Johnny and Sid sat on a dirty mattress in the middle of a half empty room unable to sleep. Tomorrow they, and the rest of the Pistols, would leave for America. Tonight they were wired from excitement.
“Where do we go first?” Sid asked for what seemed the hundredth time
“I told ya,” Johnny said a little annoyed. “Atlantya or something like that. Cowboy country.”
“Yes. Yes Cowboy country,” Sidney said all excited.
Actually he was as much a prisoner in Johnny’s room as a guest. The others were purposely keeping Nancy, Sid’s pathetic girlfriend, occupied so that she would not know until it was too late that the band had left without her for the states. Johnny felt no guilt about tricking Sid, who thought Nancy was off scoring drugs for their trip. Sidney was going downhill fast and that bird was holding him under not letting him catch his breath. At first Johnny had actually been glad they got together. After all Sidney’s ego or shyness, Johnny was unsure which, had prevented him from having any real girlfriends. Plus Nancy just wouldn’t leave him alone.
Nancy came into all of their lives when Johnny still lived with Linda. She was bad news right form the start. Drugged up, whiney, bitchy, obnoxious. Everything Johnny could possibly loath in a person came wrapped up in this NY Doll and he wanted no part of it. Not that she didn’t try. If Johnny sat on the couch she sat next to him. If he slept, she slept next to him. If he told her to fuck off she whined “Whaaaaat Doncha like girls Johnnnnyyyy?” Eventually he introduced her to Sid to get her off of his back. Big mistake. Now Sid spent his days tagging along next to Nancy and letting her take more and more of his life over. Worse he was getting more and more into heroin. Johnny had tried it himself when the group toured around with the Heartbreakers. It made him sick as hell and he decided there and then it was too dangerous a drug to fool around with. It was a lesson Sid seemed incapable of learning.
“Do you think we will really see cowboys?” Sid asked bouncing on the mattress.
“Knock it the fuck off. Ya know me stomach ain’t great.”
“Oh right, sorry Johnny. So do ya?”
“Wha?”
“Think we’ll see actual cowboys?”
“Probably. I mean I think the south of the country is just lousy with cowboys. Maybe we’ll even see a real life shoot out.”
“Yeah,” Sidney said completely getting into the fantasy. He made his finger like a gun and shot at Johnny. “Bang! Bang!’
Johnny clutched his chest and rolled onto the floor.
“Ya got me. This is it. The big one,” he died a loud and dramatic death as Sidney felt apart laughing. It felt like old times. Before the band. Before fucking Nancy. Before everything started to change and get away from him. Not that some of the past few years hadn’t been fun. It was just that everything seemed to be racing ahead and he feared getting left behind in the process.
“Hey. Where did ya go last night after the pub crawl?” Sidney asked.
“Why? Don’t remember,” Johnny spoke up a little too quickly. He recovered from his death and stood up. Actually he had left unnoticed with Rammy. The very thought made him blush. He turned towards the stack of records in the corner of the room to hide his redness from Sidney.
Sidney barreled on, unaware of Johnny’s discomfort at the question.
“Ya know my mate Simon was there right,”
“Yes, Sid A Ney. I was there for most of the night.”
“Oh yeah. Well anyway when we got back Simon was out of his mind yelling about the end of the world and how we were all going to eventually die. He was getting on our nerves so we stripped him and threw him in the street.’
Johnny laughed out loud, “serves him right. Stupid morbid fucker.”
“Yeah. I went to look for you but I didn’t see you and then I ran into Nancy so I went with her to Lindas”
Johnny’s heart did a flip. Imagine if Sidney had found him. The image played in his head. Rammy pounding him hard. Him taking it and moaning for more.” He blushed harder and squated down to flick through the albums for no reason other than to have something to do.
“Anyway you would have had a laugh. Missed out. Bet where ever you went wasn’t as much fun.”
“mmm,” Johnny said not turning around. “So are you going to get a cowboy hat?” he asked Sidney sighing from relief as Sidney launched into another round of cowboy questions and left night’s activities forgotten into the past.

Connie bit hungrily into her burger. She had not realized she was so hungry until the food came. Rambo watched her delighted that she was not one of those birds that ate only salads. He scooped up a French fry and dunked it into the tiny bowl of dark red ketchup that rested on his white plate.
Connie finished her bite and washed it down with a few sips of cola. The ice and bubbles sizzled at her as she sipped down the dark liquid and then replaced the glass onto the table.
“So, before. About the rock bands from the past. I didn’t mean anything by it if those were people you know. I only know what I have heard or read about those years. “
“Oh that’s okay,” Rambo said. “They were confusing times I guess but fun. People sometimes remember them as far betta or far worse than they were. I mean we were all just kids anyway. What did we know?”
