"Spell it out in a song,
Bet you never catch on to my weakness--
I’m singing every word for you.
Here I’m thinking I’m sly,
Then you’re catching my eye, and just maybe
You’re thinking what I’m thinking too"

"Aw, I love this studio," Carrie said as she pulled into a parking space.
"You've recorded here before?" Kelly asked
"Yea, for my second album. It's so perfectly built, and they have this room where they bring all the strings and stuff in where the acoustics are just amazing. Chills every time."
"Do you wanna, um, come in?"
"I don't want to intrude."
"It's fine," Kelly assured her.
"Alright," she agreed with a smile.

"Kelly," Narvel smiled, standing as they walked into the front office.
"Hey," she hugged him. "Have you met Carrie before?"
"Um no, actually" he smiled, turning to the blonde in surprise.
"Hi," Carrie said, holding out her hand which Narvel shook.
"Narvel's my manager," Kelly explained. "These are actually his studios."
"Really?" Carrie smiled. "Y'all did an amazing job here."
"Thanks," he nodded. "You ready to go?" he asked, turning to Kelly.
"Yep," she grinned as he turned to lead them to where she would be recording.
"Wait," Carrie said, putting a hand on Kelly's arm to stop her.
"You ok?" Kelly asked, studying her face worriedly. "You're not feeling sick again are you? Cause I can take you back home, no problem."
"No, I'm fine," she smiled at Kelly's sincerity. "I just realized. You're recording a new song."
"Well, yea. What did you think I was doing?"
"Like one no one's heard before?"
"Yea," Kelly laughed.
"You wrote it?"
"Yea."
"Wow. Are you sure it's ok if I'm here?"
"It's fine," she reassured her. "Besides, I think it'll be good having a fresh set of ears in there."

The producer chuckled at the look on Carrie's face as she watched Kelly recording.
"Bet you never heard anything like that before, huh?" he asked as Kelly's warm voice flowed in through the speakers. It was a softer, sort of love song, and her voice was just completely open and welcoming.
Carrie watched as Kelly sang with her eyes closed, all the emotions of the lyrics clearly etched in her features.
"You know," Carrie said. "I've been trying so hard to get there. To get to that place where you can tell that an artist truly means every word they're singing."
"I have to say, she's probably one of the best at it," he nodded, adjusting the sound of the backing track slightly.
"That's what music is all about, and I would give anything to be able to emote a song like that."
"Can I give you a word of advice?"
"Definitely," she nodded, her eyes never leaving the Texan that was in the booth before them.
"Stop trying."
Carrie's face fell as she turned to him.
"No," he laughed softly. "I didn't mean because you'll never be able to do it. I meant stop trying so hard. You can't force it. It has to be real, or else people will be able to see right through it. Kelly would probably tell you the same thing."
Carrie nodded as she felt the voice that was surrounding them completely enveloping her.
"So what you think?" Kelly asked with a childlike grin as the song ended.
"Carrie?" the producer asked.
"You just laid down a song like that, and you're asking me what I think?' Carrie asked in disbelief.
"Yea," Kelly shrugged.
"It was ok," she replied, nonchalantly, making the producer laugh.
"You think I should do it again?"
"Definitely," she nodded, willing to agree to anything to be able to hear that voice again.
"Yea," the producer nodded. "Just one more time to make sure we got it."
"Sure thing."

"You're a genius," Kelly smiled at the producer as he played back the track.
"You know, you would make my life a lot easier if you would stop writing new songs when we're in the middle of recording your album," he teased.
"And miss an opportunity like this?"
"You just wrote that?" Carrie asked.
"Yea," she nodded. "About a week ago. You like it?"
"So, a song just pops in your head out of nowhere?"
"Well something or someone has to set something off," she admitted, almost shyly. "But yea, that's generally how it works. You write though, right?"
"Yea, in like rooms with people."
"I bow down to you," Kelly laughed. "I could never do that, be that open around others."
"What about when you sing your songs?"
She shrugged, "You just have to try not to think about it. When you're on stage, you just have to let go, and let the song breathe, you know? I mean, that's why I don't sing songs that don't mean something to me personally. Because if you can relate to a song, the emotion will naturally be there. But if you try and force it, people aren't stupid, you know? They will read through you like a piece of saran wrap or something."
The producer looked at Carrie with an 'I told you so' smile.
"I just completely rambled, didn't I?" Kelly asked with a grin.
++++++++
"So honestly, what do you think?" Kelly asked as they got back into Carrie's car. "I seriously need you to be harsh if you need."
"I love it," Carrie answered bluntly. "I still can't get over the fact that you wrote it just a couple days ago."
Kelly shrugged, "People always say that. I just say it's free therapy."
Carrie nodded, "So what was the inspiration for this song?"
"I'm not sure," she replied, thoughtfully. "It's just one of those that woke me at like two in the morning."
"Fun stuff," Carrie teased.
"Look who's talking," Kelly smiled. "Miss, let's wake the ol' KC up at three in the morning and scare her to death."
"I didn't mean to scare you."
"Don't worry about it," she touched her hand briefly. "Honestly, I'm glad I was there. I'd hate for you to have gone through that by yourself."
"Thanks," Carrie smiled.
