AN: I really am awfully sorry I haven’t posted in like, three billion years. I’m really anxious about this whole college thing. I have a competency exam coming up, and if I don’t pass, I fail the class, and if I fail the class, I lose my scholarship. Yeah. Stupid math.
They said their goodbyes after some fresh baked chocolate cookies and more milk. Dimitra had limited her son to two, and Cassandra had to giggle when he sulked over it. She did, however, allow Cass to have as many as she could swallow.
“All right, children.” Dimitra sighed when Criss said that it was time for them to go, he had a few more things to show his assistant that day.
“Don’t work too hard, and make sure you eat right. You hear me, Christopher?” she shook her finger in his face.
“Yes, Mom.” He sighed. Cassandra had the grace to swallow her giggles.
“It was really nice to meet you. You’re a wonderful cook, and I had a very good time. Thank you for having me.” The girl shyly said to the woman when it came time to leave. To her surprise, Dimitra gave her a big hug.
“Don’t let Christopher get to you.” She whispered. “His bark is much worse than his bite. Besides, he likes you, or he wouldn’t have hired you.”
There was something comforting in that hug, something that made Cassandra want to cry. She returned the embrace, pressing her face briefly into Dimitra’s shoulder. The woman’s hand cupped the back of her head, the tips of her fingers rubbing into her scalp.
It was a maternal embrace. Something that she hadn’t even realized she missed. It was all she could do not to burst out bawling right there. Reluctantly, Cassandra let go and smiled. The older woman caught her chin and looked at her carefully, wordlessly, before nodding for them to leave.
“Drive carefully!” Criss rolled his eyes as he waved a hand over his shoulder to his mother, who remained standing on the porch to see them off. Cassandra slid into the passenger seat, stuffed and thoughtful.
Her boss seemed to allow her the silence for a few minutes while he turned off the street. He looked to her then for a few seconds before turning back to the road.
“Do you want to tell me what that was all about?”
“What was what all about?” Cassandra snapped out of her thoughts. Subconsciously, she slipped closer to the door, holding onto the handle. It was almost like she was getting ready to leap out of the car and hit the pavement running.
“Avoiding discussing your family.”
“They’re not people I like to talk about. That’s my right, you know.” She snapped defensively. It was the first thing that popped into her brain. If she acted like they were horrible people, maybe Criss wouldn’t realize just how horrible she was for doing what she did.
Neither spoke for a few minutes. Cassandra breathed a sigh of relief. Perhaps this was one of those issues he was going to let go. Maybe they never had to discuss it, ever again.
That was stupid, and she knew it. Since when did he ever let things go? Granted, she had only known him a few days, but he didn’t strike her as the type to be willing to drop a subject. No, he’d think about it a for a few days, he’d watch her, and just when she thought it was safe, he would pounce, hoping to catch her off guard.
When you thought about it, Criss was just like a kitty. And kitty smelled a mouse.
“You still haven’t given me your number.” He piped up suddenly. Cassandra sucked in her breath.
“I decided not to have a phone installed until I buy a computer for the Internet.” She lied smoothly. Honestly, she did terrify herself. Every time she lied, it got a little easier, but every time, it seemed to hurt a little bit more.
“How about a cell phone?”
“I don’t know what service is good out here. I’ve been really preoccupied getting a place and a job.” And that WAS the truth. She had had to find a place to park her car, and then she really did look for a job.
“You can’t not have a way for me to reach you, Cass.” He sighed. He looked at her. “You don’t have a cell phone that you were using before you came out here?”
“It—broke on the trip.” Once again, sort of true. These half truths were getting sticky.
“I see.” There was another brief pause. He knew there was something she wasn’t telling him. Cassandra bit down on her lower lip. Happily, he reached over and switched on the radio, a clear sign that he was done talking to her. They pulled into the hotel once more, and Criss made it a point to walk ahead of her without looking back to make sure she was following.
