Chapter Twelve: Finding Home
Maddie walked into her empty house throwing her purse and coat on her bed as she passed by her room heading into the kitchen. As she poured herself a drink, crown and coke, more crown then coke; she realized that her two friends had barely been home at all in the last two months. They seemed to be avoiding each other. It had been almost two months since she had really talked to them, two months since she had seen Pete or Aly. Well technically 1 month, 3 weeks, 4 days, 12 hours and 14 minutes but who was counting anyway. Maddie didn’t realize how hard it was going to be for her to stay away from them. The first couple of days were the hardest; Aly called at least twice a day but Maddie didn’t answer the phone, she couldn’t hear the little girl’s voice because it would break her heart, but after almost two weeks the phone calls had stopped. Each time Aly had called she would leave a message but Maddie never listened to them instead she opted to be a coward and just deleted them. As hard as it was to ignore the phone calls when they came it was harder when they stopped altogether because that meant it was over. Shaking her head she heard the front door open, her friends had been avoiding her it felt like; both were rarely home and if they were then they were each in there respective rooms pretending that Maddie didn’t live here. Not that she could blame them. I have been drinking a lot and a drinking Maddie is a mean Maddie. Tonight she heard more than just Trista and Brylee’s voices though; my car is in the shop, they probably think I’m not home. Maddie couldn’t help but be nosey when she heard one of the male voices, Gabe, say her name she listened a little harder getting closer to doorway.
“How’s Maddie?” Gabe
“I don’t know, we kind of haven’t really talked to her in a while.” Brylee answered before Trista could think up a lie.
“What? Why not?” Patrick. What, why is Patrick here? Maddie was more intrigued now.
“The girl that lives in Maddie’s room isn’t Maddie. She’s a shell of her old self. Pretending like nothing happened, like she didn’t abandon Pete and Aly.” The anger that was present in Trista’s words was intense.
“Yea, I get that but maybe she really thought that she was doing the right thing.” Patrick was sticking up for Maddie and her friends were putting her down, what a twist of fate.
“I get that ya know? But Aly called her for two weeks and she didn’t answer, ignored the phone calls and deleted the messages without even listening to them. That’s not Maddie, that’s not even Maddie on a bad day. Look I don’t really wanna talk about this anymore.” Brylee seemed to be just as angry as Trista if not more. “How’s Pete? I mean he looked fine tonight but is he really?”
“He’s nervous mostly now-a-days for the whole tour and taking Aly without a nanny, whether she’s going to be ok and what not. He just loves Aly and wants to make sure that she’s safe.” At this point Maddie had peeked around the corner comfortable with the idea of being a voyeur, Patrick and Gabe looked the same not much had changed appearance wise. She had to reposition herself as they made there way into the living room so she could still see them but they couldn’t see her.
“Why doesn’t he hire a new nanny then? Get a girl that doesn’t mind traveling with a bunch of hott guys and loves children that would solve his problem right?” Gabe and Patrick both chuckled at Brylee’s suggestion.
“Oh, hunny,” Patrick’s tone was almost like he was talking to a child, he saw the glare that Brylee gave him he leaned over and kissed her on the forehead, what when the hell did they become a couple, oh man. “I’m just joking; look asking Pete to hire another nanny is like asking him to murder me. He doesn’t want any other nanny, and we’ve all seen the way Aly reacts when someone even mentions it jokingly. No one is going to be good enough to replace Maddie; speaking of which are you sure she’s not home?”
“Her cars not here, neither is her stuff but back to the situation; I get the whole not wanting to replace Maddie but Pete’s making his life more difficult by not getting some kind of help.” Maddie knew that she shouldn’t be listening to this conversation it only made staying away hurt more. Trista was standing up and moving towards the kitchen after stating her opinion. “Hey, you guys hungry or thirsty? How about some drinks?”
“Hell yea, I could definitely go for a drink especially after hanging around all that sexual tension between that waitress and Ryland.” Gabe smirked as he remembers how Ryland’s jaw dropped when the girl gave him her number.
