Kaoru woke up in high spirits next night. He rearranged the meeting with the band earlier, because he didn’t want to wait. He wanted to give Kyo this present as soon as possible. So he took a shower, got dressed and got ready for the meeting. But as he climbed down the stairs to the living room, he saw Toshiya sitting on the sofa and it seemed like he was crying.
“Toshiya, what is wrong?”
Toshiya glanced at Kaoru and Kaoru saw that he was very upset.
“I got into a fight with Miyavi” Toshiya uttered, looking very sad. “Oh, Kaoru… please, don’t leave me alone right now!”
“But I have a meeting with the band” Kaoru said, looking worried. “Where’s Shinya and Die?”
“I don’t know! Probably out feeding.”
Kaoru looked at the clock on the wall and at Toshiya.
“You can go with me if you promise to be quiet and invisible.”
Toshiya nodded, standing up.
“I’m sorry, Kaoru, but I just really cannot be alone right now.”
“It’s ok, just stop crying, Totchi” Kaoru smiled. “I will keep you company for tonight.”
“Thank you, Kaoru” Toshiya smiled a bit, took his coat and followed Kaoru.

Shinya and Die were both walking silently in the streets, still full of people. They both were wearing thick coats, because the weather was getting worse and worse every day. Die had a big red scarf around his neck.
“What will we say to Kaoru when next night he senses our smell in the whore’s room?” Die asked turning a bit to Shinya.
“I don’t think he will, Die. We’ll spend there only an hour or so, and our smell will disappear until tomorrow night.”
Die nodded thoughtfully. They walked in silence for some time when Shinya suddenly stopped.
“I think it’s this house” Shinya pointed at a simple two-story house with rented flats. The neighborhood was not the best, but apparently the rent was low. Die sneered in disgust.
“How on earth anyone can live here?” he eyed the house in displeasure. Shinya turned to look at Die.
“Daisuke, just remember – I do all the talking.”
“I know, Shin-chan. You have told me this four times already” Die grinned and pecked Shinya on the lips unexpectedly. Shinya blinked in surprise and furrowed his eyebrows.
“This is not a game, Die. This is very serious. So please, concentrate. And don’t scare the human. You’ve been trapped with him in a cave and I am pretty sure he has a very clear memory of your time together. So he will feel less threatened by me than you and might be more willing to hear us out.”
“I still think the whore will just ignore all our warnings. We should just… make him disappear. Kaoru will never know.”
Shinya looked Die in the eyes, a very serious expression on his face. The night was dark. There were black clouds in the sky blocking the last source of light. In this darkness only Die’s eyes were seen, shinning with some kind of unearthly light.
“And what if he will, Die? Do you think Kaoru will just forget him if he will disappear one night? And finally, Kisaki wanted him at some point in the past, so we cannot harm him. And that’s final.”
Die sighted and turned to look at the windows of the house.
“Tell me finally, Shinya…” Die whispered, looking at one particular window on the second floor that still had a light on. Shinya sighted and looked at the window as well.
“I do not want to name it… I am so afraid that I might be right…”
“I think it’s already too late, Shinya.”
“You think so? Oh God…” Shinya looked at Die his eyes looking scared. Die turned to look at Shinya his face bearing serious expression.
“He wouldn’t be going here every night. He wouldn’t be spending all his money for the whore. He wouldn’t stop spending time with his family just to be with him for sex. I think Kaoru… I think Kaoru is… very found of him” Die finished, unable to say ‘love’, but knowing Shinya could easily guess what he wanted to say.
“Why on earth this whore?” Shinya said, his voice heavy with sadness. “Why the whore that Kisaki wanted initially?”
Die just caressed Shinya’s hand with his palm looking at his lover affectionately. He knew this was very serious. It was getting serious with every night. It was no longer a mystery what Kaoru wanted that he had to let Kisaki fuck him in exchange. Kaoru wanted a permission from Kisaki to fuck the whore.
“Let’s get going, Shin-chan. We don’t have all night.”
Shinya nodded and followed Die. He had a clearer sense of how the whore smelled, so it was easier for Die to track him down. Soon they were standing in front of the flat’s door on the second floor. Shinya sighted and knocked twice on it.
