They all sat around looking at each other.
Gary, on the couch in jeans and a plain white v-neck. He’d lost a lot of weight, Mark noticed. He looked and Mark was almost jealous of the whole Barlow vibe going on. His kids were adorable, Daniel a little angel and Emily the cutest girl he’d ever seen with a twinkle of naughty in her eyes. Much like her dad. Gary had proudly shown them the pictures of his kids and Mark had felt that need to one day have a child himself. Only lately had he really thought of that picture, he’d recently met a very nice lady. He and her had been taking things very slowly, but with Emma he could see the possibility of one day being a daddy himself.
Gary was checking out Robbie from the corner of his eye. Was he drunk? Or stoned? Gary had to admit Robbie looked either, just bloody nervous. He was very white and he’d wiped the sweat from his forehead a couple of times. He hadn’t spoken a lot yet, out of this meeting he of course felt very good that he was the least expected person to turn up. Gary would never admit it out loud, but he had been stinking jealous of Robbie’s success. Robbie had made some awesome music and Gary wouldn’t want to give up all the happiness he had today with his family for the fame of Robbie, but at one point he had been in bed asking nobody in particular: “Why him? Why not me?”. He’d never gotten the answer but he wasn’t asking anymore either.
Rob, still feeling a complete wreck and trying not to make eye contact with Gary, received a tiny wink from Mark. A wave of recognition washed over him, he had been such a jerk to have neglected Mark for so long. He had always been his best friend while he was in the band. And for very long Mark had tried to keep in touch with him, ask him how he was. He was genuinely nice. Mark was looking a lot older, still cute as ever, but little wrinkles near his eyes showed his age. He still had his broad smile, which he was throwing all over the place right now. Rob smiled, Markie was nervous too.
Howard sat next to Jason, as always, Jason had arrived fashionably late. And by the glow on his cheeks Howard could tell it wasn’t because he had fallen asleep and forgotten time because a) Jason never just “fell asleep”, and b) he had seen that awful grin on his face far too many times to know what had been going on. He’d whispered “Charlotte?” the minute Jason sat next to him and the answer that didn’t come said it all. He looked at Jay and had to admit he was looking better and better by the day. When Howard had seen him that first day on Ibiza, he looked a right mess. He knew Jason slept bad, or hardly slept at all and his face was showing it. He was looking skinny, he’d never been chubby of course, but now it was really bad. Howard had tried to make him eat all sorts of fat foods but Jason was still clinging to his fruit and dried nuts diet. Howard would never understand that.
Jason felt strange. There he was, with old friends. Or had they been his friends? He’d never chosen these people to work with, let alone live with and experience things with that were just so far out of reach for other people. Take That had brought him great things, mainly prosperity, but it had been hard times. Maybe Rob was notorious for hating his former manager, Jason’s feelings weren’t far from that either. He had given up the one thing during Take That that he had found so important in live: control. And he didn’t feel like talking about it either. He wanted to be with Charlotte more than ever.
Howard was sitting next to him, dangling his leg over the other. Jason still couldn’t believe a shy person like Howard had ever been on stage practically naked. Howard really was the most reserved member of Take That with a sly sense of humour that Jason adored. Jason wondered, could Howard still do it, that backflip?

They all seemed to be waiting for Gary to speak, hadn’t he been the one to call them all? Dawn put the last bottles of beer on the table and with a small squeeze in Gary’s neck she announced her departure. As she softly closed the door to the kitchen behind her, Gary spoke:
“Guys, I really appreciate your presence here tonight, I really do.” His gaze lingered on Rob for a second longer. “For all of us, different reasons as it may be, this is not an easy night. Some of us haven’t spoken in months. Sometimes even years.” Again, his eyes found those of Rob. “Nigel, he phoned me to ask me if Take That wanted to do a documentary, you know, it’s been ten years nearly since we split. Not only has he phoned me, he phoned Mark and Rob too. Why on earth he hasn’t called you two,” he looked at Jason and Howard, “is beyond me.”
Jason felt his muscles contract as the cold voice of Nigel still rung in his ears; “Just a decorator.”
“I was just a car painter, of course he didn’t phone me,” Howard’s sarcastic answer with a hint of truth cut through Jason’s thoughts.
For a few seconds Jason stared at him with his mouth open, then they both roared with laughter.
“I thought he only used that on me,” Jason said.
“No mate, certainly not.” Howard grinned.
Mark saw Robbie reaching for a bottle of beer and thought for a split second to stop him but he let him take it anyway. “So Nigel wants us to do a docu? Like a real-life thing, I dunno..I did that already.” Referring to his Celebrity Big Brother adventure, which he’d really enjoyed.
“And of course, Nigel will be directing this documentary?” Jason asked.
Gary nodded, “It will be about our story this time, how we felt and how we lived it.”
“Yeah, but Nigel will still be there won’t he?” Jason asked again.
“I’m not doing anything, if Nigel will be there.” Rob finally spoke his first words of that evening. “I will never ever work with him again, and as you may know I am prepared to sue him all the way up to hell and back to stop him from making me work with him on this fucking documentary.”
“You can’t really ask Nigel to step down from this can you? We were his band.” Gary slightly raised his voice and that’s when he knew he made the biggest mistake of that evening. The tension that had surrounded this group the day Rob left the band was back.
“Were…indeed WERE. That is the past tense you are using there mate, and I intend to keep it that way.” Robbie snapped.
“Guys, please..” Mark tried.
Gary continued, “Nigel isn’t the easiest man to work with, I know that, but he has done for us what he did. He made us what we are today.”
“Yeah, look what he made of me!” Robbie was now filling up a glass with the Vodka that Howard had used a second ago. “Didn’t he make a brilliant popstar out of me, well excuse ME for feeling that I did that myself! Gary Barlow he’s still got you under his spell, making you think you were nothing without him. The only thing Nigel made out of me, was a sorry little man with no self-esteem.” He downed the glass and filled up another one which he downed just as fast, and then turned around and with full intension to leave this room and not caring where he’d end up, he headed towards the kitchen door.
Scaring the shit out of Dawn, who was desperately eavesdropping on the other side, he crashed into the kitchen and sat down at the table, his head resting in his hands.
Dawn quickly glanced inside to give her husband “the look”, Gary was convinced only female species were equipped with “the look”, you only got it when you had done something really, really wrong and after you’d gotten it, it meant you weren’t supposed to come near her for a long time.
As Dawn shut the door again, silence fell upon the remaining four.

