Bam stared at his feet. He was sitting in the stands for once. His breathed plumed out in front of him. Just being in here, smelling the cold, sharp air and hearing the way the blades sliced through the ice made his heart start pounding.
He wanted to be out there. He wanted to lace up and slide out onto the ice. He wanted to chase a puck, shoulder people out of the way so they could kiss the ice. He wanted to score goal after goal after goal.
In short, he did not much want to be sitting there on the sides.
There weren’t very many people out. When they had met in the lobby (with no kiss hello. Bam didn’t know if he was relieved or sad.) Ville said that mainly people came here this morning to practice their routines.
They looked pretty out there, graceful, Bam would admit. Mostly girls in tiny leotards, spinning on their toes. They laughed and twirled, skated backwards. There was no music playing, and so everything seemed just the tiniest bit off kilter.
Bam squirmed. Where was Ville? When was he coming out? By some signal that Bam didn’t catch, the girls all cleared the ice. He was confused until he heard some soft music start playing.
Maybe it’s intuition,
But some things you just don’t question.
Like in your eyes,
I see my future in an instant,
And there it goes.
I think I found my best friend.
Ville appeared. He skated out slowly, arms spread wide, almost like he wanted to hug someone. He skated to the very center of the rink and stopped, heels together.
I know that it might sound more than a little crazy,
But I believe.
I knew I loved you before I met you.
I think I dreamed you into life.
I knew I loved you before I met you.
I have been waiting all my life.
He turned, spun fast, like a ballet dancer. Bam’s breath caught in his throat. The boy was up on his very tip toes. Now he spun fast, making a wide circle around the rink before turning and going backwards.
There’s just no rhyme or reason.
Only the sense of completion.
And in your eyes,
I see the missing pieces I’m searching for.
I think I found my way home.
I know that it might sound more than a little crazy,
But I believe.
Now he was turning again, skating towards the center. He took three large leaps, ending on a spin. He didn’t stop, but continued on backwards, moving his hips as he did so in time to the music.
He looked towards the stands and saw Bam. Their eyes locked and the corners of his lips lifted in a slow smile.
I knew I loved you before I met you.
I think I dreamed you into life.
I knew I loved you before I met you.
I have been waiting all my life.
A thousand angels dance you.
I am complete now that I’ve found you.
He was leaping again when they began to sing about the angels. He landed on the toe of one foot, the other leg extended gratefully. He then took a few spinning leaps. Bam marveled. How did he do this without getting dizzy?
I knew I loved you before I met you.
I think I dreamed you into life.
I knew I loved you before I met you.
I have been waiting all my life.
I knew I loved you before I met you…
As the song faded out, Ville returned to the center of the ice. He fell to one knee, arms wide open, head bowed. It was almost as though he were begging for something he wanted very much, but knew he probably wouldn’t get.
When the music was over, the spell seemed to be broken. Bam couldn’t help it. He stood up and applauded.
“Just a run through, darling!” Ville cried.
“That was great, that was great!” Bam insisted. The Finn chuckled and skated a few figure eights.
“Why don’t you strap on some blades and come on out here with me?”
“I don’t think so.” Bam made a face. He wanted to go back out onto the ice, true. But he wanted to do it with a stick and a team of sweaty guys.
“Oh, okay.” Ville shrugged. Bam watched him skate around, trying a few jumps and spins here and there, spotting a few of the girls as they went through whatever they were doing.
Bam’s eyes narrowed as he watched the girls with the Finn. They were touching his arm, flipping their hair and giggling. Ville smiled back and played up to it, just a little bit. But his own eyes seemed to keep straying back to Bam.
It made a warm feeling blossom in his stomach. He felt himself blushing.
It was only about another hour before Ville preciously made his way next to the hockey player on the stands. He bent down and began to undo his laces.
“You were really good.”
“I guess,” Ville shrugged, a blush rising on his cheeks. Bam was sitting very close for him. His arm started itching; he wanted to slip it around the figure skater. He wanted to hold him tightly like he had last night.
“You should really try it sometime.”
“I don’t think so.” Bam said slowly. “I play hockey.”
“Figure skating could make it easier for you. You could learn to dodge the people and spin and stuff.”
“I don’t know,” Bam shrugged. Ville was looking up at him, their eyes locked. Their faces were getting closer and closer together.
“Hey! What are you two doing here?” Mige asked loudly, causing them to jump a mile apart.
