The day of the ultrasound had arrived and Kyo was up early. After finishing his school work with Die, he got dressed and started drinking the water needed to have the ultrasound test. Today was also the day that he would get to meet Die’s mother and the first in a long time that Die would see his mother. He hoped that all would go well. The boy could tell that maybe Die’s mother would be more accepting of him than his own family.
Kyo was steadily nursing at a bottle of water, fulfilling the requirement to have a full bladder to aid the ultrasound. Perhaps the kid should have waited up about that, though. At the rate he was drinking, by the time they got to the hospital, Kyo would be full to bursting. Die paused in front of his dresser mirror, dragging a brush through his hair. He was a little worried about how he looked for when he saw his mother. He was wearing dark jeans and a deep, blood red shirt that buttoned up.
Somehow, he vividly remembered the worn out, hole-covered jeans and the cut-up shirt he had been wearing when she had kicked him out. The redhead wanted to appear as far away from that person as possible. Finally satisfied to a suitable degree, he picked up his keys and wallet, and walked out to where Kyo was seated on the couch. “Are you ready to go?”
“Yeah, I’ve been waiting on you this entire time.” He smiled up at the redhead and stood from the couch, carrying his water bottle with him as he walked to the front door. “We have a full day today, so we should get going now before we’re late.” They were cutting it pretty close to Kyo’s appointment for his ultrasound.
“Any other day, I couldn’t get you up for anything,” Die joked, letting Kyo pass through the door as he held it out of the way. The redhead tugged the door closed and locked it, following the blond to the car. They both settled in the vehicle and after a moment, they left, headed for the hospital. Luckily, the roads were clear and it wasn’t that far away, really.
Once in the hospital and taken to the ultrasound room, Kyo lay down on the table and laced his fingers together, resting them on his chest. They were just in time too as the doctor came into the room. Kyo didn’t say anything as he watched Die and the ceiling, just thinking about the meeting with Die’s mother more so than the ultrasound.
The redhead watched with an almost apprehensive, strictly male feeling of exclusion as the technician began prepping Kyo for the procedure. The boy’s shirt was hauled up high, stopping short of his chest. Gloved hands squeezed a strange-looking gel onto Kyo’s exposed belly and then a funny-looking device hooked up to a monitor was placed against the boy’s stomach to smear around in the goop.
“This is a transducer,” the man explained, “It’s going to help us locate the fetus and transmit the image to the monitor.” With that, Die glued his gaze said screen, a little baffled by the grey nothingness that he saw. He knew the baby would be small, but how small, exactly? That was the question.
Turning his head to face the screen, Kyo watched it with much interest. All he saw was a black and white blur of his insides. Kyo squinted, trying to find out where the thing would be. He waited to see where the doctor would point out instead when he couldn’t find it himself. It was just a small circle right now, but it was still very much there.
“Right here,” the technician explained, circling an area on the monitor with a gloved fingertip. There was a tiny, circular figure, hardly making an impact in the space of Kyo’s uterus. Die’s breath halted for a moment and he forced himself to inhale again, the seriousness of the situation striking him again. There was his first true glimpse of his child.
Kyo watched the screen intently, a million things racing through his mind at that moment. Would it be a boy or a girl? Spoiled or well behaved? Would it lead a good life or need constant help? So many things about its future and if they were able to take care of it or not kept popping up in his head. His entire life was changed now along with Die’s. What was going to happen now?
Blinking several times, Die fought back a suspiciously tight feeling in his throat. The technician printed off a couple of copies of the snapshot and deftly cleaned up Kyo’s stomach. The redhead placed his hand on top of Kyo’s, giving the boy’s hand a slight squeeze. They were going to be parents. If the fact had seemed even a little abstract, there was no getting around it then. They were in it together and that was that.
With shaking hands, Kyo took the paper and sat up on the table, his one hand gripping the redheads tightly as he looked at the photo. There was so much he could have done with his life, but he couldn’t now and he wouldn’t have it any other way. He was free of his parents and with someone that truly cared about him. This child was enough to remind him of that and he knew he would love it and care for it no matter what and be a better parent, though still young, than his own parents. On that topic, he looked over to Die and cleared his throat. “So… We’re going to go see your mother now?”
