"Does she remember today's her birthday?" Kate asked as she sat in between Jill and Ashley in the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
"I think the only thing on her mind right now is that she's on stage with a guitar legend," Ashley laughed softly.
"It's funny how well she fits with him," Jill noted.
"What do you mean?" Kate questioned.
"Well, like Ashley said, he's a musical legend, but Kelly doesn't seem at all out of place on stage with him."
"Yea, you're right," she nodded, watching as the short Texan rehearsed. "Great song choice, too. She's gonna blow them away tomorrow."
"She does love her some Patty Griffin," Ashley nodded.
"I can't believe they wanted her to sing 'Never Again'. I mean, I'd understand maybe, maybe if it was like a really nice ballad that was about hope or something, but not a rock song about a jackass."
"You'll get over that real fast," Ashley assured.
"Get over what?"
"The disbelief. You can't imagine some of the stuff they try to get Kelly to do. Unfortunately for them, KC's not their typical bimbo that's just in it to get famous."
Kate smiled as she continued to watch Kelly on stage.
"What?"
"Just can't help but feel proud of her," she shrugged.
Ashley laughed softly as she caught her best friends eye on stage, "Yea, that happens a lot."
Kelly took out her phone, looking at the time. "Shit, I'm sorry, guys. Oh, crap, I'm sorry about the cursing thing," she apologized into the microphone, causing everyone in the auditorium to laugh. "Ten more minutes, then I promise we'll leave for lunch."
Ashley waved her off, letting her know that she had plenty of time.
"So where are we going?" Jill asked.
"I don't know. She's the birthday girl--you're gonna have to ask her."
"If we leave it up to her, it'll probably be like Chucky Cheese," Jill pointed out.
Ashley nodded, "You joke, but we so went there two years ago for her birthday."
++++++++
"The Cheesecake Factory," Jill smiled. "Good choice."
"I'd say so," Kelly nodded as she watched the valet pull away with her car.
Kate laughed softly at the look on her face, "Still not used to that?"
"I don't see why I can't just park it myself," she shrugged. "Plus I hate the thought of someone in my vehicle, digging through my stuff."
"It's not like you have much in there," she smiled as Kelly stepped back, allowing her to walk into the restaurant before her. "Pretty much just water bottles and CD's."
"I know. It just still weirds me out, I guess."
"Donavon," Ashley told the host.
"I didn't know they take reservations," Jill commented as the host walked away.
"Valet but no reservations?" Kelly raised an eyebrow.
"Well, if you have big parties, they like for you to call ahead," Ashley explained. "Or if you have someone special with you..."
Kelly grinned, "That's me right? It's totally my birthday today."
"Yes, Kelly, that's it," Ashley rolled her eyes, laughing softly. "You're special because it's your birthday, not because you're a world-renowned singer."
"Oh..." Kelly's eyes grew wide. "So it's not because of my birthday?"
"Have you ever wondered why every time you come here you never have to wait for a table like everybody else? It's not your birthday every day of the year, kiddo."
Kelly frowned, "You don't have to call in every time we come, you know."
Ashley sighed, wrapping an arm around her as they waited for the host to come back from making sure their table was set up, "I don't do it to get special treatment--I know you hate that. I just do it because you're always so rushed trying to get from one thing to another, so you don't really have time to wait around for a table."
"We can always just get To-Go," Kelly shrugged.
"We will next time," Ashley assured, smiling as the host returned.
"Right this way," she smiled.
Kelly followed Ashley as they made their way to the table. She started to sit down, but quickly thought better as she reached over, pulling Kate's chair out for her with a smile.
"Thanks," Kate smiled back, her cheeks a light pink.
Ashley and Jill struggled not to laugh.
"You're welcome," Kelly's eyes held a soft spark as she held Kate's gaze a moment longer than necessary.
++++++++
"So what else do you want to do today?" Ashley asked after their food had arrived.
"Bowling," Kelly's eyes lit up.
"Bowling?" Jill laughed.
"There are bowling places around here, right?" Kelly looked at the three of them.
"I'll look and see," Ashley replied. "And if not?"
"Movie night?"
"Sounds good to me."
"It's your birthday, and you want to stay in and watch movies?" Kate eyed Kelly curiously.
"Actually, I want to bowl, but movies is a good second."
"No going out? Partying?"
