Nervously Carrie slowed her pace as she noticed a car swiftly pulling up alongside the curb. It took her a moment to realize that her legs stopped moving altogether as she craned her neck to get a better look inside of the vehicle. She felt a small wave of relief wash over when she recognized Kelly’s friend Ashley in the driver’s seat and naturally, she assumed, Kelly was the passenger. Taking a deep breath she finally willed herself to move toward the car, pausing and slightly hunching forward so that she was level with the other girls.
"Hey guys, um I live just a couple more blocks down the street so I'm okay walking, it's not that-"
Ashley cut her off. "It's no big deal; in fact I'd be offended if you didn't accept so just hop in."
She stood in silence, waiting, wondering, if Kelly was going to speak at all. "You're sure?" Carrie asked hesitantly, swallowing hard as Kelly finally turned her head towards her, their eyes meeting.
Kelly shrugged. "Not my car." Kelly muttered in response, Ashley’s fist crashing into her thigh not going unnoticed by Carrie.
“I’m sure.” She said finally, reaching behind her and unlocking the back door.
Straightening up Carrie moved away from the window and stepped forward towards the door to lower herself into the car. Once she pulled the door shut behind her Ashley peeled away from the curb before she even had the chance to buckle her seat belt.
“Um, thanks for the lift.” She said quietly, buckling her seat belt into place.
Ashley shot a quick glance over her shoulder. “Don’t sweat it, it’s no problem. It’s always a little rough being the new kid, right?”
She smiled politely from the backseat and noticed the short glance between the two girls in front of her. “Right, yeah. I mean, this was our first big move, I’ve never really been outside of Oklahoma before.” She admitted.
“Wow, really? That’s insane.” Ashley spoke, keeping her eyes on the road. “Well, welcome to Burleson,” She gave a short laugh, “How are you liking it so far?”
“It’s a little small but the people seem really nice so far.”
Kelly snorted. “I can’t imagine Checotah is any bigger.” She remembered the name of my town…
Ashley chose to ignore Kelly’s comment. “How was your first day? I saw you met some people.”
Her eyes met Ashley’s in the rear view mirror. “Um, it went well, I think. I did meet a few people, yeah. They seem…interesting.” She heard Kelly snort again and couldn’t help but feel the need to apologize. “I’m sorry about lunch.” She offered politely.
She watched Kelly shrug her shoulders, her body and eyes remaining forward. “Eh whatever, I’m used to them by now.” Finally she did turn and look at her. “Word of advice,” Kelly paused and continued when Carrie nodded her head, “I’d watch my back around them if I were you. They may seem nice and all of that on the outside, but they’re not nice people.” That was the second time in the same day Kelly had warned her about that group of people.
Carrie nodded again. “Honestly, Landon seems like the only nice one.”
Kelly managed a soft smile before facing forward again. “Yeah,” She spoke quietly, “He is the only nice one.”
“Sorry to cut in here, but which one is yours?” Ashley asked, slowing her car down.
Carrie turned her head and glanced out the window at the block of houses. “That one.” She and Kelly said in unison.
“Wow, nice place.”
She unbuckled her seat belt and moved to let herself out of the car. “Thanks…and thanks again for the ride.”
“Oh,” She spoke quickly, suddenly remembering. Digging inside of her backpack her hand emerged with a notebook, “You forgot this in Chemistry.” She handed the notebook to Kelly through the open passenger window.
Cautiously Kelly took it from her extended hand. “Thanks.”
“See you guys tomorrow…” She trailed off, giving a weak wave as she moved out of the street and onto the sidewalk.
Ashley nodded in return. “Later, Barbie.”
Before Carrie could react to or fully process the nickname, Ashley was pulling away from her house. As she watched the car disappear down the long block she wondered what was in store for her at school tomorrow.
