Friday came all too quickly. I sat with my hyungs in a high-rise board room somewhere inside the Sony Entertainment building awaiting the arrivals of Lee Soo Man and our manager Choi Jin as well as some of the management staff at Sony. They were to unveil a major change in our group. Jinki sat next to me and as soon as the CEO and our managers walked in, we all stood up and bowed respectfully.
“Gentlemen! Thank you for coming in today. Please be seated…” Sony’s CEO said as he sat at the head of the table. “Now, you guys are here because there are going to be huge changes made to SHINee as a whole. I am pleased to announce that we are adding another member to the group.” Each one of us looked at each other. Adding another member? Who is it? I’m positive each one of us thinking the same thing.
“Now, this person we are adding is very fluent in English, they can sing, and dance and the best part about it is…each one of you know about this person…” Each of us were left scratching our heads, each of us clueless. “Anyone want to take a guess?”
“Um…Jay Park?” Taemin guessed.
“Nope…any other guesses?” The rest of us kind of shrugged and looked at each other. I was absolutely clueless.
“Jinki and Minho I’m surprised you didn’t guess? You’re the ones who sent your manager the video…”
My eyes widened, the answer hit me like a ton of bricks. For the love of God they were going to have Crystal join an all-male K-pop group? Were they insane? Had they lost their ever loving minds to think this was a good idea? I was genuinely worried now.
“Excuse me…if you don’t mind me asking, but are you insane?” Taemin asked, shooting the Sony Executive a look of disbelief. “She’s a woman, if you haven’t noticed? We’re an all male pop group.”
“Taemin, we know. We want to maximize your fan base, we have noticed that group fronted by a female rather than a male sell more records therefore increase profits for everyone—“
“This is bullshit…” I heard Taemin mutter under his breath. Jinki shot Taemin a look of shock as did the rest of us surprised by his outburst.
“Excuse me?” The Lee Soo Man asked, he was honestly flabbergasted at the boldness displayed by Taemin. “Care to reiterate why this is bullshit?” Taemin shook his head.
“No, never mind.”
“That’s what I thought…please continue Edgar.”
“Thank You Soo Man, upon reviewing the tapes and given the rapport that some of you have with Miss. Hammock, and also taking into mind her immense talent, we are drawing up a partnered contract with you and her…” Edgar said opening up a folder filled with five contracts. He gave the contracts to his assistant, a pretty blonde, to pass out to the rest of us as well as pens. “Please look over these contracts carefully…they will lock you in for the next 3 years.”
I was handed mine and I read over it carefully. They were drawn up in Hangul to make sure that we understood. It was way different than any contract we had ever signed. We would get a chunk of money up front as a signing bonus, and then another large sum after recording was finished. Any sales from concerts, memorabilia, album sales, merchandise, would be split 60/40 with the 60% going to us. Album sales were split 30/70. We also foot the bills of the video shoots, lodging, travel, advertising, stylists etc. The Sony and SM in a joint effort will pay for these expenses as they came up, but we would be billed later on. Either way, from the series of numbers, this would put us in a very financially secure position. I did have a couple of questions I wanted to ask however.
“I have some questions if I may ask them?”
“Sure Minho, ask away.”
“What will Crystal’s role be in our group?”
“Well, seeing as she will be the oldest, she will be the leader.”
“You can’t be serious…” Key said, shocked. “We barely know her.”
“I understand that this is a lot of information to process, but we needed someone who was actually American, we feel that you will sell a lot more and be more a success this way. We believe in this formula, and we believe that people are looking for something different. This could very well be our way to hit the masses.”
“So…when will she be coming here?” I asked, looking at Edgar the Sony Executive.
“Middle of June. We already have studio time set aside for you guys to begin recording starting in a few weeks. Ideally we’d like most of your vocals recorded by the time she gets here.”
“What about Jasmine? She’s about to start school…” I asked, looking at Edgar.
