When Night Falls(Pt12)language
Sav quickly masked the pain in his face and tried not to limp when he came into the kitchen to see Joe, Nick and Amber sitting at the table. Taking a glass from the cabinet, he made sure the robe was tightly secured so it would cover the bandage on his leg before he joined them at the table. Pouring the blood wine in his glass, he took a sip and sat it down. But his feeble attempts to hide the pain and bandages did not go unnoticed by Nick.
“That shower felt good.”
“Did he say anything to you Rick?” Joe asked softly.
Looking up at him, Sav could tell that he had been crying again.
“Daddy.” Amber reached for his hand, giving it a gently squeeze.
“No…h..he couldn’t.” Sav ran his fingers through his hair. “I really don’t want to talk about it Joe.”
“I want to know what happened after the phone line went dead.”
“Amber did the flowers get ordered?” Sav asked, trying to change the subject.
“Yes. Everything has been taken care of.”
“You’re not going to tell me?”
“No, its better left unsaid.” Sav went to stand and quickly sat back down, the fast movement causing him to flinch.
“I have a right to know, he was my son.”
Sav stood up, ignoring the pain in his leg this time. “Damnit Joe!” he started to leave the room, “Remember Thomas for the way he looked before, not the way he…just drop it OK.”
“Richard.”
Sav came to a dead stop. Groaning inwardly at Nick’s use of his full name, knowing that he rarely used it, unless it was necessary too. Now was one of those times. “What?”
Nick indicated at the chair he just vacated, “Could you please have a seat?”
“What for? So that you can pick my brain?”
“No,” Nick turned to Joe then. “Neither will you.”
“Who the fuck are you to tell me what to do?”
“I’m…nobody.” Nick replied calmly.
“Goddamn right about that.” Joe huffed.
Sav flopped back in his chair, blowing out a frustrated, yet painful breath.
“Perhaps in the future, when Thomas’ death isn’t so raw, he will share what he went through.” Nick suggested, while he pushed the bottom of the silk robe open to reveal the tightly wrapped bandage on Sav’s leg. Nick glanced up at him and started to unwrap the bandage.
Sav stilled his hands. “It’s not that bad.” he softly told him.
“Then why do you have it wrapped?” Joe asked from across the table.
Sav rolled his eyes. “Fine.” he quickly unwound the bandage and tossed it on the table. “There see, its hardly bleeding at all now.”
“What do you mean now?” Nick asked as he gently probed his fingers around the scar tissue and small jagged hole on the inside of his thigh.
“It was bleeding wor….Oooww!!” Sav yelled. His reflex at the sharp pain caused him to smack Nick in the head. “That fucking hurt…leave it…ow…goddamnit Nick…leave it alone!” Sav pushed him away.
“Are you sure you got all of the wood pieces out?” Joe asked coming around the table for a closer look.
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“Oh that looks…really bad.” Joe went to touch it and Sav stopped his hand in midair.
“If you had removed all of it, the wound would have healed by now.” Nick informed him as he tried again to feel.
“Nooo…it always takes longer to heal now when ever I get hurt. Well I haven’t been hurt this bad since I was sick.”
Nick held his gazed a moment, “Did you take any blood from Thomas...was his heart stopped?”
Sav swung his eyes to see Joe intently staring at him, then darted them to another part of the room, “I..I know what the blood of the dead will do. I’m not that stu…” he felt the firm squeeze of Nick’s fingers on his uninjured leg, “I...It wasn’t that much.” he softly exhaled.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Joe swipe his hands over his face, then new lines of worry etched on his fore head.
”That may be true, given your illness, and what you took from Thomas, this should have already healed more.” Nick started as he leaned forward a bit to resume examining the wound. “Perhaps we should reopen the wound to make sure you…”
”Oh no you are not!” Sav abruptly stood. “It’ll heal on its own. Leave it alone...leave me alone.”
“It does look pretty bad Uncle Sav. Maybe you should let Nick have a better look at it.”
Sav spun his head toward Amber. “He already had a better look at it." he replied sarcastically.
