Days blended into weeks, weeks into months, and still no word from Serene. Her two-way still sat where she left it, collecting dust. She left most of her personal items at the store, but her most valued possessions she left with Cy.
Cy. She cried herself to sleep most nights and wandered her way through the days. Poly tried to take care of her, but she only managed to push herself away. A part of Cyanide still blamed Poly for Serene's sudden disappearance.
Poly understood. In truth, she still blamed herself. If it hadn't been for her behavior, Mad's outburst would have never happened and she may not have left. In her eyes, it was all her fault. But she couldn't dwell on that. She had work to do.
Most of Poly's days were spent learning to walk again. Fun Ghoul and Kobra Kid wouldn't always be there to steer her around. She had to learn to find her way on her own. Doc had found a cane for her to use every day. It became a tremendous help during her day-to-day activities. She no longer tripped over chairs, or ran into doorways.
But simply moving around without falling wasn't the only adjustment she needed to make. Dr. Death Defying had been right when he said she'd be useless on the battlefield. She needed to relearn to shoot. To help her with this arduous task, Kobra Kid and Fun Ghoul jury-rigged a system of moving mannequins. Listening to fabric and the mechanical movements, Poly would fire in the direction she thought the mannequin had moved.
Only one other person could stay in the training room while Poly learned to shoot. In addition to operating the mannequins, their job was to make sure Poly didn't hurt herself. They also let her know if her shot was a hit or a miss and help adjust her stance accordingly. Progress was slow, but she'd never let herself give up.
Typically, Fun Ghoul or Jet Star would be the ones to help with Poly's training. On the rare occasion they weren't available, Party would step in and help. They never talked more than necessary. Party would give her advice and Poly would provide what little feedback she could manage. Mostly, Party would observe.
He didn't find Poly as irritating as he did when they first met. He did notice several significant changes, though. Her temper had softened. She didn't fume and boil like she did when she stormed out into the Zones. She spoke to Party more often as the days passed. She didn't just ask questions; she told stories. Also, she didn’t brood in silence when she made a mistake. She picked herself up and moved on. Mad's disappearance, it seemed, became the catalyst for Poly's awakening.
The biggest change, though, could be felt in the store. Mad had been spending most of her days and nights there ever since the attack on her station. When she wasn't there, she stayed at the bunker. With her gone, there was no one to keep trade flowing. Electric Fantasy took up a semi-permanent residence, to the surprise of the rest of the killjoys. On the bright side, the number of female patrons increased daily. Most went out of their way to find information and supplies to trade. Anything to get to talk to Fantasy.
But it wasn't the same. Mad had never thought of herself as important, but her presence- and lack thereof- was felt by the entire group. Every killjoy she'd spoken to, helped, or even made a trade with felt a loss when she left. The chatter may have increased when Fantasy took over, but the overwhelming sense of community fled with his predecessor.
On the outside, Drac activity remained at a standstill and tensions were never higher among the killjoys. Each Zone was left reeling from the abrupt halt in Drac movement with no explanation to be found. Entire outposts had been gutted overnight. Supply convoys dwindled to almost nothing. Only a few trucks carrying the most basic essentials- food and medication.
Dr. Death Defying , Party Poison, and Jet Star wracked their brains for any explanation. "I hate to say it, but we need her."
"Jet, we've been over this already. Mad left us. She's not coming back. We have to do this on our own."
Party sighed. "No, D. Jet's right." He crinkled up the map they'd laid out on the table and threw it at the far wall. "None of this shit is going to make any sense without her."
"We've figured Drac activity out before," Dr. D interjected. "Without her. Or did you forget that she wasn't here the first three years?"
"We haven't forgotten, D." Jet's quiet voice soothed everyone's ruffled feathers. "But there's something about Mad that makes it easier. Ideas flow and bounce around better when she's in the conversation. She has a way of clearing the murkiness to 'bring out the plot,' as she would say."
Death growled. "We're not trying to write a story, Jet."
"We're not, but he does have a point." Death rolled his eyes, but motioned for Party to continue. "Mad is a little crazy and aloof, I'll grant you. However, what she lacks in stability, she makes up for in creative thinking. In her own twisted way, she can make sense of the craziest things. Her… unusual logic… does have its own way of bringing the most… possibilities… out in the open. I know it never made sense to any of us, but you can't deny that her crazy way of thinking has actually helped more times than not." Dr. D growled and sat back in his chair without another word. Party knew he had him beat. With a mischievous smirk, he added, "That, and Korse would make the perfect comic book villain."

The wall of monitors in the Battery City SCARECROW Unit were alive with activity. Korse left instructions to monitor Zone 2 at mid day. Camera flies had been sent to monitor every inch of the Zone. Nothing was to be overlooked. For hours they'd waited, and finally it happened.
Near the burning remains of a gas station deep in Zone 2, a cluster of flies hovered over the corpses of Battery City Security Forces personnel. Their masks had been riddled with holes. Korse would be so pleased to hear that his experiments were improving.

"Bleach! Get the hell out of here!" Violet Mercy screamed. Electric Fantasy left the two alone when he took over the store in Zone 6 and now they were being overrun. Dracs came from every direction in numbers that bordered on the extreme.
Bleach Warfare bounced between leaving and staying. "You can't fight them off on your own!"
Violet let out a guttural scream as she plowed through three Dracs that threatened to bring Bleach down. "I'm not trying to fight them off! I'm trying to get you out of here! You need to warn the others!" She blasted three more Dracs and shoved Bleach into their corvette. "Get the hell out of here! Now!"
The engine roared as Bleach fired her up. He squashed the pedal to the floor, bowling over everything in his path. Dust flew and Mercy fought on. The last thing Bleach saw in the rearview was Mercy being swallowed in a sea of white.
A/N: Okay, so this is another filler chapter… sort of. I swear, it will pick up later, but I felt the need to slow things down a little. I loved all the action, but I think even the killjoys said they needed a breather. Oh wait… They don't get a breather. Hehe! Just to let you know, I do have a lot of shit going on right now. Our landlord had to raise the rent so, we have to find a new place. Right now, we're packing with no place to go. He's letting us stay until we find a place, but no one wants to rent to a family of four adults with six animals for the price we're looking for. We've even been looking in places that are too far for us to drive. Honestly, the only reason I have this chapter done is because of my boyfriend. No, it's not what you think… not really. He's not reading these and he's not forcing me to write. I don't think he really cares whether I finish it, as long as I'm happy with it. No, he did something absolutely fantastic. Anyone who's also a Black Veil Brides fan should know that the Wretched and Divine Ultimate Edition just came out and that they were offering a limited edition box set. Well, guess who's boyfriend bought her one… Yeah. I just watched Legion of the Black and BOOM! It's like a fricken flood light exploded in my head. I haven't had one of those moments since Danger Days came out and I first got the idea for Senseless. Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that, yes the ideas are flowing again, but there is still the chance that I'll hit a major dry spell. They like to coincide with my depressions, so I'm trying to keep my chin up. It's a lot harder than it looks and sometimes I think my Zoloft is making things worse more than better sometimes… Anyway, do let me know if I'm keeping you guys on your toes. I do try. And your opinions give me something to look forward to in the next chapter. I don't tell you guys that enough. I do love your opinions. I don't always use them, but they do make me feel better.
