Naida stood in the middle of the warehouse sized room in the basement of Bryar Enterprises with her arms crossed, shaking her head. “You can’t stop me, Bill. I’m serious about this.”
“So am I, Nay. You don’t need to be down there in you condition.”
“What condition? I’m barely three days pregnant. Going to Hell for a few hours wouldn’t hurt me or the baby.” Naida glared at him angrier than she had been in a while. He was being ridiculous about this, acing even more overprotective than Rick and Jeremy, who had finally given in to her stubbornness.
“You’re still pregnant.” Bill’s anger rose to the occasion and they stood glaring at each other, neither willing to move in their beliefs.
Naida had gained the knowledge of the High Chosen as she slept that day and knew that both her and her baby were safe until she was called to join the Council in no less than twenty years. That knowledge was what pushed the next sentence out of her mouth. “If you can stop me, I’ll stay here.”
“What?” Bill’s anger disappeared with his confusion as he looked at her.
“You heard me. If you can stop me from going, I will stay here with you and send someone else in my stead.” Naida moved her hands to her hips and stood staring at him. “Well?”
Bill just stood there with a look of concentration on his face. He sighed, taking off his jacket and tossing it to Alex who sat in a corner with Hayley, Spencer, Josh, Zac, Jeremy, and Frank. “One rule though. Only use abilities that you were born with.”
Naida fought the smile that threatened to creep across her face at his words. She shrugged as she began to take off her guarders, knowing that this was going to be a weapons free fight, and tossed them to Jeremy. “It’s a deal, Billy.”
“Fifty bucks says Bill wins.” Josh pulled his wallet out and waved a fifty around. Zac pulled his out and laid another fifty on top of it, nodding.
Jeremy shook his head and then pulled his own wallet out. “A hundred says Naida kicks his ass.”
“You’re biased, Jeremy.” Zac took the money anyway, smiling the whole time.
“I may be biased, but you haven’t see some of the stuff she can do. Until you have, don’t think she’s lost yet.”
They all turned back to the fight as Bill and Naida began to circle each other in the typical fighter’s fashion, though Bill was in a fighter’s stance and Naida remained tall and strong. She smirked a little as he moved toward her with that super natural speed that had only a year before realized he possessed.
She stepped out of the way, as quickly as he had and he frowned, turning to her. He tried it again, but this time she didn’t move. He couldn’t stop in time to prevent from hitting her, but when his body would have normally collided with hers, he went right through her, running into the far wall. “What the hell, Naida? I said only powers you were born with.”
“I hate to tell you this, Bill, darling, but I was born with all my abilities. I just didn’t know how to utilize them until recently.”
“Fine. How about only powers you’ve known how to do from birth to before all the crazy junk started happening with you?”
Naida tilted her head to the side and shrugged. “It’s your funeral. Let’s go.”
Bill frowned at that comment, but moved to attack her again. She went down to her knees and swung her leg around quicker than he could blink, taking his legs out from under him. She straddled him before he could get up and had a hand on his throat, scales covering her arm. “I win.”
“No dragon, Naida. That was only recent.”
“Maybe you should read up on mermaids. These scales are mermaid scales, venomous to the touch. Only the mermaid’s power can stop the spread of the toxin through the blood stream. I win.” Naida smiled down at him. “I guess I’m going to Hell.”
“You know, sometimes I hate you.”
Naida shrugged and got off of Bill, going over to Jeremy and putting her guarders back on. She had her back to Bill, but continued to talk to him. “Join the club. There are many people who hate me.”
She heard him move and knew she didn’t have time to turn around. She dropped her knees and her body burst, sending water flying all over Jeremy, Josh, and Zac. The water moved quickly away from them and she came back out of it, grabbing Bill’s ankle and throwing him hard into the wall, causing the bricks behind to crack a little. “What the fuck, Bill? It was over. I had won. Deal with it.”
“The water wasn’t something you could have learned when you were little.”
“Are you so sure about that, Bill?” Naida looked at him, anger plain on her face. “How much exactly do you know about mermaids, Bill? You say I’m your best friend, but do you really know anything about what I am? Becoming the water is one of the first things mermaid children learn in school.”
Naida shook her head and grabbed her last guarders off Jeremy’s lap, slipping it on. “I’m not going to tell you again. I won and am going to be going down there tomorrow. No questions asked.”
Jeremy turned to the other two boys he was with and smiled. “I win too. Fork over the dough.”
Josh and Zac were staring at Jeremy like he had sprouted another head. He frowned and snapped his fingers. “What’s wrong?”
“Um, Jeremy, have you not noticed that you have a fin?” Josh pointed to the blue tail that had appeared on Jeremy when Naida had turned into water over him. “When did that happen, mate?”
Jeremy looked down and frowned. “Naida, why didn’t I feel it this time?”
Naida smiled and knelt beside Jeremy, running a hand lightly over his tail, pulling the water off his skin as she did so. His legs emerged and she leaned into him, kissing him gently. “The first time always hurts.”
Naida smiled wide at her own joke and everyone started to laugh hysterically. They were still laughing as Lucy walked into the room, frowning. “What did I miss?”
Naida was the first to recover, shaking her head. “Nothing much, Lucy. Just a little Freudian slip. What’s up?”
“I was just coming to get Josh. We had a meeting and he was a little late so I came looking for him. Have you solved the Hell issue?” Lucy looked between Naida and Bill, obviously have heard from the people who had heard Bill yelling at Naida upstairs. She had somehow managed to get him down here, which was why there wasn’t as large an audience as there normally would have been.
“She’s still going.” Bill spoke from the floor opposite everyone else. “But we’re going to be sending more than just you and Spencer.” He held his hand up to silence Naida. “You are Queen now and have had an attempt at your life, more bodyguards are warranted.”
Naida’s jaw dropped and she hit him with her power from across the room. “Bastard! You had this planned the whole time. You knew that I would challenge you to make me stay. You wanted this because you knew that it makes sense for me to have more bodyguards with a life threat on me. I could have killed you, you know?”
“If I had been human that throw into the wall would have killed me. I think I might have a mild concussion. You can hit, girl, I’ll give you that.” Bill started to rub his head and Naida sighed, she would not show him sympathy after that asshole attempt to get her to have extra guards.
“Who do you suggest I take? It can’t be Frank because he’s here to help and they probably know that. I refuse to take you or Alex because Dad needs you here. Jeremy will be going, but he’ll be going as King so he can’t do bodyguard duty. Who else is left?”
“Josh and Hayley.”
“They’re kids, Bill. I can’t even ask them …”
“You don’t have to ask us, we’re going.” Hayley stood, looking defiantly at Naida, daring her to tell her she couldn’t go.
Josh stood a little more slowly and shrugged. “We’re going, Naida. We may only be kids to you, but we’ve got a lot more fighting experience under our belts than most people give us credit for. We can handle ourselves in a fight.”
Naida sighed, somehow knowing that she wasn’t going to win this fight. She shook her head and started toward the door, calling over her shoulder. “Be down here and ready to go in one hour. We leave without you if you’re not here and ready to go.” She wasn’t sure why, but she had went from being confident about her trip to Hell to dreading it. Here’s was hoping that they could fight and she wouldn’t be guarding them.