"If we were in Texas, then yea, but I'm so not into the whole L.A. scene. Plus, the Idol thing's tomorrow, and I don't want to screw that up. And don't forget I'm having a party in a couple days, so it's not like I'm missing out--I'm just in a let's just relax mood today."
"So, which movies?" Ashley asked, looking up from her phone.
"No bowling alley?"
"Not unless you feel like driving an hour and a half," she shook her head.
"Movies it is," Kelly turned back to Kate. "Y'all are coming, right?"
"Your place?"
"Yea," she grinned slightly. "Y'all can stay over, so you don't have to worry about driving back late."
Kate turned to Jill who nodded. She looked back at the short Texan, "Sounds great."
++++++++
"You do realize that you invited her to sleep over, right?" Ashley asked as she watched Kelly rummage through her closet.
"Trust me, I know...do you think it was too obvious? Maybe I should invite the guys over too..."
"No, I think you're good. You did invite Jill to stay too, so it wasn't awkward or anything. That would've been funny though, if you had just asked Kate to sleep over."
"I thought you thought this was a bad idea?"
"Doesn't mean I don't find it entertaining."
"So, what do you wear for a sleep over?"
"Nothing," Ashley smiled.
Kelly laughed, "You know what I meant. Do I put on jeans and a shirt, or pajamas, or what?"
"Kelly, you don't own pajamas."
"So I'm back to being nekked again, huh?"
"Yep," she laughed.
"Hm...are you sure I don't own pajamas?"
"You never sleep in them."
"I never sleep in anything."
"I know. So, what would be the point of you having pajamas if you never wear them?" Ashley questioned, moving to the side of her as she rummaged through her drawers. Ashley's eyes grew wide as she picked something up out of one. "Well, maybe you do have pajamas. I mean, you have lingerie, but you never wear underwear, so..."
"Give me that," Kelly took the thin piece of material from her, quickly shoving it back in her drawer.
Ashley smirked, "Who gave you that?"
"Maybe I bought it for myself."
"No, you didn't because that would mean you would have thought as yourself as sexy, and that so isn't your style."
"I can be sexy," she frowned slightly.
"I'm not saying you aren't sexy; I'm saying you just don't see yourself that way."
Kelly shrugged, "Sometimes it's nice to be someone else."
Ashley smiled softly, "You did buy it...worn it for anyone yet?"
"No," she blushed. "I so couldn't pull of something like that."
Ashley rolled her eyes.
"Ash..."
"Yes?" she handed her an Aerosmith t-shirt and a pair of jeans.
"Do you think...Kate..."
"Do I think that she thinks you're sexy?"
"No," her cheeks turned a darker shade of red. "I know she just thinks I'm a dork. She doesn't take me seriously."
"Ok, then what about Kate?"
"I was gonna ask if you thought I even had a chance with her, but I guess I just answered my own question."
"Kelly..." Ashley sighed. "You said it was just fun."
"It is."
"Doesn't sound like it."
"No, it is...it is. I was just being dumb. You know how I'm always thinking about the craziest stuff. Just having one of those moments."
Ashley looked at her, unconvinced.
++++++++
Ashley smiled as she opened the door to the apartment, "Hey."
"Wow," Jill eye's grew wide as they walked inside. "This is an apartment?"
"She wanted something big and homey," Ashley shrugged. "Still don't think she's completely comfortable here, but that may just be L.A. and not the apartment."
"Probably so," Kate nodded, looking around. "Where is she?"
"Kitchen," Ashley replied off-handed before turning to her with a smile. "Why don't you go help her out? She's fixing the snacks."
"Ok," Kate replied, following in the direction Ashley had pointed. She turned the corner, smiling as she noticed Kelly moving quickly around the kitchen, a party hat on top of her head. "Cute."
Kelly turned around, a huge smile forming when she saw Kate standing there, "Hey!"
Kate laughed as she walked to her, allowing the shorter girl to pull her into a hug, "Happy Birthday."
"Thanks," Kelly pulled back. "Oh, I have something for you." She turned around, grabbing a hat off the counter.
Kate shook her head as she bent down slightly.
Kelly put it on her head for her, adjust the string under her chin. She let her thumb graze along her jaw line, keeping it on her chin as she smiled softly, "I'm really glad you came."
"You asked me to," her voice wavered slightly.
Kelly pulled her hand back respectively, "I know."
"Were you worried I wouldn't come?"
Kelly smirked boldly, "It's my birthday. I had not doubt you'd come...for me."
Kate could feel her cheeks burning.