“What?” Die said, glancing at Kyo. He had drifted for a moment, staring down at the tile floor, contemplating the depth of their situation. “Oh, right. Why don’t you head to the bathroom before we go?” the redhead suggested, digging in his pockets for his car keys.
Taking a quick stop at the bathroom, Kyo pissed and washed his hands before going out to the car with Die. It took a while before Die could bring himself to start the car and start to drive out of the parking lot. Kyo sat in the passenger side and looked out at the scenery go by, leaving the address finding up to Die.
The napkin that Die had written the address on was pushed into the cup holder on his side. Shockingly enough, he knew the area where his mother’s house was located. It had never occurred to him that his mom might have lived in the vicinity. Finding the correct address, the redhead turned into the drive and parked the car. For a moment, he simply peered through the windshield, feeling his pulse race slightly. She had moved from an apartment and into a snug-looking, single level house. The outside was such a charmingly plain white and there was a pair of yellow drapes in one of the windows. Die bet that was a kitchen window; his mother always liked yellow curtains in the kitchen.
“Are you ready?” the redhead asked, opening his door finally. Kyo nodded slightly and did the same, hopping out. They walked up to the front door and Die made a fist, rapping on the wood several times. He stepped back and took a breath, looking down for a moment.
Kyo could tell that Die was nervous, so he reached up and rubbed the other’s back soothingly. He could hear footsteps come closer to the door before he heard and saw the knob turn. Taking a gulp and a deep breath, he pulled his hand away from Die’s back, watching the door start to open slowly.
The door opened completely and Die was taken aback by the sight of his mother. It had been so long and he was shell-shocked momentarily. She was still a small woman, about two inches taller than Kyo, but she seemed even shorter than he remembered. “Come in,” she said, moving back and allowing them to do so.
Letting Die step in first, Kyo followed behind carefully. He was hesitant, not knowing how she would react to him being with her son, him being a hermaphrodite, and on top of that, being pregnant with her grandchild. It would all be overwhelming, that much was sure, but he didn’t know if it should be revealed now since it was the first day Die and her had made contact or even seen each other in years.
Die’s mother was very much the way he remembered her. If he remembered correctly, she wasn’t even forty yet. The general aura around her hardly even qualified to credit her as being in her thirties, though. And her hair was still dark, although it was pinned back with a clip. During his youth, her hair was almost always down and he remembered thinking that she looked very young, which she had been. Die had been a kid, though, and hadn’t realized that to be a parent you didn’t have to be very old at all. That notion rang a tad ironic, Die’s situation with Kyo considered.
“Come and sit down,” she invited, leading them to the kitchen and seating them at the table. Kyo sat in the chair next to Die’s and the redhead resisted the urge to reach over and place his hand on the boy’s arm. “Would you like some tea?” she questioned, but didn’t bother to wait for an answer before supplying the three of them with the beverage.
Kyo sat there nervously, feeling like he had to make a big first impression on Die’s mother, but he knew they were there right now for Die’s sake, not his. He still couldn’t help but feeling nervous around her though. The blond didn’t know if she’d like him or not and it made him feel even more nervous.
“How have you been?” That question seemed so pointless, even as Die asked it. His fingers toyed aimlessly with the cup that she had placed before him. The redhead felt like a kid again, like he was going to get in trouble over something.
His mother smiled at him and took a seat opposite of his, simply looking at him for a moment. “I’m fine,” she replied, taking a sip of her tea. “That’s not why you’re here, though, but I’m not mad about that,” she amended. Truly, she was happy that Die had reached out to talk to her. “I’m guessing that you are the person Die wanted me to meet.” She nodded at Kyo, looking at the boy with interest.
