A/N: Okay, so I'm still alive, I haven't been in any serious trouble, just spent a few days with my roommate, then hit a batch of writer's block (with a half-finished chapter). But hopefully it's all gone, as I finished up this chapter (and have another almost finished chapter for my "Family Tradition" fic, in case you guys are worried about me dropping it). So here's the newest chapter. *hugs*

Natalie knew that she would never forget her first on-base function in New Jersey, it was a combined effort with the nearby private school, in order to have more young people to attend, and the entire base had been buzzing with the excitement. Even couples who didn’t have children old enough to be a part of the festivities were excited. It was to be a costumed theme dance, with a theme of (no surprise here) World War Two era. The revelation of the theme to the teenagers was met with chuckles at the memory of their conversation about the junior officers training with their other friends.
The teens were allowed to invite others from off base, but the guests would have to leave the base before a posted curfew, which they claimed to be for security reasons, but it simply meant that when the curfew came around, the party would simply be moved to another location off-base, where there would no doubt be a wilder gathering. Bob had gathered enough courage to ask Celestina DeMarco to the evening, and had almost fainted at her acceptance, much to the amusement of the others at the table. As for Natalie, all the boys had teased her about who she would be going with, but she refused to tell any of them who she would be going to the dance with, claiming that it was a secret for herself and her date to know.
As the weekend of the dance approached, the preparations and anticipation quickly mounted as the base seemed to come alive with excitement. The Bryar household was in chaos at the hands of the twins, each determined to have the best costume and such for the dance possible, and pulling their parents into the arguments. The Bryar twin coin received more use in that one week than it had in the entire year to date. And so when the fateful night finally arrived, there was an air of much needed relief, especially from the parents.
Bob left early to go fetch Celestina before he would return home to suffer through the endless rounds of pictures from his mother, only to be stifled by the amount of chaos from Celestina’s family. He thought he would die of embarrassment if he had to meet another of her siblings, who warned him of being careful with their sister. After spending more time than he would have liked, he finally managed to escort Celestina to his family’s car that his dad had let him borrow for the night. And thus one of the Bryar twins made their way to the dance.
Natalie had managed to keep her date and secret plot to herself and those involved up until the very night of the dance. She felt rather good about herself and her little scheme, and danced around her room singing along to her iPod as she dressed for the night. Her mom came and helped her with styling her hair into a lovely arrangement, even managing a few curls from her pole-straight hair. So when the doorbell rang, she was completely ready to head over to the dance, and to begin her scheme. She nearly skipped down the stairs over to the door where she grinned at the person on the other side as she opened the door.
“Frankie! You look spiffy. Come on in.”
Opening the door a little farther to let Frank come in, Natalie grinned at his costume. It looked almost authentic, and she was a little afraid to ask where he had gotten the costume. She playfully kissed him on the cheek before shutting the door and taking his hand to lead him into the living room, where her parents were waiting to see their daughter’s friend.
“Mom, Dad, this is Frank Iero. He’s one of our friends from school. Frank, these are my parents, Joseph and Helen Bryar.”
Joseph stood and extended a hand to the boy his daughter had brought in. He couldn’t fault the boy for much, as he seemed like a decent sort, although a part of him was confused that he hadn’t heard anything about him before now. Normally Natalie was a talkative sort of person, especially when on the topic of any of her crushes or boyfriends over the years. So Joseph was a bit confused, within reason, as the only person Natalie seemed to talk about as much as would befit any attachment was the younger Toro, who had been a familiar face as well.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Bryar. I assure you that Natalie and Bob have said nothing but glowing things about you.”
Frank was beginning to feel rather out of place standing in the living room with Natalie and her parents. Mrs. Bryar was grinning as if she knew something sneaky, while Mr. Bryar looked as if he were trying to figure out a rather difficult riddle. And Natalie looked as if she were enjoying herself immensely. So he easily guessed that something was strange. He turned to Natalie and raised an eyebrow getting a little suspicious of her.
Natalie grinned as Frank seemed to suspect something of her. She wouldn’t let him know that she had her own little plot in mind, at least until it was the proper time, of course. She smiled her way through the endless rounds of pictures that her mom seemed determine to take, before quickly pulling Frank away from the parents and off to the dance.

Ray stood pulling at the tie around his neck, wondering when his parents would go back to their house rather than hanging around at the dance under the guise of chaperoning. They had been relentless in their torture of him already, having snapped more pictures of him with Gretchen than he cared to have taken, along with other means of torture. Suddenly he caught sight of another arrival to the dance and grinned. He quickly motioned for Gretchen to walk with him over towards the newcomers.
“Wow, Natalie, nice costume. And Frankie, that looks like an authentic uniform. I’m sure you know Gretchen Sinclair, Frankie. Gretchen, you know Frank, right?”
Although it was obvious by the slight blush on the petite blonde’s cheeks that she knew Frank. Natalie bit her lower lip to keep from giggling at the mock glare her friend gave her, as Natalie was sure that Gretchen was cursing herself for ever having told Natalie about the crush she had on Frank since the fourth grade, when her family had moved to the area. But Natalie only grinned, knowing that Frank was less than apathetic towards Gretchen as well.
“Yeah, we have history together. You look great, Gretchen. Would you object to me stealing your date for a dance, Ray?”
“Be my guest. We’re just friends here.”
“Would you like to dance, Miss Sinclair?”
Gretchen giggled lightly and nodded, the blush deepening over her cheeks as Frank bowed and held out his arm to lead her to the dancefloor, obviously having fun with the theme of the dance. As soon as the two were out of earshot, Ray and Natalie dissolved into laughter.
“Those two are hopeless. But Ray, what happened to your hair? Please tell me you didn’t cut it.”