“Well that’s strictly up to Crystal, we’ll work with her with whatever arrangement she comes up with…” I nod. I sign the pages that needed my signatures before handing back the contract. Upon review that everything was signed and clear, Edgar handed me a check with my name on it for…my eyes widened at the number of zeros…
“Two…two million US dollars?” Edgar nodded.
“Welcome to Sony Entertainment Minho Choi.” Edgar said, offering his hand for a handshake and I gratefully shook it.
“Thank you…” I said, excited that I was starting a new chapter in my life. Jinki was the next to finish reading and signing the contract. Edgar gave him a check for the same amount. Key and Jonghyun had followed our lead, with Edgar handing them their checks as well. Taemin was the last one to sign his and had it to Edgar.
“Okay. Now that the contract signing is out of the way, it’s time to get to the beans of the matter.” Edgar paused before looking to Lee Soo Man. “Soo Man, I think you should take over from here.”
“Thank you.” Lee Soo Man looked at us. “Now guys, we’re taking a bit of a different approach with this as you can tell. You guys have done sexy before, but not like this…we’ve enlisted the help of Timbaland and Red-One to produce music for your new album, for right now however you’ll be starting vocal refreshers Monday and you’ll also be visiting with your music producers and style coordinators this week.” Lee Soo Man said, glancing at all of us.  “By the way, I would rather keep this between us, hush hush, I know at least one of you still contact Crystal on a regular basis, we still haven’t ironed the kinks out of this venture yet, so please keep this to yourself.” Lee Soo Man said, looking at me. I blushed and nodded.
After a bit more talking about creative ideas and what not, the meeting was adjourned.
I was about to get out of my seat to walk out of the office when I heard Jin call for Taemin and I to stay. I paused and slowly lowered myself back into my chair, Taemin did the same and Jin waited until everyone had cleared the room before opening his mouth.
“Okay, what exactly is going on with you two? You used to have a great friendship and now you seem don’t even want to be in the same room with each other?”
“Don’t be silly hyung…I love hyung…”  Taemin said, putting his arm around me.
“Taemin don’t lie. Look whatever happened during your time away you need to quash it for the sake of the band. Sony just gave you guys 12 million out of their own pocket. Do not mess this up. I will make sure you pay sorely if you do.” Jin said his eyes meeting Taemin’s. I could tell Taemin wasn’t fazed by Jin’s threats. He simply nodded. Jin waved him out. “Minho, I’m not done with you yet…” I looked at Jin. Just then a female executive came in. She was African-American in her mid-thirties with dyed blonde hair...she seemed very well put together.
“Minho! I'm Melody Asgaard, I'm in charge of Crystal's overall image within the group as well as the image of SHINee as a whole. I'm sorry I'm late Jin, my meeting ran late...I have some questions for you Minho if you don't mind answering them for me?” The woman said, offering her hand for a handshake, and I shook her hand.
I greeted Melody as I normally would. “Sure.”
“Good, let's have a seat here...” The woman sat down across from me, next to Jin. She opened a folder that had Crystal's profile picture clipped to the inside of it. It was thin compared to ours.
“Okay, you spent the most amount of time with Crystal. What’s she like? Is she pretty easy to get along with?”
“Yeah, she's pretty well liked at work, and she's got quite a few friends as well.” I said, nodding.
“Do you like her?” Melody asked, her green eyes meeting mine. I nodded. Jin looked at me with an arched eyebrow.
“We're good friends...” I elaborated looking at Melody. She looked at me, disbelief all over her face.
“Minho...do you like her more than a friend?” Melody asked her eyes meeting mine. I felt my cheeks burn with embarrassment, unsure if I should answer.
“You can tell her.” Jin said, looking at me. I drew in a deep breath.
“I love her. I'm not going to lie. I'm in love with her.” I said, confessing my feelings. I messed with a pen that was sitting in front of me, feeling a bit vulnerable now. It was obvious Jin already knew and Melody jotted this down into Crystal's file.
