His finger lightly tapped the picture he held in his hand.
“Such beauty.” A smile lit up his face at the next picture. Dropping them on his desk, he quickly wrote the note. Stuffing the note and pictures in an addressed envelop, he sealed it shut and handed it over the young man that stood before him. “Before sure this arrives no later than 5 am.”
“Yes sir.” The young man took it and dashed out of the room.
He leaned back in his chair, a satisfied smile on his face.

Joe peeked around at Sav, he had fallen asleep. Scooting further down on the couch, to make them both more comfortable, he laid his head against the back. Absent mindlessly twirling Sav’s soft hair around in his fingers. Letting the strong, unseen presents in the room wash over him.
‘We are not alone to deal with this Sav.’ Joe thought.
‘No baby, you are not.’ Rebecca reached out and softly caressed his cheek.
Joe’s eyes flew open and scanned the room, hoping to see her. “Rebecca.”
Sav stirred in his arms, then settled closer than before. Joe lightly ran his fingers across his cheek, where the chill of her fingers had touched him. ‘She has never done that, in all the years she has been gone.’
“Thomas is in your care now.” Joe whispered in the stillness of the room. Again he felt her icy touch, brushing away the tear that raced down his face.
‘He is by my side, as you are…forever.’
Joe smiled a bit. He saw the door open off to the side of the room and Nick came in, stepping over to the couch and knelt in front of him, his hand lightly resting on Joe’s knee.
“Can you feel them?”
Nick searched his eyes for meaning, then realization washed over him about whom Joe was referring to. “Yes,” He glanced around the room. “Why?...I don’t know.” Nick smiled asking and answering his own question. “I am not their favorite person.”
“I wouldn’t say that. Everybody use to hate you….wanted nothing more than to cut your head off or stake you to the ground.”
”A few would still like to do that.” Nick glanced at Sav.
“Now see…that’s where you are wrong. He doesn’t want that anymore, none us do. You forced your way in, but you are part of this family now. You are somebody to us.”
“That was rather…um..” Nick started, then trailed off.
“Sickening.” Joe put in and stifled a laugh so not to wake Sav.
“To say the least.” Nick huffed and eased himself up to sit on the edge of the couch.
“Seriously Nick, you are part of this family.”
André, one of the many guards in Nicks employ, came into view in the doorway. “Excuse me Mr. de Brabant, sorry to bother you.”
Nick glanced up at André, gently squeezing Joe’s leg, he stood up. “What ever you say Joe, excuse me a moment.”
Joe twisted around the best he could to see who was there. With Sav partially laying on him it was difficult. Careful so not to wake him, Joe eased himself from underneath Sav, pulling the throw from the back of the couch, he tucked it around Sav’s shoulder. Making his way to the foyer where Nick was talking to André.
“…came for you.” André was saying while handing Nick an envelop. “Wes is at the gate with a visitor. The woman is being very demanding that she be let through.”
“Wes…” Nick looked thoughtfully for a moment. “Oh yes...I sent him to watch over Miss Lawrence.”
“A gentleman, Philip is with her.”
“Evelyn.” Joe was taken back by this news.
“Yes sir.”
“She is my ex-wife…” Joe started for the door.
Nick stopped him, with a gentle hand on his shoulder “Joseph, stay inside.”
“Why?” Joe spun around.
“Let them through André.”
“Yes sir.” he hurried out the door.
“It is not safe for you out there.” Nick’s voice was just above a whisper as he looked at the photos in his hand, then read the note.
“The place is surrounded with guards. How can it not be safe?”
“Just for precaution, stay inside.”
“We’re not safe anywhere from that manic. Doesn’t matter if we are inside or outside.”
“Your right, we’re not safe.”
“W..what is that?” Joe pointed to what Nick held in his hand, taking note of them slightly shaking. Not waiting for an answer, he stepped over to stand beside him. Taking the pictures from him, Joe couldn’t believe what he was looking at. “Nick, this…this is your hou…de Brabant Castle or what’s left of it.”
The first picture was of the castle, taken early morning, the sun casting soft shadows across the lush manicured gardens. Lights blazed in several windows as the staff prepared for the upcoming day. The second one was time stamped the same day, the sun cast dim shadows in the opposite direction, exposing wilted trees, singed plants in the gardens. The expansive stone castle lay in ruins, black smoke billowed from many places, flames still leaped in the air in others. The enormous east wall was the only thing left standing, nearly all of it scorched black from the fire
“What does he hope to gain by destroying this?” Joe mused, “What does the note say?”
