Chapter 13: Home Sweet Home
∞♥♥♥♥∞
“This is so exciting! We finally get to take our babies home!” I said, practically jumping in the air as Chris and I entered the hospital.
Chris grinned at me, and took my hand. “ I know. I thought this day would never come!”
We didn’t even have to tell the nurse who we were this time. She ginned when she saw us coming. “There’s the Lewison fathers. I know Bliss and Colin are going to be happy to be going home.” She winked.
We both grinned in return.
“Are they ready?” I asked.
“Yep! Isabella just got done feeding them both a bottle. They are I her room. I’ll send a nurse in to help you with them.”
Chris and I thanked her, then quickly headed into Isabella’s room.
We found her sitting on the bed, a twin in each arm.
“Look, babies. Your daddies are here,” she said to the twins.
Chris and I both smiled, and walked over to them.
“Are you going to be okay going home?” Chris asked, gently placing a hand over her arm.
“Do you need a ride?” I asked.
“I’m not going to lie. It’s going to be hard going home without them, but this is how it has to be.” She turned to me. “Thank you for offering, Blake, but Toni is going to take me home. I think it would be even harder on me if you two took me home.”
“We understand,” I said.
Chris nodded.
Just then, there was a knock on the opened door, and a pretty blonde nurse walked in. She smiled at us. “I heard a rumor that the Lewison twins were going home now.”
We all smiled.
“Yeah! We’re here to take them home,” I told her.
“Do you have the baby carriers?” the nurse asked. “I’m nurse Taylor by the way. It’s nice to meet you.” She walked over to us and extended her hand.
Chris and I both shook it and introduced ourselves.
“In answer to your question, yes, we got them right here.” I grinned and held up Colin’s baby carrier as Chris held up Bliss’.
Then ruse smiled. “Good.” She turned to Isabella. “And you. Is your ride arriving soon?”
Isabella nodded. “She should be here any time now.”
“Can I take Colin?” I asked Isabella.
She smiled. “He’s your son. Take him.”
I smiled too, and picked my son up. I looked into his eyes again, and smiled as Colin’s big brown eyes looked into mine. “Hello, handsome. Dada’s gonna take you home now. Would you like that?”
Colin gurgled, causing me to smile. I put him in his blue and black plaid baby carrier, making sure he was latched in securely.
Chris had Bliss in his arms right now, and was holding her, just starring into her eyes. “You are the most beautiful baby in the world, just as your brother is the most handsome baby in the world,” he told her. Bliss blinked her little green eyes at him, and he smiled. “All right. Let’s get you in your carrier.” Chris gently set her into her cherry blossom carrier, and latched her in securely.
Toni came into the room rolling a wheelchair, and gave us a weak smile. “Hi guys. I see your here to take your sons home.”
Chris and I both nodded. I could tell she felt as bad for Isabella as we did. I knew it must not be easy for Isabella to give the twins up. I know I never could.
“Hey, Toni. How are you?” I asked.
“I’m doing okay,” she answered.
“Hey,” Chris said, giving her a polite nod.
“Hey,” she said before tuning to Isabella. “You ready, sweetie?”
Isabella nodded. “Yep! Do I really have to go in a wheelchair though?”
“Hospital orders,” Toni said, bringing the wheelchair to the side of Isabella’s bed.
“Stupid rules,” Isabella said as Toni helped her into the chair.
“Would you like to say goodbye to the twins? You know, we can keep you updated on them, and you could come visit after they are settled in,” Chris offered.
“I’d like to say goodbye to them, yes. I appreciate you offering to let me visit them,” Isabella said.
I wished Chris hadn’t told her she could visit. I didn’t want her in the twins’ lives. What if she changed her mind and wanted them back? I knew it would be hard for her to get them back, but still…
She took one of Colin’s hands and one of Bliss’ hands in her own, and gently kissed them. “Goodbye, my babies. Always know that mommy loves you with all her heart.” She stood up, tears in her eyes. “Could you two please take them home now? I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”
Chris and I both nodded.