Julia heard the door open and sat upright instantly. For a few seconds her mind was lost. Where was she? When she felt the soft couch underneath her and saw the stack of video games next to the TV she remembered: she was at Rob’s house. Would that be him now? She stood up and was totally surprised to see not Rob, but a middle aged woman standing in the living room.
“Who are you?” they said in unison.
Jan Williams looked at the girl before her. She had seen many girls, never did Robbie leave any of them alone in his house though. She was not like all the other girls she had seen. She looked sophisticated, friendly.
“I’m Jan,” she said, “Robbie’s mum.”
“Oh it’s so nice to meet you! Robbie’s has told so much about you.” Julia’s face lit up and Jan instantly liked her.
“Would you like a drink? I can make you some tea?” Julia asked. Jan waved her hands as if waving away her question.
“Oh no love, I’ll make myself a cuppa. Do you want some?” Julia nodded. “Did he leave you all by yourself here?”
“Well,” Julia was unsure if she was supposed to tell this to his mother but then again, Robbie always spoke with so much love about her, it probably wouldn’t do any harm. “He’s over at Gary’s house and I wanted to wait for him to come home, you know he might feel a bit down or angry or sad.”
“Why would he be sad because he’s at Gary’s?” Jan asked her, not understanding that Julia wasn’t talking about Rob’s band member Gary Nuttal.
“I mean Gary Barlow.” Julia said.
Jan nearly dropped the milk. “He’s at Gary BARLOW’s house? Doing what?”
Julia told Jan everything she knew and the two of them felt relieved to finally have someone to share their worries with.

“Here, have this,” Dawn held out a glass of water to Robbie. He took it hesitantly. The cold fluid seemed to kick right into his brain and he immediately started doubting what he just had done.
“I need to make a phone call,” Robbie stated it more as a fact to Dawn than as a question because he was pulling his mobile out of his pocket already. Dawn discretely turned her back as if that would make it impossible for her to overhear the conversation.
She heard him saying to the other that he “completely fucked it up” and was pleading her, or him for that matter, to come over and pick him up. After Robbie nearly broke down in tears and was practically sobbing into the phone that he couldn’t handle this, the person seemed to give in.
Robbie turned to Dawn and asked her if she could give directions to the person on the phone.
“I’ll pass you Dawn, she’ll explain you how to drive, thanks love, thanks again..” Robbie said into the phone, “Why not? She’ll be able to explain everything perfectly to you….don’t be mad I’m not just giving you the address, here she comes,” and Rob pressed the phone into Dawn’s hands who was very curious why the person on the other end was obviously not willing to talk to her.
“Hi, this is Dawn,” she said.
“Hi Dawn, it’s me…Julia.”

“I think Robbie’s right. I don’t want to work with Nigel either.” Jason said with a small voice and quickly took a sip from his water, as if dodging an explanation for this statement.
Howard said nothing but rubbed his chin which was never a good sign, Gary knew.
“If it is so difficult still for all of us to be together and talk about these things, maybe we shouldn’t do it in the first place, Nigel or no Nigel.” Mark said while chewing the inside of his cheek, a strange nervous tick he’d picked up lately.
Howard nodded.
“Or maybe we should start seeing Take That as a four-piece.” Gary said.
“Why are you so eager to get us back together and do this documentary? What is he offering you? A certain spot in heaven after you’ve died? It can’t be money, please Gaz, don’t tell me it’s money?” Jason was getting suspicious and moved to sit at the tip of the couch so he could get a good look into the eyes of Gary.
“I’m only doing this if Robbie is,” Mark said softly, thinking of the words of his manager: The option of Take That doing a comeback.

