So, I finally finished the last chapter. I know it took ridiculously long to get it out, but at least it’s here! After all, the only thing I hate more than bad stories is unfinished stories! :) I know this is not perfect (well, what is?!) and I probably might have left a few minor unanswered questions, but on the whole I think I covered everything more or less *feels slightly unsure* Anyway, for those who’ll be reading, I hope you enjoy! :)
CHAPTER 13Strangely, he felt calm and almost unfazed by anything. The more lucidity crept back to his mind, the more apathetic his look became and he just kept starring at the light-grey ceiling above him with an IV hovering in the air like a lonely cloud. He wasn’t sure what was real and what wasn’t.Did Die really come to rescue him? Or was it one, vivid hallucination? Was he still in the Palace or was he free of it?Nurses who came and went never uttered a word and Kyo stopped trying to ask. Or maybe even if he thought he was asking questions, all that came out of his mouth were slurred, undistinguishable words and the nurses wouldn’t have been able to answer even if they wanted to.He didn’t feel his left hand at all.But he thought he could still feel Die’s blood on his toes and his hands. He rubbed the fingers of his right hand together, trying to clean them from any evidence that Die’s blood was ever there. But it still felt as if the blood soaked in so deep that he couldn’t get rid of it.Die’s blood on his hands.Toshiya hurt.Kaoru gone.Kyo closed his eyes and pressed his lips tightly together. And he didn’t know if he wanted it all to be a dream or reality.***“Kyo-kun?”A touch of very cold fingertips on his cheek.“Kyo-kun?”Slowly, very tiredly Kyo opened his eyes.At first he couldn’t focus on the picture before him, it was just a blurry shape, like a very colourful shadow. But then slowly the vision came back to him.“Kyo-kun” Ryuu smiled, relieved. “How are you feeling?”Kyo tried to respond, but all that came out was a slurred ‘kaaayyyyy’.“You sure you ok?” Ryuu smiled. He definitely looked very happy.Kyo managed one curt nod and then closed his eyes for a moment, because even from this small movement he suddenly felt dizzy.“Don’t worry, your doctor told me you’ve been drugged to avoid the pain and the psychological trauma, so that’s why you’re feeling a bit… funny.”“D-die?” Kyo managed to utter through his swollen, unmoving lips.“He’s alive.”For a moment Ryuu’s smile faltered, but he quickly returned it, just slightly gentler.“He suffered quite a lot of injuries, but he’s alive and he’ll be fine.”Kyo opened his eyes and looked at Ryuu pleadingly.“Kaoru is fine as well, a little bit scratched and roughened up, but he’s the only one of the four of you who got away easily. He’s already out of bed, but constantly stays at Die’s side.”Ryuu paused, perhaps thinking how to deliver the last news.“We found Toshiya as well. He’ll be fine with time. Though he might not be able to walk as well as he used to…”Kyo stared at Ryuu, his eyes pleading for an explanation that his drugged mind would understand.“His knee was injured irreparably, so… he’ll be lucky to learn to walk with crutches. Doctors say there’s nothing that they can do for him.”Kyo turned his eyes away from Ryuu. He felt a hand descend on his shoulder and heard Ryuu’s comforting voice:“At least the four of you made it out alive, Kyo. It was extremely dangerous and your friends were no soldiers. I’m happy they found you and didn’t manage to get themselves killed.”Kyo nodded, trying to force the tears back down. He didn’t want to cry – knew there was nothing to cry about – but he couldn’t help but feel guilty his friends got involved in what wasn’t their fight. They all got hurt because of him.“Don’t you want to know about the extent of your injuries, Kyo-kun?” Ryuu asked tentatively.Kyo turned his eyes back to Ryuu and stared as if Ryuu just told him something ridiculous.Kyo didn’t care about his injuries. Whatever it was, he was going to be fine.