Thanks for all the great reviews.
Kellie wasn’t sure how long she sat there and sobbed. She looked around the sitting area of the suite until her eyes rested on her laptop. A small light next to the power button indicated it was still on. She walked over and opened it. Orlando hadn’t closed any of the files. She quickly clicked them all closed. It was then that she realized he never opened the file with all the news reports in it. Kellie looked at the time on her toolbar, three a.m. “I need to get out of here.” She whispered. She finished closing the files and then shut the computer down. She slid it into it’s case and left it on the table. She hurried into the bedroom and dragged her suitcase out of the closet. Throwing it onto the bed she began to clean out the drawers. Kellie didn’t bother with packing neatly, she just crammed what she could into the case. Somehow she got it closed and then entered the bathroom and filled her smaller carry on with all her toiletries. Kellie had laid out jeans and a t-shirt which she quickly changed into and pulled her sneakers on. She quickly braided her hair and took a last look around. She had managed to pack without crying, but now the tears threatened. Drawing her arm across her face she wiped the tears away. She then made a call to the front desk to have her luggage picked up and sent to the airport. She was on the phone with the airport when the bell hop knocked. She let him in and gestured to her luggage. When he had it loaded onto his cart, Kellie handed him a twenty dollar bill. “Thank you!” He smiled. Kellie didn’t reply. Kellie hung up the phone and took one last look. She didn’t double check to see if she’d forgotten anything, she didn’t care. She shouldered her laptop bag and headed for the elevator. She had a stop to make before she went to the airport.
Orlando had made it to the SUV and was now parked across the street from the hotel. His eyes were red and swollen from crying. He sat and watched the entrance waiting for Kellie to come out. Just thinking about her brought on fresh tears and made his heart feel like it was in a vice. He had called Johnny and told him everything, only to have Johnny call him a fool. Orlando clutched the steering wheel and sighed. It had only been a month, but he felt so connected to her! The days they had spent together had further solidified their relationship. The information Kate had supplied destroyed all that in an instant. He had even called her and cried to her about what had happened.
“I’m sorry Orli! If I had known you would be this devastated I wouldn’t have told you.” Kate had said.
“No, I needed to know. I just wish she’d told me not you.”
“Obviously she’s hiding something, I mean she didn’t even try to explain things when you confronted her.”
“I didn’t give her a chance.”
The last sentence ran through his mind over and over. He pounded the steering wheel. He glanced at the entrance just in time to see Kellie walk out. He held his breath as she looked around. If she noticed the SUV she didn’t recognize it or acknowledge that she did. Her eyes were swollen and red also. She barely smiled at the door man and shook her head when he said something to her. She looked at the hotel one last time and headed down the dark street. Orlando noticed that she only had her laptop. He started the truck and thought about going after her. “I can’t!” He shouted. “I need to let her go.” He then pulled across the street into the parking garage. He was afforded one last glance of her retreating figure. Kellie’s shoulders were hunched and her head hung low. It was an image he wouldn’t soon forget.
Kellie walked three blocks to an all night Kinko’s. On her way she had called Jenna and asked her to pick her up at the airport, promising to explain everything then. When she got to the store she pulled out her laptop and asked to hook up to a printer. A half hour and large stack of papers later she was finished. Kellie quickly made sure everything was in order and then she put it all in two large manilla envelopes. She quickly addressed them to Johnny and included a note explaining what they were and asking him to pass them on to Orlando. She also included a code word that would let security know she wasn’t some crazed fan. After making arrangements for a bike messenger to deliver the envelopes later that day, Kellie called a taxi and headed to the airport. She had no problem boarding and the flight left on time. Kellie had done all she could. She had printed out all the articles she had. All good and bad. She’d also supplied a judge’s ruling and insurance company statement. Kellie also copied some letters from her family and her husband’s as well as the last letter she had ever received from him. It was all intensely personal and painful to go through. Orlando needed to know the whole truth, not just the version he had received. She also included her own letter to him asking him to read everything and apologizing for not telling him sooner. She also asked him not to try and contact her. That was the hardest part. Something had broke in her and she began building her wall. She resolved to not let anyone in again. It hurt to much, Orlando had hurt her to much. The flight seemed to take forever, but finally Kellie landed in LA. She was greeted by a somber faced Jenna. “You alright?” She asked. Kellie smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I will be.”
Jenna drove silently towards Kellie’s apartment. “You don’t need to tell me right now.” Kellie had been starring out the window, turned and looked at her friend. “I don’t need to know until you’re ready to tell me.” Jenna patted her hand. When they finally reached her front door Kellie felt relaxed. She went in and collapsed on the couch. Jenna carried her suitcase into the bedroom. “I’ll make some tea.” She said when she came back out. From the kitchen she hear Jenna rustling around. “Oh! By the way all your mail is on your desk.” Jenna peaked out. “You got a package.”
Kellie didn’t remember ordering anything and was curious. She walked over to the desk and picked up a small square package. It was wrapped in brown paper with no return address. Curiosity overruled exhaustion and Kellie opened it. She pulled out a velvet box and a note. Her brow creased as she sank into her chair. Jenna had come out, curious about the package. Kellie opened the box and gasped. Inside was a silver ring. It was plain and smooth. On the inside it was engraved with what looked like elvish script. Kellie began to tremble. She fumbled to open the note and almost tore it in the process.
It read:
Dearest Love,
I’m sending this out on the day I’m meeting you at the airport. I know that our time together will be wonderful and I just wanted. After this short month I have grown very fond of you. My every waking moment is spent thinking of you. Even if you don’t feel as I do yet. I still want to tell you that I’m falling in love with you. Take this ring as a reminder of my devotion.
The inscription “Lle ten’oio” means “yours forever”. I had it done in Elven to keep it private to us.
Lle ten’oio,
Orli
Kellie gasped and dropped the note. A sob escaped her throat and she dropped the box. Kellie ran into her bedroom and Jenna heard the lock click. She also heard Kellie sobbing uncontrollably. She knelt down and picked up the box and the note. She quickly read it and studied the ring. Orlando had sent it with the best intentions. He couldn’t have guessed things would go so badly.
