Winds of Destiny(Pt11)
Sav drew in a slow waking breathe, arm stretching across to pull the cool body next to him closer. Feeling the soft hand rub his arm, his eyes fluttered open to the dimly lit room. He hated this part of the day most of all…waking up…in the wrong bed and wrong arms, but couldn’t bring himself to change it. To go back to Dublin meant going back to the problems he left behind, back to Joe’s hateful, accusatory filled eyes.
Sav took another deep breathe, exhaling slowly, as if to blow the many years past from his mind. He knew it wouldn’t help erase the past, just like all the other nights he tried. Tomorrow evening he would wake with the same empty feelings, ones he wanted so badly to fill, but couldn’t. Once again pushing those thoughts and feelings away, he concentrated on the man beside him, the fingers that twined through his hair, gently pulling it back from his face. He closed his eyes again, drawing what little comfort he could from his touch.
“How do you do it…to live this long and deal with everything?”
“You have been dealt a few hardships, but don’t let them get in the way of all the wonderful things that have happened to you.”
“Yeah…” Sav replied softly pulling away to lie on his back. “…sometimes it’s hard to think of all the good times.”
Nick turned to his side, studying his profile and the faint lines of sadness around his eyes. “Are you content here with me?”
Sav avoided looking at him. “I am. You have never treated me better than on this trip...well, just that one time. This is how you wanted our relationship to be from the beginning, but I fought you and it wasn’t.”
Nick reached over, placing his finger on his chin to gently turn his head to face him. “Your voice may sound convincing, but your eyes say differently.”
Sav quickly turned his head away again. “You didn’t answer my question about living this long and dealing with everything.”
“Yes I did.”
“No, you told me about me, not yourself.”
“You have asked me this before, my answer is the same.”
“If I would have known all this awful stuff was going to plague my life, I would never have chosen the path I took.”
“So you regret coming across?”
Sav let his eyes drift to his lips. “Sometimes.”
Nick pushed himself to his elbow. “Then you overcome your past, what it has dealt you and move on. Just as I deal with your hatred toward me for my mistreatment of you.”
Sav looked back at him. “I don’t hate you Nick, for a long time I did.”
“I’m not convinced that some one is following you. Could it possibly be Joe?”
“Great way to change the subject.” Throwing his arm above his head, Sav snorted. “Joe is in Dublin or….I think he is…I don’t know where he is really. I haven’t felt him since I left, haven’t bothered to either, ‘cause I know what I will find.”
“So you don’t think it’s him?”
“No….Joe wouldn’t do anything like that...he has, but the circumstances were different. Could be anybody, I’ve had my fair share of stalkers over the years. You being one of them.” Sav looked at the dimmer light in the window. “Men, women alike in the Community who want one night with me, not just a blood kiss either.”
“You do have your fair share of one night stands.” Nick gently touched his arm.
Turning his head to look at him. “Don’t even go there.” Sav shot back.
“Could be any number of them following you.”
Sav sat up. “You don’t even believe me anyway, so what is the point in discussing it.” Swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, he went about pulling swim shorts from the drew.
Nick causally reclined on the soft mattress watching his nude back side until it was covered. Desire once again hummed through him as he licked the taste of Sav from his lips.
Sav disappeared in the large in suite bathroom, returning with a towel to see Nick watching his every move. “Are you going to stay in here alone all night?”
Nick smiled seductively. “Come back to bed and I will not be alone.”
Sav rolled his eyes, grabbing the bottle of blood wine they didn’t finish earlier, he went out the french doors to the pool.

A few weeks later, another evening spent by the sparkling blue water. Nick causally reclined on the steps of the pool, the water gently lapping at his sides. His mind troubled as he watched him lazily drift around on the float. Wondering what else he could do to get Sav out of his mood of late. Following the incident at the Carnival weeks ago, he had kept mostly to himself. Sav didn’t venture from the suite very often, even when Nick tried to talk him into going out with them. To enjoy what Nice had to offer or a quiet drive around the country side. Sometimes it would end up with Sav yelling and slamming the door to their room. Other times he would sit in the dark, staring off in the distance, ignoring Nick’s gentle pleas to let him in, either in the room or his mind.
