Die was leaning back against the car, long legs stretched out in front of him, hands shoved in his denim pockets, and head turned so he could watch something that I couldn’t see from my viewpoint. I let my gaze take in his long and lean physique, the handsome profile, and the way his dark red and black hair fell to nearly his shoulders. This man said he loved me. This man said he’d loved me for eleven years. This man wanted me to love him.
Could I? I hadn’t wanted to admit that he’d been right about there being something between us. It was why my heart sped up and my body melted when he kissed me. It was why I’d been… upset when I’d found out he’d slept with Hidaka-kun. I was about to call out to him when I saw his lips twitch, and then a full-blown smile lit his profile. My voice caught in my throat, and I wondered what he was looking at that could bring that softness to him? Moving forward I halted near him, and saw he was watching a very small girl, toddling about with a flower in one hand, occasionally sniffing it and missing a step so she had to catch her balance again. I stared at her, startled that Die would even notice her.
“She’s too young for you,” I teased, smiling when she stopped and glanced up at us. There were a few dirt smudges on her face, but she smiled brightly back.
Die blinked, and before even looking at me he slid an arm around my waist, fitting me against one of his legs. “I can see you chasing after a little one like that. You’d be wearing a pretty yellow dress, and you’d be barefoot, playing with our child in the grass.” Finally he tore his eyes away and stared into mine. “You look beautiful.”
I arched a brow. “You haven’t even looked at what I’m wearing.”
“I don’t need to,” he replied, still gazing into my eyes. “You’re always beautiful no matter what you wear.”
The words, and his gaze, were like liquid heat surging through me, and making me melt until I leaned into him. “Liar,” I breathed near his lips.
His arm tightened around me. “Kiss me,” he ordered softly.
He was back to that again? “Die…”
“You know you want to,” he enticed. Our lips were almost touching. He was waiting for me to lean in that last little bit, to reach up slightly, and be the first to kiss him like he’d been demanding for a while now.
Die’s cell rang, and he ignored the first two rings, but then cursed softly and let me go. Looking at it he sighed, flipped it open, and put it to his ear. “What, Totchi?”
Startled, I turned, glancing back at the house. Had Toshiya been watching us? Why was he calling? That’s when I remembered the conversation last night about a kiss taking all your reasoning and shoving it down to your private area. I swung back to Die who was listening, one brow arched. Not wanting Die to get any ideas, I went up to him, took the cell, and flipped it shut as I did what I had told myself I wouldn’t do; I planted my lips determinedly upon his in a long warm kiss. It worked. Totally forgetting about his phone, Die’s hands curled around my hips and drew me closer to his body. I knew it was time to retreat when his lips started to part, and I felt the tip of his tongue begin to reach out.
Die was unprepared for the sudden movement I made to step out of his arms. He reached for me. “Wait,” he whispered, eyes heavy lidded and a flush on his face. “Don’t leave so soon.”
I held up a hand, holding him back. I well remembered how devastating Die could be when he wanted, and he wanted to be just that when he was kissing me. “I do believe the kiss comes at the end of the date, Die-san.” I headed for the passenger door.
I gasped to feel his hand cover min on the door handle, his body so close it was just touching my back, but not pressing into me to intimidate. He leaned forward to open the door, and this brought his lips near my ear, his breath hot and a little unsteady. “You should have remembered that before you planted that whopper on me seconds ago.”
I was trying to appear unaffected, a feat that wasn’t quite so easily done. “So… are you saying that my kiss makes all your reasoning drop to your… umm…”
A very low chuckle rumbled from him and against my ear. “Just looking at you makes all my reasoning drop to my… umm…”
I trembled at that, and blushed so badly my body felt overheated. I wanted to hurry into the car to move away from him, but he was so close behind me that I couldn’t move without rubbing against him, and I didn’t really want to feel if all of his reasoning had dropped. “Die-san…”
“I have to wonder, though, why you suddenly kissed me.”
Startled I turned slightly to look at him, and gasped slightly at just how near his face was to mine. “What…”
“You never kiss me without me starting it,” he stated. When I opened my mouth to speak he arched a mocking brow. “You’re not going to lie, are you?”
I flamed, feeling guilty. “I was going to say this date is never to start if we just stand here yakking all day.” Dammit, the man was just too irritatingly observant. He always had been. He’d always been able to know when I was hiding something, or lying to him, or…
“Whatever the reason is, I don’t care,” he admitted, dark gaze falling to my lips. “I’ll just pretend it’s because you can’t stop loving and wanting me.”
When I rolled my eyes it wasn’t faked. “God you’re conceited!”
