AN: Ero, the little boy I baby sat for ran around in his underwear a lot. I have no idea why. He also wore snow boots in July. I thought it was cute. His mother didn't. Once again, I have no idea why. Did you get your little boy dressed, lol? I do know what you mean about names. Seriously. Ugh. I used to really like Autumn, then met a not very nice girl with that name and didn't anymore, lol. Want some eyebleach because of those pictures?
Also, I used songs by Shakira and Cascada here. I don't own them, and make no money.
I packed the kids into the taxi. I sat in the middle to prevent any squabbling, and it’s more fun to sit next to a window when you’re a kid anyway. Jack swung his legs while Lily-Rose fished around in her purse.
We arrived in the theater, and I paid the cabbie, gathering the kids close to me. I paid for us to go and sit in the new Pixar film, and as a reward, I bought us popcorn and sodas. I knew that it was too much salt and way too much sugar, but I’d try and get us healthy lunch.
Jack finished his food early, and yawned. To my surprise, he turned and climbed into my lap to watch the movie. He wound his arms around my neck and rested his head against my chest; his eyes sleepily watching the cartoon dog try to find his way home.
I buried my head in his hair. There was something nice about having a child be so happy to be with me. It made me feel so wanted, so worthwhile. There was an ache deep inside of me. I knew that I was young, but I didn’t even have a boyfriend.
Years ago, I had told myself I didn’t want children. I didn’t want to be married. But now, I wasn’t so sure.
“Charity?” Lily-Rose was tugging on my jacket.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
“The movie’s over.” Well, so it was. The screen was black, and probably had been for a few minutes. I stood up, carefully so I wouldn’t overbalance with the little boy in my arms. I grabbed Lily-Rose’s hand and went outside to get a cab.

Johnny stood in his living room. He paced back and forth. He had arranged his bedroom, rearranged the dishes in the kitchen (he put the plastic cups on the bottom shelf, so Jack could reach them and wouldn’t risk breaking a glass), read the new script, called his agent, and done a load of laundry. (Only what he was sure he could correctly though. God help him if he ruined Lily-Rose’s favorite pink tutu.)
Now what? What else was there for him to do? He sat down on the couch for maybe thirty seconds, went and turned on his laptop, sat back down on the couch and sighed. This was enough to drive anyone insane.
He had to think of something to do. He reached to turn on the radio, thinking that music would help him think of something to do. A familiar song bopped on, and Johnny grinned.
“Oh baby, when you talk like that, you make a woman go mad…
So be wise, and be bold.
Reading the signs of my body.”
Instantly, his hips were moving, and he was dancing all around the room. Shakira had never had this effect on him before. Maybe he’d just never been in the right environment to really let himself loose and dance.
Johnny threw his arms into the air and let his hips roll, let his lips form the words of the song.

We sat in Subway. I was munching on a roast beef while the kids enjoyed their meatball subs. It was the healthiest thing I could find. Lily-Rose was so ladylike, wiping her mouth after ever bite, but Jack was indeed a boy, sauce smeared all over his face.
“Maman never lets us get Subway.” Lily-Rose said with a smile. “She said they weren’t real sandwiches.”
“Did she? We just won’t tell her when she comes then. It’ll be our secret.” I winked at the kids, and they giggled. Jack looked sad all of a sudden.
“What’s wrong, Jacky?”
“I miss Maman. I hope she comes soon.”
“I know you miss her, sweetheart.” I said sympathetically. “Did you know that I miss my mommy sometimes, too?”
“But you’re all grown up!” Lily-Rose blinked.
“Even grown ups feel that way too, sometimes.”
“I miss Maman, but I’m glad she and Daddy don’t fight so much anymore.” Jack said. I swallowed my bite and looked at him.
“All parents fight sometimes, Jacky.”
“Not like Maman and Daddy. They’d scream at each late at night when we were in bed.” Lily-Rose said. “They’d argue about each other. Maman said Daddy didn’t love her anymore, and he said he did, and then he left. And then we came here, a little while later.”
Oh God. Everything clicked. His wife wasn’t coming back. At least, not anytime soon. He’d been lying to me. Well, I guess I could understand that. His marriage wasn’t any of my business. I was the nanny, not his marriage counselor, and not his girlfriend.
“Did she say she was coming to meet you guys here?” I asked.
“Daddy did.” Jacky said.
Now I was confused. I’d have to talk to Johnny. Nothing was making sense. Or maybe I was just projecting my own thoughts on his relationship. Usually the mother kept the children, but maybe his wife couldn’t for whatever reason.
I’d just have to talk to him once we got back to the house. I told the kids to finish up their lunch so we could go to the park. I sipped on my bottled water and tried not to let myself get too worked up.

“Remember the feelings, remember the day.
My stone heart was breaking, my love ran away.
This moment I knew I would be someone else,
My love turned around and I feeeeeeell!
Be my bad boy, be my man,
Be my weekend lover, but don’t be my friend.
You can be my bad boy, but understand,
That I don’t need you again.”
Johnny was in the middle of the living room, holding a hairbrush to his mouth as he danced. He didn’t even hear the door opening, didn’t know that anybody was watching him until he opened his eyes and saw Charity and his kids.
“Daddy! Did you get into my CDs?” Lily-Rose demanded. He blushed. In fact, he had. After all, he didn’t listen to Cascada. But his daughter did listen to some nice dance music. He switched off the CD player.
“So you had a productive day.” Charity sent the kid upstairs to play before dinner as she went into the kitchen.
“Hey, I rearranged the dishes!” he said defensively. She gave him a quick smile then went quiet. There was a sinking feel in Johnny’s stomach. He knew something was up when a girl acted like this.
He watched her remove some chicken breasts from the fridge and put them in the sink.
“Your wife…”
“What about her?” he swallowed.
“She isn’t coming back, is she, Johnny?” there was a pause in the kitchen before he slowly shook his head. “I understand that you lied to me. It isn’t my business whether or not she comes back. I’m your employee, not your friend. But you can’t lie to your kids, Johnny.”
“How old are you again?” he snorted. Charity turned and narrowed her eyes. “Do you even have kids? Do you know what it’s like to try and explain something like this to them?”
“I know what it’s like to have a parent lie to me!” she snapped. Johnny stared at her for a minute before turning and storming out of the room. What did she know anyway?