Nick handed it to him and Joe read it.
Such beauty…such waste.
I had the honor of touring your beloved childhood home, rekindled form centuries past.
Job well done, I applaud your efforts.
The servants I encountered are all dead. Couldn’t have them running back to you Nicholas, they would reveal my identity.
You must figure that out for yourself.
So, as you can see. No one, no possessions are beyond my reach.
“This doesn’t make any sense.” Joe started.
“A mad man’s ploy’s never do.” Nick commented.
“But if he can do this to your…house…”
They looked at each other….
“He can do it do this one.” They both said at the same time.
“Great minds think alike.” Nick told him.
“Everybody is in this house.”
“Right, but if he wanted to blow it up with all of us here, he would have done so already.
“Shit…” Joe ran his fingers through his hair. “..should we leave?”
“It might be for the best, we can’t take any chances.”
“I’ll wake up everybody.” Joe shoved the pictures at him and took off upstairs.
Andre stepped inside, holding the door open for Evelyn and Philip. Wes was right behind them.
“Miss Lawrence, Philip, how nice to see you again.” Nick quickly came forward. “It would be nice to sit down and have a lovely chat, but due to unfortunate circumstance that is impossible at the moment.” he smiled wanly and turned to the guards. “We are leaving….immediately. Bring the cars around, everyone on highest alert. You know what to do after everyone is safely in the cars.”
“Yes sir.” Both men quickly replied, then left in a blur.
“Always the one in charge, right Nick?” Evelyn eyed him.
“To protect those of my family…yes. Now if you would be so kind as to wake up Rick.” he indicated toward the living room. “I will stop and thank you later.” With that, Nick flew upstairs to help Joe wake up the others.
“Still arrogant as ever.” Evelyn told Philip as she went down the few steps into the living room. She hesitated briefly before gently shaking Sav’s shoulder and calling his name.
“W..what? Is Kyle here yet?” He sat up quickly, sleep slurring his voice.
“Um…I don’t know.” Evelyn replied.
Sav blinked several times, so that his eyes focused on her. “Evelyn, what a surprise to see you.”
“I’ve been here five minutes and I don’t know what is going on, but Nick told me to wake you. Everyone is leaving.”
“Leaving.” Sav repeated and tossed the throw aside and stood up. The pain in his leg, a quick reminder that it was going to be difficult to walk.
Amber and Scott came flying into the room. “I’ll help you to the car.” She slipped her arm around his waist, gently urging him forward.
“What’s going on? Where is Kyle?”
“We can’t stay here and Kyle’s plane hasn’t landed yet.”
“I’m not going anywhere until somebody tells me what’s going on.”
Scott rolled his eyes.
“Now is not the time to be stubborn Sav.” Scott bear hugged him from behind and hoisted him high on his chest.
“Put me down!” Sav yelled.
A few minutes later, Phil came bounding down the stairs, followed by Gail, Alex, and Amanda. He saw Evelyn step into the foyer, a slight smile touched his lips. He went over to her and took her hands.
“It’s good to see you again. We can catch up later, but for now, let me escort you to the cars.”
“I just got here Phil. Why is everyone leaving?”
“Joe and Nick are afraid this man will do something drastic with all of us here in the house.”
“Drastic, like what?”
“He burned down de Brabant Castle earlier today. There is nothing left standing.”
“Oh no, Nick put so much time and money into that. Now it’s gone?”
“Apparently so. Gail…” Phil stopped just outside the front door. “…will see all of you to the cars, we’ll try and talk later.” He quickly returned inside the house. Evelyn glanced over to where Amber and Scott were having problems getting Sav into the first car.
Back inside, Joe came down stairs, just as Phil appeared in the foyer.
“Sav is throwing a fit about leaving.” Phil told him.
“Once Amber tells him why, he’ll shut up.”
“Do you really think he will blow up the house Joe?”
“I don’t know…” Joe started as the phone began to ring. “…but why take chances like Nick said.” He told Phil over his shoulder as he headed for the phone, snatching from the cradle. “Hello.”
“There seems to be quite a bit of activity around your estate Mr. Elliott. You are not thinking of leaving are you?”
“What gave you that idea?” Joe tried to keep his voice even as he spun around toward Phil, who had followed him.
“Hum…lets see. I believe that is Richard being unceremoniously tossed into the first car.”
”I don’t know wha…”
”Ah I see. You think I’m going to reduce your home to rubble, like de Brabant Castle. It was enjoyable to watch as it fell, but no, your home is in no danger of becoming rubble.”
