August 21st 2004. Barkham Manor, Buckinghamshire.
The filming of ‘Professional Lies’ had begun just over a month ago, and so far all was going well. Although they worked very long and unconventional hours on the set and where often very tired, they where having a wonderful time filming. Kim was enjoying her role as Frankie immensely and loved the fact her role required her to put on a very posh British accent, to which she sometimes still used when the cameras had stopped rolling, mainly to humour her co stars. God knows they needed something to take their minds of the sometimes monotonous life on a film set. It was on one of these fairly monotonous days when Kim was sat waiting off set in the rain for her call that she had a welcome surprise to the boredom of waiting around in the warm summer drizzle.
‘Hey Papa’ Kim said tiredly but happily into her phone when she answered the call from her beloved stepfather Jeff. Kim had never ever called Jeff dad, always ‘Papa’ or ‘Papa Jeff’. Kim’s dad had died from liver failure when she was just a small child and Gus only a baby in arms. Ethan Appleton had loved his wife and children dearly, but sadly had loved alcohol more. Even though Kim didn’t hate her real father, she resented him for his alcoholism that had robbed two children of a father, and a woman of her husband. Jeff was the only father Kim and Gus had ever really known; Kim didn’t have many memories of her real dad.
‘Hello my love! How’s my special girl today’ said Jeff warmly as he heard his ‘eldest daughter’. Although Jeff wasn’t her real dad he felt as if he was, he had been the one who had brought her up from the age of six.
‘I’m fine thanks, very tired!’ said Kim as she wrestled with the temperamental handle on the door of her trailer.
‘I’m not ringing at a bad time am I honey?’ asked Jeff.
‘No Papa its fine, I’m just waiting for one of my scenes. We started filming at 3am this morning; they needed to do early morning shots. That’s the trouble with playing a crook; they tend to steal things under the cover of darkness’ laughed Kim gently as she sat down with a can of Pepsi and put her feet up.
‘Well yes this is true, but I bet what they are paying you makes up for the lack of sleep slightly doesn’t it superstar?’ chuckled Jeff.
‘Among other things’ said Kim with a smile.
‘Ahhhh yes, I take it you are referring to the new boyfriend’ said Jeff, ‘I trust things are all fine and well there? He asked.
‘Great thanks, everything is going fine, I’m really happy with him’ said Kim brightly. It was just on a month and a half into their relationship, and Kim and Gerry where very, very happy together.
‘I’m pleased for you love, really I am’ said Jeff happily, glad that Kim had found someone who treated her as she deserved to be treated. ‘Listen me and Mommy have got something to tell you, a little surprise for you really’ said Jeff.
‘Oh really?’ said Kim, ‘am I going to be a big sister again?
‘Oh no, no more kids for us, I think we have our hands full with the four of you! Laughed Jeff.
‘Well come on then, spill! What’s this surprise? Asked Kim excitedly.
‘The surprise is that the family is taking a little trip abroad in a few weeks time, and ill give you three guesses to where we are heading on our holiday’ said Jeff.
‘It couldn’t be Ravenna could it by any chance?’ said Kim, feeling herself begin to beam.
‘Correct! I booked it just after you told Mommy when you would be out there, we where just going to show up and surprise you at your hotel one day but I couldn’t wait any longer, I had to tell you! Said Jeff happily as he held the phone away from his ear, if he hadn’t have he would have been deafened by his stepdaughters happy little squeals.
Even the terrible rain that poured down into Buckinghamshire couldn’t have dampened Kim’s spirits that day. She couldn’t wait to see her family again and introduce them all to Gerry. Gus had apparently given him a rave review to the rest of the family after they had met at the Massive Attack gig and now they couldn’t wait to meet Kim’s new boyfriend.
‘That’s a fantastic piece of news sweetheart, I have to say I’ve been looking forward to seeing Gus again, not to mention meeting everyone else, it’s weird because I feel like I know them all already with how much you chatter on about them all’ said Gerry later that evening when they had a three hour break from filming.
‘Isn’t it just? I really can’t wait to see them!’ said Kim as she secured her hair into a clip, letting a few strands fall free and blow around the back of her neck in the light evening breeze as she sat out on the balcony of her and Gerry’s room. Gerry had told the relevant people that he didn’t need his own room while at the Manor, and because by now everyone knew Kim and Gerry where together there was no great surprise at this revelation.