“Well...I have some bad news Minho. Whatever relationship you have with Crystal will probably have to go to the wayside, at least for the sake of the band. You see, the image that we're working out for Crystal...is...risque at best.”
“What do you mean by 'risque'?”
“We're talking sexualized performances Minho. I don't want you to get jealous or fights to erupt in the group because someone other than you has to perform with Crystal in a sexualized manner...”
“Why are they even portraying her like that? She can carry her own without us? Why exploit her?”
“Sex sells Minho. The sexier, and edgier a performance is, the better. We want to portray you guys as red-blooded men chasing after an equally red-blooded woman.” I already didn't like where this was going my grip on the pen tightened as I tried to control my anger.
“That's not what SHINee is about...I'm not going to expose my girlfriend to the world. I trust my band mates with her, what I don’t trust, are the fans.”
“Look, you'll still have a good message to portray, we'll make sure of that...if you want, keep your relationship, once Crystal gets here, there won't be much time for much of anything. We can't control what you do in your personal time, but if the relationship interferes with the unity of the group, we will ask you to end it, do you understand?” Melody said looking at me.
“Yes.” I said trying to extinguish the rage that was building inside me.
“Good. Now, that that's squared away...what are her favorite colors?”
“She's got several, black, white, silver, blue and purple.”
“She's not into pink I take it?”
“It's not her favorite.”
The line of questioning continued until I couldn’t give Melody exact answers anymore. She said she would also meet with Crystal as soon as she got here to make sure everything was accurate and tie up loose ends. With the meeting adjourned Jin and I were escorted out to a shuttle van where Taemin had been patiently waiting. We were driven over to the restaurant to have lunch with our hyungs before we all headed back to the hotel.
The video chats with Crystal became awkward. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her that Sony had asked us to end our relationship. I think Crystal noticed this…but didn’t say anything, at least until her birthday.

-May 21^st 2014-

Monday the 19^th was the day that it was revealed that we would be surprising Crystal with the news with a visit by all of us. By now SM knew it was Crystal’s birthday on Wednesday, and they cleared it for us to reveal that we would be coming and what week, but the actual day, time and true purpose of the visit should still be kept a secret.
“Minho, you should text Crystal and ask what time she wants to video chat tonight, we gotta do the reveal to her…isn’t today her birthday?”Jinki asked his eyes meeting mine. We had just finished a recording session and things for the album were beginning to take shape although we were only working on five songs at the moment. We were headed back to our hotel room.
“Yeah,” I said, pausing my texting session with Crystal to glance at him. My phone chimed and I glanced at it. “She’s off today. What time did you want to set up a video call?
“Any time will work. Did you get her anything other than what we gave her?”
“I sent her a card with the money inside last week. She should have gotten it yesterday or today.”
“Ah, has she gotten it yet?”
“Not sure.” I shot a look at Jinki before texting Crystal, her response was immediate. “She hasn’t checked her mail in a couple of days, she’s going to check it now.”
“We’re coming up on the hotel…” Jonghyun said, and I put my cell phone in my pocket. The van to a stop in front of the entrance to the hotel and we walked in, annd headed up to the three bedroom suite we shared. As soon as I got inside I shot a text to Crystal.
When you get a chance, please log into paltalk. I have another surprise.
Crystal responded that she would meet me there in five. I immediately let Jinki know and he rallied the troops and everyone including Taemin, were gathered in the living room with Jinki letting them know that today was Crystal's birthday. They were simply just to introduce themselves and wish her a happy birthday as Jinki and I let Crystal know about our surprise visit. We were going to be as vague as possible and let her know the general time frame but not the dates or the real reason for our visit. I grabbed my laptop in the meantime and placed it on the coffee table. I opened up Paltalk and opened a chat window by clicking on Crystal’s username. Since being here, all the guys signed up for accounts and I caught the guys chatting in the rooms in what little free time we had. Jonghyun loved the program the most and I had caught him chatting with Crystal in one of the karaoke rooms but I don’t think she realized it was him, he knew it was her because I was the one who had given him her username, but he was vague on who he was. Crystal was smart though, as she was onto him and revealed that she had a feeling it was him.