Shaking his head Patrick went back to the original topic, “Brylee, Trista you’ve known Maddie since forever and we’ve known Pete for a long time now and I don’t know about what you saw with Maddie but I’ve never seen Pete smile the way he did when he would talk about Maddie. I just hate seeing him so down. I don’t know why we can’t just force them to talk to one another.” They had all decided to join Trista in the kitchen, Maddie started to panic knowing her friends would be pissed if they found her listening to their conversations even though it was about her. She decided to hide, where? Where do I hide? Looking around she saw her only option was the pantry, opening the door quickly and quietly she got in shutting it almost completely before deciding that she wasn’t going to hide and removed herself from the pantry. They’re talking about me, my relationships, and my life to people that I have explicitly told them over the last two months not tell anything. Maddie stood with her arms crossed and her toe tapping, getting angrier the longer it took the two couples to get into the kitchen. Trista had opened her mouth to respond to him when she spotted Maddie standing in the kitchen.
“Shit.” She jumped because Maddie had scared her.
“It’s nice to see you too.” Maddie was trying to keep control of her emotions but the longer the four stared at her; the harder it became. “Oh please, don’t stop because the person you were talking about is standing in front of you. Continue and pretend like I’m not here, please pretend like I didn’t tell you to not talk about me to his people. I don’t care what kind of relationship you have with them I am not apart of it there for I shouldn’t be a topic of discussion for you four to have.” By the end of the sentence Maddie was yelling; her friends had never seen her this angry at them before.
“Maddie, were just worried.” Brylee tried to calm her down.
“You’re not worried about me; if you were you would have acted like you cared at some point in the past two months about me and the way I was feeling.”
“We do care, we’re just angry. I don’t like what you did, I hate that you keep acting like it didn’t happen. I also hate who you’re becoming, harsh, rude and cold. This isn’t you Maddie.” Brylee motioned towards where Maddie was standing. “I don’t know you.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry I can’t be the stupid innocent naïve girl I was before Tonya died, I just realized that I hurt people, even when I don’t mean to.” Maddie’s body was tense afraid to back down. “You didn’t think that maybe once in the last two months that this was just as hard for me to do as for them to have done to them? That maybe I can’t sleep, sometimes I don’t eat that I’m constantly unhappy. No you didn’t because you chose not to; you chose to be angry with me when all I need was your support for an hour. I know you don’t agree with me and I know that you think what I’m doing is ridiculous but I am doing it.”
“Why? Why if you’re so unhappy are you staying away?” Patrick asked before he could stop himself from saying anything. “Aly misses you like crazy even though it’s been two months she misses you more then you could imagine.”
“I don’t have to imagine, I feel the same exact way but it doesn’t change anything. The way I feel…” she stopped mid sentence not wanting to continue the thought she had been trying to ignore since she first starting working for Pete.
“The way you feel about Pete?” Gabe stated it without hesitation and flinched at the glare Maddie gave him. “You’re in love with him.”
Maddie shook her head vigorously trying to convince them and herself that she wasn’t; that she didn’t care about Pete anymore. “I’m done with this conversation; I have to work tomorrow.” She turned to leave trying to get out before she was tricked into saying something she shouldn’t.
“Maddie you can’t keep running, we all know that but I also think that if you keep trying to your going to lose the only good thing that has come into your life in long time. Just think about it.” After Brylee finished talking they moved away from the door way allowing Maddie to leave.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maddie spent the next five or six hours locked in her room, listening to music and trying to sleep, the last objective wasn’t working so well. The conversation from earlier still playing in her mind, things she wished she had said or asked. She constantly wondered how Pete and Aly were doing, if they truly missed her or if she was a distant memory by now. Every day that she tried to forget them only made her remember more, hurt more. Yawning she closed her eyes for the twentieth time in the last hour trying to will herself to sleep but before she had actually fallen asleep she heard a pounding on the front door, what the hell? Getting up she pulled her door open and saw the two on-her-shit-list friends standing in there own doorways.
“Oh let me get the door guys.” She saw them both shrug and continue to stand in there door ways. Rolling her eyes she pulled the front door open not bother to look out the peep hole. Her eyes went wide and she froze on the spot staring at the disheveled man in front of her.
“Pete?” Her voice was below a whisper, she wasn’t sure what else to say. Seeing him in person was almost surreal to her, the fact that he was standing in front of her was almost like a dream, maybe she had fallen asleep and doesn’t know it. Pinching herself hard on the leg she felt the pain, she knew she was awake and he was really in front of her. “What are you doing here?”
Pete could see the shock on Maddie’s face when she opened the door, she seemed scared and the way she whispered his name and the question that had followed confirmed that she was. “I need to talk to you.”
“Pete, it is three in the morning, can’t this wait till a decent hour?” Maddie knew she was on dangerous ground especially since all she wanted to do was talk to him, be close to him.