The shuffling inside could be heard immediately and soon the eager footsteps approached the door. It swung open to reveal the human. He was in his tracksuit pants and a simple t-shirt. A small smile on his face. But it immediately was wiped off his face as he saw who was standing in the corridor.
Die didn’t wait for anything else. He pushed the doors open and let Shinya come in. Then he stepped inside as well and closed the door behind himself. Kyo looked utterly shocked and scared. He could just stare at the two newcomers. The only light in the flat was a lamp in Kyo’s bedroom. The small corridor was sinking in half-light.
“My name is Shinya” Shinya spoke up, looking at Kyo. “I assume you remember Die” he motioned to Die with his head. “We came to talk to you. We are not going to harm you in any way.”
Kyo was still just standing there, looking scared and Shinya sensed that Die was losing his patience already.
“Were could we go to sit comfortably and talk?” Shinya asked and Kyo finally seemed to make himself to respond.
“In the kitchen” he uttered. He turned and went to the kitchen. He lit on the light and sat at the table. The two vampires did the same. Kyo couldn’t make himself look at Die. He was so scared of him. The Shinya guy looked very kind and harmless, but as Kyo knew he was not human and he was Die’s friend, it meant he wasn’t anything near what he looked. Kyo shifted on the chair not knowing what to do. He really couldn’t understand why they came here and how they found him.
“I will be blunt” Shinya spoke again, looking Kyo in the eyes. Something in Shinya’s look suggested to Kyo that he couldn’t stare at the floor even if he wanted it so badly.
“We came here to warn you – stay away from Kaoru.”
Shock was clearly visible on Kyo’s face for the second time at the same night. Shinya put his hands on the table still looking Kyo straight in the eyes.
“It is only for your own good, boy, believe me.”
“My name is Kyo” Kyo managed to say.
“The fuck we care about your name!” Die sneered and Kyo shrunk in his seat.
“Die” Shinya scolded and Die leaned back in the chair again. He needed to be more patient.
“It’s only for your good, Kyo” Shinya repeated.
“But it’s he who’s coming here! Not the other way around!” Kyo tried desperately.
“And what have you done to make him stop from coming?”
“I have begged him to leave me alone, I swear!” tears were at Kyo’s eyes already. He didn’t want to deal with more vampires. He didn’t want to be in danger because Kaoru chose to fuck him every night. He never wanted any of this. So why everyone thought he did?
“Then you didn’t try hard enough” Shinya said sternly.
“I did! I begged him, but he just didn’t listen! He found me in the park and fucked me even though I said I didn’t want to do it! After that I stopped going to the park because I didn’t want to see him ever again! But he still found me! He came here, in my flat. And he fucked me again. He never listened to my pleas! Do you think I would have ever agreed to that on my free will?!”
Shinya barely managed to keep his hands steady. He felt that Die was also tense. Their biggest fear was confirmed.
“What do you feel about him still coming to you now?” Shinya asked. “What do you feel for Kaoru?”
Kyo looked very confused for a moment and then suddenly very nervous.
“I… well, he’s… he’s never treated me badly after the first two times… I quite enjoy his company now… I mean… he’s gentle, always tries to please not only himself but me as well… And I don’t have to go to the park any more…”
Kyo stopped there, at a loss of what to say anymore.
“So you live off comfortably on Kaoru’s money?” Die asked.
“No! I save all the money.”
“For what?” Die spat the words out.
“I want to study” Kyo said silently, thinking how stupid and unbelievable it might sound to the two immortal vampires.
Shinya and Die were silent for a while and Kyo finally lifted his eyes to look at them again. His eyes were so sad and pleading, that for a moment Shinya felt sorry for the human. He just managed to be at the wrong place on the wrong time. Perhaps in other circumstances he would have been a best companion for Kaoru, but now…
“Listen, Kyo” Shinya said and even leaned forward over the table. “Me and Die, and Toshiya of course with Miyavi, we all care only about Kaoru’s well being. And his well being is at stake now as long as he will keep coming to you.”
