An hour later, Frank shuffled out of his bunk and disappeared into the bathroom. Gerard and I were sitting at the table playing cards and the rest of the guys were playing Guitar Hero. Again. For the millionth time. I glanced over at them and rolled my eyes. They were just way too into it.
"Go fish," Gerard said, holding his cards up to his mouth and looking at me down his nose. He looked like a little kid.
"This isn't Go Fish, it's Gin Rummy." I couldn't help but giggle at him as he looked at me with confusion, only to snicker and play his cards like he was supposed to. Frank emerged from the bathroom and shuffled to the fridge. He bent down and looked inside, his sleepy face illuminated by the dim light. He took a bottle of water out and closed the door.
"Where are we?" He asked no one, sitting down and sipping his water.
"Heading to Houston," I said, not looking up from my card game with Gerard.
"You look like shit Frank," Ray said suddenly, as he realized Frank was awake and in the same room. "Are you okay?" Frank rubbed his hands over his head and scrubbed his face with them. He looked at the game on the TV and acted like he was going to ignore Ray's comment and question.
"Not really man," Frank finally said, giving me a quick glance out of the corner of his eye. I caught it because I had looked up when Ray spoke. Frank's answer had caught Gerard's attention too, and he had laid his cards down and turned around to look at him.
"What is it?" Ray asked, apparently concerned about him. Frank sighed and stood up, shaking his head and going back to his bunk. We all exchanged puzzled glances and went back to what we were doing. I noticed Gerard wasn't really paying much attention to the game after the Frank episode.
"What's wrong Gerard?" He looked at me from under his brow and shook his head.
"I don't know. I don't know why Frank's so pissed off all of a sudden. It's bothering me."
"Me too. He was really sweet to me the other day and now it seems like he suddenly hates my guts." Gerard leaned back in his chair and sighed. I tossed my cards on the table, bored with the game anyway. Gerard stretched his arms up and then laced his fingers behind his head. He closed his eyes for a moment and relaxed. I loved seeing him with his eyes shut. He was so angelic. He caught me watching him as he opened his eyes and trained them on me. He smiled so sweetly, and I returned it willingly.
"I'm sleepy. I think I'll take a nap. Are you tired?" I rested my chin in my hand and thought about it.
"Yeah, I am. I should take more naps." I snickered as Gerard motioned for me to follow him. We got up and went into the bedroom. I dropped onto the bed and sighed at how good it felt to lay down. Gerard crawled over beside me and lay on his stomach. He snored loudly, pretending to be asleep. I giggled and pushed at his arm playfully. His boyish smile broke across his mouth and he giggled and peeked at me through one open eye.
“Dork,” I said, moving up on the bed more and resting my head on a pillow. He followed me, laying his head on the pillow beside mine.
“Sorry. I’ll behave.” I turned to look at him, a smile still dancing on my lips.
“You better. This nap idea was yours to start with you know.” He hid his face in the pillow and laughed loudly. “What is wrong with you? I thought you were tired.”
“I am,” he said into the pillow. I could barely understand him.
“Then go to sleep.” I turned over and pulled the comforter up over my hips and settled in for a nice, long nap. A moment later, the covers were pulled off of me as Gerard covered up. I sighed and turned over. He was facing me; his eyes closed and his hands gripping the blanket under his chin.
“What are you doing?” He cracked open an eye and furrowed his brow.
“Hmmm?”
“Blanket hog,” was all I said before turning back over.
“Are you cold?” Gerard softly said.
“Yes,” I responded without turning over. I felt him move, and then he was next to me. He tossed part of the blanket over me and snaked his arm around my middle. I smiled as I closed my eyes. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he said in my ear. His breath was hot. I felt the tingles of a shiver run down my left side. He nuzzled his face into my hair as he shared my pillow. I could hear him take a deep breath as he smelled of my hair. Then he squeezed me into him gently and exhaled. I wrapped my brain around the moment and relaxed into him. The loud hum of the bus lulled me into a deep, much needed sleep.
