Chapter 13
“Kyo, can I talk to you?” the gray haired vocalist turned to face the younger man, and gave a short nod. The other had been sitting in the living room for over thirty minutes without saying a single word of what he had come to tell. “I’m sure by now you have heard about Die and Toshiya talking to each other again.” Kyo nodded as the words left the drummer’s mouth. Shinya turned his eyes to the floor of what had been their apartment until a couple weeks ago. “And, you remember that I had chosen to be single as long as Toshiya refused to see Die,” Shinya’s voice began to crack, and he lowered it in a vain attempt to make that fact less noticeable. “But, I realized that as long as I have been without you, I have grown weaker and weaker.” Kyo walked over to the younger man, and pulled him into a gentle embrace, feeling his breathing become hitched as the drummer began to cry.
“Shhh… what is it?” Kyo whispered to the other, trying to calm his sobs. Shinya shook his head before trying to talk again.
“I just… I don’t want to be alone anymore. I want to have you with me when I wake up in the middle of the night. I want to be able to hold you whenever I feel lonely, and not have to be afraid that you are going to leave me...."
Kyo’s eyes grew wide as Shinya spoke and he could feel the sting of tears forming in his own eyes.
“Shh… I’m not going to leave you now.” The older man whispered as he began to gently rub the other’s back in an attempt to sooth him.

** “Kaoru..? Kaoru wake up.” The sound of a woman’s somewhat familiar voice filled the purple haired man’s head. He knew he had heard that voice before, but for the life of him, he could not place where he had. “Kaoru, please, wake up. Snap out of this. I know you can… please. I want you to come back home.”
“Who are you?” that was the only question he could think to ask, as the face wasn’t exactly forming in his mind that he knew to go with the voice. A pained sob was the next thing he heard.
“Niikura-san, I think that’s enough.” More crying. The sound of people walking. And the bandleader could have sworn that he felt someone take his hand… almost pleading for something that he couldn’t understand.
“Kaoru… Kaoru..! KAORU!!!” the woman’s voice continued to ring in his ears, and no matter how hard he tried, he could not think of who that woman might have been. He was certain she knew him, and that he knew her, but if he were to have been asked who she was, he would not be able to answer… not past a simple ‘I don’t know.’ at any rate. His attention was brought back when he heard the sounds of footsteps returning to his side.
“I thought you were leaving…” he didn’t know who he was talking to, or even if they had heard him, he only knew that someone had come back into the room, and he was tired.
“Forgive us, Kaoru. We had no idea she would react as she did when we agreed to let her see you.” /That voice…. I know that voice…./
“Toshiya..? What are you doing here?” he was more than certain that it was the blue haired one’s voice he had heard.
“My name is Toshimasa, but… how did you know that?” His voice seemed oddly optimistic… almost hopeful.
“What? You think after twelve years I wouldn’t know the sound of your voice?” /I can’t believe he would be –that- foolish. I guess him and Die really were made for each other./
“Kao—“
“Toshi… it’s okay. Just go with it. There’s not much more of a choice, anyway. He’s going to be in for a while at the rate he’s going. It’s only a matter of time until we have to tell his mother that he won’t be going back.”
“Die, you know as well as I do that my mother is dead. She died a long time ago.” Even as he tried to say this, the words caught in his throat, causing him nearly to choke on what he was saying.
“Yes, I know… sorry, Kaoru-san.” There was a slight pause before Kaoru heard anyone speak again.
“Well, it’s time to eat.” Kaoru raised his eyebrows in the direction of Toshiya’s voice.
“Getting to be a little pushy, aren’t you?” after asking this, Kaoru could distinctly hear Die whispering something to Toshiya. He didn’t care too much though. He was probably just telling him not to do anything that would get him on Kaoru’s bad side. /As if he would have to work hard to do that…./
“Sorry, Kao-kao… you are hungry, right? I mean, you haven’t really eaten anything all day.” Toshiya said, his voice having softened considerably. Kaoru slowly nodded… he was rather hungry…

The next day….
Kaoru sat at the table that was in the middle of the rehearsal room, looking over some new music, schedules, and various other papers. His attention was only broken at the sound of two of his band mates making their ways into the now quiet room.
Kyo slid his arm out from behind the petite drummer carefully, almost as though he didn’t want Kaoru to notice that it was behind the younger man to begin with. Shinya understood why he did it, and swiftly made his way past the glaring guitarist and to his seat behind the drums. Die and Toshiya had been there for a while, and Kyo knew this by the fact that they were now asleep in each other’s arms on the couch that faced the instruments. Carefully the vocalist went to his microphone stand and, after making sure that it was on and the volume turned up considerably, removed the small device from the stand.
“WAKE UP, YOU’RE DEAD!” Kyo screamed the line into the microphone, doubling over with the force of his own voice. His once sleeping band mates jumped off of the couch, and fought to keep from falling onto the floor, only to lose the battle in a less than graceful decent to the cold concrete floor.