Chris gave her a hug. “You can visit them anytime.”
I hugged her too. “You'll be all right.”
I picked up Colin’s carrier, and Chris picked up Bliss’ carrier, and then we both left the hospital, making sure to sign the release papers on the way out.
I felt really bad for Isabella, but the babies were ours now. I wasn’t about to give them back.

After making sure both babies were buckled in tightly (their baby carriers also acted as car seats once you buckled them in with the seat belt), Blake and I got in the car and I drove us back to Jordin’s. Our flight back to Seattle was in three hours, but we had just enough time to head back and let Jordin, Sanjaya, and his sister see the twins.
“You know, I really wish you hadn’t told Isabella that she could visit the twins whenever she wanted,” Blake said out of the blue.
I cast a quick glance at him. “Why not?”
“Well, because I don’t want her to change her mind.”
“She can’t,” I reminded him. “She sighed over her parental rights, and we adopted them. They are ours now.”
“Still, I don’t want her in their lives. We’re their parents; not her. It would be too much for them to have three parents. What? We share custody with her too? Or what if they end up growing more attached to her, and want to stay with her when they get older? What if they don’t want two daddies, and want to be with their mother once they have the option?”
I shook my head. “Blake, you’re getting way ahead of yourself, and getting too many paranoid ideas.”
“You never know. It could happen. She gave the babies to us. She gave up her rights. She doesn’t need to be in their lives.”
I cast a glance at Blake in the rearview mirror, and saw that he was crossing his arms and pouting. “I hate when you do that. You look like you’re five years old.”
“Shut up!” he said. It wasn’t in an amused way this time. This time, he sounded like he really meant it.
I sighed, and reached a hand over to his. I gently squeezed it. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to call you a five-year-old. I love you. I don’t want to fight. We’re bringing our babies home. This is supposed to b a happy day for us.”
He squeezed my hand back. “I’m sorry too. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk. It’s just that we’ve waited so long for the twins. I don’t want them to love her more than us, and want her to be their parent instead of us.”
“I understand. Really, I do. I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you first about her visiting the twins. We all should have talked before they were born. I really don’t think you have to worry though. I don’t see how they could possibly love anyone as their parent more than you. You’re going to be such a good dad. You were so good with Phil’s kids, and even with my sister’s kids. You're a natural.”
He smiled. “You’re a natural with them too. I guess for me, I've always wanted a little sister or brother. Being an only child, I never got to take care of a baby sister or brother. Now I my chance to give love to two babies. Only now it’s as their father. In my opinion, that’s even better than being a big brother.”
I grinned. “I’m sure it will be. Until it comes time to change the diapers.”
“Well then it’s all you, babe.” Blake patted my shoulder.
I laughed. “I don’t think so, dude. You’re changing just as many diapers as I am.”
“Oh, fine. But I’m pouting. I have reason too if I have to change a diaper.”
I smiled at him in the rearview mirror. He was indeed pouting again. “I’ll give you that.” I pouted too, and he laughed.
I grinned. Being a father with Blake was going to be so much fun!

“I’ve never seen a completely bald baby before,” Sanjaya said as he looked at Bliss, who was sitting in her carrier on the floor. She was awake, while her brother, who was sitting in his carrier next to her, was fast asleep.
Shyamali nodded. “Yeah. Usually babies at least have some hair like Colin.”
“But that’s one of the things that makes her cute!” Jordin cooed. “I love bald babies!” She snapped a picture with her Polaroid camera, then turned to Colin and got one of him as well. “Babies’ first pictures!” she said.
I grinned. “You should come visit us in Seattle, and help Chris fill out the albums. I’m not good at that stuff.”
“I’ll teach you,” Chris said, kissing my cheek.
I kissed his lips.
“Oh my gosh!” Sanjaya suddenly cried out.