Ray smiled as she asked him about his hair, which was slicked down over his head and pulled back into a proper style for the theme of the party. Somehow his mother had managed to get the unruly locks tamed down for one night at least.
“Mom would have loved to cut my hair most definitely. But no, it’s just pulled back somehow. I’m sure that you would be more familiar with the methods than me. I just hope that the parents will leave soon enough. Mom decided to ‘chaperone’ the dance. I think it’s a load, but Dad couldn’t get her to stay away. You look great though.”
Natalie laughed as Ray joked about his mom’s overbearing personality, although she could easily see that he was only teasing. When he complimented her appearance, she couldn’t keep from blushing lightly. Although she noticed movement heading in their direction and rolled her eyes, laughing a bit.
“I think your mother has noticed us. She seems to be heading in this direction. Any escape routes that you can see?”
Sure enough, a few moments later, Mrs. Toro was standing beside the two teens talking in her normal hurried speed. Natalie had smiled at Ray’s dad who followed behind his wife with a mixed look of bored amusement, especially as he noticed Ray and Natalie standing together chatting happily.
“Oh, here you are Natalie dear. You look lovely, doesn’t she Samuel?”
“Yes, lovely. I hope you two are enjoying yourselves. Maria and I were just leaving as there are plenty of chaperones already here for the evening. Come along now. You two kids have fun.”
Samuel gave the two teens a quick wink before pulling his wife towards the door, ignoring her fuss. As soon as they had reached the outside of the mess hall, he leaned over and whispered something in her ear that seemed to appease her as she had no more arguments for the moment. And with that, the parents left the dance, causing Ray to sigh with relief and Natalie to giggle at the unexpected departure. Perhaps whatever Mr. Toro had whispered to his wife was more convincing than the teens would know.
“Do you want to dance?”
“Sure, that sounds great.”
Ray held out his arm to Natalie and she took it with a grin, letting him lead her out onto the makeshift dancefloor just as the song was changing to a slower paced song. Natalie caught sight of Frank and Gretchen a few feet away and managed to keep from blushing at the look the other girl sent her way. She could tell that Gretchen was suspicious and would be sure to question her motives soon enough.
“Frank and Gretchen look like they’re having fun. Perhaps now they will be a little more likely to actually do something about the mutual feelings they seem to have for each other. Or at least we can hope they will. I have to admit when you first mentioned it, I was suspicious and a little doubtful, but now I get it.”
“Of course you do. Besides, it’s much more fun to have two more friends along with us for the night rather than just going together ourselves. At least from what the adults think.”
Natalie bit her bottom lip at how botched the phrasing of her comment had been. She had been flattered when Ray had asked her to go to the dance with him. So much so that she was suddenly very worried about what would happen with the small budding friendship she seemed to have developed with him along with the other guys at school if she were to start to date any one of the guys exclusively. Although she hated to think of going behind the guys’ backs to see each of them anyways.
“What’s wrong?”
Ray’s voice had startled her out of her thoughts and she looked up at him with a smile, a faint blush tinting her cheeks. She shook her head lightly, pushing all worries from her mind for the moment. She would at least have fun tonight before trying to sort out whatever nonsense she had gotten herself into with the boys.
“Nothing. I was just thinking of something that I needed to do for school.”
“Well how about you forget about it for tonight? Or is it that urgent that you have to seemingly ruin such a promising evening?”
“Nothing that important, just some group stuff that I have to sort out. But the night isn’t ruined. I just happened to remember it. But what where were we before the unwanted distraction?”
“Oh, just dancing. Nothing in particular that would be noteworthy.”
Natalie laughed and glanced around the room, smiling as she caught sight of Bob across the small area dancing with Cici. She ignored the annoying brother glare he shot her way as he had no doubt noticed that she was dancing with Ray, and pushed all curiosity on that matter from her head as well. Although she giggled when she saw Cici pull her brother’s attention back to her by reaching up and planting a kiss on his lips. She heard Ray’s laugh and knew that he had saw the kiss as well.
“It seems they have the right idea on that one, I believe.”
Natalie turned to look up at Ray, a small confused look on her face, and was a bit shocked as he leaned over and lightly brushed his lips over hers. It was a feather-light touch, but from the blush covering her cheeks one would think they had been caught in a rather compromising position. She absently covered her lips with a hand and suddenly found the shoes she had borrowed from her mother to be of the utmost interest, unable to look at Ray.
“So you two sneaks just wanted to set us up and have your own fun, huh? Well bravo on that plot. I certainly don’t mind that the pretty girl who invited me is off kissing one of my other friends. I think I’ll just steal his date for myself.”
Hearing Frank’s voice, Natalie wanted to melt into the floor, especially seeing the smirk on his face as he teased them for being caught. And seeing the grin on Gretchen’s face, Natalie knew that her friend now considered the bit of embarrassment repaid, for the moment at least.
“Attention young people! The commander has just informed me that the curfew for non-base attendants is in precisely one hour. We are happy to have you visiting, but must request compliance with this security measure. Enjoy the remainder of your dance.”
As the younger solider stepped down from the microphone at the small stage type area that was set up on one end of the mess hall, Frank scoffed and motioned with his head to the door to his friends. If they were going to be kicked out in an hour, why not just move to a more complying location now? The night was still young and there was still plenty of fun to be had.
“What do you guys say to finding our own fun now? I personally don’t like it when people start pushing me around. I know a nice little spot we can grab some food and drinks before having a few more dances. We might even get a discount or something just for kicks for being in costume. What do you guys say?”
Natalie laughed and nodded as Frank suggested going somewhere else. She had never really liked the phony base parties, and this one, while certainly more interesting than the others she had attended, was still a base party. She smiled as both Gretchen and Ray agreed.
“Sure, let’s go.”
And so with that, the four teens left the mess hall in search of their own brand of fun.
