First and foremost, thanks to everyone who has reviewed! It's a real inspiration to keep writing when people tell me what they think! So thank you very much! Next up, I know some of you are anxious for me to update so I've decided to post a link to my LiveJournal on here. I post there pretty regularly and include progress reports I guess of how the story is going lol. In case you want to check it out: http://mementoxxmori.livejournal.com. Feel free to add me as well if you have an LJ. I want to get it out of the way now that when I first started working on this chapter I was really struggling with it and not making a lot of progress very quickly. Amidst my struggles, I feared that this would be a filler chapter and I didn't like that idea very much but now that it's completed I can appreciate it for what it is. I guess since I finished that last chapter so quickly I for some unknown reason got frustrated when this one didn't come out as smoothly. But please let me know how you guys feel about it regardless! Thanks!
Kyo stood motionless, his stupefied gaze lingering on the doorway.
"Let's go home" he said gruffly to Hitomi before stalking out the door.
Kaoru glanced in the rear view mirror at the occupants of the back seat. Tristan had Jae cradled against his side, his arms wrapped around her securely. She had stopped crying moments ago, whether it was because she wanted to stop or simply because she had tired herself out Kaoru wasn't sure. Her arms were draped loosely around Tristan's waist, her head resting on his shoulder. Her eyes were closed and she seemed to be asleep. Tristan's chin was lightly resting atop her head and he absentmindedly stroked her hair as he stared into the abyss of darkness. Kaoru returned his gaze to the road as he once again tried to wrap his mind around what had just occurred. He found he was still too shocked, his mind didn't deal well with spontaneity as it was, so this was nothing short of a mind fuck for him.
"She's asleep" Tristan's quiet voice broke through Kaoru's thoughts. He still didn't trust his own voice so he nodded in response. He stole another glance in the rear view mirror and saw Tristan staring back at him. "Are you okay?"
Kaoru almost laughed. Tristan, who quite possibly just lost the father he never had the chance to get to know, was asking him if he was okay. "I think I should ask you the same thing."
Tristan shugged his free shoulder. "I have to be. Mom is going to need me."
"Tristan, no one expects you to shoulder this all by yourself. I'll be here to help you every step of the way, as will the rest of the guys. We're not about to let you go through this all alone. Besides, you and your mom are very strong-willed people. You should give yourselves more credit." He couldn't be sure but he thought he noticed Tristan's eyes glistening with unshed tears. The boy quickly averted his eyes, turning them to gaze out the window once more. Kaoru pulled into the driveway and shut the car off, twisting in his seat so he could talk to Tristan. "Do you want me to carry her in?"
"Yeah just let me wake her up first." He gave his mom a gentle shake. "Mom....Mom wake up..we're home." Jae groaned a little as she stirred. She looked up at Tristan with sleep-laden, puffy eyes, which were still a light shade of red from crying. Her head jerked to the side when her door opened, revealing Kaoru.
"C'mon let's get you inside" he said as he picked her up and started to lift her from the car.
"I can walk you know" she teased lightly as she slid her arms around his neck.
"I'd rather carry you" he replied before giving her a quick peck on the forehead. She fell slack against him as if the small interaction sapped any energy she had left. Tristan walked ahead of them, opening the door so they could enter. Kaoru walked into the den, placing Jae on the couch. "I'll make some tea" he said softly before turning and heading back to the kitchen.
When he returned, he found her laying down curled up in a ball, cuddling against the couch cushions. He thought she looked so small and fragile then, giving him the urge to curl up around her and protect her from the world. Of course he knew she was anything but fragile. She was quite possibly the strongest woman he'd ever met, yet he found himself unable to resist the urge to comfort her when she obviously needed it. Her pride would prevent her from asking it of him, insisting she needed to be strong for Tristan. Kaoru wouldn't deny her anything, especially not the things he knew she needed but was too proud to ask for. Setting the cups down on the table, he laid down behind her, circling his arms around her waist. She turned to face him, sliding her arms up around his neck and burying her face into his chest. He felt her draw in a ragged breath and knew she was trying to prevent herself from crying. One of his hands moved up to rub her back.
"It's okay to cry you know" he whispered to her. She pulled back to look up at him, revealing her tear-streaked face. She shook her head.
"I don't want to cry. I don't want to be weak. I can't afford to be weak. This all could've been avoided if I would have just listened to you. I'm sorry." She wiped at her face angrily.
He grasped her chin and tilted her face up so he could look her directly in the eyes. "Hey...you apologize to no one. You handled this situation the way you felt was best so don't you dare for one second think that you should apologize for it.You are anything but weak, you're one of the strongest people I know so don't you ever let anyone tell you or make you feel otherwise" he said sternly.
She sniffled and smiled at him before reaching up to cup his face in her hands. "Why are you so good to me?"
