"The party's all over,
Drink up and go home.
It's too late to love her,
And leave her alone."

Carrie rubbed Kelly's back soothingly. Her lawyer and Kelly's lawyer had been talking with the hospital's lawyers for nearly two hours now, and neither singer could understand a word they were saying. "Do you want to go get some coffee or something?" she whispered.
Kelly shook her head. Her chin was resting on her arms that were folded on the table as she watched the lawyers intently.
"Do you want me to go get some coffee and bring it back?"
Kelly shook her head, "Don't leave."
Carrie frowned, not liking the fact that they weren't by themselves and she couldn't just pull the Texan onto her lap and hold her. "How about I text Laura, and she and Narvel can bring us something back?"
Kelly nodded.
Carrie took out her phone, quickly texting her manager.
"Care?"
"Yea, baby?" Carrie leaned over to where she was eye level with her.
"I don't like this," Kelly admitted.
"You don't like what?"
"This...just sitting around...not knowing what's going on. I mean, we have so many people helping us, but I just feel so out of the loop. I don't like that...it's scary. We shouldn't be out of the loop for this...this is way too big."
"I know," Carrie ran a hand through her hair. "And don't worry, as soon as Narvel and Laura get here, they're going to go over everything with us. I think they just all want to make sure everything is out on the table, and all the facts are known before the make any real decisions, you know?"
Kelly nodded, "I wish it were just you and me right now."
"Yea...remind me to kiss you later."
Kelly smiled softly.
Both singers turned as the doors to the conference room opened.
Laura walked in, quickly followed by Narvel.
"Sorry," Laura smiled apologetically. "I just got your text, but we were already on our way up here."
Kelly sat up straight as the two managers sat at the table, the lawyers quieting down.
"Where's Jason?" Narvel asked curiously.
"Playing with the kids," Kelly replied. "He was getting too antsy in here, and it was making me nervous so I sent him over to the game room. Leave him there," she added when Narvel pulled out his phone to call him. "He needs to relax a bit, and kids always seem to really like him."
"So what's the plan?" Carrie asked, taking Kelly's hand, not caring that everyone else could see.
"Well," Mr. Smith, the hospital's attorney spoke up. "To start off with, we immediately filed a suit against the magazine and demanded they retract the article."
"A suit?" Kelly frowned. "Is that really necessary?"
"Yes," Narvel nodded. "That article is a complete lie and it could seriously hurt both of your careers. We're not messing around with this. "
"Now," Mr. Smith continued. "We already spoke with the local authorites, and the kidnapping charges have been dropped."
"Kidnapping charges?" Carrie's eyes widened. "Were they planning on arresting us?"
"Mrs. Reed did file charges against you, yes."
"But we did nothing wrong."
"We know," he held up a hand to calm her. "And like I said, the charges have been dropped. You had full legal permission to do what you did."
"And what about the other stuff?" she squeezed Kelly's hand. "What about the article saying we're responsible for Alex's death."
"There is an investigation starting on that as we speak."
Kelly's eyes closed.
Carrie scooted her chair closer, wrapping an arm around her, allowing the Texan to bury her face in her shoulder, "Her death wasn't our fault."
"We know, and this investigation is going to prove that. The best thing for all of us to do is to just cooperate with the police on this. The faster and smoother this thing goes, the better off you'll be in the end."
Carrie nodded, turning to Laura, "Now what?"
"That's up to the two of you. The magazine is going to retract their article. They have even offered for y'all to do an interview with them...tell people your sides of the story."
Kelly shook her head against Carrie's shoulder.
"No," Carrie replied.
"Issue a statement?" Narvel offered.
Kelly shook her head again.
"Kelly, people are going to want to know--"
"They have no right to know," she countered, sitting up straight, her eyes red. "Alex was...she was an angel, alright? And she, or her name, or her spirit, or whatever you want to call it does not deserve to be drug through this mess. We are not taking this public--I don't care what people want. They don't have a say in this matter."
"You know her mom is going to be all over the place talking about this."
"That woman is no more her mom than my biological father is my dad," Kelly replied, coldly. "And she can be wherever, saying whatever she wants...the truth will come out, and then people will see her for what she really is."
"Don't forget you're in the middle of promo right now for your new album," Narvel reminded. "That's all reporters are going to want to talk about in the interviews."
Kelly sighed, rubbing her forehead, "Cancel it."
"The album?"
She shook her head, "The interviews."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes," she nodded. "All of them. If they want me to still just perform, then that's fine, but no interviews."
"What about the concert?" Mr. Smith questioned.
"Well, I still want to do the concert with Carrie, but I mean, I doubt the hospital wants us to with all this mess..."
"The hospital is standing behind the two of you one hundred percent," Narvel assured. "Laura and I just got through talking with the board. They still want you two to do the concert."
Kelly turned to Carrie.
Carrie smiled softly, "We'll do it."
"What do you want to do about your schedule, Carrie?" Laura asked.
"Well, what do I have? Just a couple fairs, right?"
"Yes."
"Ok, well, we'll do one, and see how it goes and decide if we want to do the others."
Laura nodded, making a note in her blackberry.
"But any interviews before the fairs for radio or anything...cancel them."
"Care, you don't have to..." Kelly said softly.
"It's your call," Carrie replied. "You don't think we should talk about Alex...I full-heartedly agree with you."
Kelly gave a small smile, "Remind me later, too, ok?"
Carrie nodded, mirroring her smile.
"Ok, so then, I think we're done here," Narvel nodded. "You two get home and get some sleep. You both look like you've had a rough couple days."
"Gee, thanks," Kelly forced a laugh.
Narvel smiled, "You know what I meant. Just get some rest."
"We will," Carrie assured as she and Kelly stood. "And thank y'all for this...we'd so be lost without you guys."
"It's nothing," Laura assured. "And Narvel's right. Get some sleep."
Kelly nodded, following Carrie out the door.
"You want to go find Jason and then head back to your place? They were right...sleep is sounding really good right about now."
"Yea," Kelly agreed. "You...me...a big, comfy bed...what more could a girl want?"
Carrie laughed softly, wrapping an arm around her as they walked down the hospital's halls to the game room.

