Chapter 12
Tamsin grinned madly after she had read Gerry’s note for the third time. Even hours later she was incapable to wipe that insistent smile off her face and being a typical female, she just had to share the good news with someone. Most of all she wanted to call Gerry straightaway, but refrained from doing so.
After she had called Julie, she started to email to and fro with Laura, who after a while suggested that it would be simpler to meet after work. Her boss David continuously gave her deeply mistrustful looks, when she still smiled even after he had given her three additional assignments. But nothing was able to diminish her high spirits.
Laura and Tamsin met after work and popped into Sainsbury’s to get some stuff for dinner. Once they had arrived at Tamsin’s flat they started to cook Paella and danced around in the kitchen to David Bowie. They also sang so loud and terrible that the next door neighbour, a geeky guy with huge glasses that made him resemble an owl, knocked on the door and asked with a worried face if everything was alright.
They giggled and invited him in for dinner but he blushed, stuttered an excuse and made a quick withdrawal. “I think we should anyway bring him some food” Laura giggled. When they knocked on his door and handed over the food he stuttered “thank you…you shouldn’t have…” and coloured in a deep shade of crimson once again. They laughed a lot about silly things over dinner and Tamsin felt as if she were a teenager again.
Later, when they had said their goodbyes, Tamsin crawled under her blanket and felt excitement pool in her stomach at the thought of meeting Gerry the following evening. She bolted upright when she realised that - as keen as she had been to phone him straight away after receiving the vase - she had not yet called him.
She pondered for a while whether it was too late to call him now and concluded that quarter past eleven indeed was too late. Maybe it was anyway good to leave him waiting for a bit longer and with that thought she turned off the light.
Eyes wide open in the dark she kept staring at her alarm clock, which displayed the time in blood red, glowing numbers. 11:33pm not really that late, or was it?
**
Gerry was feeling queasy. He had been incredibly busy all day and during his short lunch break he had raced down to Habitat. After a lengthy discussion with the salesgirl, he had finally picked a vase. Then he had raced back, scribbled and discarded several versions of his note, before he had settled for one he could live with. Finally he had shoved the vase with the note into the hands of his assistant to get it delivered to Tamsin. Once he had done so, several people had been waiting for him, dragged him away and without any proper food in his stomach he had worked until late, running on coffee and snacks .
Now he sat in his living room and flipped through a magazine without paying any attention to its pages. For the first time of the day Gerry finally had some time for himself without anyone hovering around him, making demands.
But now he was all by himself he felt tired and grumpy. The grumpiness was foremost Tamsin’s fault, since she had not yet called him. A glance at his watch showed him that it was already half eleven.
Annoyed he realised that he had expected her to ring in the afternoon, basically as soon as she had received his vase and note. Maybe the assistant or the courier had screwed it up? And then there was also the most annoying possibility that she did not want to see him again. Was that really a valid possibility?
Before Gerry was able to follow through on that train of thought, his mobile rang and he picked it up immediately. When he heard Tamsin’s voice, his stomach made a little, excited leap.
Tiredness and annoyance forgotten he laughed off her apologies for calling so late but then grumbled “I just started to think you’d refuse my offer. I would have been very frustrated after the great lengths I went to replace that wretched vase of yours” and added questioningly “do you like the new one?”
She laughed heartily “yeah I love it, it’s beautiful. Thank you Gerry.”
He grinned and felt strangely satisfied “great, now the vase is out of the way” there he hesitated slightly “what about tomorrow? I’ll be busy till about eight but then I am all yours”. He quickly added after another short pause “if you want to meet me that is...I mean to go for dinner…or a drink…or both”.
Damn, there was that uncharacteristic incapability to articulate properly again.
Tamsin grinned to herself and said as coolly as possible “sure, why not. Where do you want to meet?” but inside her intestines seemed to dance the happy polka.
”I’ll collect you at your place, alright?” Gerry answered immediately.
“Yeah, great” she replied and felt that mad grin return to her face.
”Hey, what are you doing that late anyway?” Gerry inquired not wanting to end the call that quickly.
Tamsin blushed “I’m in bed” and completely unrelated added “a friend was over for dinner earlier on.”
When Gerry heard the word ‘friend’ he felt a jolt of…something…
Unable to hold back the question, trying to sound as uninterested as possible “so what did you cook for your…friend.”
She had to bite her tongue to not start snorting with laughter. Hardly ever had she heard such a badly disguised attempt to find out whether her visitor had been male or female.
She decided it would be fun to leave him hanging in there for a little while longer “Well, we actually had a lot of fun cooking paella together and spontaneously invited my neighbour over”
“Hm” Gerry sounded annoyed and she laughed and added to put him out of his misery “you know, Laura is quite a good cook and my poor geeky neighbour has probably not had anything other than microwavable chips for a year.”
Gerry felt strangely upbeat again, but added in a sulky voice “but that still leaves the fact that I have not been invited although your geeky neighbour was.”
She giggled “well Laura and I were singing so horrifying that the poor guy knocked on my door to ask whether everything was alright. I guess he thought we’d torture a cat or accidentally grilled our own fingers.’”
This information made Gerry feel reconciled and he laughed out loud “well, maybe I was lucky not to be there after all.”
Not having forgotten about Tamsin being in bed he queried cheekily “So do tell me, are you feeling lonely in that big bed of yours…all alone?”
“Well, I guess I could ask my neighbour to come over if I feel all too lonely…he looks quite cuddly”
”THAT was not exactly what I wanted to hear. You are being very uncooperative!” Gerry protested “…and have I mentioned lately that you are killing me?”
She chuckled wickedly “you have not mentioned it in about two days.”
Although Gerry would have liked to ask what she was wearing and other much naughtier things, he had the wits not to. “OK girl, before you cut me off again for some dodgy reason, I hope you’ll sleep well. See you tomorrow eight o’clock. Night”
Still grinning Tamsin replied “Good night Gerry. See ya tomorrow and you sleep well too.”
They put down their phones and soon after both were asleep with faint grins lingering on their faces.