“You know that is interesting,” she said looking him in the eyes. Her eyes were a lovely medium green.
“I look at pictures from when I was in my early twenties and I look like such a kid compared to you guys. You were a tougher crowd I think.”
“Probably. Not that we wanted to be. Just had to be. The times demanded it.”
“Yes. I sometimes think that because I was brought up with most of the things I want I lack the internal drive to get a life.”
Rambo laughed a small laugh.
“Well I don’t know. Many people I know from them days don’t have much of a life either. Just sitting around talking about the old days or complaining about the present day.”
“Does you client do that?”
“Nah. I mean we reminisce sure but not like that. Not so much that we are stuck in the past.”
She giggled a little. “You sound like you are almost a couple. Talking about we do this or we don’t do that.”
“Do I?” he smiled and thought about the plain wedding band he had stashed in his suitcase upstairs. “Nah nothing like that. Just spend so much bleedin time around someone you start to think as a we not an I.” Rambo knew it was a lie but there was no reason to get into all of that with her. Not yet anyway.
She sensed she may have overstepped a little and pulled back into a new direction.
“I thought, if you want, maybe we could take a walk after dinner. It’s nice out and I always like to watch the boats down the street when I come here.”
“Sure,” he said happy they had changed topic. “That sounds nice.”
The dug back into their meals letting the clattering of silverware take up the spaces of silence between them.

Rammy walked at a quick pace down the sidewalk. He was set to meet up with his football gang in less than an hour but he had one more stop to make first. Since Johnny had left for America he thought he would take it upon himself to check up on his house at Gunter Grove. Funny that even when Johnny got a place they never went there together for any “secret” reason. To risky really. So many people just came freely in and out of the place. It was the main reason Rammy planned on watching over it while Johnny was gone. He made it to the house and opened the front door. As he suspect, it was not lock. What he had not expected was that Johnny had already made plans for a house sitter.
Nora was stretched out on the living room couch watching one of those dreadful daytime serials. She smiled weakly as Rammy entered the room.
“Hi,” Rammy said feeling uncomfortable.
“Hi,” Nora answered back
“Um, yeah. Sorry didn’t mean to bother you. Just checking up and making sure the place is okay while Johnny is away.”
“Dat is nice of you.”
“Well you look after your mates.”
“Mmm,” she said her weak smile changing to a tiny smirk
“But no need. I am here now. I will watch over the place.” Nora explained.
“Oh your staying here while Johnny is away?”
“Moved in. Johnny asked me too. I gave up my apartment so I stay here.” Nora continued wearing her small smirk.
“Have you heard from Johnny?” Rambo asked hoping he did not have to much interest in his voice.
“I hear from him almost everyday. He does not call you?”
“I don’t really have a phone,” Rambo explained not sure he liked the tone of her questions.
“He is sick. Head cold. The places are rough but he said Sidney has been okay. They are so close he and Sidney. Don’t you think?”
“I guess. I think Sidney is closer to Nancy actually.”
“I don’t like her.”
“Me either. Actually I don’t think anyone but Sidney does.”
“But I guess you and Johnny are closer?” her smirk grew a little.
“We have been friends a long time sure.”
“You seemed closer than that before Sweden. In my room”
Rambo blushed a deep red. He did not realize anyone had seen them. So that was why her questions were so pointed.
“I am not sure what you thought you saw but Johnny and I are simply friends.”
“Doesn’t matter,” she said off-handily. “Johnny said himself it was nothing. No fucking just messing around. Besides I could see that I do that better for him.”
“Really?”
“Yes. So he will get tired of you soon.”
“I see. Well,” now it was Rammy’s turn to smirk. “I am sure you do perform better. I mean you have had so much practice…been with so many, many, many more men.”
She sat up with anger in her eyes. “Fuck you.”
“No thanks.”
“Oh I forgot. You like zee boys.”
“No I don’t”
“Oh so you suck dick but do not like boys?”
“I like Johnny.”
“He has me. He doesn’t need you.”
“A lot of people have had you, what make Johnny so special?”
She looked like she wanted to slap him but remained sitting on the couch.
“You are just silly boy. Johnny could never be serious about you.”
“Did he say that?”
“He say a few weeks ago that he was not going to be seeing you like that anymore anyway.”
“Really? Well that was not the impression he gave me the other night.”
“What night?”
“Aww what ze matter? He not tell you?” Rambo mocked her accent as he spoke.
“See you just silly boy. I know something you don’t know. Pah silly boy.”
“I am not,” he said pulling himself to his full, if still short, height “a boy. I am a man. And after the other night honey? Johnny is definitely no boy either.”
With that Rambo turned and left the house leaving Nora behind hurling German swears at him from behind.