"Are you hot?" Kelly asked, fighting back the laugh that she felt bubbling in the back of her throat. "I can turn the AC on."
"No, I'm fine," Kate replied quickly.
"You know," she sobered up for a moment, getting Kate to look at her. "You are really beautiful."
Kate's breath caught in surprise. She quickly masked it with a smile as she shook her head, "Kelly..."
"No, I'm being serious," Kelly replied. "I know you think I just joke around a lot, but I really mean it...you're beautiful."
"Oh, well, thanks," she smiled softly, her cheeks a light shade of pink.
Kelly returned the smile, both of them turning quickly at the sound of someone walking in to the kitchen.
"Let's get this party started!" Ashley cheered, grabbing a plate of chips and salsa.
Kelly laughed, rolling her eyes as she grabbed the plate of brownies, following her best friend into the living room.
++++++++++++
Kelly put the last of the snacks down on the coffee table, briefly looking around the living room. Jill was stretched out on the recliner and Ashley and Kate were on the sofa, "Hey, Ash...I forgot the drinks. You wanna go grab them for me?"
"Sure," Ashley nodded, standing up.
Kelly put the plates down on the coffee table, watching as Ashley walked out before she joined Kate on the couch, offering a small smile.
Ashley walked back into the room with an armful of drinks. She noticed Kelly sitting next to Kate and resisted the urge to roll her eyes. She settled on a quiet chuckle instead as she set the drinks down, "Dig in."
Kelly smiled, proud of herself as she reached forward for a soda.
Ashley sat on the other side of her, causing Kelly to have to scoot a little closer to Kate. "Real smooth," she mumbled under her breath.
Kelly laughed softly.
++++++++++
Kelly glanced at Kate out the corner of her eye. The tall blonde winced, closing her eyes as something popped out on the screen. "Scared?" she whispered.
"I'm not good with scary movies," Kate admitted softly. She jumped as the bad guy cut off the girl's arm.
"Kate, this movie is like from the sixties...the effects are so horrible..."
"He just cut off her arm," she pointed out.
"It's not like he's gonna jump out of the t.v. and get you," she teased.
Kate frowned, "When I hear you screaming in your sleep because some crazy guy is standing over you with an axe, I reserve the right to say I told you so."
"Kate...Kate," Kelly said softly, getting her to turn and look at her. "Come see," she held up the blanket that she was sitting under.
Kate scooted closer, allowing Kelly to place the blanket over the both of them.
Kelly reached over her, tucking it under her legs. "Now, this may look like an ordinary blanket," she whispered, still leaning to her so that only she could hear. "But it's not."
"It's not?"
"Nope. It's totally a magic blanket."
"A magic blanket?" she laughed softly.
"Yep," Kelly nodded, looking her in the eye. Their faces were close. "It's magic because it protects whomever is sitting under it from all evil bad guys."
"Really?"
"Yea."
"Promise?"
"Promise," she smiled, pulling back to finish watching the movie.
++++++++++
Kelly took a deep breath as she looked around the room. Jill and Ashley were both sound asleep. Kate was still sitting, flush against her as they shared a blanket. A hint of perfume caught her nose, and her stomach tightened. She shifted slightly, and her thigh moved against Kate's. She was suddenly regretting her seating choice as she felt her heart speed up.
"Kelly?" she heard a soft voice next to her ear. "You're awake?"
"Yea," Kelly nodded, noticing that the movie's credits were rolling. She had somehow missed the end of it.
"You want me to put on another movie?" Kate asked quietly.
"You don't want to go to sleep?" Kelly turned to her.
"It's your birthday," she shrugged. "I'll stay up with you if you're not ready to go to bed."
Kelly smiled, "Let's see if there's something good on t.v. I have all the movie channels, and I don't feel like getting up to put a new DVD in."
Kate nodded, returning her smile.
+++++++++
Kelly stretched as she stood up, moving to pick up the cookie dish.
"Leave it," Ashley grumbled as she drug her feet towards her room. "It's almost four in the morning. We'll get it later."
Kelly nodded, following her down the hall. She stopped at the guest room, opening the door. She saw Jill passed out on the king size bed while Kate pulled on a hoodie over her t-shirt.
"Cold?" Kelly questioned.
"A little," Kate replied, walking to her so she wouldn't wake Jill.
"You could've told me; I would've turned the air down."
"That's ok. I know that stuff's important."
"What stuff?"
"The temperature and stuff. You have to keep it at a constant for your voice, right?"