He turned his head so he could place a kiss on each of her palms. "Because you deserve it and because...I love you." He looked at her nervously.
Her smile widened and she leaned up to kiss him softly. "I love you too" she whispered against his lips. They were interrupted by a knock at the back door. Jae shot him a questioning look and he shrugged, signaling he had no idea who it was either. The flicker of hope that danced in her eyes didn't go unnoticed by him and it saddened him to think that she might be let down when that door would open to reveal someone other than Kyo. He made a move to get up but stopped when he heard Tristan telling them he would get the door. He settled for pulling them both up into sitting positions as they waited to find out who had come to visit them.
Tristan pulled open the door, revealing Shinya, Toshiya, Die, and Axelle. He blinked slowly and let out a nervous laugh. "Um...hi guys."
Shinya offered him a warm smile. "May we come in?"
He shook his head and pushed the screen door open, moving back so they could come inside. "Of course, I didn't mean to be rude."
Shinya smiled again as he walked past him into the house. Toshiya gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze before following Shinya into the other room. Die gave him a nod and a pat on the back and Axelle hugged him tightly.
"How are you holding up?" she asked quietly.
Tristan returned her hug and sighed deeply. "I don't think the magnitude of what happened between us has fully sunk in yet. It's the only thing I can think about but it still feels so surreal, like at any moment he will come walking through the door and we'll talk and everything will be fine. Pretty stupid huh?"
"No. It's not stupid to want a relationship with your father Tristan."
"Maybe not, but it's naive to think there can be anything between my parents, especially now. I should've just kept my mouth shut. I got so angry seeing him verbally attacking her like that. I refuse to put up with people treating my mother with such disrespect, it's unacceptable. It was like I was seeing all my hopes for our future shattering right before my eyes and something inside me snapped. I know I said a lot of things purely out of anger and I think Dad did too. I guess we're similar in that respect."
"I believe that Kyo did say some things out of anger. He cares for your mom very much, I realized that within moments of seeing them together. They share a special bond and even though it may seem that their relationship is beyond repair now, I honestly believe they'll work through this." She gave him a small smile and a gentle squeeze.
"I hope you're right."
"You don't think they will be able to overcome this?"
Tristan detached himself from her. "I don't know what I think anymore" he said quietly and started walking towards the living room. Axelle watched his retreating back with sad eyes before following him.
Upon entering the living room, Axelle saw everyone seated in various furniture around the room. She crawled into Die's lap and his arms encircled her waist. She noticed that Jae looked wan, her entire body reclining limply against Kaoru as if he were the only thing keeping her upright.
"I hate to be a bad host, but it's been quite an eventful night. I think I'm going to try and get some sleep." She gave everyone a weak smile and headed towards her room.
"I second that" Tristan said with a yawn as he trudged towards the staircase.
Once she was sure Tristan and Jae were in their rooms, Axelle spoke up. "So when are we going to get Kyo's sorry ass and bring him back here?"
Kaoru, always the voice of reason, cut in. "We're not going to go get him. He's still pissed off and I don't want anything else happening due to raw emotions."
"What?! So we're just supposed to wait on him to make a move?" Toshiya exclaimed.
"C'mon Toto, you know how Kyo is. If we try to force his hand it will only make matters worse." Toshiya sulked but nodded in agreement.
"But what happens if he doesn't come back?" Die inquired.
"He will. He loves her too much to just walk away." Everyone turned to look at Axelle. She attempted to cuddle further into Die, not liking the way they were all gawking at her. Die chuckled into her hair. "What? Why are you all staring at me like that?" she asked with a nervous laugh.
"Sorry. We didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, Ash. It's just that you'd only met Jae a few days ago, yet you seem so confident about her and Kyo being able to work through this. How can you be so sure?" Shinya explained.
"You guys just met her too and you have what..a week or two on me? Don't tell me you don't see it. They love each other!" She stopped and gave Kaoru an apologetic look. "Sorry Kao, that's probably not something you wanted to hear. But don't you guys agree?"
Kaoru waved his hand dismissively. "It's ok Ash I realize probably more than anyone how much they love each other. But we have to let them work this out on their own. I know the day will come when I will have to let her go. However, until then, the only thing we can do is be here for her and Tristan."
"What about my Dad? Who's going to be there for him?" Tristan's voice, thick with sleep, suddenly interrupted.
"We'll be there for him too. We're not going to desert him. I figure we'll take turns going to see him" Shinya replied, seemingly unaffected by the fact that that the boy had overheard their discussion.
Tristan stifled a yawn and padded into the room, flopping down between Toshiya and Shinya on the couch. "Thanks Shinya, I think he will need you guys more than we will seeing as how his only company will be Hitomi." He made a face after he said her name and Toshiya laughed before patting him on the back.