“No, I need you to listen to me and I have to do this now before I change my mind. Please just listen to me.” Maddie relented, letting him into the house and leading him into the living room she motioned for him to start talking. “I’ve gone over this in my head so many times but I’ve never gotten the courage to actually talk to you. Look, Maddie, Aly misses you. She talks about you daily, always comparing me to you; whether it’s how I make her sandwich wrong or how I don’t know as much as you do about any of her favorite television shows. I’m drowning without you Maddie; I just don’t want to take Aly down with me. Aly needs you to help her get through the next couple of years of her life. She won’t let me even think about hiring a nanny promising me that she will run her off within the first hour. Last night she threw a tantrum claiming that she wasn’t going on the tour with us without you with her. Please Maddie come back, come back to her.”
“Pete, I didn’t leave because of her. I left because of you, your offering me my job back and you’ve told me how Aly feels but you won’t tell me how you feel and that’s what I want to hear right now. With out knowing I need you to know that I can’t come back. I can’t ever come back”
“Can’t Maddie? Or won’t come back?”
“Both. I won’t and can’t come back as your nanny. I don’t want the nanny boundary; I just want to be Maddie.”
“Maddie I’m not offering you your job back.” Maddie was confused and it showed on her face. “Not once did I offer you a job, I want you to come back to Aly and to me. These past two months have been a bitch without you, I keep telling myself that it’s going to get easier that it can’t hurt forever but here I am two months later and I still feel like you ripped my heart out. You told me you love me and then you left, you didn’t even give me a chance to digest the information before you ran; ran as far as you could. I’m here to tell you that I need you in my life not just as Aly’s nanny but as apart of my own life.” He watched Maddie shaking her head almost like she didn’t want to believe what he had to say.
“Pete I can’t, I can’t do this.”
“I love you and it took me a whole three hours after you left to figure it out. Please don’t tell me that because I hesitated to tell you that I’ve lost you. If you can look me in the eye and tell me you don’t love me and that you don’t want to be apart of my life then I’ll leave without another word.” Maddie didn’t respond, keeping her head down. “I know you Maddie, I know you wanna come back to us, that you miss us.”
“Pete…” Maddie was try to figure out what she should say, going back almost seemed impossible after everything that happened, looking around Pete she realized something, “Where is Aly?”
“At home, I left Gabe with her.” Pete smiled, she asked about Aly that seems like a good sign.
“You left her alone with Gabe?” Maddie laughed, “You sure that’s safe? I mean he is a bit out there sometimes.” She knew her friends were still listening and that they probably had something do with Pete being here, she hoped Trista heard her words about Gabe.
“Maddie, it’s three in the morning she’s sleeping.” Pete had to get her back on topic, “Move in with me, Maddie.” Maddie’s face turned from a smile to a face of shock and confusion I love you, I miss you and I need you. Stop thinking and just act, move in with me, and be with me before we dont have the option anymore. He could see Maddie contemplating her answer and his face fell when she finally looked at him.
Pete, Im sorry. I just cant Maddie knew she has no real reason why she shouldnt but she couldnt say yes. She was scared, that was valid right? Pete was frustrated beyond belief.
Fine, if thats truly your answer and I cant change it, he was looking for an answer and the shake of Maddies head was just that, Ill leave. Im not going to tell Aly I came here; I dont want her to know for your sake. He caressed her cheek lightly, locking eyes with hers. I dont know whats stopping you Maddie, but we dont leave for the tour until Sunday ya know if you change your mind. He kissed her on the forehead and quickly let him self out of her house.

Gabe was sitting at the computer desk in Petes study awaiting his arrival when he heard footsteps, looking up he saw him, he looked to be defeated.
What happened? Gabe started because he was sure Pete wouldnt.
I showed up, she opened the door, man she still looks incredible, I begged her to listen to me and then I told her everything. I started with how Aly was feeling but thats not what she wanted to hear, she wanted to know how I felt.
How you felt about what? Gabe was a little confused.
How I felt about her, and I told her. I told her that I love her and that I want her to come back, to be with me and Aly. Pete took a deep breath, I told her what she wanted to know and she still told me no. She told me she couldnt.
Couldnt? She didnt even give you a valid reason as to why she couldnt?
No valid reason just that she couldnt. I think shes scared, scared of being happy or scared because shes never really gotten what she wanted before. I just wish she would trust me, let me be with her, love her. Pete sighed and shook his head. Man its late, Im gonna go to bed. We have to be at rehearsal by 9 tomorrow so you best be awake!