Kelly laughed softly, "How much of a diva do you think I am?"
Kate blushed slightly.
"So...pink, huh?" Kelly tugged gently on the string of Kate's bright pink hoodie. "You wear it a lot."
"It's my favorite color," Kate admitted.
"Yea?" Kelly raised an eyebrow.
Kate nodded.
"How tired are you?"
"I'm still pretty awake, actually."
"Wanna see something cool?"
"Yea," Kate smiled, taking Kelly's outstretched hand. She closed the bedroom door carefully, allowing Kelly to guide her back down the hall.
+++++++++++
"Oh my God..." Kate gasped. "Are you kidding me?"
Kelly smiled as Kate's eyes lit up.
"A hot pink Mustang? Seriously?" she turned to Kelly in awe. "Seriously?"
"Seriously," Kelly nodded.
"I mean...this has to be like one of a kind, right?"
"No clue," she jingled the keys. "Feel like going for a ride?"
"It's four in the morning," she smiled.
"That's so a yes," Kelly grinned, unlocking the doors as Kate hurried around to the passenger side.
++++++++++
"Seriously," Kelly giggled as she and Kate lay with their seats reclined and the top down--the sky wide open above them. "I was standing out there with a portable karaoke machine, singing full out."
"People probably thought you were crazy," Kate laughed.
"Yea, but this one man stopped. He thought the fact that I was actually standing out there in front of the record company's building was hilarious. He found it even funnier that I could actually sing."
"What'd he do?"
"Turned out he worked there. He set me up doing some background vocal work for a bunch of bands and artists."
"That's awesome."
"Definitely one of the happier endings of the stories from back then."
"You had a hard time trying to make it?"
"Who doesn't?"
"True," Kate nodded, taking a deep breath of the near morning air. "The stars are fading."
"Yea..."
"You think we can stay for the sunrise?"
"If you want to, then yea."
"It's your birthday," Kate reminded, looking at her. "We should do what you want."
"Well, then I want to watch the sunrise with you."
Kate smiled, turning back to the sky, "It's so beautiful. I didn't know places like this existed in L.A."
"You just have to know what you're looking for," Kelly replied. "So, any good questions?"
"Hmm...actually, I do have one."
"Go for it."
"What's your real deal with valets?"
"I don't have a problem with them."
"You really didn't seem like you liked them the other day. That just...it seemed odd coming from you."
Kelly nodded, "After Idol, and when my career first started, I didn't have a problem with them. I mean, I didn't get the point, but I didn't mind either."
"Then why do you mind now?" Kate watched as Kelly's brow furrowed in thought while she continued to watch the stars.
"I have something to hide now, and that's always somewhere in the back of my mind. Everything I do...everything I say...I have to think so hard when I'm in front of people just to make sure I don't screw up and let it slip."
Kate chewed lightly on her bottom lip. The brief moments like this when Kelly let her guard down, were when Kate felt like she could see the artist that had written all the songs that had been on repeat on her ipod for months now. The thought of Kelly being that open with her, excited her and worried her at the same time. She hated the thought of Kelly locking herself in the bathroom after that concert, even more so now that she knew she had talked to her that day and had known something was wrong, but hadn't done anything about it.
"I guess I just always feel like, I don't know...I'm always afraid I left something in there, or there's just gonna be something in my car that gives me away. I can just about imagine the valet guy running down the street, screaming, 'Kelly Clarkson's a big ol' lesbian!'."
Kate laughed.
"Pretty stupid, huh?"
"I don't know...wouldn't you feel a little bit of relief, though? I mean, you wouldn't have to hide anything, anymore."
Kelly shrugged, "It's my life. I mean, even when I was dating guys, I didn't want the media to find out. That's just so personal, you know?"
"Yea," Kate agreed.
"Oh, sit up, hurry," Kelly moved her seat into an upright position.
Kate quickly followed.
"Look," Kelly pointed out before them. The sun was slowly rising over the city below.
"Wow..." Kate breathed.
"It's perfect, right?" Kelly smiled. "I wish I always felt this calm when I'm over here. I think more people need to see this. Maybe that way L.A. wouldn't be so messed up." She quickly looked down at the feeling of Kate's fingers brushing over the back of her hand.
"Happy birthday," Kate whispered, looking her in the eye.
"Thanks," Kelly turned her hand over, lacing their fingers together for a brief moment, squeezing her hand gently before pulling away and turning back to the sunrise.
