The bar outing got some people thinking :) And it's cool to read that it's not too soon that Ashley and Carrie are becoming friends for you guys.
Ch 12
Tommy closed the door behind him as he looked around for Carrie. “Care, I need your help picking an outfit for my date with Hector tonight.” He didn’t see or hear anything from the dining room or kitchen, so Tommy headed for the living room. They had returned to town the night before, so he expected Carrie to be sacked out on the couch, or on the phone. Tommy frowned when he didn’t find Carrie in the living room. He knew she was home, he had seen her car. He pulled out his cell phone and called his friend to make sure he wasn’t about to interrupt anything. Tommy could hear Carrie’s phone ringing, so Carrie was home for sure.
Carrie reluctantly stood and left the guest room so that she could answer her phone. She had woken up early and decided to try to choose which of her extra rooms she would turn into a place where she could write. “So much for having a free day to myself.” Carrie sighed and hurried to get to her phone before whoever calling hung up and tried her house phone. “What is it Tommy?” She was glad that it was Tommy. If it had been Matt calling, it would most likely be about something that would mean the end of her free time.
“Where are you? I’m in your living room, and you’re not. And where is Ace?” Tommy hadn’t realized that the dog was gone until he had begun to think of where Carrie could be if she had left her phone at home. He had thought that maybe she had taken Ace on a walk, and he just hadn’t seen her, but that thought had turned out to be wrong when Carrie had answered the phone.
Carrie chuckled that Tommy had actually called her phone to find her when they were both in the house. “I’m upstairs, dork. Ace is out in the backyard running around. Come on up.” She closed her phone and pocketed the device. Tommy would have been in a rush to explain why he was calling if there was some event she needed to go to quickly. Carrie walked back to the room she had decided on, and then sat back down on the floor in the middle of the room as she looked at the walls and thought about if she should paint the walls or leave them white.
Tommy jogged up the stairs; happy to know where his friend was and that Ace was okay. He checked Carrie’s room and was surprised to find the room empty, so he continued on to the first guest room. He smiled when he found Carrie sitting on the floor. Tommy didn’t know what she was doing, but Carrie seemed all right. “What are you up to, Care?” He had plenty of time before he had to get ready for his date with Hector; he had figured that it would take them a while to agree on an outfit. He walked over and sat down next to Carrie on the floor. “Thinking?”
Carrie snickered and faced Tommy with a grin on her face. “Yeah. I’m going to turn this room into a place where I can write.” She knew that Tommy had come over for a reason, so it was a little weird that her friend stayed still and smiled at her. “What?”
Tommy pulled his feet up, and then wrapped an arm around his knees as he let his chin rest on his knees. “So you finally decided?” He had to grin because he knew who had convinced Carrie to follow through on the idea of a writing room. He wanted to ask Carrie about what was going on with her and Kelly. He thought Carrie might have feelings for Kelly. “I can help if you want.”
Carrie glanced around the room; she knew it would be a big project to take on by herself. “Okay, but tell me about why you came over, because I have no idea where to start with this room.” She wanted Kelly's help, but the other singer was still out of town. Carrie was glad that she had a room picked out though because she knew that would keep them from wasting time.
“I just wanted to get your help with some clothes for my date tonight with Hector, that can wait till later. Tell me what we are going to do to this room.” As much as he wanted to talk to Carrie, especially after he had seen her dancing with Kelly, Tommy wouldn’t push Carrie. He knew from his own experiences that if Carrie was thinking about Kelly in a romantic way, she was probably confused, so the best thing he could do was just spend time with her until she wanted to talk.
Carrie shrugged her shoulders. “All I know is that I have to put this stuff in one of the other guest rooms so that we can paint. But I don’t know if I want to paint in here.” Carrie softly laughed at the expression on Tommy’s face. “I didn’t say I knew what I wanted to do with the room.” She glanced at her watch as Tommy laughed at her joke. “What time is your date?” It wasn’t strange for them to help each other with dates, though usually she was the one asking for Tommy’s help.
