Kelly couldn't help but laugh as she watched the replay of her performance in her dressing room with the sound off, "You're totally right. I look like I'm wearing a moo-moo."
Ashley shook her head, laughing as well.
"I look huge," Kelly scrunched her nose.
"I think it's because they shot it in wide screen," Jill noted. "Because the pictures from the red carpet look a lot better."
"Pictures from the red carpet already?"
"We were following you online too," Kate shrugged.
"Seriously?" Kelly laughed lightly.
"Dude, this is all new to us. It's kinda exciting," Jill defended.
Kelly smiled, "Have I mentioned lately that y'all are my two favorite new people in the world?"
"Your phone," Ashley handed her her cell as it started to ring.
Kelly answered it, "Hello...yes...really? Like no lie?....oh my God!...thank you so much." She hung up the phone before turning to her best friend with a light squeal.
Ashley barely had enough time to open her arms as Kelly jumped on her, knocking her back a step, "Who was that?"
"Jeff," Kelly grinned, pulling back from the hug.
"Must be some damn good news because you usually don't smile when he's involved."
"We got a date."
"You and Jeff? Hunny, you're gay."
"No, you smartass," she hit her arm. "The album. We have a date for the album."
"Oh, that's great," Ashley pulled her into another quick hug.
"When is it?" Jill asked.
"July 26th," Kelly replied, turning to hug the both of them as well.
"Isn't that in the middle of the tour?"
"They have a date," Kate replied. "I doubt she'd care if it was ten years from now as long as they have one."
Kelly smiled at having Kate get it. She hugged her closely.
"Congrats," Kate whispered.
"Thanks," she pulled back. She turned to Ashley, "You know what this means, right?"
Ashley laughed, nodding.
"My birthday party is gonna be insane," Kelly grinned.
+++++++++++
"How do I look?" Kelly asked, walking into Ashley's room in a pair of cutoff jeans and a short sleeve button down shirt. She laughed as she watched Ashley put in a set of fake teeth.
"Not nearly as hot as me," Ashley replied. "Come here."
Kelly walked to her.
"Redneck party...this is gonna be so great," Ashley nodded as she unbuttoned Kelly's blue and white checkered shirt. She took the two ends of it, tying them below Kelly's chest.
"Ash..." Kelly fussed.
"No...now you look hot."
"Did you not see how much of a cow I looked like at the Idol thing?"
"Kelly, this is me, remember? First off, I'd never make you look bad. Second, I'm so not the type to blow steam up your ass, so I mean it when I say Jill was right about the wide screen thing. You look great right now."
"Fine..." she grumbled as Ashley turned around, grabbing something. Her eyes lit up at the sight of the blonde, mullet wig. "You got it!"
"I told you I was good," Ashley laughed, helping her put it on.
"Ok, seriously," Kelly giggled. "How sad is it that I look kinda good like this?"
"I think it says a lot about you," Ashley nodded, quickly moving out of the way as Kelly made a move to hit her arm.
++++++++++
"Hey," Kate waved excitedly as Ashley walked over to her and Jill and Corey.
"You can be very perky sometimes, do you know that?" Ashley raised an eyebrow.
"Jill tells me that all the time," she nodded.
"Alcohol totally makes it worse," Jill commented, pointing to the drink in Kate's hand.
"Hey, this is only my first one," she argued.
Jill laughed, nudging her playfully.
Kate smiled, turning back to Ashley, "I thought you were bringing Kelly?"
Ashley rolled her eyes, "She's outside, talking with the valet. She doesn't want to give him her car."
"Is she already drunk?" Corey asked.
"No, she hasn't had a thing to drink yet."
"I'll go see if I can get her to come inside," Kate nodded, walking towards the door and out of the club they had rented out. She smiled at the sight of Kelly leaning against the passenger door of her car with her arms folded. The valet was standing behind his podium, arms crossed as well. Kate whistled, "Nice mullet."
Kelly turned, she gave a small smile when she noticed Kate walking to her, "Hey."
"Problems?"
Kelly shrugged, standing up straight, "Nah." She reached forward, handing the valet a tip.
He smiled, gladly accepting it.
"Wanna ride with me to park my car?"
Kate watched her curiously as she walked to the other side of the car, unlocking the door. She got in, realization dawning on her, "You didn't have a problem with the valet at all, huh?"
"Nah, he's a total sweetie. He's done several parties for me before. I just wanted to see if I could get you to come out so I could get to at least spend a couple minutes with you before things get crazy in there."
Kate smiled, "If you want to spend time with me, all you have to do is ask."
"You've never been to one of these things before," Kelly laughed softly. "I love my friends to death, but because I don't get to see them that often, the times that I actually do get to see them, they think they own me. I don't get two seconds to myself."
"That kinda sucks."
