Gerard was sitting on Autumn’s floor, smoking furiously. He was joined by Ryan, Frank and Autumn herself, who had quit smoking a few years ago, but decided that it was the perfect time to start up again.
Mikey and Bob were sitting on the bed.
No one was thinking much past the fact that Ray was dead. He was dead. That was the end. He’d been stabbed by the spear of a Vengeance Demon. It was a mind fuck that none of them had quite grasped all the way.
They turned to the door as tiny footsteps scuttled past it. They had been going by fairly regularly for the last hour, alternating with scratching at the door and a few knocks.
“We could just call the cops.” Ryan said.
Mikey laughed, his recent experience with San Bernardino’s finest fresh in his mind, “Right. ‘Hello Detective Castillo please? Yes, I have your murderer! He’s a six inch tall wooden doll that my friend brought from South
America. Yes, I wear a six in straight jacket.’” He rolled his eyes.
Autumn couldn’t help the laugh she snorted. There had been so little funny recently that she would take what she could get, “They would probably just take Mikey in again.” She sighed and stubbed out her cigarette, lighting another one immediately after.
Mikey hauled himself off the bed and took it from her, taking a deep drag. He coughed, but sat with them on the ash covered carpet and didn’t give it back.
Gerard arched an eyebrow at him, but decided that now wasn’t the time to remind his little brother that smoking was going to aggravate his asthma.
“We can’t fucking stay here forever.” Frank said, “I say we make a break for it. We lock all the doors and
windows and burn the fucking place down.”
“The whole house?” Bob asked, “And let’s just say we manage not to go to prison for life for a felony arson. What then?”
Frank shrugged.
“Why haven’t you called whoever gave you the doll and asked them how to get rid of it?” Autumn asked Bob suddenly.
Bob sighed and hung his head, “Because I got it from a village in the rainforest that doesn’t exactly have phones and my friend who lives there only gets near a phone about once a month.” He looked back at them, “Trust me, I thought of that.”
Autumn shrieked when she heard more scratching at the door, “Damnit! He’s just fucking with us! He’s sitting out there trying to freak us out and its fucking working!” she stood up and began to pace, a human locomotive with a puff of smoke coming from her mouth every other step. She paused at the window to stare out at the darkened skies.
She stopped and turned to the door when the scratching turned into a pounding.
They all screamed like girls when a spear broke through, splintering the wood. Frankie was going to break the door down.
“Oh shit!” Frank jumped off the floor and went to Autumn’s window, “Come on! We can climb down here and just book it!” he kicked out the screen and threw one leg out, “Come on!” he jumped down to the patio, jarring his ankles. Autumn went next and Frank caught her, cushioning her fall. Mikey jumped, Bob and Gerard followed.
Ryan was in the process of jumping when Frankie broke through. The demon grabbed Ryan by the hair and tried to yank him back in the window.
Ryan kicked out at him, knocking the wooden thing back a pace, releasing his hold on the boy’s hair. He yelled as he fell out the window, landing hard on the cement below and knocking the wind out of him.
Gerard picked him up, “Are you alright? Come on baby. We have to go!” they made their way around the yard, hearing the demon land on the ground with a solid thump.
They reached the driveway and Autumn started to laugh hysterically.
All five of their cars had the hoods popped and bits of engine scattered around them.
“Mother FUCK!” Frank screamed, “What now?”
“Run!” Bob yelled as he saw Frankie round the house.
They took off down the street. Gerard and Ryan were seriously falling behind because the younger man was limping severely.
“Go! Fucking leave me Gee!” Ryan cried when he stumbled and fell.
“I’m not leaving you!” Gerard said and picked his boyfriend back up, supporting him so they could resume their flight. He looked behind him and saw giant Frankie gaining on them, “Move baby! Move!”
They limped up the street following the others as they ran for the mini mart.
Bob noticed that Gerard and Ryan had fallen way behind. He stopped, “Guys! Gee’s back there!”
“Fuck!” Mikey turned around and meant to head back to help his brother carry his boyfriend.
Frankie appeared in front of them and started chasing them down a side street toward the park. Bob started falling behind the group. Frankie steered him down yet another side street in the direction of an empty field.
Gerard looked around frantically. Frankie was no longer following them, but he had lost sight of his friends.
Ryan was panting next to him, clutching his hip.
“Where’d they go?” He gasped.
Gerard shook his head, “I don’ know. We need to get moving before that thing comes back.”
Ryan nodded and took one step forward, directly into Frankie’s spear. He gasped and his eyes widened in surprise. Blood bubbled out of his mouth and he slid off the spear onto his knees.
“Run.” He whispered to Gerard.
Ryan’s word broke his paralysis and Gerard stopped staring in horror at the scene in front of him. Moving just in time as Frankie took a swing at him, missing his flesh, but cutting his shirt. He took off down the streets in random directions, hearing wooden footsteps behind him the whole way.
“Holy fuck.” Gerard breathed as he crouched behind an ugly red SUV. He panted, trying to catch his breath and look in every direction at once. The stitch in his side stabbed painfully and he thought absurdly how far he’d run in how long and surely his old gym teacher would have been proud to see him book it those last few blocks.
What the fuck was going on? This shit couldn’t really be fucking happening could it? Things like this only happened in video games or horror movies. He couldn’t remember how it started, or when, his only thought now was to hide.
And what happened to the others? He’d lost them, well, it seemed like forever ago. He hoped they were alright. Especially his little brother.
Gerard looked down at the cut across his t-shirt, shuddering at how close he’d come to meeting the same fate as Ray and Ryan.
Ray, poor Ray. Gerard almost wished he believed in heaven so he could think of his friend with angels or some such shit.
And Ryan! He’d loved that man, and now he was gone too.
But there wasn’t any time to think about that now. There wasn’t any time for thinking about anything other than surviving until daylight.
He thought he heard something from a couple of streets over, but his heart was pounding so loudly in his ears, he couldn’t really hear much of anything.
Realizing this, he suddenly felt very exposed hiding behind the stupid Hummer and moved from behind it, still in his crouch. Awkwardly duck walking toward the dubious safety of the field, he tried to look everywhere at once, straining his eyes to see in the dark, and even doing so, he never saw what slammed into him knocking him to the ground.
It was Bob. He was stabbed repeated and blood leaked from a wound in his neck.
“Bob!” Gerard hissed, tears blurring his vision as he laid his friend down in the field, “Oh not you too.” He wept.
Bob was fading fast. It was all he could do to hand Gerard his cell phone before the life left his eyes and he went totally limp.
Gerard looked at the phone stupidly until he realized it was connected. He put the phone to his ear, “Hello?” he whispered.
“What’s going on? Where’s Bob?” a voice said on the other end.
“Bob’s gone.” Gerard sniffed.
“What?”
“The Vengeance Demon got him.”
“Oh shit! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Who made a blood sacrifice to him?” the voice asked, sounding torn between anger and tears.
“Me and my brother and two more people.” Gerard said, staring at the street.
“Well the four of you have to get together and offer more blood. Then you have to say, ‘Eu emito-lhe para trás a seu estado dormir.’ And it HAS to be all of you. It should transform back to a doll.” The man sniffled, “I told Bob to be careful with it.”
Gerard didn’t know what to say. He was saved from having to reply though as Frankie charged into the field, homing in on Gerard. He stuffed the phone in his pocket and ran.
