Frank’s POV.
After Gerard pouring milk all over me, I had no choice but to go and have a shower. He was still snickering at my appearance as I stuck my tongue out at him and dodged for the stairs.
It was amazing really, how much he’d changed just over a few weeks time.
I shook my head to clear it from thoughts as I stripped in the bathroom, eager to wash my hair. After pulling off my soaked t-shirt I had to giggle as some coco-pops fell from my hair. I ran a hand through it and tons more came off, flying to the tiled floor. I realised I would have to clean them up after my shower so I stopped ruffling my hair.
I stretched out and turned the shower on before stepping in, squealing at the coldness of the water, but being too impatient to wait for it to warm up. A million thoughts ran through my head as I showered. Thoughts about my life, about the things going on.
I know that summer will soon be over, and I haven’t applied to any schools yet, so it’ll be work for me. I hate working!
Narrator’s POV.
What Frank didn’t know, was that while he was in the shower a sad boy sat with his back against the outside of the bathroom door, trying to make sense of the feelings he had.
Gerard rocked where he sat, and his hands were fisted in his hair. He cried silently, because he didn’t want Mikey to hear him downstairs. When Frank left to shower, a wave of emotion washed over Gerard, and it scared him. He didn’t know what it was, and he had never felt anything like it before.
He tried to put a word to it, but he couldn’t, simply because he never knew emotions like them could exist.
“Go away, please.” The crying boy said to the feelings, but they didn’t listen of course. Feelings like those never do. “Leave me alone.” He tried again, but there was only silence, except for the running water in the bathroom.
All his life, Gerard lived with knowing he was different. Knowing that he wasn’t like everyone else, and that he never would be. He had grown up, always having his brother or his mother by his side, helping him with everything. They had done everything in their power, to make Gerard feel as normal as possible.
However, they had never talked to Gerard about love. Not love with girls, and definitely not love with boys. All Gerard knew about love was what he had seen in movies, and what he had read in books. Cameron used to (before taking advantage of Gerard) show him porno movies, so he knew what he had seen in those.
But those were just stories, they weren’t real, it doesn’t happen like that in real life. There’s no music playing as you realise you’re in love with someone. There’s no funny sarcastic comment, there’s no flowers falling from the sky. To Gerard, there’s no happy ending.
Knowing he was different, let Gerard know he was always bound to be alone. He was sad, but he accepted it, some days. Some days it made him angry, seeing people in love, seeing families smiling together. But most of the time, Gerard knew he would never experience all the feelings that people in movies do.
So Gerard didn’t know much, but he knew enough to make him worried. He almost knew, what the butterflies in his stomach meant, every time Frank smiled at him. But how could he be sure, when he had never felt anything like it?
It terrified Gerard to death, because he didn’t know what to do about it.
Finally, as he heard the shower being turned off, Gerard got up slowly and walked back into his room. He decided that he was going to talk to Mikey, because his brother had never let him down before.
Mikey’s POV.
“Lets have a water fight.” Frank suggested suddenly, and my face lit up instantly. As it was an extremely hot day, again we had taken up a spot on the lawn in our backyard, trying to get some sun. But again we found ourselves being bored out of our mind, and not even Gerard was entertained by the game of ‘I spy’ we tried playing.
“Yes, yes, yes, yes!” Gerard squealed and bounced up from his position on the blanket. “I need swimming trunks, and you too, and then WATER!” He shouted and hopped up and down.
Frank and I got up as well, and laughed at my brother’s enthusiasm. He was sent into the house by Frank to get changed, and we followed soon after. Of course Gerard was ready first since he practically flew up the stairs.
Only ten minutes later we had parted ways in the garden, aimed with water guns, ready to start the fight. We were all wearing only t-shirts and board shorts. Frank looked funniest in a pair of Gerard’s shorts, since Frank didn’t have any. They kept slipping down his hips, so he had to pull them up every few minutes, but he looked happy anyway.
“Okay, so this is-” And then my announcement was cut short by Gerard spraying water all over me. I shrieked from the cold, but laughed at the same time, which of course caused me to start coughing.
“FIGHT ON!” Frank yelled simply and I realised there was no way they were going to stop and listen to me listing the rules now. So I simply took a better grip on the water gun in my hands and started chasing after a hysterical Frank.
“It’s not fair!” Frank shouted, dripping wet. “There’s two of you against me.” He whined but Gerard and I just laughed and kept on running after him. The fight had been on for almost an hour, and it had been a long time since I had that much fun.
Of course fun ended for me as mum called that someone was on the phone for me, so I turned to the still laughing Gerard and Frank.
“You two children, don’t do anything really stupid while I’m on the phone, alright?” I said and Frank gave his ‘yes sir’ answer and then started spraying my brother with water again.
I rolled my eyes as I grabbed a towel from one of the garden chairs and walked towards the house. I tried wiping of as much water as I could before going inside, knowing my mum didn’t want to clean up after me.
