Chapter 14
The rain was pouring out side and the tears were pouring inside. For the first time, Orlando had allowed himself to just imagine that she wasn't coming back. That she was gone forever and he had messed up everything. He was watching Harry Potter. He didn't even know why he had bought the movie, and he most certainly hadn't meant to put it in the VCR now, but it was there, and it's happy images were flashing across the screen.
Hannah hated this movie. She thought it was a blatant Lord of the Rings rip-off. She had gone so far as to abstain from watching- the first movie for a whole two years, until he had sat her down and made her watch it. She still didn't like it.
But, for some reason, he was watching it. And he loved it. The ghosts appeared for the first time in Hogwart's dining room and Orlando smiled sadly. This was the worst part for her.
"Why the hell would you want to watch shit like that?"
He whirled at the sound of Hannah's voice.
He sprang from the couch, and bounded over the back in an instant, bringing himself nose to nose with Hannah. He couldn't believe his eyes, and yet there she was, right in front of him, dripping wet. He raised a hand and brought it up to her face, but not touching her skin. She leaned into his palm, and the warmth on contact jolted the surprised man. He dropped his hand and kissed her, long and hard.
When he broke the kiss, he leaned down and put his forehead to her own. "Are you back? For good?"
"Yes."
"What about the-"
She placed a hand on her stomach protectively. "The baby is safe and sound. You don't think I could honestly do something as horrible as that do you?"
He chuckled softly and wrapped his arms around her. "No, never." Tilting his head back up, he looked down at Hannah with all the love and devotion he could muster. "Did you mean it when you said you were back for good?"
"Yes, with all my heart." She answered with a steady gaze and a steady voice and Orlando believed her completely.
"Then marry me. Stay with me forever." The words seemed to materialize out of nowhere, but Orlando realized they were exactly the words that he wanted and needed to say to her. She blinked up at him a few times, not saying a word. "Let's raise this child the right way and give it a family to care for it." When she was still silent, he went so far as to get down on one knee. "Please Hannah. I love you and I want to do everything possible for you. Please?"
She brought her hand up to him lips, stopping his speech with gentle pressure from her finger tips. "You love me?" He nodded and she smiled. "Claire was right. She said I should trust you and I just realized how completely I do. Trust you that is . . . and how much I love you. But, there are things we need to talk about. There are things I need to tell you, about my past and about me."
Orlando could only nod. "All right, well, let's talk about them." He led her to the couch and sat down next to her.
"I've already had a child."
Orli's stunned silence was proof enough that he wasn't expecting that one.
"Her name was Kathryn Julia. She was a gorgeous baby, but she was premature. And she died, only two weeks after I gave birth to her. She was the most beautiful little thing. She opened her eyes, right before she left this world, and she had the most beautiful blue eyes. They were so clear. They were so much like her father's." Hannah's own eyes teared over. It was tearing her heart out to tell Orlando this.
"Her father was a bastard. Dan West. I met him when I was fresh out of high school at Juliard. He was tall. He was handsome. He was talented. And he actually liked a shy girl from Georgia who was too skinny and too short. He was amazing. He was also my first real boyfriend and my first lover. So, being my naïve self, I figured that he would be overjoyed that I had gotten pregnant. By this time, I was about two months along. We had been dating for about a year by then, but I could tell he was getting distant. When I went over to his apartment to let him know, he was dressed to impress and he was setting up his place for a guest.
"He was furious when I even suggested it was his. He ranted and raved about how it probably wasn't his and how dare I come to him and try to pin it on him. He threw me out the door as his 'date' was arriving. He just threw me out like yesterday's trash."
Orlando looped an arm around her shoulder, trying to give her some comfort.
"I left Julliard, and went home. My parents were well off enough to take care of us both. And they supported me a lot the first five months. They even went so far as to redecorate a room in their house for me and the baby. Bought me a crib and everything. It seemed like things would be okay. That was until they stumbled upon a car accident on an abandoned back road one night. They tried to help the guy in the car out, but he was stuck pretty tight. And in their struggles, they both missed the Semi. The semi didn't miss them. We had to have a closed casket funeral for both. The actual trauma of hearing of their deaths sent me into labor and I delivered prematurely. As I said, my child only survived two weeks. It was awful."
She stopped her horrid story, burying her face in Orlando's shoulder. "It's alright love. What ever has happened in the past, is over and done. Everything will be all right. Trust me."
She looked back up at him through tear spiked lashes. "I do trust you. I trust you more than anything in the whole world."
"Then say you'll marry me. I won't leave you. Or our child."
~!~!~!~!~!~!~
They say love does conquer all. They say that with love, anything is possible. And I for one believe them. As I watched the woman I love walk down the isle, I believe everything good anyone has ever said about love. With love, dreams can come true and fantasy can become reality. And as for the most romantic, love filled question of all time, "I do."
The End.
