"People can be so cold.
They'll hurt you and desert you.
Well they'll take your soul if you let them.
Oh yeah, but dont you let them."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hm..." Kate looked at the candy before them as they walked down the sweets aisle, gathering what they would need for a movie night. "Snickers or Milky Way?"
"Both, duh," Kelly tossed both bags into the cart.
Carrie laughed as she tossed a few things into the cart as well, glad to see both of them forgetting about the phone call and starting to have fun again.
"What you got?"
"A few vegan friendly snacks y'all are gonna try."
"Are they good?"
"Of course. Like I would give you anything that isn't."
Kelly smiled, forcing herself to turn back to the cart to avoid kissing her.
"So, are there any new movies y'all want to pick up, or do you just want to watch whatever I have?"
Kate turned to Kelly.
Kelly shrugged, "Whatever you have is fine. You seriously have a ridiculous amount of movies."
Carrie smiled, "I'm kinda a home body."
"Just one more reason why you're so great," Kelly nodded as they made their way towards the magazine aisle. She had promised Ashley that she'd pick up the latest gossip magazines for her. "Ok, so I have no idea which ones are good, so y'all are gonna have to pick."
Kate laughed, scanning through all the different magazines.
Carrie turned to Kelly, feeling her stiffen. "Kell?" she could see the muscles in her jaw twitching. She followed her gaze, her stomach turning as she realized who the Texan had seen.
"Here we go," Kate dumped a stack of magazines into the cart. "I just grabbed one of each, so that should cover it...what?"
"We need to go," Carrie said softly, starting to turn the cart around. She placed a hand on Kelly's arm, trying to get her to follow.
"You..." a voice nearly growled.
"Who's that?" Kate whispered.
"Alex's mom," Carrie tugged on Kelly's arm.
"What's she doing in Tennessee?"
"You...you killed my daughter," Mrs. Reed pointed at Kelly.
"Excuse me?" Kelly looked around in shock.
"You took her away from the hospital when she was in most need of care. You brought her all the way across the country without my permission--"
"You had no control over her any more," her eyes narrowed.
"She was my daughter!" Mrs. Reed argued. "And you took her all the way to Texas and kept her at your house which is out in the middle of nowhere, along with that tramp--" She pointed to Carrie. "--to do God knows what."
Carrie's jaw dropped.
"What exactly are you accusing me of?" Kelly asked in disbelief.
"I don't know...you tell me," she smirked.
"I would never hurt that girl," Kelly stepped to her.
Carrie and Kate both quickly reached out, pulling her back.
"You don't know what you're talking about," Kelly replied, her eyes a blaze.
"I have proof," Mrs. Reed, waved the magazine in her hand.
"You piece of--"
"Kelly, don't," Kate warned. "Let's just go...all of us," she took Carrie's arm, pulling her away as well as the country singer started to think twice about holding the feisty Texan back.
"You'll be hearing from my lawyer!" Mrs. Reed called out. "This isn't the last of this!"
Kate walked into her living room to find Kelly sitting on her couch as Carrie knelt before her, holding her hands, whispering softly. She wasn't able to get a word out of either of them on the ride back from the store, so she just brought them back to her place after giving up on trying to find Carrie's on her own.
"Here you go," Kate handed Kelly a small glass of whiskey and ice.
Kelly took it shakily, sipping it carefully.
Carrie looked at her questioningly.
"Trust me, it'll calm her down."
Carrie nodded, knowing that Kate had been around Kelly for much longer that she had.
"Do you want anything?"
"No, I shouldn't," Carrie shook her head, her chest still tightened, her heart not willing to calm yet. Just the thought of Alex's mom was enough to make her blood boil. She studied Kelly's face carefully before turning to Kate. "Do you mind if I..." she motioned to Kelly.
"Not at all," Kate assured as she sat on the recliner. "Go ahead."
Carrie got off the floor, making herself comfortable as she sat in the corner of the sofa. She pulled Kelly onto her lap, wrapping her arms around her.
Kelly stared down at the drink in her hands, her eyes blank.
Carrie kissed her temple softly, bringing her lips to the Texan's ear, "I'm here, ok? I'm right here, so don't even think about shutting down on me right now, alright?"
Kelly nodded, allowing herself to relax some as she rested her head against Carrie's chest.
Carrie kissed the top of her head, smiling softly as Kelly laced their fingers together.
"So, that was Alex's mom?" Kate questioned.
"That was Alex's mom," Carrie nodded.
"What was she going off about?"
"I guess she found out that Kelly and I took Alex to Texas with us."
"Yea, but y'all had the hospital's permission, right?"
"Yea, and we had a doctor with us."
"Then I don't get it," Kate shook her head. "You didn't do anything wrong. Alex was perfectly safe."
Carrie frowned, "I doubt it's Alex's safety that made her react like that."
"What do you mean?"
"Alex's parents are...well, to put it mildly, they're scum. It's all about money to them. The hospital was afraid something like this was going to happen."
"You think she's going to try and get money from you guys?"
"Yea," Carrie sighed. "What I don't get is how she found out about our going to Texas."
Kate's eyebrows furrowed before she stood, "Be right back."
