A knock on the door aroused me from slumber. I could still feel Gerard wrapped around me; his soft breathing close to my ear. I gently moved away from his sleeping form and sat on the edge of the bed. The door opened, and Mikey poked his head in.
“We’re stopping for the night. The driver says he needs a break. You guys wanna go to dinner?” I wiped the sleep out of my eyes and ran a hand through my messy hair. I turned to look at Gerard. He was out. I didn’t know if I should wake him or not.
“Think we should wake him?” I asked Mikey, who had stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“Hey dipshit! Get up!” Mikey slapped Gerard’s sock covered foot. Gerard mushed his face into the pillow and groaned.
“We’re stopping for the night dude. Let’s get some dinner.” Gerard moaned again into the pillow and then rolled over lethargically. He squinted at the afternoon sun pouring in the window. He raised his head and looked over at me.
“Hey,” he said, flashing me a sleepy smile.
“Hey. Sleep well?” He nodded and grunted as he sat up and rubbed his eyes. His tousled hair hung over his face and was sticking to his right cheek.
“Where are we Mikey?” I stood up and stretched backwards, reaching up with my arms. I sighed and stepped around to the foot of the bed.
“Near Oklahoma City I think. The driver isn’t a man of many words.” Gerard nodded and raised his eyebrows. He slid down to the foot of the bed and stood up. Mikey left the room and I glanced over at the clock on the wall.
“Damn. It’s 7pm already?” It didn’t feel that late to me.
“Uh, I think that’s east coast time still. So it’s like 6pm here,” Gerard said as he yawned. I nodded and ran my hand through my hair again.
“I need a shower.” I bent down and pulled some clean clothes out of my bag.
“I do too. But you can go first.” Gerard went into the living room and sat down with the guys.
“Thank you.” I walked out and locked myself in the bathroom. Knowing Gerard wanted to shower after me, I couldn’t take as hot of one as I longed for. I made it quick but thorough, and got dressed before combing through my thick, wet tresses. I went back into the bedroom and sat on the bed to put on my makeup. I was tired of looking like an old hag from all the crying and shit, and I felt better once my face was on. I didn’t want to cry anymore; at least not any tears of pain. I emerged into the living room and sat on the sofa next to Mikey. Gerard was absent, so I guessed he was in the shower. The bus lurched and began to slow. I turned to look behind me out the window. We were pulling up next to a hotel in the heart of downtown.
“Are we staying here?” I asked, craning my neck to see the top of the enormous building. Huge red letters on the upper side of it read “RENAISSANCE.” It must have been about 15 stories high. I knew I had never stayed in such a grand place before.
“Yep. This is it.” Mikey nodded, glancing out the window and then over to me. I felt stupid for gawking like a child at the tall building, because I guessed that this sort of place was normal for the guys, but to me it was luxury. “Did you bring something more dressy casual to wear with you?” I shot Mikey a perplexed look.
“Why? Do you have to dress like a movie star to stay here?” He snickered and shook his head.
“No. But we found a really good restaurant on the internet across town to eat dinner at tonight, and I don’t think jeans and a tank top would cut it there.” I looked down self-consciously at my clothes and frowned. I thought about what I had in my duffle bag.
“Okay. I’ll go change. Thanks for letting me know.” I stood up and went into the bedroom. I sighed as I sat on the bed and bent over to rummage through my bag. I pulled out a pair of tight, black flare legged dress slacks and a black fitted sleeveless V-neck top, dotted with black sequins along the neckline. I figured they would work so I slipped them on. I pulled a pair of dressy black sandals from my bag and thanked God I had gotten a pedicure a few days earlier as I slipped into them. I looked at my reflection in the full length mirror on the back of the closet door and fooled with my hair. It was still wet, and I didn’t want to leave it like that. I traipsed into the living room and asked if any of the guys had a hairdryer. Three pairs of eyes drenched me with stares as I stood there, feeling like I was naked. I tried to ignore them, but Mikey and Bob’s mouths were gaped open, and it was a little hard to concentrate.
“Does anyone have a hairdryer I can use?” Bob just shook his head. Ray finally broke his gaze away from me and pointed to Mikey. Mikey just kept looking at me up and down.
“Mikey? Hello?” I waved my hand in front of his face.
