AN: It is nice being loved by a child. I was always amazed by how forgiving and loving they are. One of my friend's has a kid about seven, and he just adores me and I'm always impressed by how he doesn't stay mad at me, even when I have to tell him to quit doing something. When my parents separated, I felt like it was my fault. And when my dad suddenly left the state a few days before my thirteenth birthday, and he told me it was my fault, I was heart broken. I haven't spoken to him since. He forgot my birthday this year, and made sure he didn't send much money for Christmas. *eye bleach eye bleach eye bleach* Haha, you'll be sad to know I might not update tomorrow because I'm going out of town for the day. Hope everyone loves this chapter! The song used is One Love by Sister Hazel, one of my new favorites.
“Daddy?” Lily-Rose asked when Johnny tucked her in that night. The canopy for her bed had arrived, and he had carefully hung it. She looked like a princess, laying there in her lacy blankets and a long white nightgown. Johnny thought he loved her best like this, when she was simple and innocent.
What was he going to do when she grew up? How long until he wasn’t allowed to come in and kiss her goodnight anymore? How long until she decided she was too old to call him ‘Daddy’, too old to be his little girl. Johnny didn’t even want to think about it.
“What, baby?” he pulled the blanket up to her chin.
“Are you and Charity going to start fighting like you and Maman did?”
“What? No, of course not.” He blinked.
“I hated it when you and Maman fought.” The little girl settled back into her blankets and yawned. Clearly it had been a long day for her.
“I know, sweetheart. I did, too.” He bent and kissed her forehead.

I slipped my guitar into my gig bag, along with my music. Sarah Jane looked at me and bit her lip. I’d been sulking around the apartment all evening. She clearly hadn’t expected me to be going out.
“Are you going to be okay, Charity?”
“Sure. Why wouldn’t I be? I had no business trying to tell my boss how to raise his kids.” I said dully.
“Well, damn, I can see why you would. He can’t keep lying to those kids forever.” Sarah Jane rubbed her forehead. I just shrugged. I needed desperately to be able to leave. At least for a little while.

Johnny stared out the window. He needed to leave the house for a little while. He needed to find someplace else to be. The kids were asleep, but he couldn’t just leave them alone in the house. And he didn’t want to call Charity again. He thought he might need a little time away from her.
Instead, he picked up his phone and dialed his agent.
“You want me to find you a babysitter?” the agent said flatly over the line.
“Well, yeah.”
“What about that nanny you’ve got on your payroll now? Where’s she at?”
“She only works in the daytime. And we had a little fight, and I need to get out of the house for a little bit.” Johnny was in his room, going through his closet. He wasn’t going to go anywhere fancy, just somewhere to maybe snag a beer or a cup of coffee or something. He just needed to be around adults.
“Okay. I’ll send someone over.” There was a pause. “Vanessa called me today. I wasn’t going to tell you, but I figured I might as well since I have you on the phone.”
“Oh,” Johnny was aware of the change in his voice. “How’s she doing? She hasn’t called the kids.”
“She said she was sorry about that. Said she’s still working some things out. Vanessa wanted to know how the kids were. I told her to call them herself. She just hung up. She doesn’t sound too great, Johnny.”
“I don’t think we’re ever going to get back together.”
“No, I don’t think you are.” The agent sighed. “Have fun tonight, okay? The baby sitter’ll be there soon.”

I sat up on the stage in the all night coffee house. It was open mic night, anyone was allowed up. I was coming up directly behind a girl who read a poem about getting dumped, and a man who had sung a song about being lonely. I guess it was Sad Hearts Night, too.
I parked myself on the stool and adjusted the strap over my shoulder. I smiled out into the crowd. Most people were at least half listening. I knew that this wasn’t a place to get famous, or even expect a lot of attention. This is where people went on dates.
My guitar was in tune, so I cleared my throat and began to play.
“We are just children, understand.
We’re two in a million,
But precious grains of sand.
We slip through the fingers,
And dancing on the wind, we find each other.” I was singing clearer, stronger than I had ever sung before.
I didn’t notice the door open, didn’t see the new man come in and sit down at a table not too far from where I was singing. I didn’t notice his rapt attention.
“A star made a wish on us tonight,
Hangin’ out in Heaven,
Inspired by our light.
And she knows how it feels,
To shine on all the world.
And last forever.
One you, one me,
One chance for us to live.
One heart, one soul,
One life for us to give.
One dream, one mind.
One sky up above.
One you, one me, one love.”

Johnny was entranced. He’d had no idea that Charity could even play guitar. And while she wasn’t the best he’d ever heard, she was still pretty good. Once she finished her song, she got off the stage and started to pack her things away.
“Charity!” he called to her, his tone sharper than he had intended. The girl jumped and turned. Her eyes widened and then narrowed.
“What are you doing here, Johnny?”
“I just wanted to get out for a little while. Why didn’t you tell me you were a musician?” he hurried over to her. She gave him a dark look and then went back to packing her things up.
“Since when is my private life any of your business, Mr. Depp?”
“Charity, please don’t be mad with me.” He pleaded. “I didn’t mean to sound like such a prick. I’m just… I’m just worried, okay? I don’t know how to tell them that their mother isn’t coming back, you know?”
Charity hiked her bag on her shoulder. She looked at her employer for a few minutes before sighing in defeat.
“Why don’t you give me a ride home, Johnny?”