“I told you to forget about that, it’s not for hours still.” Tommy looked around at the furniture in the room. He really didn’t want to move anything if Carrie wasn’t sure that she wanted to paint the room. “You’re probably going to paint it right? So, let’s try to figure what color because we are really not the right two people to move the furniture on our own. That’s what we have Matt for.”
Carrie laughed at Tommy’s comment, and then she leaned over and hugged her friend when Tommy put his knees down and held his arms out expectantly. “All right. All right, enough with the hugging. I’m thinking that I should paint it something light or bright. I don’t really want to paint it something that doesn’t go with the rest of the house, and I don’t want it to be gloomy.”
Tommy agreed with Carrie, so he just nodded and continued to look at the room. He had a feeling for the colors Carrie liked, and he knew that if they really thought about it, that they would have all the details figured out in a couple of hours. “Why don’t we call Kelly and have her come over and help us? She’s the one who really got you thinking about this right?” Of course, Tommy already knew the answer to his second question, but he wanted to feel out Carrie’s feelings for Kelly.
“Yeah, but she can’t help us, she’s in Texas.” Carrie considered calling Kelly, but she didn’t want to interrupt her friend’s family time. They had talked a little every few days, but she thought it might be weird if she called Kelly to help her decorate over the phone. Carrie didn’t want to do anything strange after what she had accidentally done at the bar. “She’s uh, she just wanted to spend some time with her family after her promo concert, so this is kinda silly to bug her with.”
Tommy thought that Carrie’s reason for not calling Kelly had nothing to do with the explanation Carrie had given him because of the way his friend had hesitated. Although, he didn’t doubt that Kelly was back home; he just knew better than to believe Carrie’s explanation. “I’m sure she wouldn’t mind. You guys hang out all the time. Besides, weren’t you talking about how you wanted her to help you out with this? Like, you had already asked her?”
Carrie turned her head away from Tommy as she frowned. She didn’t remember telling him about asking Kelly, though it was possible that she had. She talked about Kelly with Tommy since her friend liked Kelly so much. “She’s at home. I’m not going to bother her about something like this.” Carrie could picture the awkward conversation in her head. Call Kelly up and ask her to decorate her house after accidentally making Kelly want to kiss her, like that wouldn’t lead Kelly on at all or confuse the other girl. Carrie shook her head and cursed in her head for wanting to get Kelly back for laughing at her dancing; she had only meant to surprise and make Kelly quit laughing.
Tommy hadn’t expected Carrie to turn away, so he decided to back off from the subject of Kelly. If something was going on, then Carrie was still not ready to discuss it if she didn’t even want to talk about decorating with Kelly. “I didn’t mean it like you had to, I just thought you might want the extra opinion.” Tommy smiled when Carrie quit staring off at the other side of the room. “What about like a melon color? It’s bright, cheery, and it would go with the rest of the house.”
It took Carrie a bit to realize what Tommy had said since she had begun to think about dancing with Kelly at the bar. “That could work.” She nodded her head a few times as she thought over the suggestion. “We need some color samples, and it wouldn’t hurt to get some extra lights for in here.”
Tommy bit his lip as he considered Carrie’s last suggestion. “What about if we get some instruments, or we could even try to paint some on the walls? Oh, and we could get one of those little fountains to help you concentrate? Or we could set the room up with a sound system, that would be so cool!” Tommy grinned when Carrie smiled encouragingly at him.
Carrie half listened to Tommy’s ideas as she thought about the night at the bar again. She had tried not to act weird after what she had done, but she hadn’t really felt comfortable. She had been able to act like usual around Kelly, but she had watched to make sure that their dancing together didn’t upset the other singer. Carrie understood that Kelly thought she was attractive, though she had honestly forgotten about it with all the time that they had spent hanging out.
Tommy stared at Carrie and waited for his friend to say something about his ideas. Carrie was looking in his direction, although he was sure she wasn’t listening to him after thirty seconds of silence. His friend would hesitate if she were afraid of hurting someone’s feelings, though not for this long. Carrie was too direct and expected the same of her friends. “Carrie?”