A bright smile lit his face, putting a teasing glow in his eyes. “You like me that way.” He moved back, pulling the door open as he did so.
I could breathe again, but the air felt a little cool now without him so near. Clearing my throat and moistening my dry lips by licking them I got into the passenger seat, and buckled myself in. Die shut the door and went around, getting in behind the wheel. Along with his denims he wore a button-down white shirt, and light smokey-grey suit jacket, unbuttoned. Semi-casual. If needed he could throw on a tie and look dressed up enough for almost anywhere except black tie affairs. The way his hands lifted and his fingers curled around the steering wheel caught my attention. He had nice, broad strong hands. I knew they were lightly callused from hard work, the fingertips a little more so because he was a guitar player. I’d felt those calluses on my bare skin that day my towel had fallen and he’d kissed the daylights out of me.
Just remembering that made goose bumps rise on my arms, and a hot little thrill shoot up and down my spine. Even when I’d gotten away from him and run to my room to dress I’d been shaken enough to tremble and barely been able to do up my clothes. I’d been groped by dates before, and been nothing but disgusted and a little afraid, but when Die had touched me…
“By the way,” Die interrupted my thoughts by suddenly speaking. “Can I get my cell back? I’ll have to call Totchi back later.”
“Unless it’s an emergency no phone calls today,” I hurriedly told him. “I’ll keep your cell in my purse.” He let out a loud irritated sigh, but I knew I’d won. Good. When I got home tonight Toshiya was going to hear it from me!
………………
I was rather surprised by his choices for our date, but not unhappy about it. Die knew I’d missed Japan, and he took me on a tour to re-acquaint myself with it. Though we lived in a seaside town, our first stop was a sightseeing area atop a cliff where the broad expanse of ocean could be appreciated. The dark waters sparkled in the sunlight. Off to one side could be seen the shadowy outline of Mount Fuji. Though it was a constant threat to many lives it was still a thing to be revered and take pride in. While admiring the view I took cell photos, and let him have his to take some, even if he did include me in all of them. We even put our heads together and each took a cell photo of us together, comparing them to see who cut what part of someone’s head off in the process, and laughing at it.
Climbing back down the mountain, we walked through an open market. All the different smells of produce, raw meats, fish, spices and herbs, and baking or cooking blended in with the sea salt air. Die held my hand, and I didn’t object. It was natural to let him hold it. It was right to feel his big hand entwined with mine. Down a little side street he led me to a small place to eat. So small that there were only two tables outside under a canopy. We ate rice with sea grapes and urchin, and eel rice. Two flavours I had missed in the six years I’d been gone.
After lunch we drove elsewhere and explored small shops packed tight with goods of all kinds from tall shelves full of all kinds of souvenir-like gifts to bowls of candies and sweets or dried foods. Shops that specialized in cooking utensils you wouldn’t easily find outside of Asia, shops that featured yukatas in designs and colours only Asians could appreciate (or those who loved everything Asian), and shops full of books of which the majority were manga.
It was nearing dinnertime, and I had a few books in hand that I wanted to purchase. A few manga I’d gotten into when I was younger thanks to the fact I’d wanted to impress Toshiya by knowing about them, and a few I’d discovered on my own. I was heading for the cash when a bright red cover caught my eye. I paused and pulled the book out. WHAT MEN REALLY WANT IN BED. I flamed, and was hurriedly putting it back when I hesitated. I wasn’t totally ignorant about sex, but I wasn’t… very educated about it either. I hid it amongst my other books, and went to pay. The one good thing about Japan was the open-mindedness about sex. I didn’t get funny looks for buying a bunch of manga and a book about sex. I was done paying and was holding a pretty little bag with my purchases when Die neared. He had a few books, and I was startled to see they were novels except for a book of photos of Japan.
“Bowling?” I asked as he led me to a bowling alley. He flashed a non-repentant grin, and I had to smile.
I suck at bowling. I have bad aim. Die realized it gave him an excuse to get real close to teach me how to properly stand, hold the ball, and throw it. Unlike me, he was a great player. I tried shooting questions at him to get him off his game, but it didn’t work. I moved around to where the balls were and decided to improvise. I ‘dropped’ something, and had to bend over to pick it up, giving him a good view of my ass end in that short skirt. I heard the ball hit the lane with a louder thud than usual. When I straightened he’d only hit one far pin instead of getting a strike. He neared and reached for a ball, his eyes on me and one brow rising. I arched both brows in innocent confusion. I watched him get into position, draw his arm back, and just before he could let go of the ball I lifted my skirt slightly up one thigh and ‘adjusted’ my stocking. There was another louder than usual thud, and when I glanced up the ball he’d thrown was rolling down the gutter.