She came online a moment later and the guys all lined up behind me when I entered super-IM mode and soon as she saw my camera her reaction on my end was priceless.
“Oh my God! Hey Guys!” Crystal exclaimed excitedly, as she waved with both her hands and we did our normal introduction and Crystal was ecstatic. Then we broke out in Happy Birthday and Crystal put her hands over her mouth. When we finished we broke out in a round of applause.
“Hey Crystal? I wanted to surprise you and I guess now is the best time to do it. We’ve been granted the opportunity to come see you for a few days!”
“Oh my God! Really!?!?” I nod. “When?”
“Probably at the beginning of next month sometime, we still don’t know the exact dates.” Jinki said, convincingly lying to Crystal about the situation. The truth was, June 6-10^th were what we were cleared for. But we weren’t going to tell Crystal that, SM and Sony wanted to blindside her.
“That’s so cool you guys! Oh my God…I’m excited to see you guys now.”
“We know. The guys are excited to finally meet you.” I said, looking at her. “Hey did you receive my card?”
“Oh yeah! Sorry, I got so excited about you guys coming I completely forgot it.” Crystal said grabbing the card from somewhere off screen. With the card in hand she tore the envelop open. She grabbed the card out, which had a generic birthday cake on the front.
She opened the card and inside was $500, $200 from me, and $100 from Key, Jinki and Jonghyun. I didn't bother asking Taemin to contribute knowing how he felt about her. He agreed to sign his name to the card, and wish her a happy birthday but that was about it.
“Oh my God, Minho...you shouldn't have...”
“Read the card babe.”
Crystal nodded, and her face lit up.
"This is from all of you!?!? That's amazing thank you so much! Oh my God, this is officially the greatest birthday ever! I can't believe this. You can bet I will treasure this forever.” Crystal said, looking at the camera. Jinki, Key and Jonghyun were ecstatic to make her day, Taemin even had a smile. I really wanted to tell her everything knowing she would be over the moon but Jinki put his hand on my shoulders.
“I think it time to let her go now Minho, before you give away the true surprise.”  I knew he was right.
“Crystal, we are going to have to let you go, we have more rehearsals to go to, we hope you have a great birthday. I'm sure you'll see Minho later on tonight, the rest of us will see you next month sometime.” Jinki said, smiling at Crystal and she returned his smile.
“Of course, I'm sorry if I have kept you guys. Thank you so so much for everything. You guys have made my day really special. Thank you again!” Crystal said, and I blew her a kiss.
“I'll talk to you later on tonight. Okay?”
“Okay, have a good day you guys! Kick butt at your rehearsals.”
“We will, bye.”
“Bye!” The rest of the guys joined in, including me. Crystal waved to us before Jinki leaned forward and disconnected the chat. We didn’t really have any more rehearsals for the day but I went over some material anyway just so I could feel confident. Around midnight, I texted Crystal to join me on paltalk and she was there moments later.
"Hey Minho! Thanks for the card and everything, you guys really made my day."
"I'm glad you liked it..."
"Hey, here's a question, why have you been avoiding me?"
"Avoiding you? I wouldn't say I'm avoiding you?"
"Okay, I just feel that there's something going on that you're not telling me. Did something happen?"
"I didn't want to tell you this but, SM is asking us to end our relationship." Crystal paused, the reality of what I just said sinking in.
"Are you serious?" I nodded. "Well...fuck. This is exactly what I wanted to hear on my birthday..." Crystal added, sarcasm dripping heavily in her tone.
"I'm sorry Crystal, you asked."
"I know...what did you want to do?"