“The biggest problem is your hand. Doctors are trying to return the feeling to your whole hand and fingers. If they won’t succeed, you might not be able to fully use your hand and it will not be as flexible as it used to. But well… there’s nothing else that is very worrying. All the other injuries you received during your time in capture will heal in time. Your mental treatment was already resumed, so in about two or three weeks you’ll be able to continue the healing back at home. Your doctor is hopeful that this lapse in your mental treatment caused by your captivity won’t do any permanent damage.”Kyo nodded slightly, still not caring at all to hear all of that.“See… To… Totchi…”“No” Ryuu immediately shook his head. “You’re strictly under the bed regime and you’re not getting out if this bed as long as the doctor will tell you. And don’t bother trying to go out alone – there’s guard on this floor and you won’t be able to step further than the threshold of this room. And that’s final.”Kyo wanted to argue, wanted to demand to be let to see Toshiya, wanted to plead, but his body felt so heavy, his eyes so tired, his mind so out of this world. He wasn’t even sure when Ryuu left. He just drifted off to shallow sleep, even though he tried to resist it.***Three-one-six.Three-one-seven.Three-one-eight.Step by step he was getting closer to his goal. Slowly, but assuredly.Three-one-nine.Three-two-zero.They didn’t let him out of his ward for two weeks and four days. And it was way too long to go without seeing Toshiya. Three-two-one.Three-two-two.And finally – three-two-three.Kyo stopped and looked at the number on the door. He hesitated for a moment, just staring. Then he took a deep breath and grabbed the handle, pushing the door open.He slowly went inside and closed the door behind him. The beds in the room were empty and just one of them at the end of the room was occupied. A curtain was drawn to shield the bed from the view. Kyo took in a shuddering breath and started moving. He slowly made his way forward and when he reached the bed, he pulled the curtain away.He was greeted by the sight of Toshiya’s leg hanging in the air, put into a thick white cast. Then his eyes moved upwards and met Toshiya’s surprised ones.“K-kyo?” Toshiya uttered disbelievingly.“Totchi” Kyo let out a sigh of relief.“They told me you’re OK, that you’re here as well, but they didn’t let me see you!”“I’m fine!” Kyo waved his healthy hand impatiently, silencing Toshiya. He sat on the edge of the bed heavily.“Kyo-kun, your arm…”Toshiya stared at Kyo’s arm, bandaged from his wrist right up to his shoulder.Kyo ignored Toshiya’s comment and with his healthy arm took Toshiya’s hand in his, squeezing gently.“Toshiya, Ryuu told me everything about your condition, but I wanted to see you desperately myself and they didn’t let me up until today. I’m so happy you’re… alive.”Toshiya smiled sadly to him and just stared Kyo in the eyes. They looked at each other for a while, not finding any words to express what they were feeling at that moment. Finally, Toshiya parted his lips just the slightest, as if he was inviting Kyo to kiss him and Kyo forgot everything else. He leaned down and gently touched Toshiya’s lips with his.Kyo savoured the moment, enjoying the shivers running down all over his body just from that one simple kiss.“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you, Kyo” Toshiya said, looking Kyo right in the eyes.“It’s fine, it doesn’t matter now.”The Emperor was dead. The new era was just about to start. And Kyo couldn’t care less about any of that at that moment.“Ryuu told me what happened to you after I was gone” Kyo said.“It doesn’t matter now” Toshiya smiled “We’re all here, we’re all alive, we’re all fine.”Kyo smiled sadly.“I own you and Kaoru and Die my life.”“You would have done exactly the same, Kyo…” Toshiya said and Kyo just nodded grimly.“Now when I finally was let out of my ward, I’ll be here all the time, Totchi. Hope you don’t mind.”“Not at all” Toshiya grinned, for the first time since he woke up in the hospital looking really genuinely happy.Toshiya wanted to ask where their relationship stood now, after all that was said and done, but he didn’t want to ruin the happy illusion that Kyo still wanted him.But when Kyo kept gripping Toshiya’s hand in his throughout the entire time he was at Toshiya’s bedside, Toshiya couldn’t help but feel hopeful.