Carrie realized that Tommy had called her name, and looked at him and smiled. “Yeah?”
Kelly didn’t try to compliment her, or touch her, more than friends would, and so she had reacted like she would with Matt or any of her other friends when Kelly had made fun of her. Carrie sighed and tried not to think about the way Kelly had stared at her lips. She didn’t want to lose Kelly as a friend, so she was going to try her hardest to forget about how weird the whole experience had made her feel. Carrie was brought out of her thoughts when she felt Tommy grab her wrist.
Tommy helped Carrie stand up, because he had already stood and she hadn’t noticed. “Come on, we’re going to go get some paint samples, and then we’re going back to my place so you can help me get ready for my date.” He didn’t like keeping his thoughts to himself since Carrie hadn’t really been into their conversation once he had mentioned Kelly. However, he couldn’t make Carrie talk when she clearly didn’t want to talk about whatever was going on in her head.
“Sounds like a plan, just give me a few minutes to grab a couple things, and then we can go?” When Tommy agreed, Carrie hugged him to make up for her lack of participation in their discussion. “Could you bring Ace in for me?” She went to her room to get her purse while Tommy went downstairs to get Ace. She could forget about her embarrassment before Kelly came back to Nashville. She wouldn't lose Kelly as her friend because of a dumb mistake.

Kelly laid on her bed as she thought about if she should call Carrie. She had talked with the other girl once a night while she had been at home, but this was the first day that she had felt like calling the blonde and talking to Carrie for more than ten minutes. The incident at the club had confused her, and she hadn’t been able to think about how it made her feel while she had been promoting her CD. Once she had got home though, Kelly had spent most of her time writing out her emotions. She finally felt like she had everything sorted out.
Jason almost shouted when he walked past his baby sister’s room and saw that Kelly was still in her room. He had watched as Kelly worked for hours writing in her music room and then would go crash in the bedroom before she would start the process all over. For three days, he had watched as his baby sister struggled to describe her feelings for something or someone. Jason quickly composed himself and knocked on the door frame as he smiled at Kelly. “Glad you finally decided to get your butt up out of bed there, sis.”
Kelly looked over at Jason for a moment, and then she moved so that she was sitting up on her bed. “It’s still early for me.” She smiled for Jason and hoped that he would be on his way, but her brother didn’t move an inch. Kelly wasn’t angry with Jason; she just didn’t want to give him the opportunity to bring up Carrie. She wasn’t sure why her brother was so convinced that she and Carrie were dating. “I’ll be down in a little while to get some breakfast.”
Jason watched his sister for a few moments as he decided how to handle her behavior. He didn’t know why she had spent so much time writing recently; if it was because of Carrie or what. He didn’t want Kelly to retreat into herself though, so he grinned and moved so that he was leaning back against the edge of the door frame. “Ashley made an awesome breakfast. There’s waffles and all that other good stuff she makes. We’re also, uh,” Jason quickly thought about what Kelly would want to do after being away from home for a while. “Taking the horses out.”
Kelly got up and walked away from Jason to get some clothes. She needed to change out of her pajamas before she could do anything. “That sounds great. I’ll be down in a few minutes, Jase. Just have to make a few calls first, and then we can spend the day out.” Kelly was sure that the idea of making the rounds of the property would satisfy Jason. She casually looked over her shoulder as she searched through her dresser, but Jason was still her doorway, grinning.
"All right, I’ll make sure Ashley doesn’t get all upset while you’re on the phone with Carrie.” Jason straightened himself up; he wanted a hug, but he wasn’t sure if Kelly was up for one. When Kelly just smiled and nodded at him, Jason decided to quit and go downstairs. “Tell Carrie I said hi, and maybe ask her if she wants to come back with us next time. It’d be nice to have the both of you around for the entire visit.”
Kelly shut her dresser drawer. “Jason, hold on.” She tossed the clothes she had grabbed onto the bed as she walked over to her brother. She was tired of him saying that she and Carrie were together. She didn’t want to hear anything about the subject for the rest of the trip.