“What makes you think I believe you?”
”Believe what you will Mr. Elliott. Once was enough, twice is too much and boring. On the other hand…don’t bother leaving. Running will do you no good, hiding is pointless. I can and will find any of you.”
“What the hell do you want from us?!” Joe yelled into the phone.
“Oh do forgive me. Did I tell you my fascination with bombs? Such complex pieces of equipment. Capable of taking out anything in its path, whether it be a building, moving mounds of earth, cars, people…such a mess that is to clean up. I do have one planted somewhere very close to where you are now standing.”
”I thought you said that my home was…”
”Oh I did, I did…your home is perfectly safe.”
”Then where is it?” Joe demanded, pacing the floor.
“Such a fine looking young man, your Richard. Rumor has it that he is extremely fantastic in bed. Tell me Mr. Elliott. Is Richard really that good?”
”That’s none of your business.” Joe shot back.
“Hum, perhaps I shall find out for myself, but then again, I’m not into sleeping with men. Maybe I should make an exception with Richard. What do you think?”
”I think your crazy and a coward.”
“Richard is not being very cooperative about getting in that car. I don’t believe I would be either. Could it be that he senses something wrong?”
“No, he’s being forced to leave with…out being…told…” Joe’s words tapered off. Meaning behind what the man was hinting at slamming into his stomach. Dropping the phone, Joe raced from the room, nearly knocking Phil over.
“Joe!” Phil exclaimed. Catching himself, then ran after him. He heard him yelling at Amber and Sav to get out of the car, at the same time he was yanking Sav out. Standing on the steps, he watched them coming back to the house. Joe was telling the guards to bring everyone back inside.
“So we’re not leaving?” Sav was saying as they went past him.
“No, we’ll be fine here.”
“Dad you’re acting crazy,” Amber followed him into the kitchen. “One minute you’re telling us we have to leave and the next we’re not. Mind telling us what changed your mind so goddamn fast.”
“I would like an answer to that myself.” Nick said rather heatedly.
“I will in just a minute!” Joe snapped back as he let go of Sav so that he could sit down. Going back to the phone, he put it to his ear. “You better still be there.”
”Where else I would I go Mr. Elliott?”
”Come to my house so I can send you straight to hell.” Joe heard him chuckle over the line.
“I like a person that can think quickly on their feet. Is that how you made it big in the music business?”
”That was part of it.”
”Good, because you are going to need that quick thinking.”
“What does that supp…” The line went dead. Instead of hanging it up, he banged it hard on the wall several times, before slamming his fist into the other part of the phone. It broke apart and fell to the floor.
“Goddamn bastard…what do you want from us!!” Joe screamed at the shattered phone.
Nick grabbed his arm, spinning him around. “Joe, you cannot let him get to you. You have to keep your wits about you, this is what he wants.”
“Then how am I supposed to act Nick!” Joe yelled back. “This man has killed my son, threatened to kill everyone in this house. Sav and Amber would have been next, if I didn’t stop them from leaving.”
”How did you come to that conclusion?” Phil said from the doorway.
“I put the hints together that he gave me. Something about bombs, one is close by and the house was not going to end up like de Brabant Castle. How Sav wasn’t cooperating about getting in the car, because he may sense something wrong.”
“That led you to believe that the car may have a bomb somewhere?”
”Yes!”
“Andre, have some men tow the car and checked, have the others searched also.” Nick told him without taking his eyes from Joe. “You should try and calm down Joe. Don’t let him get to you, where your judgment is marred by your anger.”
“Well, excuse me, I don’t have your centuries of practiced patience or calmness.” Joe huffed as he tried to will his body to calm done.
Nick smile wanly at him, then gently squeezed his arm, “Calmness is not what I’m feeling right now,” he turned to others in the room. “Sorry about scare everyone. We acted in hast in trying to leave so quickly.”
“What about Kyle? I fell asleep, when was the last time somebody called the plane?”
“I’m on it.” Phil said leaving the room to place the call from another phone.
Joe dragged his feet over the table and sat heavily in a chair beside Sav. Dropping his head on the table to rest on his forearms. “I want this nightmare over.”
Sav rubbed his hands over his shoulders, feeling the tight muscles. “Try to relax Joe.”
”You aren’t.” Joe replied turning his head to look at him. “It terrifies me to realize how close I came the losing you and Amber.” His eyes dropped to stare at his lips. “I hate myself for what I’m thinking right now.”
Sav leaned closer. “What are you thinking?”
“Taking you upstairs to bed and getting lost in you, to forget about everything just for a little while.”