As Pete walked out, Gabe turned back to the instant message he had been typing, Im sorry baby it didnt work. I gotta go to bed. See you tomorrow.

Trista stared at her computer screen, seeing Gabes instant message pop up, she decided that it was her turn to talk to Maddie, the way they use to talk, no arguments just two, ok well Brylee too, so just three friends discussing life. She could hear Maddie in the kitchen and headed out of her room, knocking on Brylees door which opened immediately both continued towards the kitchen. Maddie was making coffee which didnt surprise either of her friends; they walked in and hopped onto the counters.
So you wanna talk about it? Maddie sighed as Trista inquired; all three were slightly uncomfortable in each others presence; which was highly unusual.
Whats there to talk about? I know you were listening and that you probably thought this scheme up with your boyfriends; I just wish you would respect my decision.
Maddie, we want you to be happy. Right now your not, youre not in any way. We know that Pete and Aly make you happy, you deserve that.
Im a big girl, I can handle myself and my own happiness without you two constantly interfering. Maddie was angry but not at her friends just at herself. Look, Im sorry, I just havent been sleeping and I hate this job I have; the past two months have just been hell.
It doesnt have to be, we all know that. Youre making your life hell, this is your decision. And you can change it, you have that power. Stop sitting in the passengers seat of your own life, move over and start driving. Trista and Brylee didnt wait for her response, they both turned and went back to there rooms hoping to get a couple of hours of sleep before they had work, leaving Maddie to her own thoughts.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maddie wasnt sure what she was doing. All day her mind wouldnt stray from the conversation with Pete that she had early this morning. At work she couldnt concentrate getting in trouble for ignoring phone calls and for missing a mandatory meeting. Her boss had called her into his room and asked if there was something that was going on that he should know about and before she could think she told him that she quit. Leaving her job she spent the next twelve hours trying to figure out what she had done and now she sat in her car looking at the huge house in front of her. Ok your starting to look like stalker, go knock on the door. Its three in the morning and Maddie had been sitting in front of Petes house for at least an hour not completely sure what she was doing. About two hours ago she decided she was tired of running that she wants to be with Pete and Aly, she wrote a quick note for her friends, packed some clothes and then left. Getting out of her car she popped her trunk getting her stuff out, knocked on the door and rang the doorbell.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Pete had just fallen asleep when he heard a knock on the front door and ring of the doorbell. Damnit Joe if your high again I swear to god, you better not wake Aly up this time. He slowly made his way down the hall, peeking into Alys room to make sure she was still sleeping and then continued down the stairs. Turning the light on to the front step he disarmed the alarm, unlocked the door and pulled it open. He froze when he saw her standing in front of him.
Maddie? Pete stared at her, the way her hair was pulled away from her face, the clandestine tank top and red hoodie she was wearing with her red and white Christmas pajama bottoms, they said hohoho all over them, and he saw how nervous she looked. He looked around her and finally realized what she was doing at his house. She had three suitcases and a plant. A plant, she reconsidered my offer.
I love you, Maddie blurted the only words that came to her mind. She dropped the plant on the ground and wrapped her arms around Pete. Please tell me its not too late.
I knew youd change your mind, I knew you couldnt get enough of me or Aly. Pete wrapped his own arms around her waist whispering in her ear that he loved her.
Hey no one said I was moving in forever, Maddie reacted jokingly to his cockiness, This is only temporary. She picked up her plant and grabbed one of her suitcases, knowing Pete would grab the other two, and she walked into her new home.
Yea, thats what you think; now that I have you Im not letting you go. Pete had moved the suitcase into the house and couldnt help the smirk that came over his face as he took in the sight of Maddie; Maddie wanting to live here with him, be with him. I had been hoping she would come back to me. The smile that formed on Maddies face made him realize that although they were more than likely going to have quite a few obstacles they were going to get through them together. He put his arms around her and asked, So how does it feel?
Like home. Her response was simple but it made Pete smile, and he did want he had wanted to do since he met her, kiss her without any repercussions to bite him in the ass and Maddie was more than willing to oblige him.
“I love you, I miss you and I need you. Stop thinking and just act, move in with me, and be with me before we don’t have the option anymore.” He could see Maddie contemplating her answer and his face fell when she finally looked at him.
“Pete, I’m sorry. I just can’t” Maddie knew she has no real reason why she shouldn’t but she couldn’t say yes. She was scared, that was valid right? Pete was frustrated beyond belief.