“What?” Chris, Shyamali, Jordin, and I all asked in unison.
“I just kissed Bliss head, and my lips sank in. She has a dent in her head!” Sanjaya said, sounding panicked.
“What?” I rushed over to where Sanjaya was pointing, and ever so gently felt the spot. My hand flew to my mouth and I looked up at Chris. There really was a dent in her head! “Chris, she has a dent in her head! What if something went wrong with the birth that the doctor and nurses didn’t pick up on?” I was freaking out. How could this happen?
I thought Chris would be horrified, but instead of rushing over to check it out for himself, he burst out laughing, as did Shyamali and Jordin. “You’re kidding me, right?”
I shook my head. “Chris, why would I joke about this? I’m going to sue the hospital if something is seriously wrong with her.” I checked Colin just to be safe, and was even more alarmed when I found an indentation in his head as well. I looked up at Chris. “Colin has one too! Something must have gone wrong in the womb!” I was trying not to cry. I never liked to cry in front of anyone, but I was scared.
Chris, Shyamali, and Jordin laughed even harder.
“It’s not funny! How can you laugh when the twins are deformed?” Sanjaya asked.
“Stop it! Stop it!” Shyamali said, laughing so hard she had tears streaming down her cheeks now.
Chris tried to speak, but he couldn’t. He was laughing too hard.
Jordin remained composure first. “You guys honestly never heard about soft spots?”
Sanjaya and I looked at each other, and then her. “No,” we said in unison.
“All babies have little dents in their heads when they are first born. They are called soft spots. The skull isn’t fully developed there is all. It will grow in eventually. Give it a year. You just have to be careful around it, and not do something stupid like press it in or whatever,” Jordin explained.
“So they have to go a whole year with an underdeveloped skull?” I asked, amazed.
“It’s normal. It doesn’t close until a year because the skull is giving the brain room to grow,” Shyamali told us.
“How do you know so much?” Sanjaya asked.
“I thought anyone eight and up knew,” Shyamali said.
“Don’t feel bad. You’re boys. Maybe it’s a girl thing to know,” Jordin said, placing an arm around me, and an arm around Sanjaya.
“I’m a man, and I knew,” Chris quipped. He grinned at me. “‘I’m going to sue the hospital!’” he mocked.
“‘She has a dent in her head!’” Shyamali chimed in, mocking her brother.
“Shut up!” Sanjaya and I both said, crossing our arms over our chests.
Jordin burst out laughing again, and walked back over to smile at the babies.
I felt so stupid. How come no one ever told me about a soft spot before?
Chris walked over to me, and took me in his arms. He kissed the top of my head. “Don’t worry, baby. You’re not the only one who didn’t know. Sanjaya didn’t know either, and I’m sure there are probably some other people out there who don’t know.”
“Stupid people,” Shyamali quipped. She, Chris, and Jordin all laughed again.
Sanjaya and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes.
“Anyone could have made that mistake,” I insisted.
Sanjaya nodded. “Exactly.”
The other’s snickered, but I chose to ignore them. For once, Sanjaya and I actually agreed on something. It was too bad it was something that got laughs at our expense.

The plane ride home had gone surprisingly well. I was a little worried that the twins were going to cry, and annoy everyone on the plane, but they didn’t.
Blake and I got to experience feeding our babies for the first time. I fed Bliss, and he fed Colin. Obviously they couldn’t be breast fed, so we had bottles of formula for them.
Bliss had looked into my eyes the whole time I fed her. I wondered if she knew I was one of her daddies. I hoped so.
When she finished, I gently burped her against my shoulder, using one of the new burp cloths from the baby shower. Even her little burp was adorable.
I looked over to see Blake smiling down at Colin. Colin really did have big brown eyes. He was looking up at Blake, his little fingers curling into fists, and then uncurling. By the time Blake had finished feeding him, Colin was just about asleep. Carefully, Blake burped him over his shoulder with another shower burp cloth.