"They're my friends," she shrugged. "And on nights like this, I don't mind at all. It can get kinda rough sometimes when I'm home in Texas, and they have something planned for every second of every day, and all I wanna do is sleep. But again, they're my friends, and I love hanging out with them, so..."
"So when was the last time you were back in Texas?"
"Um...when we went to the concert, maybe?"
"That's like almost two months ago."
"You get used to it," Kelly assured, pulling into a parking space.
They both got out of the car, and Kelly smiled as they met at the back of it.
"So...you're a total mullet lover, huh?" she teased.
"It is kinda hot," Kate laughed, taking a step back. "Actually...mullet aside, you look great."
Kelly raised an eyebrow as she studied Kate's outfit. She had on a pair of overalls with nothing but a bright orange bra on underneath, the pant legs rolled up to her knees, "Look who's talking. Come see."
Kate stepped to her.
Kelly raised a hand up to the shoulder strap on her right shoulder. She let her fingers slide down to the hook, taking the time to note the softness of her skin. She unhooked it, placing it back over Kate's shoulder, "There...totally redneck."
Kate smiled at her.
Kelly shook her head, laughing to herself.
"What?"
"Nothing...just...one of those moments when a crazy thought just pops into my head."
"What was it?"
"You don't want to know," Kelly replied.
"Maybe I do."
"You don't."
"Try me," Kate urged.
Kelly raised an eyebrow, "Alright...I was thinking that if you were gay I'd so do you right here in the parking lot."
Kate's jaw dropped.
"I just thought it was funny in a ironic sort of way," Kelly explained as she leaned back against the trunk of her car.
"Ironic?"
"I'm not always like this, you know? I mean...I say what I think, I just don't normally think these things. It's just ironic in a twisted kind of way that it'd be with you."
"I'm sorry," Kate offered.
"For what?"
"Being straight," she shrugged.
Kelly smiled, shaking her head, "I think of you being straight as a good thing. Kate, I love hanging out with you, and I love talking to you, and I believe I already blurted out the other day that I think you're beautiful...but I'm your boss. I couldn't let anything happen between us. So, your being straight makes it easier on me. I get to be relaxed around you, and I don't have to hold back, and that's nice. It's just times like this when we're alone, and you're standing there looking unfairly hot, and I can't do anything about it that sucks, but I can so deal with that. Like I said...we're alone, and you're hot, and I get to look at you being hot, so I'm perfectly fine with that."
Kate smiled, "I love that you've always been honest with me."
"This so wouldn't work if I weren't," Kelly replied. "But thanks for not running scared. That helps."
"Run from you? Do you not realize how much you have turned Jill and I's world around? And I'm not just talking career wise, either. I mean, I'm not sure why, but ever since we all started hanging out, Jill and I have gotten so much closer. And you...I get so excited at the thought of getting to hang out with you. I don't know if you know this, but you're kind of amazing."
Kelly laughed, "You're such a nerd sometimes."
"Am not," Kate grinned.
Kelly took out her phone as it started to ring, "Hey Ash...yea, everything's fine...we'll be there in a minute...ok bye."
"She was worried?"
"For my safety? No. That I had gone through with my earlier thought about what I wanted to do with you? Yes."
Kate giggled.
"She doesn't trust me around you."
"Shouldn't it be the other way? I mean, protective best friend mode, wise."
"No, that is her being protective. She thinks if I keep being like I am with you, then I'm gonna get hurt. She doesn't think I can just have fun with you."
Kate nodded, "Ah...well, we'll just have to prove her wrong, then, won't we?"
"Yes, we will," Kelly smiled, accepting her elbow, linking their arms together.
++++++++
"Had fun?" Ashley asked, standing beside Kelly at the bar.
"Tons," Kelly smiled.
"Y'all were out there for a while."
"We went for a ride."
Ashley studied her carefully before turning to look at Kate who was dancing with some of the band members, "Why is she less dressed than when she left?"
"Hm?" Kelly turned to look.
"Her overalls were fully on when she left to find you."
"It's just one shoulder," Kelly smirked at her. "How much damage can I do with one shoulder?"
"A lot," Ashley replied. "I know you, and I know how you get when you want something."
Kelly rolled her eyes, moving to walk to the dance floor.
"Where are you going?" Ashley held her arm.
"Dance."
"With?"
Kelly shrugged innocently.
"Yea right," Ashley laughed, handing her a couple drinks. "Come on, Jebbie and them are all here, and you've barely spent two seconds with them."
"What are these?" Kelly smelled one of the drinks, making a face.
"Something fruity, you won't like it," Ashley assured. She raised a glass that was in her hand, "I have yours right here."
Kelly grinned, "Have I mentioned that you're my favorite."
"And don't you forget it," Ashley nodded as they joined a group of their friends, handing out drinks.
Kelly felt herself being passed along the group for one hug after another. She smiled happily, having been way too long since she'd seen all her friends from back home, "Hey y'all."
