Sleep was out of the question. They sat the whole night in the living room, jumping at every noise and staring out the windows, barely talking.
Ray stood and went to the kitchen to make some more coffee even though he was starting to get the shakes and he felt like he was going to jump out of his own skin.
“I don’t think we should go anywhere alone.” Bob said from behind him, making Ray jump, “I know it’s just the kitchen, but,” he shrugged.
“It’s cool.” Ray was glad to have the company. He was getting a little creeped out being all by himself, “Do you really think it will come back? We did set it on fire. Maybe it will just fuck off and go find some worshipers who will, like, not set it on fire?”
Bob raised an eyebrow, “Vengeance Demon. I really don’t think he’s going to just let it go, the whole setting him on fire thing.”
Ray hung his head, “I kind of figured as much, but you know, you can always hope.” The coffee was finally ready and he pulled out the whole pot, taking it into the living room.
Mikey and Gerard instantly filled their cups and gulped it down.
Frank poured for himself and the other two men before sipping slowly. He was starting to fade and he knew it. He looked aver at where Autumn was already sleeping in Mikey’s lap. He hadn’t let her go since he’d gotten home.
Ryan was on the verge of passing out as well. His head kept lolling on Gerard’s shoulder and he would wake himself up before he actually got to sleep. Ray was shaking and twitching, so wired that he probably wasn’t going to sleep for another few hours at the very least. Bob seemed to be the best off, clearly used to staying up all night waiting for horrible things to come get him.
Ray jittered his way over to the computer and started a new search for ways to get rid of the demon, “You know what would be awesome? If I just found some kind of handy recipe for murdering evil dolls. I mean it is the internets.” He sighed, “Why can’t you remember the site you found it on!” he asked Bob. Then he screamed, startling Ryan so he actually jumped a little, “What the fuck?! All it keeps showing me is fucking Buffy!” he sighed, “The interwebs pick one hell of a time to fail me.”
Mikey stroked Autumn’s hair, “What are we going to do? We have to sleep sometime. Shit I have to work in the morning.” He looked at the clock, “I mean in a few hours.”
“I don’t know. We could move? Maybe go to Bolivia or Canada, Iceland?” Frank suggested.
“I don’t think that would help all that much.” Ray sighed and banged his head on the desk.
“So we’re just going to wait around till he comes back?” Gerard said angrily, startling Ryan again.
Autumn woke up abruptly, lifting her head, “What?” she looked around panicked.
“Shh. It’s alright. We’re just a little wired. And Gee’s freaking out.” Mikey petted her hair, glaring at his brother.
“I think I’m entitled to freak out just a little.” Gerard sniffed and turned away.
Ray stood and began to pace, “Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck!” he went t from one end of the room to another.
“I need a cigarette.” Frank sighed and looked longingly out the door.
“I think given the circumstances, you can smoke in the house Frankie.” Autumn sighed.
Frank looked at her with such relief, and he, Gerard and Ryan lit cigarettes. None of them had wanted to leave the house by themselves, even for a nicotine fix.
Mikey gently put his arm around Autumn, relieved when she leaned into him. Every time she looked at him and he saw he bruises on her face, he got pissed, and sad. He should have been there. It was all his fault that it had happened and he was determined that nothing bad would ever happen to her again.
‘Whoa.’ He told himself, ‘Slow down there dude. Ever? When did I start thinking that it was going to be forever?’ he looked down at Autumn just as she looked up and she gave him a half hearted smile, ‘Who am I kidding? I love her.’ He gave her what he hoped was a reassuring smile and kissed her forehead, “All you alright?”
She shook her head and laughed ruefully, “Pretty fucking far from it honey.”
“I think that we should try and get some sleep. Mikey, call in sick. Ray, you too.” Gerard said.
“We can sleep in my room.” Autumn suggested, “I have the biggest bed and it’s the cleanest.” She looked at Ray and Frank meaningfully.
“I think that sounds like the best thing we could do.” Bob nodded.
“I don’t think I could sleep.” Ray said continuing to pace.
“All the same, I think we should go up there. You can play some WoW or something until the caffeine wears off.” Bob persisted.
They all stood and trouped upstairs, stopping on the way up so Frank could pee, the group hovering outside the bathroom door. If anyone found it a little absurd, they said nothing.
Ray stationed himself at Autumn’s computer, starting a fresh search for vengeance demons, trying every search engine he’d ever heard of, then running a search for search engines to look for more links. Mikey, Autumn,
Frank, Gerard and Ryan all lay down on the bed, leaving very little room.