Carrie nodded, kissing the top of Kelly's head again, "Are you ok?"
Kelly nodded, turning in her arms. She wrapped her arms around the country singer, hugging her tightly as she buried her face in her neck.
Carrie rubbed her back soothingly as Kate walked back in with one of the bags from the store in her hand. "Kate look, I'm sorry about all this. All we wanted was to have a fun day with no drama or anything."
"It's ok," Kate replied, digging through the magazines she had dumped out of the bag.
"We wanted to say thanks for sticking by us," Carrie explained. "We know it hasn't be easy for you, so we wanted to have a day with none of that b.s."
"It's fine," she assured with a smile. "I mean it. I had a blast today, I really did. And all this...it's just a reminder of how much y'all have been through together, you know? And it shows how great y'all are together. That's good to see...for me. You know, proving I did the right thing by backing you guys up with this."
"Thanks."
Kate nodded, her smile falling as she looked down at the magazine in her hands.
"What?"
She handed it over to Carrie.
Carrie's eyes scanned the front page. It had a picture of her in the airport from the day they had brought Alex to Texas along side a picture of Kelly holding Alex. She felt her stomach turn as she read the tabloid's caption:
Idols' Kidnapping Scandal Led To Girl's Death?
Kelly sat up at the feeling of Carrie's arm tensing around her.
Carrie tried to hand the magazine back to Kate, but Kelly took it from her hand, "Kell...you don't want to read that."
Kelly's face paled as she looked over the cover.
"Kell?"
Kelly shook her head, pushing off of her as she stood up quickly, hurrying through a door along the wall.
Carrie turned to Kate.
"Bathroom," she answered.
A moment later, the sound of Kelly getting sick could be heard through the thin wall.
Carrie shook her head, tears of frustration forming.
"You should call your lawyers," Kate noted softly. "Managers and PR would be good right about now, too."
"And I'll probably never
Have it all figured out, but what I know is
I wasn't meant to walk this world without you."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kate knocked softly on the door before entering, "Hey."
"Hey," Carrie accepted the bottle of water she offered, clearly exhausted.
"How's it going?"
"It's definitely going," she rubbed her forehead tiredly. "Kelly and I each have like fifty million people working on this, I swear."
"That's good, though."
"Yea. Hey, thanks for letting us kinda set up shop in your room," she motioned to the two laptops and PDA's and stacks of paper spread out over Kate's bed.
"It's fine," Kate assured. "I'm just glad I can help in some way."
Carrie nodded, yawning.
"Where's Kelly?"
"I made her go take a hot shower. She is so tense right now."
"Y'all can just stay in here tonight, ok?"
"You don't have to do that..."
"Neither of you should be driving. You are both still clearly upset and tired. It's fine."
"We're not gonna kick you out of your bed. We'll take the couch or something."
"You'll make Kelly sleep all cramped up on the couch with you?" Kate raised an eyebrow.
"She can sleep in here with you, and I'll sleep on the sofa."
"You do you hear yourself, right?"
Carrie frowned, shaking her head. She looked around at the mess surrounding her, "I just...I don't know what to do right now. I don't know how to make this easier for her, and I hate that. I absolutely hate it."
Kate shook her head, "Carrie, KC's a very easy person to please. You don't have to be a super hero that fixes everything. All you have to do is be there with her through everything."
"I think she'll be better once we've heard from Dr. Lopez," she thought out loud.
"Who's Dr. Lopez?"
"He was the main doctor on Alex's case. Kelly really, really trusted him. We've heard from everyone else, our lawyers, the hospital's lawyers, our managers, everybody, but I think once she hears from him, she'll be able to relax a bit."
"I hope y'all hear from him soon, then."
"Yea. Are you sure you're fine with sleeping on the couch?" Carrie looked up at her.
"I'm more than fine with it," Kate assured. "Plus, I'm not sure when Jill's getting back, and I wouldn't want her to walk in on you sleeping on the couch whether Kelly's with you or not."
"Is it ok if I ask what happened with that? With the phone call earlier?"
"Yea, um...she was just calling to see where I was and what we were doing and when I'd be back. She got upset when I told her that I was still with y'all, and that I probably wouldn't be back until tomorrow."
"She was harsh with you?"
Kate nodded, looking down at her hands that were folded in her lap.
"Maybe she was upset we didn't invite her?"
"Do you honestly think she wanted to hang out with the three of us?"
"You're right," she frowned. "Plus, like I said earlier, today was supposed to be about you and giving you a chance to relax for a bit...that wouldn't have happened if Jill were there."
Kate sighed.
"I'm sorry she was harsh with you because of Kelly and I. You don't deserve that at all."
She shrugged, "I love Kelly to death, and you too now that I've gotten to know you a lot better...it's worth it, I think."
Carrie smiled, watching as Kelly walked up behind Kate.
"Hey," Kelly wrapped her arms around her neck from behind, surprising her.
Kate jumped, "Hey."
"We love you too, you know?" she kissed her cheek.
"I know," Kate smiled softly, nodding.
"Good."