"Happy Birthday!" April cheered.
"Yea, and congrats on the album," Jessica nodded.
"Thanks y'all...so what do you guys think," she motioned around the club.
"Makes me want to drink beer and hook up with some guy that's missing his front teeth," Lyndsey replied.
"Perfect," Kelly laughed.
"Come on," April grabbed her hand, pulling her onto the dance floor. "It's way past time to party."
+++++++++++
Kelly looked around the club quickly. It had been a good hour and a half since the last time she saw Kate. She was right about her friends not giving her two seconds to herself. She finally noticed the tall blonde sitting in a booth, talking to Aben and his girlfriend. She turned back to her group of friends that were still dancing, "Hey y'all, I gotta go to the bathroom real quick. I'll be right back."
They nodded, allowing her to walk away. She gave a slight wave as Aben and Ashley got out of the booth. She slid into their seats, smiling, "Hey."
"Hey," Kate laughed.
Kelly took off the wig, her wavy dark hair barely falling on her shoulder.
"Damn, your hair grows fast."
"I know, right?" she giggled, running a hand through it. She took the hair tie from her wrist, pulling her hair back into a messy pony tail. "It's freaking hot."
Kate smiled at her accent, "How are you possibly hot? You're barely wearing any clothing."
"So you've noticed?" Kelly's eyes lit up as she grinned.
Kate laughed softly as Kelly took her hand into her own, lacing their fingers together lightly, "How much have you had to drink?"
"Not much," she admitted. "Just enough to take the edge off the last couple weeks."
"So, you're always this straight forward?" she smiled down at their hands that were still linked on the booth top.
"Straight? Never," she joked. "Straight forward? Always. You haven't figured that out yet?"
"It's hard sometimes to tell whether you're being serious or you're just messing around. Like, earlier in the parking lot, I know you were being serious, but times like now..."
"I wouldn't just mess around with you," Kelly replied, her voice growing soft for a moment.
Kate found the small indication of vulnerability from the Texan endearing.
"Besides," Kelly grinned again, her eyes dancing as she quickly glanced at their hands then back up at Kate's face. "It's not like you've pulled away."
Kate's cheeks turned a light shade of pink as she avoided her gaze, looking out at the dance floor, "Can I ask you something?"
"Do I want to take you home tonight? Absolutely," Kelly nodded, following her gaze to where Kate was watching Jill dance along with a few of her friends from Texas.
"You sure you haven't had that much to drink?" Kate smiled, turning back to her.
"I'm just joking," Kelly laughed softly. "I like seeing you blush. It's cute."
Kate rolled her eyes.
Kelly placed her other hand over Kate's that she was holding, "So what's the question?"
"It's about Jill, actually. I've been thinking about this for a while, and I probably shouldn't bring it up in the middle of your party, but it's on my mind."
"No, it's fine...what's up?"
"I think she likes someone."
"Really? Who?"
"One of our friends."
"Do I know her?"
"No, we went to college with her."
"Ok," Kelly nodded, her fingernails grazing over the back of Kate's hand. "So what's the question?"
"Do you think you could help me?" Kate asked, feeling goose bumps rising up her arm.
"Help you?"
"Yea, like, get them together," Kate replied. "Jill's my best friend, and I can tell she really likes this girl, and I just want her to be happy, you know?"
Kelly smiled, "Yea, of course. Do you know if the girl likes her back?"
"I'm not sure. She's kinda quiet, so it's hard to tell."
"Is she even gay?"
"She's been with a girl before, but she's never actually dated one."
"I'd love to help, but I don't know anything about the girl, or her and Jill's relationship or anything like that," Kelly replied. "Where does she live?"
"Out here in L.A."
"Why don't you set up a lunch for you, Jill, and I, and invite your friend to come? We'll see what happens from there."
"So you'll help?" Kate looked at her hopefully.
"Yea, of course," Kelly nodded. "I told you, if you ever needed help with anything, just ask."
"Thanks," Kate smiled.
"There you are," Kelly and Kate turned to see a couple of Kelly's friends standing there.
"Hey y'all," Kelly smiled.
"Come on," one reached out, taking Kelly's arm. "You get to hang with your band all the time. This is the first time we've seen you in months. The party's just getting started!"
Kelly laughed, rolling her eyes. She stood, giving Kate's hand a squeeze before letting go, "Save a drink for me?"
"Alright," Kate laughed softly, watching as the short Texan was dragged back onto the dance floor by her friends.
+++++++++++
"Hey," Ashley whispered in Kelly's ear from behind, placing her hands on her shoulders. "Come on, the band wants you."
"Oh thank God," Kelly breathed a sigh of relief, allowing Ashley to guide her over to the bar. "I can't feel my feet. I'm getting too old for this."