"I will never let you fall,
I'll stand up with you forever,
I'll be there for you through it all,
Even if saving you sends me to heaven."

"You're stressed," Kelly noted as she lay, curled into Carrie's side, her head resting on her chest, her arm draped over her stomach.
"Why do you say that?" Carrie asked, an arm wrapped tightly around her.
"Your heart's fast."
"Ever think that it's because you're so close to me? It tends to speed up when you're around."
Kelly smiled softly, "Yea, but you're tense too."
Carrie sighed, kissing the top of her head, "I'm fine."
"Talk to me?"
"I'm just a little aggravated," she admitted. "This whole thing with Alex's parents...it's just so dumb. The fact that we're even have to deal with it, is so...it's just dumb."
"I'm sorry."
"I don't know how many times people are going to have to tell you this, but I'm willing to keep repeating myself until it sinks in: none of this is in any way your fault."
"You being involved...that's my fault. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't be in this mess."
"It's not like you dragged me, kicking and screaming," Carrie laughed softly. "If I remember right, I became involved pretty willingly."
"I shouldn't have promised Alex you'd come with us. That was wrong of me. We weren't even talking at the time."
"I wanted to go. I wanted nothing more than to go to Texas with you."
"With me, yea, you went because of me, not because of Alex."
"Kelly, I loved that little girl. I don't know how you can think any differently."
"No, Care, I know you did," Kelly pushed herself up so she could look at her. "I'm sorry. I know you loved her. I didn't mean it like that. I just...it is my fault that you became so close to her, and I'm sorry that you've had to go through so much because of it."
"I don't regret any of it," Carrie shook her head. "I'd go through it all again. Alex, she..." Carrie swallowed, fighting back tears. "She taught me a lot. And getting to witness you and how you were with her--that is something I'll never regret. If anything...if I regret anything, it's that I didn't get to know her sooner."
Kelly's eyes closed as Carrie reached up, brushing away her tears for her.
"Don't be sorry, because I am so thankful to you for introducing me to her."
"I still miss her," Kelly confessed in a whisper.
"Come here, baby," Carrie wrapped an arm around her, pulling her down. She kissed her forehead before hugging her tightly. "I know you miss her, and I know all this bull is just bringing all that up and making it harder for you, but I'm here, ok? You ever find it too hard, or feel like you just can't deal anymore, you just come to me. I promised you I'd be here, remember?"
Kelly nodded.
"And I'm still here, right?"
"Yea," she sniffed.
"Alright, well, I'm promising it again. I'm not leaving you, Kell. I'll always be here for you, so you're gonna have to get used to that, ok?"
Kelly let out a choked back laugh.
"Good," Carrie smiled, wrapping her other arm around her as well.