Kate stood up stretching, "Ok, I'm gonna leave you two be. Get some sleep, ok?" She pulled Kelly into a hug, kissing the top of her head before turning to Carrie. "Make sure she gets some sleep. Like you said, there's a bunch of people working really hard on this, so there's no need for the two of you to be wearing yourselves out right now, got it?"
"Got it," Carrie nodded, watching as she walked out of the room, before opening her arms as Kelly crawled onto her lap. "She's such a sweetheart...I hate putting her through all this."
"Me too," Kelly leaned back into her, resting her head against the country singer's shoulder.
Carrie turned, pressing her lips against her forehead, keeping them there.
"We're gonna be ok," she nodded softly. "You just gotta stick with me through this."
"I will," Carrie assured.
"I n-need you for this," she whispered shakily.
"I know," Carrie rubbed her back, feeling Kelly burying her face in her neck. "And don't worry, you have me. I'm right here, I promise."
Kelly wrapped her arms around her, her eyes stinging.
Carrie held her closer, her own eyes watering at the feeling of Kelly's tears on her skin.

"What did he say?" Carrie asked, her face inches from Kelly's as they lay face to face.
"Not to worry about it because they have every person possible working on it for us."
"Do you feel better?" she brushed a curl behind her ear.
"Do you?" Kelly raised an eyebrow.
Carrie avoided her gaze.
"This isn't just about me, Care. You're in this too."
"I know, but I just want to make sure you're ok...then I'll deal."
"Or we could just deal together," Kelly offered, scooting closer.
"I need to be here for you."
"You are here for me," she cradled her cheek. "And right now, nothing would make me feel better than if you let me take care of you."
Carrie couldn't help but smile as Kelly kissed her softly. Her fingers danced at the hem of the Texan's shirt before she raised it over her head.
Kelly looked at her curiously.
"You want to take care of me? Well nothing makes me feel better than seeing you naked."
Kelly giggled.
Carrie's smile grew, "And that right there. That definitely makes me feel better."
"My laugh?"
"No...that wasn't a laugh. That was a giggle."
"So my laugh doesn't make you feel better?"
Carrie laughed softly, "Your laugh...that insanely hot, hoarse laugh you got, makes me feel a lot of things...very good things."
Kelly smiled as Carrie rolled on top of her, kissing her.
"You want to take care of me?" she whispered.
Kelly nodded as Carrie kissed along her jaw line before placing her lips right against her ear.
"Then let me take care of you."
Kelly shivered, "I just said...that's what I just said."
"Yea, but I said it so much sexier," she kissed just behind her jaw. "So I win."
Kelly's eyes closed lightly at the feeling of Carrie slowly kissing her neck, her hand moving up her stomach, "Care..."
"Hm?"
"You know we can't do this here."
"Do what?"
"This...we can't do this in Kate's bed."
"You mean kissing?" she kissed along her collarbone.
"No kissing."
"What about touching," her fingers traced a light circle around her belly button.
"Definitely no touching," Kelly's breathing was shaky.
"Why not?" Carrie looked down at her with a pout.
"Because things tend to escalate pretty quickly with us," she nodded. "And kissing and touching tends to lead to heavy kissing and heavy touching before we even realize it."
Carrie smirked, her fingers slipping just inside the waistband of her pajama bottoms.
"Ca-Care..."
"You do realize your skin is burning up right now, right?"
"I believe we've discussed the effect you have on me plenty of times by now."
"So are you saying you don't want me right now?"
"No...I want you..."
Carrie bit her lip at the raspiness of her voice.
"I just think it's unfair after all that Kate's done for us that we repay her by having sex in her bed."
Carrie nodded as she leaned down, kissing her softly, "You're right."
"Yea?"
"Yea," she smiled, rolling onto her back, taking the shorter girl with her.
Kelly immediately snuggled into her neck at the feeling of Carrie's arms wrapping around her.
"I'd much rather just hold you tonight anyway," Carrie kissed the top of her head.
Kelly's heart melted.
"And I promise you that you were right earlier," she rubbed her back slowly. "We're gonna be ok."
"Just stay with me," she mumbled, tiredly.
Carrie smiled softly at the sound of Kelly quickly falling asleep. She kissed the top of her head again, "I will. I promise."
"Love you."
Carrie froze, unsure of how that comment was supposed to be taken. Was it the typical 'I love you' that they had said so often to each other that was usually proceeded by an 'You know I--' to show it's context, or was it...She felt Kelly's breath coming out slow and even against her neck, and realized that she had fallen asleep. Carrie's stomach jumped nervously as she wrapped her arms around her tighter, pulling her closer, "I love you too."

She took a deep breath as she rode in the back of the limo, her sister seated beside her. Her eyes closed as she rested her head against the seat, thinking about that night. She still had no idea how she made it through that without having a complete breakdown. Before her, that article definitely would've been enough to send her over the edge. But being there with her, lying in her arms...that was the definition of comfort to her.
"Are you ok?" her sister asked, studying her face worriedly.
"I'm ok," she nodded.
"You don't look too good...you know, it's not too late to back out if you aren't ready."
"I'm ok," she smiled softly, her eyes still closed. "Just remembering."