Amber’s smile was not very reassuring, ”To be on the safe side.”
Sav found himself shoved back in the chair by Joe. “Sit down.”
“The hell I will.” Sav huffed and flew back to his feet.
“Yes…you…are.” Joe said evenly and pushed him back down. “Stop acting like a baby and let Nick have a better look at it.”
“I don’t need to have him look or touch or cut to find something that isn’t there.” Sav glared up at Joe and once again tried to stand.
“If you don’t stay in that chair, I will have Nick punch you like he did me.” Joe held him in place with his hand.
“What!” Sav yelled, twisting in the chair. “I’ll fucking kill him. When did he dooo…AAAHHH!!!” Sav reared his arm back and slammed his fist into Nick’s face. The force of his punch sent him rolling a few feet away. “What the…that fucking bastard cut me…” Sav stared at his heavily bleeding leg. “Where did you get the knife!?” He looked up at Nick as he stood up, wiping the blood from his cheek. The look he saw in his eye gave him pause to stay in his seat.
“I went to get it when you were arguing with Joe. Now, you will sit in that chair and not move.”
”But…”
Nick threw his hand up to silence him. Kneeling in front of him again, he began to probe the wound, wiping blood away every few seconds. Sav gripped the edges of the chair, he jerked when Nick hit a very sensitive place. Finally satisfied that he felt nothing after few minutes, he cleaned the wound with water that Amber brought over.
“I get to break your jaw now right?” Sav told him between clenched teeth. “I told you there wasn’t anything there. But did you listen? NO!”
“OK, Sav you can stop whining now,” Joe started. “We should have listened to you. Sorry.”
“Damn right you should have.” Sav grumbled, dropping his head on top of his arms on the table. A soft groan escaped his throat as Nick gently spread his saliva over the wound to help heal, then wrapped it tightly.
Joe stepped up behind him, placing his hands on his shoulder and worked his fingers over the tight muscles. “You might want to check the ones on his side also.”
Nick glanced up at him. “What other ones?”
Rolling his head to face Nick, Sav told him, “A few of those bullets that whizzed by, come a little to close.” Sitting up, he untied his robe and pushed it aside, pointing to the angry red slashes along his lower ribs.
Nick peered closer at them and probed them with his fingers. “These are healing fine.”
“So is the other one.” Sav huffed.
Messaging his tense shoulder muscle again, Joe leaned side ways to look at him, “Are there anymore we should know about?”
“No…” Sav paused as he held Nick’s steady gaze, sighing heavily, he reluctantly pushing the robe from his shoulder to expose yet another bandage around his upper arm.
“I thought you said nothing serious?” Come Joe’s concerned voice from behind him.
“I didn’t want you to worry...as you always do...so I kept it to myself.”
Taking notice that the gash wasn’t healing like it should, Nick went through the same procedure as he did with the leg.
“Those will heal a little faster now.” Nick replied and reached up to run his fingers over the deep bruising on Sav’s cheek.
Sav slapped his hand away and glared at him. “Stop it.”
Joe leaned over him to whisper in his ear.
“I just might do that.” Sav mumbled his reply.
“Come on then, I’ll help you upstairs.” Joe was about to help him stand when the phone rang.
“I’ll get it.” Amber said and went over to pick it up. “Hello...hello..” Pulling it away from her ear to stare at it, “There wasn’t anyone there.” She hung up it up. “Dad, do you need any help getting him upstairs?”
“We can manage.” Joe slid his arm around Sav’s waist. “I’ll probably just carry him.”
“OK. I’m going to check on everyone, then be in my room if you need anything.” Amber kissed them both on the cheek. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight sweetheart.” Joe squeezed her hand
“Night.” Sav grumbled.
“Oh Uncle Sav it’s not that bad.” Amber told him.
“Easy for you to say, your leg isn’t on fire.”
Amber darted her eyes to her father. “Well think of…other things.”
“Now is not the time for that.”
“Since when?” Amber smiled and quickly left the room.
Nick was busy cleaning up the blood from the floor, a croaked smile on his face.