“Yes, I think so. I’m Kyo, it’s nice to meet you Mrs. Andou.” He smiled, trying to seem polite and proper to make a good impression on his mother. It only seemed right. Kyo was slightly tense, not knowing if she would right out reject him like his own parents or accept him.
“It’s nice to meet you, too.” Whoever this boy was, he was nervous and it was obvious. Die’s mother smiled reassuringly, the thought going through her mind briefly of who he was. Certainly, he wasn’t Die’s son? It would have shocked her to know that Die had fathered a child who was obviously already a teenager. After a second longer of contemplation, she decided that this boy was too old to be her son’s.
Die swallowed, tapping his fingers on the table briefly. “So, Mom… I have something I need to tell you,” he started, hesitating. His resolve faltered and he closed his mouth, pressing his lips together for a moment. How should he even say this? Maybe he should have practiced.
Giving a gulp, Kyo took in a deep breath and held it in. He gripped the seat of his chair tightly, and waited for Die to tell her the news. Kyo felt like he was ready to have a panic attack for some odd reason, much more so than when he introduced Die to his parents. He supposed it was because this was Die’s mother and that the redhead hadn’t seen her in a few years. It was like he had to make up for some other kind of quality, but what, he didn’t know.
“I’m with Kyo,” Die blurted out, suddenly. He hadn’t even expected for it to come out that way. “We’re sort of dating,” he added, feeling as though he was digging the hole deeper. For that matter, he realized, he had come out to his mother in a way. Technically speaking, Kyo was very visibly male.
Die’s mother’s eyes widened a little and she glanced at the other two people across the table from her. Was her son gay? Was that what he was trying to tell her? More importantly, would he have gone through the trouble of contacting her simply to tell her that? “Is there something else? Are you two planning to get married?” Something about the situation was off; a part of it seemed to be missing.
Kyo turned to look at Die, not wanting to speak up as he looked to the redhead for help. Turning his eyes back to the other’s mother, he hesitated before bowing his head and looking into his lap. The shit was about to hit the fan now. He was going to be found out and she was going to reject him, he just knew it.
“Something about Kyo is different,” Die stressed, finally unable to stop himself from grasping the boy’s hand. He could feel the tension rolling from the other in waves and it upset him. “He is,” Die paused for a long moment, looking down at the table and then back up to his mother. “He’s a hermaphrodite. He has female parts and male ones,” the redhead elaborated, unsure if his mother understood the term. “And Kyo is pregnant with my baby; your grandchild.”
Die’s mother looked intently at the boy, taking in that information. She was going to be a grandmother and this child was the mother of it? He seemed maybe too old for his age in a strange way she couldn’t place her finger on, but in spite of that, the poor thing looked terrified. “Don’t be so scared,” she reassured, smiling across the table at Kyo. She understood the fear that came with being so young and having parenthood handed to you. There was no way she could rightly place judgment.
Kyo jumped lightly before looking up at her through his bangs. “You… Don’t think it’s strange?” He was starting to shake slightly from nervousness. The boy didn’t know her reaction to the situation, but it seemed as if she was okay with it. Then again, his parents seemed to be okay with him, but he found out that they weren’t. He didn’t know how it would turn out.
“Tell me something, Kyo,” she started, picking up her tea and taking a small drink of it. She swallowed and closed her hands around the cup, holding it. “Exactly how old are you?” She wanted to hear this for herself.
Wincing slightly, Kyo gulped and seemed to cower back slightly. “I’m… sixteen…” His voice was small, not so confident anymore. He swallowed thickly and waited for the worst. She would shun him just like his parents and they’d be back to square one again, no family and depression from the lack of acceptance from people. ‘That’s what you get for being a monster…’ He thought to himself as he waited for his doom. Biting his lip, he held himself back from crying; just hoping he would be able to make it out of there before breaking down.
“I was pregnant with Die at age fifteen. He was born two months after my sixteenth birthday and I went through it alone. I don’t wish it on anyone and I’m not going to come to any conclusions about the kind of person you are because you’re carrying a baby right now.” She smiled and stood as though nothing was wrong, taking the boy’s cup to fill it with more tea, in spite of the fact that it hadn’t been touched.