“But there’s nothing I can…”
“Listen to me now” Shinya interrupted him. “Kaoru might be in danger, but he’s not in as much danger as you are. We care only about Kaoru. But if you want to be happy and alive, you should also care about Kaoru not seeing you anymore. And it’s not that Kaoru might become hungry and kill you. He wouldn’t do that. That at least is very clear to me now. There’s different danger for you, Kyo, and it has a name – Kisaki.”
Shinya could see what effect Kisaki’s name made to Kyo and he felt a bit calmer. At least Kyo was already scared shitless of Kisaki.
“Let me tell you a story, Kyo, and you will understand everything. It of course would be easier for us to just kill you and Kaoru would be free. But we can’t. Because Kisaki might still change his mind someday and want to find you. And then we’d have to explain ourselves as why did we touch you.”
Shinya made a pause trying to gather his thoughts and think of where to start.
“How do you think, Kyo, how old is Kisaki?”
Kyo looked puzzled at Shinya, then at Die and shrugged.
“Make a guess” Shinya asked, even smiling a bit.
“Old” Kyo mumbled, feeling stupid. He had no idea even how old was Kaoru.
“Die is the youngest of us. He’s 107. I’m 178 years old. Kaoru’s our oldest – he’s 342 years old.”
Kyo tried not to look too stunned at hearing this. He had to expect something like that.
“So what do you think how old is Kisaki? 500 years old? 800 years old? A thousand years old?”
Shinya looked at Kyo closely and leaned in his seat.
“Not even close to that” he said. “Kisaki might have been born in Egypt Empire.”
Kyo couldn’t help but open his mouth in surprise for a silent gasp. He couldn’t even count how many years was that.
“The older vampire is, the more precisely he or she can determine the other vampire’s age. So far I haven’t met anyone who could tell even remotely closely how old Kisaki is. Tell me, Kyo, is Kaoru strong?”
Kyo nodded, but Shinya didn’t seem to be pleased with that.
“How strong he is, Kyo?”
“He could do whatever he wanted with me and I wouldn’t make a hair fall from his head even if I tried my hardest.”
“You can guess, I think, that vampire’s strength depends on his age as well. So try to imagine how strong Kisaki really is. What you experienced in the cave… well, let’s say Die named it as a bored teasing. Kisaki never showed to you even close of what power he has. So that means that me, being 178 years old, could do absolutely nothing to harm Kisaki in any way. I could not outpower him in strength. I could never possess such perfect skills in tracking humans or other vampires as Kisaki can. I have no knowledge of vampire’s skills and possibilities, of how we die or are born, of what happens if we tried to eat food and so on. Kisaki never shares this kind of information with us, because this would mean giving us more power.”
“Can’t you ask other old vampires?” Kyo asked.
“Other vampires? How many of us do you think there are? Barely any! The oldest one I’ve met outside home was 582 years old. There barely are very old vampires anymore. It’s very hard to survive in such a modern, technology-filled world.
There’s a rumor going about that… that Kisaki might be one of the very first vampires on earth… And there certainly aren’t anymore like him. Everyone we meet sense Kisaki on us immediately and just flee away. They don’t want to fall into Kisaki’s power. Because Kisaki can do anything he wants. Anything. He can even kill other vampires, which is number one crime in our world. You can easily sense other vampire’s blood on the killer’s hands and would be executed for such a crime. But believe me, no one would even want to know how many of us Kisaki has killed. There’s no point in knowing.
I should perhaps tell you why me, Die, Kaoru and Toshiya are so dependant on Kisaki. The answer is simple – Kisaki has turned us and we belong to him. We cannot take a piss without his permission. He knows everything we do.
It all started with Kaoru. He was Kisaki’s first. Of course, Kisaki had to have others, but when Kaoru was turned, he was the only one Kisaki had and lived with. We have theories of what might have happened to Kiskaki’s other companions, but we not really want to know. The same might happen to us someday and we’re really lucky we’ve been living so comfortably with him up to this point.