“Oh, I can do better than that!” I taunted, reaching for a ball. “Even without you teaching me!” He hadn’t moved, and I avoided his gaze, feeling my cheeks turn rosy. “Move it,” I ordered, bumping him aside, but his hands caught my hips, and he held me with my back flush to his front.
“Next time you lift your skirt, make sure we’re alone and you mean it,” he growled low near my ear. Releasing me he went to sit down, leaving me to play my turn. Only problem was, his words created images in my head that made me tremble and had me playing as badly as he had last time.
It was getting late when we left the bowling alley and made our way to where he’d parked. Die threw an arm over my shoulders, and chuckled. “Your blatant attempts to distract me…”
“Blatant attempts to…” I was going to pretend outraged innocence.
“Bending over to pick something up that you dropped was one thing, but lifting your skirt…”
I pulled away and walked backwards so I could face him. “My stocking was…” I’d bumped into someone, and I turned. Bowing I hurriedly apologized, and was trying to get around them when someone moved in front of me.
“Why the hurry?” an unfamiliar voice purred.
Die pulled me behind him, placing himself squarely and protectively between me and who he felt was a threat. “Sorry, friend, but the lady’s with me, and we’re going to be on our way now.”
“Maybe the lady would rather stay with us,” the voice replied, and there were three different kinds of snickering chuckles.
“I doubt it,” Die calmly stated. “Suji, reach into my right pocket and get the keys. Go get into the car.”
I peered around him, and saw four men. Two of them were about his size, one was smaller, and the other was bigger. I shook my head. “I can’t leave you here alone to…”
“I can’t handle this if I’m worried about you getting hurt so take the keys and get in the car. Lock the doors,” he ordered. “Now!”
I was going to give him a blast later for that demanding tone of his, but for now I slid my hand into his right front pocket, and pulled his keys out. “Die…” I whispered, actually afraid for him. He was alone to their four.
He nudged me gently. “I’ll be fine. Trust me.”
If there was one thing the boys were it was capable. I’d seen them get into some nasty fights, and walk away afterwards. They didn’t always win, but if they were losing they took down as many as they could on their own way down. The car was not very far off. Keys in hand I took a wide pass around them, and headed for the car. Thankfully my heels were not high so I could do a kind of jog since an outright run would be out of the question. Halfway there I turned to see how Die was doing, and saw he was busy with two of the men who had jumped him. The other two were running for me. With a cry I turned and ran, not caring that I was in heels. As I did so I got the car key ready, and when I reached the car was inserting it into the lock when solid weight crashed into me and pinned me to the car. My breath left me in one whoosh, and it took a few moments to be able to breathe again.
That’s when I felt the hand roughly tugging my skirt up. A hard thigh pressed into my legs, trying to part them while that hand now groped for underwear to yank them down. I screamed, horrified, trying to shift enough to get the keys free. If I could do that I could use them as a weapon. I clamped my thighs tightly together, and tried to stomp down on a foot. The weight was suddenly yanked from me, and I nearly slid down to the pavement when released. Keys in hand I turned to see a very enraged Die pummeling the face of my would-be rapist. The other one was about to help his friend, but I whipped the keys into his face. They hit with a satisfying crack. The guy howled, hands going up to his face.
Die grabbed my hand and shoved me into the passenger seat. Bending he picked the keys up as he kicked the one I’d hurt in the groin. The man went down. Rushing around the car he slid behind the wheel and revved the engine. We took off quickly, and he didn’t slow until we were well out of the city. He suddenly pulled to the side of the road, gripping the steering wheel tight. “Are you okay? Did they hurt you? Did they…”
“I’m fine,” I assured him. I saw his hands tighten, and I unbuckled myself so I could turn towards him and reach out to stroke his hands, trying to make him relax.
His jaw worked stiffly.
I moved closer to him. Had it not been for Die I’d have been raped. “I’m okay. You saved me.” I managed to loosen his hands from the wheel and I held one in mine. “Die…” He wouldn’t look at me so I cupped his face in my hands and made him turn towards me. The torment in his eyes was like a spear in the gut. I stroked his cheeks, moving closer, and very lightly kissed his lips.
“When I saw them…” He stopped himself, his eyes falling shut, and swallowed hard.
“I’m okay. You saved me,” I repeated, kissing him lightly again.
“I heard you scream, and I saw him… When I saw…” He couldn’t go on.
I couldn’t get closer without crawling into his lap, and I did so, straddling him. “I’m not hurt. Die, look at me.” He wouldn’t, so I tilted his face up, and kissed him longer. I needed to get closer to him. I needed to feel him hold me. I needed to feel him love me or I’d start to cry. I could still feel those hands on me, and it made me tremble. “You saved me,” I repeated.
