was in his hands, his body slumped across the table, his pain there for all to see. The waiter decided to leave him be.
