“A hundred and fifteen people? That’s all we could come up with?” Chloe stood on a platform at the front of the large meeting room in the sub-basement. There were far too few people in the large room. Ninety-five of them had come from Bryar Enterprises while the other twenty were people from Contract Valley who had been on the police force or in the military and wanted to help.
“I’ve made a few phone calls to the other BE branches and they are sending another fifteen, but we have the majority of the shooters here. It’s the best I could do, Chloe.” Bill sounded warped, tired beyond all his years.
Sighing, Chloe stood on tiptoe and gave him a kiss on the cheeks. “Thanks, Bill. I’m sorry I snapped. I’m just a little strained right now.”
“You have every right to be, Chlo. Now shouldn’t we announce to everyone why they’re here? Or should we wait for everyone to get back? Or in Spencer and Rick’s case, wake up.”
“Naida said they’d be up by the time everyone was supposed to be here. We still have another five minutes. I’m sure her and Jon will be here soon. I just hope nothing went wrong and she decided not to come.”
A groan alerted Chloe that Spencer and Rick were coming to. She jumped from the platform, landing gently on her feet in front of the grunting men. She spoke when they were both looking at her, preventing either of them from speaking.
“Rick didn’t know about you, Spencer, but he would have found you if he had. Salacia was unable to find you and tell you about Spencer, Rick, but Caspian kept her on a short leash after her brief time away from him. Spencer was cursed because of being your son by one of Caspian’s friends and is now a demon learning to cope with being a little different. Love each other and appreciate the time you will have together in the future, not what you have lost in the past. Just remember that you have each other and Naida. Some of us aren’t lucky enough to have even one parent.”
Neither of the guys spoke as Chloe walked away. They looked between each other and let out a collective sigh, shrugging their shoulders in a manner that was eerily identical in the two, though they had never met before today. “She’s right, Spencer. We should appreciate our time now. I’m willing to be a father to you like I was unable to be when you were younger. Naida as well, if she will have me.”
“She will have you. She once told me, right after I was told that Caspian wasn’t my father, that you were the closest thing to a real dad she had ever had. She never cared for her real father, but told everyone that you were her father. She would love to know that you want her as much as she wants you. As much as I want you … Dad.”
Rick smiled and leaned over, giving Spencer a hug. At first, Spencer seemed stiff, but he sighed and wrapped his arms around his father, savoring the smell of the man’s aftershave and knowing that he would have plenty of opportunities to breathe in that scent in the future.
A small cough came from behind Spencer and the two guys pulled apart, smiling up at Naida as she shyly looked down at her hands. “I didn’t mean to interrupt, I just, um …” She wrung her hands for a moment and shook her head, speaking softly. “There are too many people in here, Spence.”
Spencer sighed and held his hand out to Naida. She took it and he pulled her into his lap, hugging her to him. “It’s alright, Nay. I’m here for you.”
“I am too, Naida. Spencer and I have agreed to leave the past behind us and move up with our future as a family.” Naida tensed and moved as if she was trying to get away from Rick, but he stopped her with a hand on her arm. “By our future as a family, Nay, I mean mine, Spencer’s, and yours. I would love to be a father to you as well, if you want me.”
Naida didn’t know what to say. She felt the tears come to her eyes and just nodded. She felt Rick’s arms go around her and sunk into the warmth of her brother and new father’s arms. He had always been like she had prayed Caspian would be, but now she had Rick Smith, and she wasn’t about to let him go.
She laughed and shook her head, pulling away from the two. “What do I call you though?”
“What do you want to call me?”
“Papa.” Naida spoke tentatively, like she was afraid he would tell her no.
Rick merely smiled and shrugged. “Papa it is then.”
Chloe stood in the shadows near the trio and smiled. She had wanted it this way, but she couldn’t help feel a stab of jealousy. Her father had been taken away from her when she was young. Her uncle Frank, who had been like a father to her, had been taken from her as well. She had Nia and Alex, and to a smaller extent her uncle Ray, but he had never been there a great deal when she was growing up. She had lost all the father heads in her life and was very much afraid of losing anyone else.
She shook her head and turned to move to the podium when she found arms around her waist. She breathed in the heavy scent of sulfur and cologne, leaning back into Spencer’s arms. “Thank you, Chloe, for helping us. I think we would have fought until we came up with that solution. I love you.”
“I love you too, Spencer.” Chloe turned in Spencer’s arms and kissed him gently, hugging him around the neck. She pulled back and smiled. “Go take care of Naida before she flips. I’m going to get ready to make the announcement.”
Spencer nodded and moved back to Naida, but someone had made it there before him. Chloe saw the flash of anger go across his face, but it was gone just as quickly as it had come. “Why is the Slayer touching my sister?”
Chloe shrugged. “Not something you need to be asking me, Spencer. She’s a big girl and can do what she wants. And it seems to me that she wants … Jon.”
Spencer grumbled under his breath and headed off into the other direction as Naida was pulled into Jon’s arms. She didn’t object, but instead wrapped her arms around his waist, laying her head on his shoulder. It was a pleasant sight and Chloe couldn’t help but notice the smile on Bill’s face, as well as Ryan’s and numerous others.
It seemed to Chloe that Spencer might be overreacting a little, but there would be time to think about that later. She had other things to tend to than his hurt feelings, though she did want greatly to console him.
She climbed onto the platform again and took the microphone that was offered to her. She turned it on and breathed into it, hearing her voice echo throughout the entire room. “Listen up, everyone!”
Silence fell on the room so still that Chloe would have thought she was in a morgue. She looked down at Bill and he shrugged, obviously sensing that utterly dead silence. “So, um …” She took a deep breath and steadied herself, throwing her abilities out to find the heartbeats and steady breathing of everyone in the room. “I’ve called you all here to let you know that a very powerful Master is coming our way.”
The silence was broken by cries of disbelief and horror. Chloe raised her hands in the air, but everyone continued to talk. A voice came from behind Chloe, clear as a bell, and spoke simple words, but there was something about them that drew everyone to listen. “Everyone be still. You must continue to hear Chloe out.” Chloe turned and smiled at Naida, glad that they had someone who could elicit calm amongst them, they were all going to need it by the end of this.
Chloe looked at the now calm crowd and sighed. “Jon Walker, the last of the great Slayer family, has seen the Master with his own eyes. He’s less than a day away. I’ve asked you all here because you are the best of the best shooters. We need your skills to help us kill the Master and his army. I need to know that all of you are willing to go out there with us. I will give no guarantee that you will live, so this must be your choice. Choose well.”
Again, the silence was thick and deadly. Chloe felt like they were about to turn into an angry mob and rip her to shreds. She was shocked, however, by the voice of a gruff old man in the back of the crowd. “Spoken like yer mother, Ms. Bryar. I’ll follow ye to the depths of Hell, as I did her, because ye have a heart that deserves to be followed.”
A chorus of cheers went out from the crowd and soon everyone was wanting to get loaded with weapons and out into the streets to protect. Chloe had never had so many people believe in her. As she had everyone file into the other room to get their weapons, she was hoping she wouldn’t disappoint.
