“No.” Roxy protested weakly, “Get away from me.”
“Roxy, you’re going to eat me anyway, and I can’t say I care much, but I want to kill that son of a bitch.” He moved closer to her, “It will work. You just have to get out of here.”
She shook her head. It was a crazy plan. But it had a hope of working. A slim hope, but a chance. And it offered a better option than starving to death.
“Roxy please? This is the only way I can make him suffer for killing my Bammie.” His voice hitched on the name.
Roxy looked deep into his eyes and saw that it was what he truly wanted, even if he was no longer exactly sane. She was responsible for Bam’s death, so how could she deny him this, “Alright. But you asked for it.” She summoned her strength and pulled him to her, sinking her fangs into his throat.
Hours later, Jean Claude came back. the first thing he saw was Roxy, up and about, pacing the box. He looked about and saw the corpse of Ville sprawled on the floor. With a huge smile, he lept on top of the box and unlocked the door, throwing it open, “Roxanne my dear! You finally obeyed me! Come join me!”
She hopped nimbly out of the box and down on the floor, carefully avoiding any of Bam’s entrails, “You have to let me give him-them-a proper burial. I won’t let them stay here to rot.”
He waved his hand, “If it pleases you.” He opened his arms, pleased when she went willingly into them, “Oh Roxanne, you had me worried for a bit.”
She sighed, “You knew I couldn’t let myself starve.”
“I know. Why did you put me through this?” he rubbed her back.
“I’m sorry Jean Claude. I don’t know why I bothered to fight. I would have just come back to you once they grew old and died.” She said through gritted teeth.
“So why bother? I love you Roxanne. Why can’t you just be obedient?”
She lifted her head, focusing on a point over his left shoulder, then looking back at him with a terrible smile, “Because you are a self centered prick and I couldn’t stand another day in your presence!”
Jean Claude didn’t have time to be taken aback as a long bladed dagger, one he’d used to carve pieces of Bam’s flesh, was plunged through his heart. He looked at it puzzled for a second, the point sticking out of his chest, dripping dark blood onto the concrete floor already covered with a congealing layer of the stuff, “Roxanne?”
“Not Roxy asshole.” Ville said form behind him.
Jean Claude turned and saw that his demise was at the hands of a thin etherial beauty who’s green eyes blazed with a supernatural light under the haze of rage. He opened his mouth to say his parting words, but Roxy grabbed the handel of the dagger and twisted it. The only nosie he made was a sticky plop as his body fell.
Ville and Roxy held each other as they wept for all that they’d lost. Roxy had gone back on her promise to herself not to ever make another vampire. It was the only way Ville could have the strenght to get out of the box and his apparently lifeless body was the only way Jean Claude would have opened the door.
“We can’t leave him here.” Ville said quietly, and there was no question of which “he” was meant.
Roxy nodded and they began to gather up Bam without saying a word.
They put him in a carboard box lined with plastic and flew him home, to Westchester where the box was replaced by a coffin, purple with heartagrams emblazoned on it. They told everyone he’d been attacked by wild boars in Germany. The funeral was small, only his closest friends and family wept over his remains, tossing white roses into the grave with him.
Ville placed a single red rose on his coffin and whispered, “I’m so sorry my love, but we’ll meet again. I have forever to look for you now.” He went to join Roxy, who stood a respectful distance away, listening to her iPod to give him genuine privacy.
She pulled the buds out of her ears, “Ready?”
He slipped her arm through his, “I think I would like to go on vacation. Somewhere with open skies and vast expanses of land without a wall in sight.”
The two of them walked out of the cemetary and into the night.