Jason had a grin on his face as he turned back towards Kelly’s room and Kelly, though when he saw her annoyed and saddened expression, his grin faded. “What’s wrong, Kel?” He had hoped that whatever had kept Kelly from dancing with Carrie hadn’t been the reason why his sister was upset, but it seemed like that might be the case. “Is it Carrie?”
Kelly didn’t want to hurt Jason’s feelings, but she didn’t need his constant reminders; they just dragged her down. “I’m not dating Carrie. She’s not going to be coming back with us ever, okay?” Kelly sighed when she saw the hurt look in her brother’s eyes. “I know you’re trying to show me that you’re cool with me dating Carrie, but that’s the thing, I’m not dating her. Okay?”
Jason didn’t understand what was going on if Kelly and Carrie weren’t dating. He knew they had gone out a few times, and they spent a lot of their free time together. “Is that why you’re so upset? That you guys aren’t calling it dating?” Kelly had given him the impression that Carrie was newly out, and that the other girl didn’t want to broadcast it; but every time he had seen the pair together, Carrie was always sure of herself and of Kelly. “Do you want me to talk to her?” For all he knew, Carrie could not want to label the relationship because the blonde didn't want to lie to people.
"You’re so sweet, Jase, but so dumb sometimes.” Kelly ran a hand through her hair while she thought about what she could say to convince Jason that there wasn’t anything between her and Carrie. “She’s a good friend, but we’re not dating. I met someone else at the last party, okay? There’s no me and Carrie. You don’t have to worry about talking with her to find out why I’m upset, because I’m not. Carrie’s my friend, that’s all she is.” Kelly seriously stared at Jason so that he would drop the subject and the idea of her and Carrie dating.
Jason blinked a couple times as he tried to process the new information with the old. “Okay, got it. I’m sorry I bugged you.” He left the room before he could piss off his sister. He didn’t understand how Kelly could just give up on Carrie because the blonde didn’t want to label them, but if it was what Kelly wanted, then he would support her. Even if Kelly had just spent the last three days by herself, obviously trying to come to terms with the choice herself.
Kelly didn’t like that she’d had to be so terse with Jason, so she shut the door to her room and started to get ready for the day. She hadn’t exactly lied to Jason. She had gotten a girl’s number at the party, but she didn’t plan on calling the girl. Still, Kelly felt a little guilty for shutting down Jason the way she had. Kelly just told herself that she had to do it, and that she would make it up to him by spending the day with him. He would get over what she had said within a day or two.
By the time Kelly had showered, dressed, and made it downstairs for breakfast, her brother wasn’t anywhere to be found inside the house. She went to the kitchen to get something to eat and see if Ashley knew where Jason was. Kelly already felt a little better about everything that had gone on recently. She had dealt with her confusion, and Jason would forgive her after some bonding. “Something smells good. Do ya have any waffles left, Ash?”
Ashley silently watched Kelly seat herself at the table. “Not for you. I gave them to Jason. There’s some fruit left and you know where the cereal is.” Ashley calmly sipped her coffee and completely disregarded the surprised expression on her friend’s face. Jason had quickly eaten breakfast so he could check on Kelly, and then the poor boy had come back down looking so sad, that Ashley had given him what was left of the waffles since she knew Jason could always eat and he had complimented the breakfast between every bite the first time around.
Kelly couldn’t believe that Ashley hadn’t made breakfast for her. She didn’t expect Ashley to cook, but Ashley always made enough for the three of them when the other girl did cook. After a minute of silence, she realized that Ashley was trying to get her to apologize to Jason. “I was gonna apologize. I planned on spending the day with Jason and you.” Kelly looked at her best friend and hoped Ashley would tell her that it was a joke, and of course there was breakfast for her.
Ashley shrugged her shoulders and finished the last of her coffee. “If that’s what you want, then go ahead.” She wasn’t going to get involved in whatever was going on with Kelly and Jason.
Kelly stared at Ashley for a moment before she got out of her chair and headed towards the kitchen. She grumbled all the way to the cupboards where she got a bowl and a spoon, and then to the pantry to grab a box of cereal. “I don’t care if she’s playing or not, that’s just mean.”
