Chasing Destiny
Despite the few times that Sav and Joe had been together, Joe still basically ignored him, opting to spend his time with Nick. Nick had the patients of centuries while teaching him the finer points in chess and sword dueling. They would spend hours sitting on the bench of the baby grand piano that Nick bought playing together or watch each other. Nick helped him learn how to control the blood lust and his temper whenever it flared.
Sav had to endure the newfound closeness between them day after day. Watching them together laughing or in deep conversation about past history. It would anger him to the point of boiling whenever he caught them sharing a blood kiss. Sav had confronted Nick one evening to find out what he had done to Dusty. Nick simple told him that he had taken her to Tiny and doesn’t know what he did with her.
Sav’s outburst one day at walking in on them wrapped around each other, cost him several cuts and bruises from Nick. Joe didn’t do anything to stop Nick and turned his back on them and left the room. Sav later, as he cleaned himself up, gathered that Joe’s behavior about this incident was all part of his revenge.
Sav watched them enjoy an evening watching a soccer game on TV, until Nick took his leave, stating he had business in town. Joe was at the bar pouring himself more blood wine when Sav rose from his seat and approached him.
“He wants to fuck you.” Sav stated.
“Wow thanks, so blunt." Joe sarcastically replied. "How do you now that?”
“The way he looks at you all the time.”
“So.”
“You can’t sleep with him Joe.”
”Why not, you do?”
“That’s not you at all. You would never sleep with another man.”
”I slept with you didn’t I?”
”That was different.”
”How is it different Sav? It would only be sex, you said so yourself.”
“Not with Nick it won’t be. He’ll make it personal and more demanding each time.”
“He has you for that.” Joe smirked as he tilted his glass toward him, then moved toward the sofa.
“It will be a big mistake if you do.”
Stopping in his stride, Joe turned around and faced him again, ”No, the only mistake I made was trusting you.”
“You’re never going to let it go are you? I’ve tried everything I know of to make it up to you. Poured my feeling for you on the ground and you still can’t get over it after all these months. How much longer are you going to continue making me pay for it?”
”What was that you told me just before you took my life... forever.”
Sav looked at the floor and inhaled deeply. Glancing back up at him, he shook his head slightly. “Then I have nothing to live for.” With that, he turned and started towards his room.
“What… wait, what is that suppose to mean?” Joe called after him, he heard the door close softly and Sav shut him from his mind. Joe clearly heard the emotion in his voice when he said that and knew the way he had been treating Sav the past few months was hurting him. Joe waited for a while before he went to Sav’s room. Not bothering to knock, he gripped the knob and almost ran into the door. Sav had not only locked his mind away from him, but also from his room.
“Unlock the door.” Joe called out as he knocked softly. The minutes ticked by with no response. “I know you can hear me, now open the door.” he leaned his forehead on the cool wood. “Don’t make me kick it in.” the silence was almost deafening in the house as he continued to wait for any response from the other side of the door. “Sav please, we need to talk… I want… I want to try and work this out….please open the door.” A few minutes later, Joe heard the soft click as the lock was disengaged. Opening the door slowly, he stepped inside and looked around.
Several candles flickered, placed around the room to ward off the darkness, their soft glow cast eerie shadows on the walls. Moving further into the room, he eased down in the chair across from Sav. Joe reached out and picked up the drink that Sav had poured for them and took a healthy swallow, it burned down his throat, causing him to cough from the amount of liquor mixed with the blood.
“That’s a little to strong for me.”
Sav was leaning back in his chair regarding him with hooded eyes. Silence stretched between them as neither one knew what to say.
“Well.” Joe finally said breaking the silence. “This is a good start.”
“I don’t see how we have anything else to say to each other, that hasn’t already been said.”
“No, there is plenty more….”
“You’ve said your peace Joe.” Sav cut him off. Shifting in his chair, he brought his hand up and twirled a long silver cylinder around in his fingers.
“What’s that?” Joe asked.
Sav pulled it apart, revealing a hypodermic needle already filled with a red liquid. “This…” he started as he laid his arm across the table and positioned the sharp point at the crook of his arm. “…..has to be the best drug that they created for us.”
“What does it do?”