Robbie stood outside in front of the back door leading to the kitchen and smoked a fag. Dawn sat on the kitchen table feeling stunned. Did she really just get off the phone with a person she hadn’t spoken to for nearly ten years. She hardly believed that she really had Julia on the phone just then. And how bizarre was it that eight years ago, Julia had this fling with Howard and was now a “friend” as Rob had called her, to another Take That member.
Her car pulled up onto the drive way and Dawn went outside to greet her.
“I cannot believe this! How are you?” Dawn greeted her warmly, she knew that Julia must be aware of the fact that Howard was inside this house too, and all of a sudden she understood her hesitation to come here.
Robbie was already taking a seat in the car and Julia was very keen on leaving as soon as possible.
“Please, Jules, call me tomorrow, I really missed you!” Her concern was genuine and it made Julia’s eyes water.
“I promise I will,” she said and the two women hugged. Then, Dawn turned towards the car and said to Robbie: “Don’t worry about Gary, I’ll talk to him, it’ll be fine.” Rob turned red, feeling he didn’t deserve her niceness.
***
“I’m going out for a smoke,” Mark said.
“I’ll come with,” Howard stood up too.
***
“I just don’t think we should do anything and pretend we all loooove each other again,” Mark exaggerated the word “love” and blinked his eyes while he said it. Howard laughed. As he pushed the door open with his back, allowing Mark to step outside first he started: “Maybe we oughta…”
Mark looked at Howard, waiting for him to continue when he saw the look on his face. Howard’s mouth fell open and he did a few steps forward.
“No way..” he whispered.
Mark looked into the direction Howard was looking, he saw a woman standing next to a car. Her coat blown open by the wind. She was wearing a black dress, nothing fancy but it looked great on her, her high heels made her calves come out beautifully. Her blond hair with a hint of strawberry colour was blown around her face. When she saw the two men stepping outside, she automatically swept the hair from her face. Mark saw a shocked look and then he recognised her.
“Mate is that…Jules?”
Howard didn’t answer but with his mouth open he walked towards her.
Julia felt as if her feet were glued to the ground.
Robbie was looking at Julia and saw her face turn red and then drain from all the colour. She was shaking and looked as if she was about to faint. He climbed out of the car. Howard came walking towards her, his face in between happy and sad, as if both emotions were raging through him.
Howard finally reached her and made himself swallow before he spoke because he didn’t trust his voice.
“Hi, how are you?” He was able to squeeze out of himself.
“I…” Julia stammered.
“What are you doing here?” Sadness seemed to win it from the happy emotion, and his body language suddenly showed all the signs of somebody ready to attack.
Robbie saw that too.
“I…” Julia’s throat felt as if somebody was trying to choke her. Unable to think, images from their one and only hot night together, the pain and the abortion flashed before her eyes.
Finally, the one question that had been on Howard’s mind all those years, found its way to his mouth.
“Why, Jules, Why?”
All she could do was shake her head.
“Why did you have it taken away?” Howard was taking another step forward, his face close to hers. “Why..why did you take away my baby?” He spoke through gritted teeth trying to control the outburst of anger that was standing on the threshold.
“That’s enough,” Dawn stepped in between them and gently pushed Howard aside. “Go inside Howard, this is not the time nor the place.”
“It never is, but I have the right to a proper answer!”
Desperately, Howard grabbed her arms. “Please, Julia tell me. Why?”
“Let go of her,” Rob stood behind Howard, his eyes flashing dangerously.
“Are you with him?” Howard asked, his voice pitched as if it was the most ridiculous thing he’d ever heard.
“He’s a friend.” Julia squeaked, trembling from tip to toe.
“Really?” His voice dripped with sarcasm now.
His face came even closer to her now, “I bet he’s a lousy kisser.”
And without any warning, he pressed his lips upon hers, roughly holding on to her shoulders so she couldn’t move.
Robbie saw what he did and white hot with anger he pulled him away from her.
“Stop it Howard!” Dawn cried out and Mark pulled Howard from the arms of Robbie.
“Be careful mate, get inside, don’t screw things up even more.” Mark hissed in Howard’s ear and he pushed him towards the kitchen door.
Howard walked towards the door, his head hung low, adrenaline roaring through his veins.
As he closed the door behind him, he took one last look over his shoulders. Julia stood there, shaking as if freezing cold and tears running down her face.
Howard knew enough, he’d felt it. That split second before Robbie pulled him from her, her body had started to melt, involuntary she had leaned in to him and he had felt what he had felt happen so many times before.
Julia would never admit to it, nor would she allow her body to decide over her brain but she wanted him the moment she saw him. Those blue eyes only seemed to have turned bluer over the years, his short curls, those tiny wrinkles near his eyes, it made her stomach turn over with lust.
But worst of all, she knew that Howard had felt it too.