Pictures and stories about them had been in all the celebrity gossip magazines and papers, and both their agents had been inundated with calls from said magazines trying to get interviews with the couple, but to no avail. While Kim and Gerry didn’t for one second see why they should hide their relationship away, they also didn’t see why they should have to talk about it to the media. They both considered their private life to be just that; Private.
The weeks leading up to their departure to Italy couldn’t have gone quicker for anyone concerned with the film. Cast and crew alike where all immensely looking forward to the change of location to Italy’s sunny shores and warmer summer climate; Italian summers where far less cursed with rain than British ones. They would be on location in the beautiful northern cost city of Ravenna, then moving on to Tuscany and The Vatican for the last few days of filming.
Finally the week of their departure arrived, and all concerned flew out to Italy. On the second week into their filming Gerry found himself having to deal with a very excited Kim. It was the week that her family would arrive and very conveniently the filming had stopped for a day of rest on the day that the Appleton/Robinson clan touched down at the airport, so Kim decided to hire a car and go and fetch them herself with Gerry.
‘I just hope Sally has had a good flight, she gets really frightened of things like that’ said Kim as she turned the Chrysler people carrier she had hired into the airport car park.
‘I suppose the Down syndrome makes her freak out a little more at things like this doesn’t it? Said Gerry.
‘Yeah well basically because of that its just a little harder for her to understand since she her mental age doesn’t develop like a normal child’s does, but even so she’s such a bright kid, her teachers have all said that she performs exceptionally well considering her disability. I think it’s because she’s got a very curious nature and she’s so social that helps her even more, she will never have trouble making friends’ said Kim, feeling her heart leap into her chest at the thought of seeing Sally. Kim parked the car and got out into the blistering midday heat to walk the short distance from the car park to the entrance to the airport, arm in arm with Gerry.
The couple sat and chatted, ignoring the Italian paparazzi who where stood about twenty feet away from them, snapping like mad with their cameras as they waited for Kim’s family to come through the gate. They didn’t have to wait long. Kim could hear her mothers’ broad Essex accent, keeping everybody in check before she could even see her. She got up and stood out in an open space so her family could see her, the first of them to spot her was little Sally, who came hurtling out of the crowd at a run.
‘Kim, Kim, Kim! Sally yelled with delight as she ran toward her big sister, arms outstretched.
‘Come here tiny girl’ Kim said as she hurried forward and caught Sally in her arms in a huge hug and swung her round, feeling tears of joy prickle her eyes as Sally shouted ‘I missed you loads and loads’.
‘Hello my baby!’ her mother said as she pulled her daughter into a hug, overjoyed to see her.
‘Oi tart, where’s my hug? Said her sister Charlie, who as usual stuck out like a sore thumb in her Goth attire. Kim put Sally down and threw her arms around Charlie, careful not to impale herself on the big spiky collar she was wearing.
‘I’ve missed you so much, it’s not the same when you aren’t around’ Whispered Charlie as she hugged her sister tightly. As she hugged Charlie she wondered where Gus was, and then she heard him.
‘Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezer!’ Shouted Gus, stretching out the E’s in the word ‘geezer’ as he charged over to Gerry and shook hands with him, before pulling him into a manly hug. Kim felt a little sad that Gus had not rushed to see her first, but was touched at the fact he was so pleased to see Gerry.
‘Papa’ said Kim quietly with an elated smile when she had let go of Charlie and saw Jeff waiting patiently to get his chance to hug her.
‘Come here princess’ he said as he held his arms out wide to embrace Kim. Once she had hugged each member of her family she introduced them all to Gerry.
‘Everyone, this is Gerry, Gerry, meet my crazy family! Said Kim as they all laughed.
‘Hi Gerry, I’m Pauline, but you can call me Lulu; everyone else does’ said Kim’s mother as she gave Gerry a hug.
‘And I can see why they do, uncanny! Said Gerry, noticing the more than passing likeness between Kim’s mother and the famous 1960's/70’s singer.
When the introductions where aside, they waited for Kim’s family to collect their baggage and departed the airport. As Kim had predicted, Sally didn’t leave Gerry alone for a second. Children that suffered with Down syndrome where renowned for being very affectionate and very social and Sally was no exception. She trotted along happily in between Gerry and Kim, holding a hand each as chatted away to Gerry, not letting him get a word in edgeways. Gerry had to listen very carefully to what the tot was telling him as Sally had a slight speech impediment and also talked very quickly, but he could just about understand that she was telling him about the plane and how scary it was, but how she had been fine once she had ‘gone to sleepies’ as she had cutely referred to her nap as.