“They say it’s quick and painless, but I think I would rather feel the pain. That way it will remind me of what I did to you and carry it with me.”
“Where are you going?” Joe asked him. He didn’t like the way Sav was talking, his voice cold and flat, the look in his eyes devoid of any emotions. Joe glanced down at is arm, the needle was pressing into his skin, and his thumb was on the top of the plunger.
“I’m not even sure that he would want me there, considering what I’ve done.”
“Who?”
“Steve.” Sav told him just above a whisper.
Joe’s stomach fluttered with nerves.
“Nick will take care of you and the others. Just don’t give into any of his demands Joe; if you do you’ll never escape him. Just remember that I will always….always love you.”
“That stuff in the needle is going to kill you isn’t it?”
“It works too, I’ve seen it.”
“And you think this is the answer to everything?”
“To finally be free of Nick it is.”
“What about me Rick? Your going to sit there and tell me you love me, but are willing to kill yourself and leave me behind.”
"You’ll never have to be reminded of all the pain and hurt I put you through by tomorrow.”
“And you don’t think this will do the same.”
“You’ll get over it in time.”
”No I won’t. I can forgive you for what has happened in the past, all of it.” Joe told him quickly and looked at the needle again, it was pressed harder into his skin. “Don’t do this Rick. I don’t want you leave again, this time for good.” When Sav made no move to take the needle away from his arm Joe bolted from his chair towards him and went to grab his arm, only to see the needle plunge in. Joe stopped dead looking at it.
“No!” he screamed when he saw the twitch in his thumb to push the plunger. “Shit Sav…please you can’t….take it out.” Joe pleaded and locked his eyes with his. “Oh man….please…you…you can’t leave me again….Rick please.” Joe pleaded with him as his hand slowly moved toward the needle. “I want you stay with me forever, like you promised. I love you, please don’t do this.” Joe’s fingers closed around the needle and slowly pulled it away, he felt Sav enter his mind and Joe let him know of his feelings at wanting to stay with him. Sav released the needle and Joe snatched it away, pushing the plunger in to squirt the liquid onto the floor. Sav abruptly stood and went outside.
Joe took a deep breath and ran his hands through his hair try to calm his nerves. Dropping the needle on the floor, he crushed it under his foot and went to find him outside.
He was standing down on the beach, looking out over the ocean. Mindless of the falling rain, Joe went out to him and stood there a moment before he closed the distance between them. He snaked his arms around his waist and pulled him into a tight embrace. Joe rested his chin on Sav’s shoulder and thought about how their bodies molded together and how good it felt. Turning his head, he planted a light kiss on his neck and further up to his ear.
“Don’t scare me like that again.” Joe whispered. “What good is my life if you’re not there, it’s very lonely without you. It’s taken us a long time to get here and I want us to stay together forever Sav like it was meant to be.”
“So you for give me, for what I did?”
“Yes, it has taken time, but you should have known I would have. Don’t I always?”
”Yes, but…”
”No buts….I understand why you did it that way. I was there remember. I saw what Nick was doing to you every day.”
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“I know.” Joe said and kissed his neck again. Tracing his tongue in light circles on his sensitive neck, he let his fangs drop and scraped them on his soft skin. Sav turned in his arms and looked at him. Joe pulled him back against his chest, he bent his head back to his throat and eased his fangs into the rushing blood that awaited him.
Sav returned the blood kiss and heard Joe sigh with pleasure as he took him. Pulling away from each other, Sav kissed him softly on the lips and turned back around. Joe resumed his position behind him.
“I think that everyone has a destiny in their lives and I believe this is ours. To be together forever, to walk in darkness until the end of time. It’s funny how our lives turned out and then to reach this place and time. I don’t think I ever told you this, but it was there when we first met. That attraction for each other. Do you remember that day?”
”I’ll never forget it.” Sav replied. “The pull we had was very strong between us then, stronger now with our bond, it just took forever to get here.”
”And we have forever to stay there. This is our destiny Rick.”
“Yes it is.” Sav told him, turning his headed to plant a soft kiss on Joe’s cheek.
Settling against each other, their minds joining together to express their feelings for each other what their voices could not. Together they stared out at the turbulent ocean, mindless of the pouring rain, lost in each other.