Kaoru was in Kisaki’s grip for 121 years. Kaoru never talks about these years, but we can guess it was bad. He existed just so Kisaki would be pleased. He killed what Kisaki told him to kill. He let Kisaki fuck him. He entertained Kisaki. For 121 years.
Then Kisaki took in Toshiya and enjoyed toying with him for 43 years. He got bored of Toshiya quite quickly comparing with Kaoru. Then it was me.”
Shinya stopped talking for a moment. He flinched as he felt Die’s hand on his own and continued.
“Kisaki had me for 56 years. I whish I could erase these years from my mind. This was my payment for all my sins, for all my family’s sins and for all my relative’s sins. I have never felt so helpless and scared and miserable than I’ve been for these 56 years. But then Kisaki just let me go. One night he got up and said that I can do as I please. He didn’t want me anymore.
In our opinion, he kept me and Toshiya for such a short time for a particular reason. Because he never fancied us as much as he fancied Kaoru.
In 1877 we met Miyavi. He was a lonely vampire without a family. His creator abandoned him and he was alone. We met him and he was so carefree and scatterbrained that he didn’t care about Kisaki. He’s 133 years old after all. He’s still young and naïve. He and Toshiya immediately fell in love. Toshiya cried an ocean before he finally braced himself to go to Kisaki and ask if he and Miyavi could be together. He was even afraid to make love to Miyavi until then. But Kisaki surprisingly didn’t care. He let them hook up. I’ve never seen Toshiya so ecstatic as that day. He was so happy…
11 years later Kisaki got bored of me and let me be free. We all became even closer since then. And 44 years later I met Daisuke… He was a human when I saw him. I was looking for a dinner and I saw him all alone at night sitting on the beach watching the sea. I came up to him wanting only to have a nice dinner at the beach, but when he turned to look at me I found myself having a conversation with him instead of drinking his blood. This still is a total mystery for me. I barely can recollect anything from that night. It’s like a blurred dream in my memory now. All I know is that something in Die’s smile made me want to hear his voice. And after hearing his voice I wanted to touch him even at least with my fingertips. Then to touch his cheek. Then to feel the warmth radiating from his body and warming my cold one.
We agreed to meet next time and it all started. And after some time I finally had to admit that I fell in love with human. You can’t imagine how horrible it was for me to admit that. I never told anybody. I was afraid that not even Kaoru could understand me and he was the oldest of us. I was torn in between my nature and Die’s wonderful smiles.
Die was very brave and kissed me already when we met for the forth time. Soon we started making out and later made love. And I couldn’t stop thinking how badly I wanted him to be with me all the time. I was running out of excuses of why we couldn’t meet at day time. I made up some bullshit about a horrible and responsible job and he bought it.
When we met, Die was 29 years old. An infant comparing to my age. But he was what I never was – funny, outgoing, witty and plainly charming. And so beautiful. We were dating for more than two years when Die asked me to move in with him.
The fairytale ended. I had to make a decision. So after thinking hard I decided to tell him the truth. At that point everyone else knew I had someone. I spent most of my nights with Die. Kaoru warned me to be careful. Toshiya just made some sex-related remark, but I had to make the final decision. So I told Die who I really was.
Then it was a dark period in my life again. After I finally made Die believe my story, he refused to see me. Much have happened between us. Many hurtful things were said. Mistakes done. But finally I found Die at the beach, in the same place we met for the first time and he just looked at me looking worn out and tired and said how much he missed me.
And he made a decision. He wanted to be with me. Forever. However long that forever would be.
And then, being scared to death, I went to Kisaki.”
Shinya stopped for a moment again to gather his thoughts.
“All I can tell you is that finally Kisaki agreed to help me turn Die in the end, if things turned out bad. And they did, and without Kisaki’s help in the end, Die would have died. But he’s here, because Kisaki let him be here. Because he doesn’t care about me being with Die. He doesn’t care about Toshiya being with Miyavi. But he does care about Kaoru’s affairs…
Kaoru’s been free for 221 years. Do you think he wanted to be lonely for all this time? There were 4 vampires he met during this time. He was interested in them. Not only sexually, but also sentimentally. But all the four after some point of dating vanished from Kaoru’s life leaving him heartbroken. Kaoru couldn’t understand why others left him. It hurt him a lot.