Die took advantage of the moment to lean over and press a kiss against Kyo’s cheek. The skin felt very warm and he could feel a slight trembling to the boy’s frame. The redhead, too, was feeling a little shaken by what he had just revealed.
Returning to the table and placing the cup down, Die’s mother smiled again. She bent and looped an arm around Kyo, embracing the boy. It was obvious that he needed the reassurance desperately.
Kyo sniffled slightly and nodded before moving to hug her tight. “Thank you…” He didn’t know why he was saying thanks, but he felt he needed to say it. She was much nicer than his own parents and accepted him and the child. It made him feel much better now.
“If you two need anything, I’ll be glad to help.” She was thankful to have Die back in her life and even though the two newcomers he had brought with him were a surprise, she welcomed them just the same. It would be interesting to see her son as a father-to-be, without a doubt.
“Thanks… You’ve done a lot already…” He pulled back from her and sat in his chair properly. Kyo decided to leave his little family problem out. There was no need to get her into something worse than what there already was.
“How far along are you, if you don’t mind me asking?” Die’s mother questioned, taking her place in her chair once more. Already, she liked Kyo and wondered exactly how long until he was due to give birth. It seemed as though it would be quite a while, judging by his small size.
“I’m um… about seven weeks.” He answered, reaching out to finally take a drink of the tea. It helped soothe his nerves and make him feel much calmer. He sighed softly and closed his eyes briefly before opening them and looking at her once more.
“You have a long way to go, then,” she replied, nodding slightly. She hadn’t been much taller than Kyo when she carried Die, but even the few inches would make a difference when his stomach was larger. She felt for him and what he would have to go through. Surely, Die was serious about taking care of Kyo and the baby, but even that compassion wasn’t enough for him to empathize with the often not-so-subtle pains of pregnancy.
“Yeah… I guess enjoy it while it lasts?” Sighing heavily, he shook his head. He didn’t really know what to do. Sure, he wanted it and would take care of it with Die, but he knew he was still young and naive. There was still so much he didn’t know. He was so close to dropping out of school if it hadn’t been for the homeschooling option.
“You will,” she assured. Her gaze went from the boy and then to her son, that comment intended for both of them. She suspected that Kyo could have another baby, but she doubted that any other pregnancy would have as much of an emotional impact on them as this one would.
“Thanks. I really hope so… It’s just, I don’t know what to do when it gets here and all of those things.” School and real life were two completely different things, so he didn’t know what would happen. The visit lasted for a while, all of them talking and the mood getting lighter. However, when the topic about Kyo’s own family was broached, he froze. He stammered and tried to think of something to say, anything, but nothing came out.
“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to,” Die’s mother said. The way the boy hesitated and appeared so uneasy told her more than enough. If he didn’t want to bring it up, he didn’t have to say anything.
“Thanks.” He repeated and gave an uneasy smile. Giving a small yawn, he shook his head and looked at a clock. They had been there for a few hours, mostly Die catching up with his mother and Kyo sitting quietly and learning new things about the redhead. A few different things from Kyo that he had never told Die before were told as well, giving the redhead a few more things to learn about him as well.
“Are you getting tired?” Die asked. It was easy enough for Kyo to get worn out lately and the kid took frequent naps to accommodate his increased weariness. “I think I should be getting Kyo home,” Die said to his mother as he rode from his chair. She nodded at him, smiling and giving both him and Kyo a tight hug before permitting them to leave.
On the ride home, Die reflected on the visit. Things may not have been as polished or easy as he would have hoped, but he was thankful that they at least had one person in their corner. Glancing over to where Kyo was leaning with his head against the window, Die knew that any support would help and he was thankful for that.
Kyo had managed to pass out during the trip home, feeling very exhausted now. It was a taxing day, once again, and all he wanted to do when he got home was take a nap. Sleep sounded wonderful and a nap would make everything feel better and all of those depressive feelings dissipate.