***The amount of bandages on Die’s face made Kyo avert his eyes for a second. The IV, the neck support, the thickly bandaged shoulder – it was all Kyo’s fault. He turned around and took a step to flee. He didn’t want to face Die, he didn’t think he could handle the accusing looks and words, but a figure in front of him made Kyo stop.Kaoru looked just like he always did. Freshly dressed, with his hair framing his strict, angular face, his lips pressed tightly together and his eyes, sharp and lively, watching Kyo like a hawk. The only sign that he was in any kind of battle were a few healing bruises on his chin and arms.“Kaoru” Kyo uttered despite himself. He felt relieved to really see for himself all of his friends alive and relatively fine. But he wasn’t sure he was ready to face neither Kaoru, nor Die just yet.“You’re not going to go in and say hi to Die?” Kaoru asked.Kyo stood frozen to the spot, waiting for Kaoru’s reaction, waiting for Kaoru to say something Kyo was afraid to hear. But when Kaoru closed the distance between them and pushed Kyo towards himself and embraced him in his strong arms, Kyo wasn’t expecting that. He relaxed immediately, feeling Kaoru so close to him, feeling the warmth from Kaoru’s body and smelling the remains of his light perfume.“Ryuu visited me and said you’re fine, but I wasn’t allowed to see you. I was so worried” Kaoru muttered almost right into Kyo’s ear.“I’m OK” Kyo uttered, gripping the sides of Kaoru’s shirt in his fists. “I’m OK…”He could finally breathe.Totchi was alive.Kaoru and Die were alive. He was safely out of the Palace, safe from any more humiliations and torture.Safe.“I’m sorry I lied to you, Kyo. I’m sorry I made you believe I was in love with you. I’m so very sorry.”Kyo shook his head.“It doesn’t matter now, Kaoru. What’s done is done. I’m not angry with you or with anybody else.”There was a moment of silence and then Kyo could feel Kaoru’s body relaxing, accepting Kyo’s forgiveness. Kaoru pulled back slightly and looked Kyo in the face.“Totchi won’t be able to walk…”“He will” Kyo interjected, nodding his head confidently. “He just needs time.”There was a hint of hesitation in Kaoru’s face, but he didn’t say anything anymore.“And Die’s face is ruined…”“Can doctors do anything about it?” Kyo asked.“They’ll try. But he’s never going to look the same…”The amount of grief in Kaoru’s face stabbed Kyo’s heart painfully and he put his healthy hand on Kaoru’s cheek, trying not to touch his bruised chin.“I’m so sorry, Kaoru-kun…”Kaoru nodded. He looked at Kyo’s bandaged arm and his face darkened even more.“Is it getting better?”“My arm? Yes, but slowly though… it might never be as good as new.”Kaoru nodded again, maybe just so he could accept information for what it was. There was nothing he could do to change things.“Let’s go in, Kyo, Die’s asking about you all the time. He feels sorry he was such a prick to you before. But he’s, well… he can be a jealous bastard sometimes.”Kyo smiled and finally let go of Kaoru.“I’m… I don’t really….”“Don’t be stupid, Kyo, he’s really worried about you. And he’s really sorry. Come on, let’s go in.”Kaoru took Kyo’s hand and led him inside Die’s ward. The warmth radiating from Kaoru’s palm spread through Kyo’s entire body and it made him finally calm down. As soon as they entered, Die turned his head to see who was coming in. As soon as he saw Kyo, his only eye that was not bandaged widened in surprise.Kyo would have stopped right there, but Kaoru’s presence behind him made him move forward. They neared Die’s bed and stopped. Kyo, unable to look Die in the face, lowered his head. He didn’t know exactly why he was so afraid of Die, but part of him knew Die never dealt with jealousy well. And Kaoru was indulging Kyo’s fantasies about them being a couple for quite a while, when Die was Kaoru’s partner for a long time already.Kyo wasn’t sure Die would soon forget that.“Hey, Kyo” Die’s soft voice reached Kyo’s ears.It surprised Kyo how weak and rough Die’s voice was, how tired it still sounded. He lifted his eyes then and looked at his friend.“Hi.”For a few moments it was completely silent, then Kyo gathered enough courage to speak.