But it wasn’t like that. They left him because Kisaki made them leave. I’ve met only the last guy. He was insanely handsome. He was elegant, refined, had great manners, played piano, was very smart and witty, and sexy and just plainly perfect. Kaoru managed to fall for him very quickly, but the guy just disappeared. I saw him the night he was quickly packing his belongings. I didn’t need to ask him why he was doing it. His face and both arms were burnt with acid.”
Kyo gasped, feeling weaker and weaker in his legs.
“He said as much as he liked Kaoru, he valued his life more. And he said that he had to rethink his feelings for Kaoru when Kisaki ‘visited’ him. He said he was lucky Kisaki hasn’t killed him, but ‘just’ disfigured his face and hands forever, making him look horrible. He was very sorry for me and Kaoru. He was sorry we belonged to Kisaki – the oldest vampire on earth. And he didn’t want to be anywhere near Kisaki, especially when he had feelings for Kaoru – the one Kisaki wanted himself.
These are his words, but I believe them to be true. He fled away to save his life. Were he younger or more cocky, or had he said anything that Kisaki didn’t like, he might have as well be dead.
We agreed not to tell Kaoru that Kisaki was making all his potential lovers leave him. How could we do that? How could we say to him that he could never have a lover and be loved because Kisaki didn’t want anybody else near him. As soon as it was becoming even remotely serious, Kisaki immediately interrupted and made things go his way.
And now you, Kyo… Kaoru spends too much time with you. He fancies you too much… Kisaki could just kill you and we wouldn’t care, but he might as well be unhappy with Kaoru. He might hurt him… And we cannot let this happen. You must leave Kaoru now as nothing happened yet.”
“But what’s happening between us… it’s just sex… He’s always paying for it and there’s nothing more but sex…”
“Is it?”
“Yes” Kyo nodded, feeling sick in his stomach. “I am not in love with Kaoru.”
Shinya felt like crying for a moment. This human, this whore, felt nothing for Kaoru when poor Kaoru put all his hopes for happiness in him.
“But Kaoru is very found of you… And Kisaki will soon find it out. That is, if he doesn’t know yet… And he will first go to you, Kyo. So you must make Kaoru forget the way to your home for your own sake.”
Silence fell in the room. Kyo tried to grasp and deal with all the information he heard. It was too scary and too horrible. And he didn’t want to know any of this. He didn’t want to be in such a danger just because Kaoru fancied his company in his eternal life.
Kyo couldn’t stop tears coming out of his eyes. He took a cigarette with his shaky fingers and lit it.
“Why can’t you say Kaoru to stop coming here? He would listen to you!”
“Haven’t you been listening?” Die spoke. “We can’t tell Kaoru that Kisaki doesn’t want him to ever find a lover. And you’ll keep your mouth shut! We never were here and you know nothing! You just want Kaoru to stop seeing you!”
“You’re just trying to scare me! I’m no threat to Kisaki! I’m a human, I sell my body to earn money. And compared to your lives, I will soon die and Kaoru will forget all of this. I am no threat to any of you, and especially Kisaki!”
“Why are you so stubborn? Why can’t you just leave?”
“Because I have nowhere to go! I’d have to start anew and it’s very hard. I don’t want to waist money I worked so hard for! I just want to live my life! Earn my money and go to study! And then maybe someday get a decent job and just be happy! I don’t want any of this bullshit!”
“But you’re already into shit very deep, so you have to deal with it” Die said.
“Why are you so stubborn?” Shinya asked. “You said you don’t love Kaoru, so why can’t you at least try to do something for him to leave you?”
“I didn’t say I won’t try! I’m just saying he won’t listen and I won’t be able to make him change his mind. He never listens when I say for him to stop or leave me!”
Shinya sighted and stood up.
“Well then, you’ll have to try as hard as you can and then even harder. Because on that depends your life and well being.”
Die stood up again and gave Kyo the last look. Kyo cringed in his seat under Die’s stern gaze. Then both vampires silently went out and after a moment it seemed like they never were here in the first place.