“What are you smiling about?” Sav asked when he noticed it.
“Oh nothing.” Nick replied and stood up.
Joe led him to the back stairs. “Ignore him.”
“I don’t want to go up those stairs.”
Joe couldn’t help but chuckle at him. “OK, we’ll go to the living room.”
Turning around, they headed for the living room. The phone rang as they passed by it. Joe stopped and grabbed it from the hook. “Hello.”
“Mr. Elliott, how nice of you to answer the phone…this time.”
Joe frowned, not recognizing the voice. “You called a few minutes ago.”
“Yes. I believe that was your lovely daughter Amber that answered.”
“Who is this?”
“Who I am is irrelevant, but what I have is.”
“And what is it you have?”
“I see that your lover arrived with your dead son. Such a tragic way to die….is it not?”
“The tragedy will be your death when I…”
“Of course...” the man cut him off. “…I had no idea that young Richard was so brave. Ah yes…a missed opportunity to take them both out, but, I assure you, his time will come. My men will not fail next time.”
Joe darted his eyes to Sav. “Who is this?” he repeated.
“Tell me Mr. Elliott. Are all of your loved ones and family close to you in this time of….mourning?”
“What do you…” Joe heard the soft click as the line went dead. He hung it up, then turned to Sav and Nick, who had been intently listening to the conversation.
“He’s threatened to kill someone else close to me.” Joe said numbly. “W-who isn’t here?”
“Everyone is here Joe.” Nick told him. “He can’t get through the heavily armed guards that are surrounding the house.”
Sav’s face paled even more and the pain in his leg forgotten. “Kyle isn’t here. He’s still in…no, no h_his flight left a few hours ago…from New York.” Sav lunged for the phone, his hand shook as he tried to dial the number. He slammed his hand down to hang up and tried again. "He couldn’t fly over with me, to much business to ta...”
“Hello.” A voice groggy with sleep finally answered.
Sav visible slumped with relief. “Kyle.”
“Dad, I wasn’t expecting you to call.”
Sav pushed his fear aside. “Are you alright? Is everyone on the plane with you?”
“Yes. Beth is asleep…um…Tracy and Lily are talking to Dan. Why?”
“I had to make sure you were alright.”
”He called didn’t he?”
“Yes,” Sav rubbed his eyes. “He’s threatened everyone in the family.”
“Well, we’re all fine here. They checked the plane over very carefully before we left, so try to relax.”
“I won’t be able to do that until your plane lands and you’re safe here, where I can see you.”
“Dad, you need to rest. The past several days hav…”
”You tell Dan, that I will be calling every thirty minutes to check on all of you.” Sav quickly spoke into the phone.
“I don’t think that is necessary.”
“I do,” he shot back. “Every thirty minutes Kyle.”
”Alright.” Kyle finally agreed. If there was one thing he learned about his father after meeting him, was that he was very stubborn. “We should be landing in about five hours.”
“Joe and I will be there to pick you up,” Sav looked to him for conformation. “We’ll be there.” Sav gently replaced the phone. “They’re all fine.”
“But you are not.” Nick reached for his arm. Gently pulling him into the living room where he pushed Sav on the couch. Joe followed behind and sat beside him. “I’m going to stroll around the grounds.” Nick told them and headed for the door.
“Nick…” Sav called out to him. “He can’t get to any of us again, can he?”
“I’m taking every precaution to see that he doesn’t.” Nick smiled softly and left them alone.
The sudden urge to feel the comforting contact that only Joe could give him, Sav leaned against him. Joe wiggled a bit so that he could put his arms around him.
“If anybody can catch this bastard, it’s Nick.” Joe mumbled into his hair. He tried to push the man’s words from his mind. ‘His time will come.’ It frightened him to know that Sav maybe this man’s next target. Joe tightened his arms around him.
‘You will not win. You caught us off guard the first time with Thomas…there will not be a next time.’ Joe silently vowed to himself. He glanced to the area of the living room where he felt Thomas’ presents. ‘I won’t let him win Tommy.’