"My sentiments exactly" he said with a toothy grin.
"So I take it you guys are planning on staying with us for awhile?" Tristan asked as his eyes scanned over everyone.
"Well...that's up to you and your mom. But we were thinking something along those lines" Shinya answered as he smiled at the boy.
Tristan smiled back. "Well I think Die and Axelle can stay in the guest room but you and Toshiya will have to stay in my room. I don't know how long you guys will be here but we can rotate on who gets the bed." He smiled at them both.
Die couldn't resist the urge to tease. "What about Kaoru? Where will he sleep?" he asked innocently with a smirk directed at Kaoru.
"Well...with my mom of course" Tristan replied as both he and Kaoru blushed. Die burst out laughing at the sight and was soon joined by everyone else.
"Alright you guys...what's so funny?" Everyone stopped laughing and looked at Jae who was leaning against the doorway with a small smile on her face.
"Sorry..did we wake you?" Die asked sheepishly.
"Not at all. I was wide awake most of the time. I decided to check on Tristan but he wasn't in his room so I figured he was down here."
"I was getting ready to head back upstairs Mom. I told everyone they were more than welcome to stay here for awhile. That's okay right?" He gave her a hopeful look.
"Of course dear. I trust you figured out the sleeping arrangements too?" She smiled knowingly at her son. He nodded and relayed them to her. "Sounds good to me. Now how about you go back upstairs and try to get some sleep. You've got to get up early tomorrow so you can be ready when Ayumi's mom comes to pick you up."
"I know..I'm going. Night everyone." Tristan got up and made his way back to his room.
Shinya glanced at Toshiya. "Maybe we should go to bed now too so we don't disturb him later." Toshiya agreed and they went upstairs to join Tristan. Everyone else followed suit and headed upstairs as well.
Kaoru, Jae, Die, and Axelle were standing in the hallway in front of the doors to their rooms. Suddenly Die picked Axelle up bridal style and she giggled before kissing him.
Jae bit back a chuckle as she cleared her throat. "Behave you two" she said in her stern motherly voice.
"Yeah, no sex in the guest room. We can't see it so we sure as hell better not be able to hear it" Kaoru added in much the same tone but they were both smirking at the younger couple.
"Don't worry, we won't be too loud Leader-sama" Die remarked with a grin.
"Good. Otherwise Jae and I will just have to be louder." Jae reached out and playfully smacked him on the arm and he chuckled as he slid his arms around her waist and ushered her into their room.
Shinya awoke sometime later to the sound of sniffling coming from the bed. Sliding out of his sleeping bag, he crept over to the bed quietly.
Jae was roused from her sleep by a nagging feeling that something was wrong. She got out of bed carefully, so as not to wake Kaoru. She left the room and headed towards Tristan's to check on him. She quietly pushed his door open and her heart broke at the sight that greeted her eyes. Tristan was sobbing in Shinya's arms as he cooed words of comfort in the boy's ear. Toshiya was on the other side rubbing Tristan's back soothingly. She walked the short distance and got down on her knees in front of her son. She reached out and took his hand in her own. He quickly pulled away from Shinya and flung himself into her arms.
"I want my Dad!" he wailed as he clung to his mother, sobbing violently into her neck. She held the boy with ease but her heart thudded painfully against her ribcage as silent tears flowed from her eyes. They fell into a sitting position and she began rocking him back and forth and singing to him softly. It was a song she used to sing to him when he was an infant. It always calmed him and she hoped it still had the same effect. By now Kaoru, Die, and Axelle had gathered in the doorway but their concerned faces remained a blur to Jae. The only thing she was concentrating on was calming her son. Soon his sobs died down but she continued to sing and rock him. It wasn't long after that his breathing evened out, signaling he had fallen asleep.
"Kao could you put him back into bed please?" she whispered.
He nodded and moved into the room, carefully picking Tristan up and tucking him into bed. Jae got up and left the room, quickly moving back into her own. Kaoru followed her and upon entering found her crying. He took one look at her eyes and could tell that she wasn't crying because she was sad, but because she was angry.
"If Kyo wants to hate me for the rest of his life then so be it, but he will NOT abandon his son!" she hissed.
She wiped at her tears furiously. Kaoru bridged the ditance between them and pulled her into his arms, hoping to calm her frayed nerves.
"Tomorrow I want you to take Tristan to see Kyo."
He was smart enough not to protest, not now anyway. "Of course" he replied quietly as he maneuvered her over to the bed. "I think we should get some rest."
She nodded and laid down. He slid into bed next to her, encircling his arms around her and pulling her against him. She laced her fingers with his and pulled their hands up to rest over her heart. He could almost feel the anger coursing through her veins. In the morning he would voice his concern about Tristan going to see Kyo.