Ashley laughed, "No, you're not. Jebbie and them have just been hogging you, so we don't have as much alcohol in you as normal, but don't worry, we're about to fix that."
"You're my favorite," Kelly nodded.
"I know," Ashley patted her back, pushing her into the circle that her band had formed. "I got her."
There was a collective cheer from her bandmates. She smiled as she caught Kate's eye from across the circle. "So what are we drinking too?" Kelly asked, accepting the drink that was handed to her.
"To your birthday," Cory announced.
"To the album," Jimmy added.
"To a nice big bonus," Einar suggested, making them all laugh.
"How about to many more years and many more tours and many more memories like this with you guys," Kelly raised her glass.
The band followed in suit before they all downed their drink, several making faces as they did.
Kelly shook her head slightly, handing the glass back, "Damn."
"Been a while?" Ashley laughed, handing her glass back as well.
"Far too long," Kelly nodded. She locked eyes with Kate once more. "Excuse me one second," she patted Ashley's arm, walking away.
"Kelly..." Ashley warned, but was ignored.
"Hey," Kelly smiled.
"Long time no see," Kate laughed softly.
"I believe you owe me a drink."
"Don't people usually ask for a dance?"
"I think this is safer all the way around," Kelly admitted.
"Unless we both get drunk and end up on the dance floor."
"True," Kelly laughed.
"But I'll gladly have a drink with you. What do you want?"
"Body shot?" she suggested.
Kate felt her heart stop.
"You ok there?" Kelly raised an eyebrow, smirking playfully. "You look like you're about to pass out."
"No, I...I'm good," Kate assured.
Kelly giggled, turning to the bar, ordering their drinks quickly, "How about two regular shots?"
"Sounds good," Kate nodded.
Kelly turned to her, handing her one of the shots.
"So, um, how do you want to do this?"
"Let's keep is it somewhat pg, huh?" Kelly smiled, stepping closer to her. She held up her hand with the shot in it.
Kate reached out, wrapping her arm around Kelly's.
"Got it?"
Kate had to step closer, "Ok, yea."
"Ok, on three?" Kelly watched as Kate's eyes watched her closely. They were barely half a foot apart. "One...two...three..."
Both girls quickly downed their shot.
Kelly winced, fighting back a cough that was rising. She looked at Kate who's eyes were closed tightly. When she finally opened them, they were tearing up.
Kelly laughed raspily, "You ok?"
"Yea," she choked out. "Damn."
Kelly smiled, realizing her arm was still linked with her backup singer's, keeping the other girl close, "You know...all of a sudden dancing doesn't seem like a bad idea."
Kate laughed, "I didn't see what was so bad about it in the first place."
"Come on, Romeo," Kelly felt Ashley's hand on her arm.
"We were going dance," Kelly turned to her best friend.
"Not right now," Ashley shook her head.
"Why not?"
"She's drunk, and you're not too far from it."
"She's not drunk," Kelly replied indignantly. She turned to Kate, "You're not drunk, right?"
"No," she shook her head. "But another one of whatever we just had, and all bets are off."
"See?" Kelly turned back to Ashley, her eyes narrowed.
Ashley frowned, realizing she had hurt her, "Come on, I'll buy you a beer."
"Beer?"
"Well, maybe you're not ready for that yet after all."
"Since when do I drink beer?"
"Usually when you're drunk, you love it. You just never remember," Ashley smiled. "Just one drink? Then you can go dance."
Kelly turned to Kate who smiled.
"Go, have fun," she waved her off. "It's your birthday, and you totally should have a drink with your best friend."
Kelly nodded, allowing Ashley to guide her away.
+++++++++++
"I didn't mean it like that," Ashley explained from where they sat at the end of the bar.
"Then how did you mean it?" Kelly frowned, starting her second beer.
"I just meant that y'all had both been drinking, so neither of y'all were exactly thinking straight. Not that she'd only dance with you if she were drunk."
"Kinda the same thing."
"No, it's not."
Kelly sighed, resting her forehead in her hands, "Ash, what am I doing?"
"Celebrating your birthday and your album release date?"
"That's not what I meant and you know it."
"You're having fun," Ashley reminded.
"But she's...she's...well you've seen her, she's gorgeous."
Ashley laughed softly, rubbing her back, "And what's wrong with that?"
"I'm so stupid," Kelly shook her head.
"You're not stupid. You're young, and you're happy, and you're having fun; there's nothing wrong with that."
"Do you really think I can just have fun?" Kelly turned to her.
"I think you have the best of intentions," Ashley nodded. "And you have me here to make sure you stick to those intentions."
Kelly pouted.
Ashley smiled, "And I also think that it's the alcohol talking right now, and when you wake up in the morning, you'll laugh at how dumb you're being."
"Yea," Kelly nodded in agreement, laughing softly. She finished the drink in her hand. "You know, this is really good."
Ashley laughed, "Told you so."