Ashley gathered her plates and took them to the kitchen. She stayed out of Kelly’s way as the other girl prepared a bowl of cereal. “I’m going into town, there’s a few things I have to get. Do you need anything?” She went about putting her dishes in the sink while she listened for a reply.
Kelly set the milk down before she could pour it in her cereal, and then faced Ashley. She couldn’t believe Ashley was really going to make her eat cereal. “I don’t like this reverse psychology stuff, Ash.” Kelly crossed her arms over her chest and waited for Ashley to tell her to go apologize.
“There’s no reverse anything going on, Kel.” Ashley looked at Kelly for a second, but when her friend didn’t move or speak, she walked out of the kitchen. “I’ll be back in an hour or so.” Ashley knew she didn’t have to do or say anything to make Kelly apologize to Jason; Kelly would want to do it regardless. Ashley wasn’t surprised to hear the back door slam shut while she got her belongings together. She shook her head and chuckled at the brother and sister’s behavior towards one another.
Kelly walked right to the stables because that’s where Jason had said he would be after breakfast. “Telling me there was waffles, and then there weren’t any. Stupid Ashley. Stupid waffles.” Kelly continued to mutter under her breath until she found Jason. “Jase?” She stood next to the stall of the horse her brother was getting ready to ride and hoped that Jason wasn’t too upset with her. If Ashley’s treatment of her was any indication of Jason’s though…
Jason quit messing with the horse and looked over his shoulder at Kelly. “Yeah?” One look at Kelly’s crossed arms and frustrated expression made him turn right back towards the horse. He didn’t know what he could have done to piss Kelly off all the way from the stalls.
“What you doing?” Kelly toed the ground with one of her shoes as she watched her brother work, or rather do anything he could so that he didn’t have to look at her.
"Getting ready to go for a ride.” Jason stood up and patted the horse a few times, and then he looked at Kelly again. He didn’t know what to say. Kelly didn’t look angry any longer, but she wasn’t looking at him either. He just knew he wasn’t going to bring up Carrie any time soon.
Kelly sighed and walked over to Jason. “This is stupid. I’m sorry I hurt your feelings, okay?” She bit her lip when Jason didn’t say anything about her apology, so she tried again. “Things with Carrie are confusing, so I would really appreciate it if you wouldn’t,” Kelly sighed again because if she said the wrong thing, Jason would think she and Carrie were together. “Things are just confusing, and I’m sorry I took it out on you. I know you wanted to make sure I was all right.”
Jason was trying to think of the right way to let Kelly know that he understood, but she hugged him before he could say anything. He smiled and hugged Kelly back hard. “I won’t say anything about it. Just know that I’m here.” Jason was happy that Kelly had shared a little with him and had apologized. It was more than he had expected actually. “Grab a brush.”
Kelly pulled back from the hug and blushed guiltily. “I want to go out riding with you, but I haven’t eaten yet. I wanted to apologize to you first.” Jason’s little frown made her blush deepen, but before she could protest, Jason put an arm around her and started to go back to the house.
"You know better than that, Kel. Crazy girl, trying to put off breakfast.” Jason brought Kelly back to the house so that they could fix some kind of breakfast. He didn’t want Kelly overexerting herself because he knew his sister’d had next to no sleep since they’d left Nashville. “We’ll go out for a ride later. I’ve been wanting to show you this game I picked up yesterday.”
Kelly grinned at the mention of a new game, and that Jason had quickly gotten over their tiny dispute. “I can make cereal in five minutes. Does that give you enough time to set up the game?”
Jason playfully grumbled and pulled Kelly closer. “I guess cereal’s better than you setting the kitchen on fire, but I’m making eggs for you.” He grinned when Kelly lightly hit his stomach, and then he kissed the top of her head before he let go of her. “Go on, I know you need the head start to finish your cereal before I finish cooking the eggs.”
Kelly stuck her tongue out at Jason, although when he laughed, she ran for the backdoor so that she would get to the kitchen first. “I already had my cereal started, so you better run if you want to beat me!”