"Well they did say I could keep the relationship, but there probably wouldn't be any time once you...I mean...promotion for the album starts." I said being careful not to give away the fact that she would be joining the group. "We'll talk about it when I get there next month." Crystal nodded, and we continued our chat for another hour until we both had to go to bed.

The days flew by, between studio recording, vocal lessons and meetings with image consultants to solidify the image for the band as a whole…there was little free time. Before I knew it, the June 5^th was here. Jonghyun and I were packing and he was asking all about Crystal.
“So, what she like? Is she a flirt?”
“Um…I suppose…”
“You mean you don’t know?”
“I haven’t seen her in action, I suppose she can be flirty if given the chance.”
“How can you not know these things Minho?”
“I guess I just didn’t pay attention…” Jonghyun pat my shoulder.
“It doesn’t really matter…I’m sure I’ll like her. Everyone else seems to who have already met her.” Jonghyun said throwing some socks into his bag. “Hey, what time does our flight take off again?”
“At 6:10am.”
“That’s early. At least we’ll get there in plenty of time…how are we going to get to Crystal? We won’t have a vehicle.”
“I think she’ll be working the afternoon shift. I was going to have either you or Taemin make the call to have the hotel shuttle come pick us up…”
“Both you and I know that Taemin isn’t going to do anything like that. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to even bring him along.”
“Manager-hyung isn’t giving us a choice though hyung. You and I know bringing him along may be detrimental but then again, maybe he’ll stuff his feelings and grow up.” I said, looking at Jonghyun. He shrugged.
“I hope he does for the sake of the band, he’s been moping around a lot lately. I hope he gets over it soon.”
“Me too.” I said, my heart sinking. I missed my dongsaeng, I just wanted him back. Before this whole mess erupted and pulled us apart.
After packing we decided that it would be best to sleep, seeing as we had a flight early in the morning.
Next thing I know, my cell phone alarm jolts me awake and I wake up, not really wanting to be in the first place. I then remember today is the day I get to see Crystal, and I become excited at the thought. I make it into the bathroom before Jonghyun, making sure I look good for when I actually see her.
By the time I was nearly finished, Jonghyun was pounding at the door. I finished up and allowed Jonghyun to have the bathroom while I grabbed my flight packet containing my ticket, boarding pass, and itinerary. Dragging my luggage behind me, I walked out of the shared bedroom and I saw Jinki who passed me an apple and a protein bar. I took both items and bit into the apple.
“Mmm…thanks hyung!” Jinki nodded. Key was right behind me, Jinki handed him his breakfast. Jonghyun was next, and last was Taemin. Jinki’s phone vibrated and he talked to whoever was on the other end saying ‘Okay.’ before disconnecting.
“Our ride’s here.” Jinki said simply, shoving his phone back into his pocket. We all headed down to the lobby and got into the van which drove us to LaGuardia Airport. We go through security and Key checks his extra bag in. Just then it occurred to me.
“Hyung, you have her recording contract and check right?” Jinki nodded and patted the outside pocket on his bag.
“Yes Minho, I have it.”  I smiled. I could just imagine her surprise now. “You must be excited to see her after what? Nearly two months?”
“Yeah,”
“You haven’t told her or anything have you pabo?” Key asked, his eyes meeting mine. I shook my head.
“She has no idea we’re coming today.” Jinki smiled at this.
“Good. Now that kind makes me excited. We’ll be making her day.”
Our flight was called for boarding and we all boarded, giving our tickets to the lady at the gate. We boarded the plane…knowing that once we met up with Crystal it would be the end of our five man group and we were pretty excited. Jinki was excited because he would no longer be the leader or the oldest. Jonghyun was excited because he had one more person to collaborate with who shared his love for music. Key was excited because he had a woman to dote on and give fashion advice to. I was excited for obvious reason and Taemin wasn’t as excited as the rest of us but he got to go somewhere new, and was in a way anxious to meet Crystal.
In our seats, I put in my ear buds and decided to nap to the sounds of Super Junior.
