Sheriff Rossi had been having a difficult evening.Despite putting the thumbscrews to the local police there was very little that could be done to locate Steve in the middle of the night. He had read through the notes that he had taken at the beach house. But Steve’s fan was so under the rader, he just left no clues to his identity whatsoever. If the guy was someone the band knew there was no real indication of it. The letters were free of finger prints. Rossi had pulled in favors from a multitude of precincts and had them searching the files for any similar cases of abduction/rape of young men. None of this was to any avail. Rossi was desperately afraid that by time they found Steve it would be too late. He was also not entirely confident that the guy would not kill Steve. After all when the kidnapper realized that the singer was not interested in being his boyfriend, the results could be tragic. Steve would certainly not submit willing to being raped. When he fought back his stalker’s fantasy of Steve wanting to be his lover would be destroyed. He may not have any use for Steve after that. The sheriff put his head down on the desk and did something he rarely did. He prayed. Since his son’s death he had a very strained relationship with the Deity. He never understood God’s reasoning in bringing Matthew back from Vietnam then allowing him to die so cruelly and violently at home where he should have been safe. “God please let me find this boy before it is too late. Don’t let me have to tell his mother to make funeral arrangements. She does not to deserve to bury her child.

A tall dark haired man stood on the corner dialing the pay phone. When the recipient of his call picked up the kidnapper smiled to himself before he spoke. He told the officer on the other end of the line. “ I just found a van with some young guy in it. I think he has been partying too much. He looks sick and semi-concious so you better get a ambulance out here fast. I think he might be dying. “ And what is your relationship to this so called partier”, the kidnapper was asked.
“ I am just a concerned citizen I walked by it on the way to work," Then to grind the ax further he said “ The guy looks pretty young,I actually thought it was a girl at first, he is small and slender, and has really long dark hair. But you better hurry he may not make it long.” He then gave the exact location of the van. And what is your name the police dispatcher asked. He gave a fake name, but not one too phony sounding, before hanging up. He then repeated his call to two other stations. He needed to do that to play it safe, Steve had to be “rescued” in time.

The desk sergent for day shift walked in and Rossi quickly sat up. “ Sherrif there has been a call that a young man fitting the description of your missing singer has been found in a van. Apparently the person who found him called too different precincts so I am not sure if it may be a hoax of some sort but I figured you would want to know. He is the location he laid a piece of paper on the desk with a street address on it in front of Rossi. “ Well has anyone went out there yet, he asked the sergent. “No we thought we would run it by you “….. The man did not finish speaking before the Sheriff jumped up and said “ Dispatch an ambulance right now. And two squad cars with me. “You don’t want to check it out first he asked Rossi," you don’t know what you walking into." Tell the paramedics not to approach until we clear the area. Other then that we can’t waste time. This victim may be bleeding, drugged, beaten or any other number of things. We don’t know what kind of shape he is in, he may be close to death." Rossi dashed out of the building to his cruiser, only pausing long enough to put his bullet proof vest on while making sure his backup was preparing to follow him.

There was an uncomfortable silence at the beach house after Ross’s sudden departure. Greg sat down at the kitchen table. He sighed deeply “ I am sorry guys, I am just screwing up everything. I couldn’t protect Steve, now I am close to breaking up the band.”
“No,” Neal said, “ Ross got what he deserved . He shouldn't have said those things about Steve. No matter how Steve looks or dresses, it doesn’t give anyone the right to kidnap and rape him.” Soft footsteps coming down the stairs made them all look as Steve’s mother entered the kitchen. She greeted them all quietly before sitting down in the chair. Aaron offered her a cup of tea and to fix her something to eat. She graciously accepted his offer and then focused her attention on the remaining band members and their manager. “ Where is Ross ?” she asked in her slightly accented English. No one spoke for minute then Herbie said “ He decided to leave.” Mary shook her head, “ I know I heard the argument, it woke me up. “We are sorry, “ Greg told her. "No," she answered him, “Thank you all for defending Steve and sticking by him. I am grateful and he will be too. He will need his friends.. and his lover… when he gets back home safe.” When no one answered her right away she continued, “ God is going to bring Steve home to us. He wouldn’t give Steve all he has and then take him away from it,and him away from us just like that. I have faith in God’s love and grace. “ The four men in the room looked at each other. They all seemed to be thinking the same thing. They wished they had the confidence that Mary had in her son’s safe return.

The sheriff and the local police found the van located exactly where the caller said it would be. Sherriff Rossi approached it cautiously, his gun drawn, his backup not far behind him. He took a deep breath and said one more quick silent prayer before opening the van door. The rising sun shone into the back of the vehicle illuminating the figure within.
Rossi looked and did not even have to use the photos he had been given to identify the man inside. He knew immediately it was Steve. He bent over and called his name softly. Steve only moaned in a way of an answer, he did not have the strength to do any more. The sheriff gently touched him, brushing the long dark hair out of Steve's face. "Steve, I am the Sheriff. I am here to help you, get you back to your Mom and the band...and to Greg. They are all so worried about you, they are going to be so happy to see you safe." This time Steve answered weakly, and tears slipped from behind his closed eyelids. Rossi stuck his head out of the van and yelled “ Get the paramedics here, he needs to go to the hospital now. He heard rapid movement behind him as he looked at Steve again. There were raw ligature marks around Steve’s wrists and blood on the back of his pants. Rossi had no way of telling what other injuries there were since Steve was fully dressed. He knew from the man’s clammy skin and rapid pulse that he may be going into shock at any minute. The sheriff also know from his son’s own fatal injuries that Steve could have internal bleeding. He started speaking softly in Portuguese to Steve, gentle words you would use with a frightened child. He hoped the familiar language would comfort the singer and make help him to realize he was safe now. Before stepping out of the van to make way for the medics Rossi promised Steve that he would be with his Mom and Greg again soon. He then walked into a nearby business that was just opening for the day and asked to use their phone.

At Aarron’s they were finishing what breakfast they could swallow which really wasn’t much. Even though Aaron was an excellent cook, no one had any real appetite.
Neal was putting dishes in the sink when the phone rang. Greg snatched it up before any one else could move and he immediately recognized the sheriff’s voice. "It is Rossi," They all stood without speaking while Greg listened before he suddenly let out a huge breath. Greg’s voice was tight making it difficult for him to form words but he choked out,” Steve’s alive. They found him, he is alive and they are taking him to the hospital right now. “ There was silence for a minute in the room then suddenly Steve’s mother started to cry. “ Graças a Deus,Graças a Deus “ she said over and over again. The rest of the group were in silent agreement.Even though none them spoke the language they all knew she was thanking God for letting Steve come home to them.