“Suji…”
Grabbing his hand I drew it up the outside of my thigh, up beneath my skirt. “Daisuke…” I breathed at his lips, reaching my tongue out and tasting blood on his lips. I could feel the soft calluses on his hands scraping against my skin. “Touch me,” I urged him. His touch would erase the other’s. He was un-tensing, his other hand sliding up my other thigh, both rubbing from knee to nearly hip. He was kissing me back finally, and I sighed into his mouth. “Make me forget…” I pleaded softly.
For a moment he kissed me wildly, pulling me closer to him, but then broke the kiss. “No, Suji.”
“Die!” I was surprised when he held me back. Was this the same guy who’d been so heated and eager when I’d lost my towel? I reached for the bodice of my dress. “Die, I know you want me.”
“He caught my hands in his, halting me. “I do. But not here, not like this. Not for this reason.”
“What…”
“I won’t have sex with you to make you forget someone else,” he growled. “When it happens, it will be for all the right reasons. It will be for nothing more than because we love each other and want to.”
I was going to argue. I was going to press the issue, say he was wrong, but he wasn’t. I deflated and moved off him. “You’re right.”
“Suji…” he worriedly reached for my hand.
I smiled. “I’m okay. Really.” He stared at me a moment, and then nodded. In seconds we were back on the road towards home.
……………
A good ten minutes was spent arguing once we got home. He wanted me to stay at his place where they would all be there for me if needed. I wanted to go home. He then wanted to come with me, to protect me and be there for me. I didn’t think he’d understand or appreciate finding his brother at my place. In the end he made me swear to call him if I was scared or anything. I made sure the doors were locked, and headed upstairs. The higher I climbed the heavier of a weight I felt starting to drag me down. I struggled the last few steps, and paused in the hallway. I could feel the trembling starting. Deep, deep inside. Like a low rumbling that was growing in intensity.
“How as your date?” Toshiya asked when he saw me. I didn’t reply. I couldn’t. “Suji-chan?” he called to me.
“He… he tried to…” My teeth were chattering.
Toshiya leapt out of bed, and neared. “What the fuck did my brother try to do?”
I shook my head, hugging myself. “No. Die… Die saved…”
Toshiya stood before me, afraid to touch me. “Suji… what happened?” His cell rang, but he ignored it, and it soon stopped ringing. Carefully he put his hands on my shoulders. “I’ve never seen you like this before. What happened?”
A tear fell, and I swayed. “Nothing, I…”
His cell rang again. Toshiya cursed and hurried to get it. It was Kaoru. “What the hell do you…”
“I know where you are,” Kaoru interrupted. “Die came in and was in a fit. He and Suji-chan were leaving a bowling alley when they bumped into these four guys. Die told her to go to the car. Two jumped him, and two went after her. Totchi, they tried to rip her skirt up and rape her. He beat the shit outta them, but… she wouldn’t come here, and she wouldn’t let Die stay there. You’re the only one who can keep an eye on her. Saika’s in the city with Mama, or they’d both be over there.”
Toshiya cursed viciously. “No, it’s okay, I’ll keep an eye on her.”
“Die can’t know you’re there,” Kaoru suddenly stated. “I’ll do my best to keep him here.”
“I know.” Toshiya hung up and heard the shower going. He waited in the hall until I came out. For the first time I’d remembered to bring a change of clothes with me. I wore my Hello Kitty nightshirt. “How ‘bout I make you some tea…”
“I’m okay,” I whispered hoarsely. I’d cried in the shower. It had made me feel a little better, but I was still trembling.
“No, you’re not.” Toshiya’s hands rubbed my arms, and then reached for my hands. Mine were icy. He gently drew me closer and just held me. “I’m sorry this happened to you.”
“I’m just… I’m actually okay, but I can’t stop shaking.” Which was true. I felt a deep down kind of cold. “Toshiya?”
“Mmm?”
“Can I sleep with you? I mean, can you just… hold me tonight?” I asked in a small voice.
“Yeah, c’mon.” He tucked me inside the bed against the wall, and took the outside. His big body sliding in next to mine under the covers felt secure. Carefully he curled to my back, just holding me. For a while I trembled, but his heat dissipated the shakes, and soon I was relaxed. I hadn’t known I’d fallen asleep until a dream where I saw the men running for me made me jump awake. Toshiya shushed softly, stroking my hair.
I rolled over and buried my face in his neck. His warmth and his scent pushed the last scary dredges of the dream away, and I sighed as I drifted back to sleep.