After their bottles, we put them back in their baby carriers, and they slept for the rest of the flight.
Jordin and Shyamali had offered to change them before we left. Blake and I were both happy to oblige. I knew we would have to change the twins’ diapers on our own eventually, but for then, I was glad to let them do it. Jordin had changed Bliss, and Shyamali had changed Colin.
When we arrived at the airport, Blake’s parents were there waiting for us.
“There’s our grandson and granddaughter!” Dinah said, running over to us.
Dallas, grinning proudly, followed behind her.
“They’re still sleeping,” Blake said. I knew it was his polite way of telling his parents to keep it down.
“They’re beautiful,” Dallas said, his voice barely audible over the loudness of the airport.
“Look at her, no hair at all! How precious!” Dinah cooed.
Bliss opened her eyes and, after she was awake enough, started to cry.
“Oh, poor baby. May I hold her?” Dinah asked.
I nodded. I unlatched her from the baby carrier, and picked her up. I rocked her in my arms for a moment. “Sh, baby, don’t cry. We’re going to go home soon,” I assured her. She settled down a bit, and I handed her to Dinah.
“I want to hold that beautiful baby boy of yours, but let’s get your luggage, and then get out of here. I’ll hold him at home where it’s a quieter environment,” Dallas said to Blake and I.
Blake and I both nodded.
“Good idea,” Blake said.
I nodded my agreement.
Blake picked up Colin in his carrier, and I picked up Bliss’ carrier.
Dinah was still holding Bliss, who was now resting in Dinah’s arms. I wasn’t sure if Bliss was sleeping or not, but at least she had stopped crying.
Dallas walked with us to the luggage carousel, and helped carry our bags.
Later, I smiled as we walked out of the airport and into the warm, Seattle summer air. It wouldn’t be long now. Soon, Blake and I would have our babies home—right where they belonged.
When we got home, Dallas and Dinah set our bags down. Bliss was now back in her carrier, which I had brought in, and Blake had brought in Colin in his carrier.
“Do you want to hold your grandson now?” Blake asked Dallas.
Dallas grinned. “Yes, please!”
So, Blake took Colin out of his carrier, and handed him to Dallas.
Dallas held Colin close to his body, and smiled down at him. “Hey, little guy! This is your grandpa! You have to hurry up and get a little older so that we can start doing some fun stuff together.”
“No way. I want him to grow up slow,” I said.
Blake nodded. “Very slow.”
Dinah nodded. “I know how that feels. You grew up on me too fast.” She fluffed her son’s hair.
Blake blushed. “Ma...” He may have been complaining, but I knew he loved being babied by her to this day even.
Dinah and Dallas took turns holding the babies and cooing over them, but eventually they got ready to leave, for it was getting late.
They hugged us, and kissed our cheeks as we exchanged goodbyes. They promised to come visit the next day.
They kissed the babies goodbye.
“Woo wee! Those two both need a changing,” Dallas said. He stood up, and they headed towards the door.
“Can’t you guys change them before you leave? It will give you some more grandma and grandpa bonding time with them,” Blake asked.
Dinah smirked. “Nice try. You guys have to get used to doing on your own sometime or the other.”
“I choose the other!” Blake said.
Dinah chuckled. “Goodnight, boys.”
“Goodnight,” Dallas said. He poked his head back in the doorway. “Better you than me, if you know what I mean.” He winked at us, and then shut the door behind him and Dinah.
Blake yawned. “Well, I’m tired. I’ll let you change them, and get them into bed. That way, you have your quality time alone with them.” He started to walk towards the bedroom, but I pulled him back by the back of his shirt. “Nice try, Bshorty. It aint happenin’.
Blake grinned and blushed. “You can’t blame a dad for trying, right?”
I smiled. “I like hearing you call yourself a dad.”
He smiled even more. “Well, I am. We both are.”
I nodded. “Very true. And, as dads, we have to change diapers.”
Blake whined as I pulled him back over to me. “Why me?” he whined.