Bob laid down across the foot of the bed, pulling a blanket over himself that he’d grabbed off the back of the couch, “Good night?”
Frank hit him with a pillow.
Some time very early in the morning, Ray’s caffeine high gave out and when he went to crawl into bed, he noticed that his friends had all gravitated toward each other and were clutching onto on another. He laid himself next to Gerard and immediately fell asleep when the other man reached out and pulled him closer.
Late in the afternoon, Autumn woke up with a strangled gasp from a nightmare she could barely remember. She gently disentangled herself from Mikey and Frank, slipping off the bed and going to her bathroom. She turned on the shower and began to scrub her entire body ruthlessly. She felt like she would never be clean again. It was the fifth or sixth shower she’d had since getting back from the hospital, but she could still smell Jeff on her.
Mikey woke up and noticed that Autumn was missing. He heard the shower running and went into the bathroom where he found her huddled against the tile wall, crying and scrubbing her raw skin with a loofa. He jumped in, fully clothed and stilled her hands, “Baby, stop! You’re going to hurt yourself!” he pried the sponge from her fingers and held her, again berating himself for being late.
She sobbed against him, clutching onto his shoulders, “Mikey, I-” she couldn’t even finish the thought.
“It’s going to be alright honey. It’s going to be fine.” He rocked her gently, tears of his own sliding down his face.
Autumn started shivering violently, despite the warmth of the spray in the shower. All Mikey could do was hold her and whisper reassuring things into her hair.
Frank woke up when he heard Mikey yell, but stopped himself from going into the bathroom, thinking that too many people might scare Autumn.
He thought about going down to the kitchen to make some coffee, but instantly vetoed that idea at the thought of going down there alone.
Instead, he got out of bed and opened Autumn’s window, perching on the ledge so he could have a cigarette.
Looking down, he saw shattered glass on the patio, “Oh shit.” He went to the bed and shook Bob awake, “Bobby!
Bob!” he hissed, trying and failing at not waking up Gerard and Ryan.
“Wassit?” Bob muttered and sat up.
“There’s glass on the patio. Like door glass. Come with me to check it out.” Frank said.
Gerard and Ryan hopped up, “We’ll all go.”
The four men cautiously went down the stairs to the back sliding glass door and gasped. The whole door had been shattered.
“How the fuck did we sleep through that?” Ryan asked softly.
Gerard shook his head.
The boys getting up to go downstairs woke Ray up. It was aided by the late afternoon sun hitting him directly in the eyes, and he got up, sitting on the edge of Autumn’s bed. Hearing the shower running reminded him that he had to pee like crazy so he set his feet on the floor, heading to the bathroom in the hall, trying to look in every direction at once. When he finally reached the bathroom he and Frank shared, he closed and locked the door, sighing with relief as he emptied his bladder.
A noise from behind him made the stream of urine dry up ad he whirled around.
There was nothing in the bathroom.
Shaking his head at his own jumpiness, he resumed peeing, thinking about what they were going to do. They couldn’t spend their entire lives in Autumn’s room. They would have to go out sometime.
“Ray!” he heard Frank shout worriedly, “Ray where the fuck did you go?”
“I’m pissing!” he yelled at the door, turning his head, “Oh fuck!” he buttoned his jeans and made a dash for the door when he saw Frankie in the bathtub.
A very different Frankie. Instead of a little creepy wood carving, he was now a giant terrifying carving the size of a wrestler with a deadly pointed spear and the same malicious grin on his face.
The door was stuck, “Guys! Fucking the door! Help!” he shouted, banging on the wood, yanking uselessly on the knob.
Frank started pounding on the door, trying to turn the knob, “It’s locked Ray! What’s going on?”
Frank’s only answer was a bloody spear point stabbing through the wood, barely missing his own belly, “Ray!” he screamed and tried to kick down the door.
He could hear a faint gurgling as the spear was drawn back and thrust through again, this time coming out over Frank’s shoulder, right where Ray’s heart would be.
Gerard and Bob pulled Frank away from the door, “Man! He’s gone! You’re going to get yourself killed!”
They dragged him back into Autumn’s room, where Ryan immediately locked the door and stuffed a towel in the crack under it.
“Ray!” Frank cried tears streaming down his face.
Gerard and Bob’s face were equally tear streaked as they huddled on the ground, clutching each other and sobbing.
Mikey burst from the bathroom soaking wet, “What happened?” his friends were beyond speech and he looked around, “Where’s Ray?” when the men began sobbing harder, Mikey’s own face crumpled and he fell to the floor, “No.” he whispered.