He even noticed the difference in him while in bed together, as if Sav was going through the motions just to please him. He became even more worried when Sav started drinking liquor heavily. Nick briefly considered taking him home to Dublin, but that thought quickly left his mind. There was nothing left there for him to go back too; he would have gone home by now instead of staying with him.
Nick also knew that his mood had nothing to do with Rachel and her confession of loving Sav more than that of friends. The two of them spent Rachel’s last night in Nice together, walking the grounds of the villa or sitting by the river talking. With promises of seeing each other again, they had parted on good terms and a new understanding between them.
There had been another occurrence when Sav felt some one stalking him. The three of them had started out on foot, intent on going to the little cafe that Crystal like to eat at. Half way there, Sav stopped in his tracks, refusing to go further, nearly frozen in fear. It took Nick and Crystal nearly fifteen minutes of coaxing, soothing voice to get him back to the villa. He retreated to the master suite, remaining there, barely sleeping or sitting in the chair by the window just staring out into the darkness for several days.
“Stop staring at me, Nick.” Came Sav’s soft grumble that interrupted his thoughts. “I hate it when you do that.”
“Nothing is meant by it.”
Sav rolled his eyes and flipped his head the other way so he could see him, then pushed himself away from the side.
Crystal plopped down beside Nick on the top step, she wiped the water from her face. “What’s wrong with him?”
“He doesn’t talk to me very much.”
“Well, poke around in his head to find out why he’s being so gloomy.”
“I can’t poke around if he doesn’t let me in.”
“Oh.” Crystal pulled her long blonde hair over her shoulder to squeeze the water out. “I hope he isn’t sinking into depression like Joe does. Has he ever done that?”
“Not that I recall…well not like Joe does anyway. His behavior of late is about the extent of his depression.”
“Well do something. He’s bleh attitude is starting to affect me.”
“And what would you have me do?”
“I don’t know.” Crystal frowned. “We’ve tried a lot of things and nothing has helped.”
‘I know one thing or person that would.’ Nick thought to himself as he continued to watch Sav.
“I know. Go piss him off with some silly word game.”
“He has never taken the bait when he is like this.”
“hum…ok…go beat him up like you use to.”
Nick whipped his head around to glare at her. “I most certainly will not. Those days are long past.”
Crystal smiled sheepishly and leaned away from him. Looking at Sav on the other side of the pool moving closer to the edge on the yellow float, he dropped his hand in the water to push himself away again. Twisting his head the other way, Crystal could see the muscles ripple in his arms as he got comfortable again on his stomach. “I could parade in front of him without my bikini on.”
Nick again whipped his head toward her. “That will not be necessary. If a rumor some how go out about that, you are a minor with two very older men an..…”
“That are gay.” Crystal quickly told him.
“I beg your pardon.” Nick huffed.
“Ok...sorry…bi-sexual. Geez Nick, you get so uptight about to many things. Oh and I’m hardly a minor, I will be 18 in a few months.”
“Until that day, you are still a minor. You still have to abide by my rules.”
“Says who?”
“States the piece of paper with my signature on it.”
“Yeah, right below Joe’s. He tells me what to do.”
“Joseph is not here, therefore you have to listen to me.” Nick smirked.
“Do I have to?” Crystal whined.
“Until you are of legal age and an adult, which is 18…yes you do.”
“You are no fun.”
“I can be fun.” Nick retorted.
“Then go dump him off the float.”
“Will you two shut the hell up, you’re giving me a headache.” Sav yelled from across the pool.
“That’s all the liquor you’ve been drinking lately giving you that headache Sav, not us.” Crystal yelled back.