“Damn it, Kyo!” Toshiya yelled at the wildly grinning vocalist, as he struggled to get off his boyfriend. The red head simply laughed as the younger man tried with great difficulty to get off him and to keep from falling back onto him. Kaoru, apparently in one of his worse moods, went over and pulled Toshiya harshly off of the guitarist, effectively stopping any laughter, and shifting the mood to a much more tense and serious one. Die got up as carefully as he could; he knew that he would have to practice too, regardless of his condition. His fingers weren’t broken or missing, so he would have no reason not to be able to play.
“Kyo..?” Die asked, having taken notice to Kyo’s newest hat. “What possessed you to get THAT?” he said, pointing at the florescent green article on his friend’s head, a look of disgust growing plainly on the guitarist’s face.
“Oh, this?” Kyo said, pointing up at his hat, the grin on his face returning wider than before.
“Yeah, that.”
“Kyo, take it off.” As Kaoru said this, he earned a very disappointed look from the shorter man. “You know damn good and well you won’t be able to keep that thing on while you sing. You move around too much for that.” Kyo groaned at Kaoru’s bad temper. “Kyo. Now.”
“Okay, okay… gee… did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something?” Kyo said, as he reached up and began to pull off the clashing hat. Kaoru’s glare quickly faded when he began to see that Kyo’s hair had gone back to being black.
“Wow… did you decide that whatever had you down wasn’t worth looking like an old man?” Toshiya asked, not even caring if it was going to make anyone in the room upset… well, not knowing is more what it was. Die, having figured out why Kyo had done it in the first place shot an uneasy look to the bassist, but it went unnoticed by the younger man.
Practice went well after everyone was finally able to get started. They had to take frequent breaks on account of Die’s guitar causing some discomfort and a few other problems, but they managed to stay on track for the first time in a long time. No one seemed to have any problems with anyone, and things appeared to be going back to the way that they were before the band had separated for those few months.
“Kao-kao?” the eldest man gave a slight nod, while not looking away from his papers, to show that he had heard the bassist. “Do you think we could call it a day?” this got the guitarist’s attention, as he shot his eyes to Toshiya’s somewhat worried ones. “I… I don’t think Die is really ready for long practices yet.” He said this last statement only loud enough for the leader to hear him. The guitarist turned his attention over to see the red head sitting on the couch. Well, curled up on it would be more accurate of a description. He was cradling his chest as if in pain. “Please?” Kaoru looked back to Toshiya. “For Die’s sake? It wouldn’t be right to make him keep working when he is obviously hurting.” The older man sighed and nodded in agreement. Even he couldn’t stand to let the other guitarist suffer after everything he had been through. He didn’t say anything about it, though, until they were all back into their spots with their instruments on, or in Shinya’s case, in front of him… all except Kaoru, that is. He continued to sit at the table, and gave his band mates a questioning look.
“What are you guys doing?” he asked casually when everyone was in their normal waiting modes.
“Um… waiting on you so that we can continue practice.” Kyo said into his mic.
“You plan on waiting a while?” it was his band mates’ turns to send him the questioning looks. “Practice is over for today. Be back here and ready to go again at 3 tomorrow afternoon.” He turned and looked directly at Kyo for the next statement. “I will be accepting NO excuses for tardiness… you will have plenty of time for sleep before you actually have to be here.”
Toshiya was the first one to have his instrument back in it’s case, and put up for the night, though this was namely due to the fact that Kyo was still in too much shock to move. Shinya seemed as though he was questioning Kaoru’s health, without actually saying anything, and Die appeared to be beyond out of it. The bassist wasn’t sure which was a greater cause to his boyfriend’s state, the pain he was in, or the fact that Kaoru had just stopped practice three and a half hours early. What he was sure of, was that if he didn’t go over and help the older man, they would be there for a while.
Die jumped slightly when he felt his guitar making it’s way off his shoulder.
“Sorry. I didn’t hurt you, did I?” Toshiya said, his eyes almost tearing up though he hadn’t been answered yet.
“Huh? No, you didn’t. Why is Kaoru stopping for the day? He usually never dismisses this soon.” Toshiya managed to get the guitar off a very confused Die, but he was getting rather confused, too, by what he was hearing from the red head.
“You don’t want to stop? I mean, I’m sure his dismissing practice is because of the amount of pain you are obviously in, and he was just looking out for his band mates.”
“No, no, no… that’s not what I meant. I’m okay with stopping… the sooner the better. I’m just surprised he would have thought about something like that.”
“Hey, hurry up and go, before I change my mind. I’m starting to think that you don’t really want to go yet.” With that, the other four men quickly made their ways out of the room, almost seeming too scared to even bid Kaoru farewell for the day, as their “see you later”’s were more mumbled hurriedly, than actually said. Kyo and Shinya had even left their spots exactly as they were when he said that, not bothering to break the drums down, or put up the mic and stand. Toshiya had all but dropped Die’s guitar where they stood.