“Umm, yeah. It’s under the sink in the bathroom.” I nodded and turned to go back into the bedroom. I sat down and waited for Gerard to get done with his shower. When I heard him come out, I stood up. But he came through the door before I could get to it. My eyes grew huge with surprise. He had a towel wrapped around his waist and he was soaking wet. His hair was stuck to his face; droplets of water trailing from the ends down his cheeks and neck. When he looked up and saw me, his eyes widened in shock too. He looked at me, all dressed up, standing there looking at him, not dressed at all. He had a different look in his eyes I’d not seen in them before as he scraped them over my body.
“I’m sorry. Umm…let me get out of your way.” I fumbled my words as I moved past him and out into the hall. I went into the bathroom and blew my hair dry. I pulled the sides up into a hair stick and pulled streamers of hair down to frame my face. I smudged some more eyeliner around my eyes for a more intense “evening look” and decided, after one last look in the mirror, that I wasn’t gonna get any better looking that night. When I came out of the bathroom, everyone but Frank was sitting in the living room waiting for me. They had all changed into dressy casual outfits, and all of them looked very sharp. Gerard caught my attention the most. He wore tight black jeans, a black dress shirt and a ¾ length black velvet suit jacket. He was ultra sexy. I shot him a sexy half smile and slightly raised an eyebrow as I perused his body with my stare.
“We ready to go?” Ray asked, standing up from his seat at the small kitchen table and I smiled as Gerard approached me and offered me his arm.
“Is Frank going too?” I asked as we headed for the door.
“He’s still asleep,” Bob said. I thought Frank’s sudden change in behaviour was extremely odd, and actually missed how sweet he had been to me the past two days.
When we got outside, we were in an underground parking deck. We walked up a slight incline and out onto the sidewalk. A black stretch limo was parked at the curb. Gerard led me over to it and opened the back door. I looked at him in shock, not expecting to be riding to dinner in a limo. He just gave me a wink and that sly smile of his and motioned for me to climb inside. The other guys followed, and Gerard got in last, sitting beside me and closing the door. I had never been inside a limo, and felt like an excited school girl on prom night. Our ride was about twenty minutes long, and Gerard held my arm linked with his the entire time. He saw the excited glow about me, and smiled at me with a look of satisfaction on his face. He was taking me out on our first date, but I hadn’t a clue at the time. With three other guys with us, I didn’t see how it could be a date between him and me alone. We arrived at the front of the restaurant and the limo glided to a smooth stop. The backlit letters on the side of the building read “Deep Fork Grill” in a soft white glow. Gerard stepped out of the limo and offered his hand to me as I stepped out after him. Again, he offered his arm as the others got out and we walked inside to be seated.
“Good evening. Welcome to the Deep Fork Grill,” the hostess said, greeting us with a big smile and nod. Gerard took the lead and spoke to her.
“Reservations for Gerard Way, party of five.” The woman checked her clipboard and smiled as she picked up five menus and politely asked us to follow her into the dining area. She entered a room at the back of the restaurant that I guessed was reserved for larger parties and sat us at a table big enough to seat fifteen people.
“Your server will be with you momentarily. Enjoy your meal.” The guys began surveying their menus as I sat and gazed at my surroundings. The room had a large stone fireplace and vaulted wooden beam ceilings. The table was immaculate with a fine white linen tablecloth and three vases of fresh cut flowers. The china was exquisite and the silverware appeared to be real sterling silver. I was uber impressed. I read over my menu and couldn’t believe the delicious meals they had to offer; appetizers of Blue Point crab claws, lobster and caviar, calamari and ravioli. Entrees like orange glazed duck breast, veal, rack of lamb, Steak Diane and lobster tail. It took me forever to decide what I wanted, but I finally settled on what they called the “PTL,” pork tenderloin with dried apricot glaze, sesame whipped potatoes and wood grilled broccoli. Our server arrived with two baskets of bread and took our drink orders. I was rather nervous and felt like having a stiff brandy or scotch to calm my nerves, but I settled instead for a Diet Coke.
“How do you like this place?” Gerard leaned over and spoke softly in my ear.
“It’s beautiful. I’ve never been anywhere as nice as this.” He smiled and squeezed my hand under the table.
“Frank’s missing out man,” Bob said, biting into a steaming hot roll.