Sav rolled off the float and swam under water toward them. He surfaced at the bottom step, cupping his hands together he splashed Crystal with a large amount of water, her squeal echoed around the pool.
“Parade around nude if you want, no one will notice.” Sav told her as he brushed his wet hair from his face. Going over to the lounge chairs, he snatched up a towel to dry off.
“What about Rachel? She is younger than I am and you noticed her?”
“How do you know about Rachel?”
“I read your journals Sav.”
“Well...” Sav hung the towel around his neck. “..Rachel has thousands of years worth of maturity...”
“She is 16, but that didn’t stop you from fucking her.”
“Watch your mouth.” Nick scolded her.
“She didn’t have to resort to such cheap measures as parading around nude for me to notice her. Besides, I didn’t know she was 16 until after I fucked her.”
“Watch your mouth too.”
“All the others you fuck, what about them? What did they do to get your attention?”
Sav held the corner of the towel to dry his face again. “If you read my journals, you would know that. I don’t have to explain myself to anyone, certainly not to a teenager that knows nothing about how to get some ones attention.”
Crystal narrowed her eyes at him. “I’m not some immature child Rick, I know how it works.”
“Oh right…” Sav dragged out the words. “The streets of LA taught you a lot, which included hooking up with a drug dealing, abusive boyfriend.”
“I did that to survive, same thing you did all those years with Nick locked in that cage.”
Sav stopped his motion of taking a drink of blood wine.
“Crystal, don’t go there.” Nick said softly beside her.
Taking that drink, Sav glared hard at her. “He is right, don’t go there.”
Dropping her eyes, Crystal splashed water on her legs. “Sorry.”
Sav spun on his feet and left them by the pool. Nick watched him leave, then turned to Crystal. Hooking his finger under her chin, he brought her head up so that she was looking at him. “Don’t pay attention to what he said. Blame it on his mood and the liquor.”
“Do you see me as cheap for suggesting that Nick?”
Smiling at her, Nick tucked a lose strand of wet hair behind her ear, then traced the pale white scar below her left eye. “No sweetheart. You are a very beautiful, strong young woman.”
Crystal leaned forward to hug her knees. “Thank you just the same.”
“Would you like to go for a walk? I can tell you what men of my time thought about women with…hum…say battle scars.”
“Your time, which century would that be?”
“When I was a young lad, before I came across, I still have a few battle scars of my own I could tell you about.”
“Are you going to tell me something I haven’t read in your journals?”
“Yes. There are many stories of my youth, that are not in my journals. Perhaps I will tell you about the young lass I was in love with.”
“You were in love with a woman?”
“Oh yes, she was eleven and I was fifteen.”
Crystal rolled her eyes with a smile, allowing him to pull her to her feet. “Maybe another time for that. I would rather hear about history stuff.”
“I’m enjoying our time together with lessons. I wanted to be a history teacher at one time.”
“Looks like you’re going to get that chance now.”
“It has been my pleasure to teach you.”
“I can’t wait for more.” Crystal smiled as she dried her hair and legs, then slipped on the sarong that matched her bikini. “What are we going to do about Sav’s mood?”
“Nothing.” Nick shrugged. “Let him brood for a little longer or until we leave here next week. Maybe a change of scenery will help.”
“It might. I’m looking forward to going some place new.”
“So am I.” Nick held his arm out for her to go first. “Now, I want to see that beautiful smile.”
Crystal tried to smile for him, but Sav’s words still hung in the air.
“Put a little more effort in that, like I’ve seen before and don’t give up your pursuit.”
“What are you talking about?” She knew the question was pointless to say, because Nick already knew her secret.
“You know very well what I’m talking about.” Taking her hand to tuck it in the crock of his arm. “Shall we?”
“Now I know why everyone hates your word games.” Crystal replied and allowed him to lead her down the path to the river front for their nightly stroll. Only this night will be filled with visions of the past as Nick schooled her of his childhood.
