"At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
'Cause I don't want to leave the comfort of this place
'Cause there's a hunger, a longing to escape
From the life I live when I'm awake."

Kelly yawned as she continued to hold Carrie close to her. She hadn't been able to sleep at all, being too worried about the girl in her arms. Fortunately though, Carrie had finally managed to fall asleep. And from what Kelly could tell, her fever had lowered some, and the chills had considerably subsided. She could feel the sun pouring in through the window behind her, warming her back as Carrie started to wake up.
Carrie brought a hand up, rubbing her eyes cutely as she stretched in Kelly's arms.
"Hey you," Kelly smiled as Carrie opened her eyes, gazing at her. She just smiled back lazily in reply.
"Feeling better?" Kelly asked, brushing her hair out of her eyes.
"Yea," she replied, softly.
"You had me really worried."
"Sorry."
"It's ok," Kelly assured her.
"Thanks for taking care of me, and you know...staying with me," she said, blushing slightly.
"It's fine," Kelly laughed. "I'm just glad you're ok."
Carrie smiled.
"How bout I fix you something to eat?"
"I'm not hungry," she mumbled.
"Please? You need to eat something."
Carrie frowned at her.
"Why don't you go take a nice cool shower while I fix you some pancakes? That way maybe by the time you're done in the bathroom, you might be hungry."
"Can we just lay here for a couple more minutes first?"
"If you promise to eat something."
"Ok," she nodded, with a soft smile as she wrapped her arms tighter around Kelly, resting her head on her shoulder. Kelly did the same, hugging her close as she took a relaxing breath for the first time since she had woken up on the couch.

"Breakfast is served," Kelly smiled, placing a plate of pancakes in front of Carrie as she sat at the counter.
"It's eleven," Carrie pointed out.
"Ok, then lunch is served," she laughed, fixing her own plate and sitting beside the country singer. "You're looking a lot better."
"The shower helped."
"See? I know what I'm doing," Kelly smiled, watching as Carrie took a bite of food.
"Wow. These are good," Carrie grinned.
"Thanks," Kelly replied, taking a bite of her own.
"I didn't know you could cook."
"Only breakfast, cause that's more baking than cooking."
"So you bake?"
"Yea," she nodded. "That I can do."
"Your mom taught you?"
"Um, no. I was by myself at home a lot, and I have a major sweet tooth, so I just started experimenting in the kitchen," Kelly explained.
"So your mom wasn't around?"
"You really are feeling better," Kelly laughed.
"Huh?"
"You're back in question mode."
"Oh, I'm sorry," she quickly apologized. "I don't realize when I'm doing it."
"It's fine," she shrugged. "Besides you can tell a lot about a person from the questions they choose to ask."
"Really?"
"Yea, for instance, the majority of your questions have been about my family which means that you think family is very important, right?"
"Yea," Carrie nodded, impressed.
"And to answer your question, it's not that she wasn't around in the sense I think you meant. She just worked a lot. She was a teacher, and a lot of times she would stay after school to tutor or something to make a little extra money. You know, single parent, times were kinda hard."
"What she teach?"
"Elementary school."
"She liked it?"
"She loved it," she smiled. "And from what everybody said, she was pretty amazing at it."
"You seem to really care about her."
"She's my mom," she shrugged. "You know, going through the whole broken family thing, growing up, she was the one constant in my life. I knew I could always count on her. She went to all my recitals, and she did her best to support me in any way she could."
"My mom was a teacher too," Carrie commented.
"Oh yea?"
"Yea, she really liked it. It definitely made me respect all my teacher's more for it because I saw all the work she had to put in."
"I respected my teacher's by sleeping through my classes."
"How is that respecting them?" Carrie laughed.
"If I was asleep, that meant I wasn't talking and interrupting them," Kelly pointed out.
"Talking is definitely something you're good at," Carrie agreed.
"I know. There should be like some sort of award for that."
"You would definitely win," she nodded.
"What about your dad?" Kelly asked. "I mean, well, sorry, I don't even know if they're together or anything."
"It's fine," Carrie smiled. "They are."
"That's such a hard thing to ask, you know? Cause I mean, the majority of the time they aren't, and it's usually a bad thing to bring up, so it's just weird, so you never know if you should bring it up, until it's too late--"
"You would definitely get the award for talking," Carrie said, looking at her in awe.
"Sorry," she blushed.
"But yea, they're still together. Stephen, that's my dad's name, he worked at the paper mill, and then we also lived on a farm which he keeps up."
"Stephen's my real father's name," Kelly replied.
"Wow. Looks like we have more in common than I originally thought."
"Except for the fact that your dad seems to be a great, hard working guy, and mine, well..."
"One of those bad things to bring up?" Carrie asked with the kindest of looks in her eyes that just melted Kelly's heart.
"Um, it's better now."
"Good," Carrie nodded, picking up both of their plates and carrying them to the sink.
"So what do you have going on today?"
"Absolutely nothing," Carrie grinned. "You?"
"Recording," Kelly said excitedly.
"You need a ride?"
"Well, I wasn't planning on walking, so..." she smiled.