“Die, I’m so sorry I didn’t do more to help you and you… you were hurt so badly…I’m…”“It’s not your fault, Kyo” Die interrupted him softly. It looked a lot like he was too tired to even speak. “I volunteered to go and I knew what I was getting myself into.”Kyo nodded once, accepting Die’s answer. He then put his hands to his sides, pressing them there tightly and bowed with his whole upper body, as low as he could.“I cannot express how grateful I am to you for saving me, Die-san.”There was silence so thick that Kyo was afraid to even move a muscle. Then he saw Die’s hand slowly reach for his wrist and grab it, pulling Kyo closer to the bed. Kyo stumbled, but Die didn’t let him go. As soon as Kyo was next to him, Die grabbed Kyo’s other wrist and pulled him down gently and hugged him, as much as his bandages and IV and Kyo’s unhealthy hand let.The smell of the medicines this close to Die was very strong. Die’s hands felt weak and were trembling slightly and Kyo was afraid to move a muscle in case he hurt Die even more.“The five of us are like brothers, Kyo. Please, don’t ever forget that.”Out of nowhere Kyo felt tears gather in his eyes, but he pushed them back down with a lot of effort. His arms shook slightly as he returned Die’s hug awkwardly.“I won’t ever forget it again” Die chuckled dryly, sounding like he reprimanded himself a little.Kyo nodded, unsure what else he could possible say. Then Die’s hands loosened up around him and Kyo straightened back up. Kaoru was immediately by his side and offered him a smile.“When Die will be out of here, we’ll all meat and celebrate your rescue. And we’ll have a drink for Shinya – all of us.”Kyo nodded. He hasn’t visited Shinya’s grave yet. He couldn’t face his friend, feeling like he caused Shinya’s death. But now, after the Emperor was dead, after Shinya’s death was avenged, after Kyo did the best he could to help that happen, he thought maybe he finally deserved absolution.“But your face, Die…” Kyo uttered, still feeling guilty.Die’s face immediately darkened, but he kept his lips pressed tight together not to frown.“He’ll be having a few surgeries soon” Kaoru suggested, looking worried. “And Ryuu said we don’t need to worry about the money.”“I’ll be fine, Kyo” Die said, though his voice sounded slightly strained.Kyo nodded, yet again unsure of what he should say.He stayed at Die’s bedside for a while longer, but then excused himself to go back to Toshiya. When he left, he felt easier in his heart. He felt like maybe he hasn’t lost any more of his friends after all.~~~ 5 months later ~~~
“So, how’s it going?”
Ryuu was leaning on the counter in Kyo’s kitchen, holding a cup of coffee in his hand. Dressed in a dark-blue suit and white shirt he looked misplaced in Kyo’s quite messy kitchen. It’s been five months since The Emperor was dead and since Kyo almost died. And many things have changed.Toshiya’s family was OK thankfully, they rebuilt their everyday lives and moved on. Kaoru’s father managed to get another job and his mother’s injuries healed, but they were struggling more than they used to. Still, Toshiya was hopeful that his father, with Ryuu’s promise to help, would manage to find a better paying job soon. Die’s parents, after losing everything they had, were not doing so well and Die put forward his savings to help rebuild his family’s business. His brother though was unable to work as a hairdresser anymore, as his hands never healed fully.Die had his operations, but when all the bandages were removed after the last one, Kyo barely kept himself from crying. Die’s face bore ugly burn scars, one side of his lips was disfigured. Half of his face looked like he was dipped in acid and the skin just melted down.Die didn’t take it easy. The few times Kyo called, Kaoru’s voice was strained and tired. He said Die didn’t blame anybody and wasn’t actually voicing his anger, but it took time for him to let Kaoru touch his face and kiss his lips again.Toshiya was relearning how to walk. But Kyo was happy he could walk at all. And Totchi was putting on a brave face for Kyo, so most of the time Kyo fooled himself in believing there was nothing wrong with Toshiya. And himself…He felt like if he stopped taking the medicine, all hell would break loose. He wasn’t sure after all he went through being captive in the Palace he could handle reality without the pills. He still was jobless, but the generous amount he got for helping Ryuu let him stay out of work for a while longer. So when Ryuu asked this simple question, Kyo felt like he had no simple answer.