I smirked. It was a dirty job, but someone had to do it. I just wished that someone wasn’t me. Ha!

“Chris, something doesn’t look right,” I said, examining the diaper. The poop had been absolutely revolsive. Chris and I had decided to just give our babies their first bath. It took us an hour because Chris had insisted on video taping the event and taking a ton of pictures.
Chris looked over at the diaper, and laughed. “Baby, you put it on backwards. Here.” he undid the diaper and turned it the other way.
I blushed. “Oh.” I kept messing up. I felt like such an idiot.
“Don’t feel bad, baby. We’re both learning.” Chris gently rubbed my back.
“But you’re the only one not screwing up,” I reminded him.
“Give me time. I’m sure I’ll screw something up.” He grinned, and then headed over to Bliss to put on her pink onesie that read, Daddy’s little princess.
I was just about to latch Colin’s diaper when he peed again; right in my face. I cried out.
Chris began laughing hysterically. “You have to be careful when changing a baby, baby. You know that at least.”
“Yes, but he just went! I didn’t expect him to have to go again! Ugh! That is so disgusting.” I took one of the baby wipes and wiped my face with it. Then, I took another wipe and went over it again. “I think I’m gonna hurl.”
Chris smirked. “Get him a clean diaper.”
“I don’t have to. In case you’ve forgotten already, his pee is all over my face; not in the diaper.” I quickly latched the diaper before Colin could decide to pee again. “Next time, I get Bliss.”
Chris laughed. “Fine by me.”
I put Colin’s blue onesie that read, Kiss me, I’m cute.
We then carried them into their bedrooms.
First was Bliss. We had decided to let them start off sleeping in their own rooms. If one baby woke up in the middle of the night, we didn’t want the other one to wake up.
Bliss was already sleeping, so she was easy to put to bed. Chris pulled her pink blanket tightly around her as she slept peacefully.
I smiled. I loved watching him with our daughter. He loved her so much already. When he was bathing her, he had washed her body ever so gently. He was even gentler when washing her head with the shampoo. I had taken a picture of that. It was too cute of a moment to pass up.
Chris kissed her sweet little cheek, and then took Colin from me so that I could do the same.
“Sweet dreams, princess,” I quietly whispered. I gently ran my hand over her bald head, then Chris and I left. We had a baby monitor in both nurseries, so we would hear if either baby cried.
Finally, we went to Colin’s room, and tucked him in. I had had a lot of fun bathing him. I loved washing what little blonde hair he had. I realized just how tiny his fingers and toes were when I washed them. He was the most perfect baby ever, as was his sister.
We made sure he had his blue blankie, and then we kissed his cheeks.
“Goodnight, baby. You can be our little prince,” Chris said to him.
I smiled, and stroked Colin’s head. “Our handsome prince. You’re gong to make some princess or prince very happy one of these days.”
“Do you think he’ll be gay?” Chris whispered as we left the room, and shut the door behind us.
I shrugged. “I’m just leaving his options open.”
Chris laughed, and shook his head. “Well, I did find my soulmate in you when I never thought I’d have feelings for a man.”
“That’s because I’m dead sex-ay and irresistible,” I joked.
He pulled me close and kissed me. “You got that right.”
I sighed with contentment, and kissed him back before letting him lead me to our bedroom. I couldn’t help thinking how my life had quickly gone to perfect ever since meeting Chris. I knew that it was going to get even more perfect as the years went by.
B∞C
Blake and I were far too tired to make love or anything like that. It was okay though. To me, holding him in my arms was just as good. I kissed the top of his head. “I’m glad.”
He looked up at me. “Glad about what? That we finally have our babies?”
“That too, but that’s not what I meant.”
“Then what?” He rested his head on my chest again.
I closed my eyes. “That the dent in your head is gone.” I burst out laughing.
“Punk,” Blake muttered.
“I love you too, baby.” I am pretty sure I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