Sav smiled softly. “After we pick up Kyle.”
Joe looked away from him.”It would be selfish for us to do that.”
“There is nothing to be selfish about.” Nick said from across the table. “There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel that closeness.”
“Maybe.” Joe whispered.
Phil came back in. “They’ll be landing about an hour from now.”
“I’ll go get dressed so we can leave.” Sav said as he slowly stood up.
Joe grabbed his hand “You’re not going.”
“What?”
“You’re not going. I’m not letting you out of my sight.”
“Then go with me.”
“Nether one of you are going.” Nick started. “I’ll go. Scott can too, with a few guards of course.”
“Kyle is expect…” Sav started, to which Nick cut him off.
“End of discussion.” Nick glared at him, then stood to leave the room.
“I can’t believe he ordered me to stay here.”
“He’s just looking after you Sav. You should be use to it by now.”
”I know, but I can’t even go meet Kyle at the airport.”
”It’ll be alright, they’ll be here soon. You want something to drink while we wait?”
“Sure, nothing else to do until Kyle gets here and I can rest a little easier.”
Joe retrieved a bottle and two glasses, pouring healthy amounts for both of them. They sat in relative silence after everyone said goodnight again and dispersed to various parts of the house.
“This chair is getting hard.” Sav commented.
“We’ll go to the living room.” Joe followed behind as Sav made his way to the couch. He was about to sit down when a soft female voice stopped him.
“Joe.”
“Evelyn.” Joe looked up to see her coming into the room. He went over to her and pulled her into his arms. “I’m sorry, I forgot you where here.”
”Still the same Joe.” Evelyn stepped away from him smiling. “It’s alright, I understand given the circumstances you’re facing. I came as soon as I could after I heard about Thomas.”
”Thank you for coming.” Joe kissed her cheek. “It’s been really hard, but I’m coping or I think I am. Tomorrow night at the funeral will be a harsh reminder that he isn’t here anymore. And a psychotic man is still out there.”
“You’ll do fine, I’m sure of it.”
Joe motioned for the seat beside Sav. “Sit with us for awhile. We can talk about whatever you want.”
“I would love to, but…with the trip, the late hour and what I walked into here.”
“You must be tired.” He looked around the room. “Um…with everyone here, I ran out of rooms. You’ll have to sleep in my room.”
”No I couldn’t do that. Where would you sleep?”
“O..on the couch with Sav, down in the studio, it’s plenty big. I was going to put Tracy and Lily in there. I hope you don’t mind sharing with them?”
“And where are Kyle and Beth sleeping?”
“On this couch, it folds out remember?”
”Yes.”
“I haven’t had the chance to change the sheets or straighten the room. I’ll go do that now.”
“Joe you don’t have to do that. It’ll be like old times.” she smiled warmly, reassurance touching her eyes.
“Yeah old times.” He replied softly.
“OK then. I’m going to try and get a little sleep. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight Evelyn.” Sav called from his place on the couch.
Joe kissed her cheek, lingering longer than needed. “Goodnight.” he whispered in her ear.
Evelyn felt the familiar tingle race up her spine from his voice. Nervously backing away from his, she said goodnight again and went upstairs as quickly as she could.
Sav blew out an impatient breath, dragging his hand over his face. Joe tore his eyes from the gentle sway of Evelyn’s hips as she left the room.
“She’s still beautiful.” Joe said sitting beside Sav, throwing his arm over the back of the couch behind him.
“Yes she is. Can’t believe you let her go.”
“I can’t believe me either, but she wanted it. I really scared her the night I needed to know about you, by tasting your blood.”
Sav scooted down a bit, laying his head back.“Yeah.”
Joe twisted around so that he could face him. Once again his fingers found their way into Sav’s hair. He let his eyes travel to the robe that had loosened and fell open, reviling his bare chest.
“What do you find so fascinating about my hair?”
Joe barely shrugged his shoulder, “It’s soft, I like the way if feels between my fingers when I run them through it.”
Sav looked up at him. The faintest flicker of desire danced in Joe’s eyes.
“I don’t think I gave you the proper welcome home.” Joe reached up with his other hand, trailing his fingers lightly along his jaw, further back to slip behind his head. “Is it wrong of me to want you right now?”
“No…” Sav started as he moved closer. “Thomas would not want you to fall into despair. He would want you to carry on with your life…to live it to the fullest.”
“I hope so.” Joe closed the distance between them. Capturing his cool, inviting lips, if only for a moment, to get lost in each other, to forget about the dangers that surround them.