“Is everything with you and Toshiya-san ok?” Ryuu offered, feeling the silence was stretching too long.“It is” Kyo nodded. At least of that he was sure. “Totchi came back home and I’m taking care of him. He’s going to physiotherapy every day.”“What about your hand?”“It’s fine” Kyo dismissed the concern immediately. “If I was a guitarist, I’d be screwed, but since I’m not, it doesn’t matter. My hand is fine. I wouldn’t probably be able to do needlework, but anything else that doesn’t require such precision would be fine with me.”“I’m happy to hear that” Ryuu smiled. “It’s a bit unfortunate you haven’t found a job yet.”“I don’t need one right now” Kyo shrugged. He was standing opposite Ryuu, leaning on the table and watching his guest with interest. Ryuu never visited before, only called.“What if I were to propose you one?” Ryuu smiled.Kyo lifted his eyebrow in question.“You see, Kyo, up until now you’re the only one who came back from the Moon and is lucid. And as you understand, the Moon program needs to go on. We need it.”Kyo’s eyes widened and he started shaking his head firmly.“No! I am not going back there! No!”“I’m not asking you to!” Ryuu hurried to explain seeing so much fear radiating from Kyo’s whole body. “We will continue the program, but we will let people apply by themselves. They’ll be able to go for 2 years, have a very good pay and be able to communicate with their families anytime they want. And we’ll put up to four people in one station to avoid solitude. The conditions will be much better and much safer from now on and we already have people interested in this job, as the pay is very good. What I want from you, Kyo-san, is to train them. To prepare them for the life up there. And you won’t ever be forced to go back there. I give you my word.”Kyo stared at Ryuu, looking slightly surprised.“I’ll give you time to think about it, Kyo, but I expect you’ll say yes. Maybe it will be hard at first to remember your life up there, but think what a difference you can make for those who will go there. Your experience is invaluable and useful.”Kyo still stared at Ryuu, but his face relaxed and it didn’t look like he was ready to bolt from the room.“I’ll think about it.”Ryuu nodded.“I’ll send you full job description to your email. Please, do look it over before deciding.”The smile Ryuu had on his face told Kyo he thought Kyo would agree anyway and it made Kyo a little bit irritated. But Ryuu always had that know-it-all attitude about himself.“So, how have you been doing, Ryuu?” Kyo asked, trying to change the subject.“Great” Ryuu smiled. “Though I’m buried so deep with so many things to do I barely see daylight! But I’m not complaining, this is my dream coming true. The Emperor is dead and the new, better life is ahead for all of us.”“You never told me what he did to you to make you hate him so much” Kyo said as a matter of fact, but his sharp look never left Ryuu’s face even for a second.Ryuu looked at Kyo and for once it didn’t look like he was going to change the subject. He looked like for once he was really considering to finally tell Kyo the truth about his life.“It’s a very banal story” finally Ryuu said. “He made my life hell and I wanted revenge.”Kyo kept looking at Ryuu, waiting for more.“Listen, Kyo” Ryuu sighed. “Grant me this one wish. Please.”Kyo stared Ryuu in the eyes, waiting. Even though he knew what Ryuu was about to say next.“Please, don’t ask me about that ever again.”The plea in Ryuu’s eyes was much too obvious. And the pain behind the smile on his face was still there.Kyo nodded. It wasn’t like he had any right to make Ryuu confess all about his darkest and miserable days.