Chapter 13

Valentine was growing VERRRYYYYY impatient. She was sitting in the back of her limo, her window rolled down, talking to an idiotic security guard at the palace gates. "I am Valentine Pozzo di Borgo," she said as if talking to an infant. "Okay? My father owns half of Paris. Don't you realize who I am?"

"I'm sorry, miss," the guard said, without a trace of genuine apology in his voice. "But there's no one named Valentine Pozzo di Borgo on the guest list tonight. I can't let you inside. Visiting hours are over and the whole family is asleep. I'm not going to wake them up. I have express orders from my superior officer not to disturb His Serene Highness for any reason."

Val rolled her eyes. "Hold on." She dialed Andrea's number and put he cell phone against her ear. "Darling, Andrea, guess what? I'm stuck outside the palace because this idiotic security guard refuses to let me inside because, it's past visiting hours, he says, and I'm not on some stupid 'guest list'. Whatever. Since when do I have to be on a guest list to visit my friends?" Pause. "Ok." Val held the phone away from her face and addressed the guard. "Monsieur Casiraghi would like to speak with you, sir."

The guard took the phone. "Is this really Monsieur Casiraghi or is this a joke?"

"You won't think it's a joke when I tell my grandfather to can you first thing tomorrow," Andrea snapped. "Now please let my friend inside the gates. Have a lovely night. Goodbye."

That done, the limo rolled into the gated palace court and parked outside the private family entrance that faces the cliff that hangs over the sea. The moon was casting its light on the rolling ocean waves.