“I don’t know why he didn’t want to come.” Ray said, shrugging and picking up a slice of toasted rye bread. Mikey just shook his head and looked down at the table. I sensed that he knew something no one else did. I saw it in his eyes. “I asked him to two different times but he just flipped me off and told me to leave him alone.”
“He probably misses his woman,” Bob said, snickering and shaking his head. Mikey looked away across the room and fondled his fork nervously. I noticed that Gerard hadn’t said a word, but saw him intensely observing everyone during the conversation. I wondered if he knew the same thing Mikey did or if he was still miffed about the things Frank had said about me. When the server returned with our drinks, he took our orders and quickly left again. I felt like Frank didn’t come with us because he didn’t like me, and still felt like I shouldn’t be there with them at all. But if that was true, then why didn’t anyone else seem to feel that way towards me? He had been the only one to start out being nice, and then turn into an asshole. I decided I should talk to him when I had the chance to get him alone. I may not have been welcome there by him, but I deserved to at least know why. When our food arrived, we ate quietly, and every now and then someone would comment on how scrumptious the meal was. When we were through, the server offered dessert, which all of us but Bob declined, and he then brought coffee for everyone. I never understood the reasoning behind having after dinner coffee, but it was delicious to me and I drank every drop. An after dinner brandy I got, but coffee? Whatever. When the server brought our bill, Gerard motioned for him to leave it next to him. He pulled out his wallet and placed a black American Express card in the small folder. The server nodded and left again. I knew of the black AmEx cards from an article in a magazine that talked about how owners of the card had to be “invited” by American Express to have one and were really only given to celebrities. Apparently they have no limit on what you can buy, and it is obviously very easy for celebrities to pay off the extremely high bills they incur with ease. According to the article though, the card was actually a rumor until American Express decided to capitalize on it and actually start making a card of the rumored stature. All I knew was that I didn’t have one and didn’t want one because of the $1000 and up fees that went along with the privilege of owning one, so the magazine article stated.
“Thank you Gerard,” I whispered, taking his hand and squeezing it. He turned to me and I smiled sweetly. He smiled in return, and winked at me as he rested his stare on my upturned lips.
“You’re welcome,” he said, a sexy tone dancing on his words. “Did you enjoy it?”
“Yes, very much,” I nodded, drinking the last sips of my coffee and sitting the cup back down. Our server came back and Gerard signed the bill.
“It was a pleasure gentlemen and lady,” he said, nodding politely at me as he spoke, “We hope you’ll visit us again soon.”
“Thank you,” Gerard said, smiling and handing the bill holder back to the man. He bowed and hurried from the room.
“Thanks Gerard,” Bob said, and Gerard nodded in response.
“Yeah, it was great. Thanks.” Ray smiled and nodded at Gerard.
“Thank you,” Mikey said softly, still visibly concerned about something. The longer I saw him acting that way, the more curious I became as to why he was doing it. Just then, Gerard squeezed my hand as he moved to get up, and I was brought out of my thoughts and back into reality. We left and got back into the awaiting limo.
“What now guys? What do you feel like doing?” Gerard asked once we were all seated inside.
“I don’t care man. Whatever you feel like doing.” Bob threw his hands up and shook his head.
“You feel like going to a club baby?” The only word I heard from Gerard’s lips was “baby.” He hadn't said that to me before, and I was taken aback by the sound of it resonating off his tongue. I knew the look on my face was one of shock, but I didn’t say anything for a moment. A warm and fuzzy feeling crept up inside of me though.
“What?” I finally said quietly.
“Do you want to go to a club?” Gerard repeated his words, without the “baby” this time.
“Oh. Um, sure. Whatever you guys wanna do.” I shrugged and looked at each of the guys expectantly. They all shook their heads and shrugged as well.
“Okay. A club then.” Gerard pressed a button on the armrest beside him and spoke into a small intercom to the driver.
“Can you take us to the best night club in town please?”
“Yes sir,” a voice bellowed back, and Gerard let go of the button and turned to me and smiled. I returned it, and he put his arm around me and pulled me into his side. I caught Mikey’s stare before he had the chance to avert it, and saw a look of disappointment cross his face. That was it. I was going to talk to him if I could get him alone long enough in the club.
