It was still light out when we finished all the paperwork to have me discharged. Frank wrapped an arm around me to lead me down the hall before stopping in front a girl with red and black hair and hazel eyes, who was in the middle of charging a boy with dark hair and golden brown eyes. His back was to her so she easily hit him and knocked him into a few of the waiting room chairs.
“Christ Becks!” he yelled as they broke into laughter. “That fucking hurt.”
“You have to be ready for anything, Steve, seriously,” she giggled before helping him up. He shook his head and straightened the chairs before noticing us.
“Oh! Frank, hey,” he said with a nod before shaking my hand. “I’m assuming you’re Lizzi? I’m Steve.”
“Hi Steve,” I said with a nod.
“And I’m Rebecca,” the girl smiled, “but no one calls me that. You can call me Becks.”
“Nice to meet you both,” I said with a nod.
“Any news?” Frank asked as we all walked outside of the hospital and toward the parking lot where I spotted Frank’s car and an van.
“No sightings of them,” Steve shrugged. “Listen, we’ve been trying to track them for years, and we’re the best in the business, it’s going to be difficult. The most we can do is watch you two, and,” he stopped for a moment, “...never mind.”
“No, you can finish... Watch us and what?” Frank asked, unlocking the car.
I flashed Frank a look, I understood. “Watch us and wait, Frank... Gerard wants me... I’m the best way to get to them, I’m the bait...”
“Listen, we’re not going to use to as bait, but yes, they are tracking you... That’s one of the biggest hopes in finding them,” Steve nodded.
“We could use her as bait...” Becks noted, talking secretively, so no one else in the lot would hear.
“NO!” Frank yelled, as Steve motioned for him to lower his voice. “No,” he said softer, “I’m not letting you put Liz in fucking danger! That’s the point of hiring you all! I don’t want Gerard to so much as look at her,” he growled lowly.
“We’d be close to her, in hiding... It would be like a sting operation... Get them close and ambush them,” Becks explained calmly.
“No,” Frank said again. “You weren’t there! You haven’t seen what they can do, what they’re capable of. They’re too strong... I’m not going to risk Lizzi to Gerard,” he said again. “She almost died... Do you not understand that!?”
“She understands,” Steve said, putting a hand on Frank’s chest to get him to back off a bit.
I looked over at Frank, “They’re right though... I’m the best bait we have...”
Frank gave me a surprised expression, “Lizzi, what?”
“I should do it,” I continued. “I mean, come on Frank, what other options do we have? They’ll find me sooner or later, let’s at least have a plan... You think they don’t know we probably got some help against them? You think they don’t know they need to be stealthy and unseen? Gerard’s hotheaded though... If he sees me, or knows where I am, he’ll come after me, no matter what the risk....” I said.
“Liz, no... I don’t want you doing this...” Frank said, looking pale and distressed.
“Listen,” Steve started, “lets all go back to the hotel... You two can discuss it there and just mull over the option, while Becks and I discuss it on our end... deal?”
I nodded, “That’s logical.”
“We’ll be right behind you,” Becks added, motioning to the van next to us.
Frank and I got into his car and he started the engine. “You could get killed... or he could... he could rape you again,” he said, the last part soft, like he didn’t want to say the word out loud. “I don’t want him to touch you, to hurt you,” he said honestly, his eyes pleading with me to forget about the whole thing.
I pulled him in for a quick kiss. “Franky, if I don’t do this.. He will find me, and he will hurt me,” I whispered. “We can actually get him this way...”
Frank shook his head and said nothing before pulling out of the lot. The rest of the drive was very somber and quiet.