‘Oh no, you’re not driving us are you, oh heavens we are all doomed! Joked Jeff as he loaded the last of the cases onto the roof rack of the Chrysler with Gerry assisting him as Kim took her seat behind the wheel.
‘Ha! Remember that time we went to Tunisia and you got us lost four times in one day! At least I’ve got a sense of direction’ said Kim as she removed her sunglasses from her head and put them back over her eyes. Jeff and Gerry looked at each other then both burst out laughing at her statement, knowing Kim was about as good with directions as a broken GPS. The family got themselves settled and off they drove, with Jeff winding his stepdaughter up every second of the way.
‘You should have turned right back there’ he laughed for the umpteenth time on their journey to the hotel, which was only a ten minute walk from the hotel Gerry and Kim where staying at.
‘I’m warning you Papa’ said Kim as she quickly turned and cast Jeff a dark look before laughing.
‘Whoa! Look at that sea!’ said Gus excitedly as he saw many a surfer riding the waves in the beautiful crystal blue ocean. ‘How about us going for a paddle in that later?’ he said to Sally who had undone her seatbelt and was now climbing up onto Gus’ lap to have a look at the view.
‘Yeah Gus take me! Gus take me! Kim and Gerry come too!’ said Sally as her face lit up.
‘Kim and Gerry might not have time little one’ said Gus as he placed Sally back into her seat and re clipped her seatbelt. Sally pulled a face and then lent forward and tapped Gerry on the shoulder.
‘Gerry swim too’ she said, her big brown eyes full of hope.
‘Ok then, I can’t say no to a face as cute as that’ said Gerry as he reached back and tickled Sally under the chin. ‘We don’t have to be back on set until tomorrow so we will be able to spend the day with you all at least’ said Gerry to Kim’s family as Kim turned the car into the hotel’s car park.
Once they had checked into the hotel and got their rooms organised, Jeff said he wanted to take Gerry for a drink and departed to the bar, taking Gus along too. Charlie was unpacking her things and keeping Sally entertained, which just left Kim and her mother alone to talk.
‘Well you got one thing right, he’s bloody gorgeous isn’t he?’ said her mother in reference to Gerry as she unpacked her suitcase.
‘Isn’t he just! But I got everything else right too’ said Kim as she passed her mother a pile of neatly folded tops.
‘Well I have to find that out for myself don’t I? But he seems like a nice lad’ said Pauline as she stacked the pile of tops Kim had handed her on the shelf in the wardrobe.
‘At nearly 34 years old he isn’t really a lad is he? Said Kim as she passed over a pile of skirts.
‘Well I’m an old fart so he is to me’ chucked Pauline.
‘I just hope I look as good as you do when I’m fifty! Exclaimed Kim as she looked at her beautiful mother.
‘I owe most of it to giving up those nasty things’ said Pauline as Kim pulled her packet of cigarettes from her pocket.
‘Oh mother stop being a nag’ said Kim as she rolled her eyes and lit a cigarette, letting herself out onto the balcony. ‘I’ve promised myself ill give up when I have kids’ she shouted back over her shoulder.
‘Well hurry up and make me a grandmother then! Laughed Pauline as she joined her daughter on the balcony.
‘Steady on Mum! We’ve only been together for two and a half months!’ Said Kim as she turned her head to her Mum.
‘I know, but he’s the one for you, I just know it’ said Pauline, her eyes sparkling in the exact same way Kim’s did.
‘I hope he is Mum, he’s such an amazing guy. It’s like he’s my boyfriend and my best friend all rolled into one’ said Kim.
‘Well if you think about it that’s exactly what he is. You really like him don’t you’ said Pauline as she gave Kim a little playful shove in the shoulder with her own.
‘Yeah, yeah I do Mommy’ said Kim as she took another drag of her cigarette and rested her head against her Mum’s shoulder. Pauline put her arm around her first born and sighed happily. After all the trouble Kim had got from men in the past she was glad she had finally found someone who made her so happy, and she could see the change in Kim from the minute she had clapped eyes on her at the airport. Her daughter was glowing with happiness and she was greatly looking forward to spending some time with the man who was the cause of it.