“I don’t know how I managed to successfully weave my life into two different paths. I don’t know how I managed to gain Emperor’s trust and to find the resistance members and become a member of their family at the same time. How I even became one of the leaders of theirs. But right at this moment, this very moment here with you after all that’s been said and done, I can tell you I’m really happy. Whatever has happened, it’s in the past. And I never look back.”Ryuu fell silent and Kyo just stared at him. And at that moment they both felt so close as never before. Brought together by a dead Emperor.Suddenly footsteps and a strange clicking was heard.Kyo’s face lit up with a smile and he turned his head to the kitchen door. Soon enough Toshiya appeared there, walking slowly with a stick that Kyo gave him as a present (it was black and carved, didn’t look that practical at all and more suitable for one of Toshiya’s photo-shoots, but Toshiya loved it and used it when they went out).“Oh, hey, Ryuu” Toshiya greeted the guest. “I didn’t know you were here” he smiled apologetically.“I stopped by for a few minutes only” Ryuu smiled. “I’ll be going already. It’s good to see you up and about, Toshiya-san.”“Thank you” Toshiya smiled. He walked the last few steps to the table and sat on the chair heavily. Even though he could walk with just a stick, he still felt tired too soon. Though his physiotherapist was optimistic and said Toshiya’s legs will soon be strong enough to make the walking easier for him.“See you around, Toshiya-san” Ryuu said.“I’ll see you out” Kyo smiled and they both were gone from the kitchen in a moment.Toshiya didn’t have to wait long for Kyo to come back.“Ready?” Toshiya asked, smiling gently at Kyo.“Yeah…” Kyo half shrugged, putting his hands in his pockets. “I’ll get the car from the garage.”“OK. I’ll lock and see you outside.”Kyo nodded and left the kitchen again. It was long overdue, but finally they all were as ready as they’ll ever be. All four of them visiting Shinya’s grave together. And Toshiya was happy Kyo could finally face Shinya for the last time. After all, it never was his fault to begin with.None of it was Kyo’s fault.~~~ 3 months later ~~~
Toshiya yawned sleepily and cracked his eyes open.
The sun was seeping through the gap in the curtains and leaving a straight line of gold on the sheets. He curled up under the blanket and closed his eyes again. For a few seconds his mind was blank and he tried hard to remember what day it was and was he supposed to get up and do anything at all. But then, a few moments later, he finally remembered – it was Sunday morning and there was absolutely nothing he had to do.He smiled and stretched his body lazily.“So you finally deigned to wake up.”Kyo’s voice was surprisingly close to his ear. Toshiya opened his eyes and saw Kyo lying at the edge of the bed, separated from him by a golden line.“What’s the time?” Toshiya murmured.“Almost ten.”“Mhh… so… what’s for breakfast?”“Do I look like I started cooking something?”Toshiya grinned sleepily.“I guess not.”Toshiya stared at Kyo through his half-opened eyes, loving the blond ruffled locks and Kyo’s dark as night eyes.“Totchi, there is something I was meaning to ask you for a while now, but I never seemed to find a good opportunity or time. And this morning after I woke up and watched you sleep, I understood that there’s never going to be a perfect time.”The nervousness in Kyo’s voice made Toshiya get worried immediately.“What I wanted to ask is… You know how I love the miso soup that you make. I love anything you make me, but I just love your miso soup.”“Kyo, what-““Toshiya, I was thinking…. I wanted to ask…”Kyo stopped abruptly as if irritated by his own nervousness and took in a quick shallow breath.“Toshiya, will you keep making me miso every morning?” *Toshiya stared, confused. But like in a flash of lighting he dotted all the i’s and crossed the t’s and stared at Kyo in disbelief.Kyo looked back at him nervously, waiting.“Is that… is that what you really want?” Toshiya uttered.Kyo nodded.“Until the day I die.”Toshiya stared, but despite himself he felt a smile creep up on his lips and stay there.“Is that a yes?” Kyo inquired, still looking nervous.“Yes” Toshiya nodded. “Oh God, yes!”He pulled his hand out from under the blanket and pushed it towards Kyo. Kyo stretched his hand out as well and met Toshiya’s one. Their fingers intertwined and stayed there, unmoving as if turned into stone. The golden line cut right through the middle of their linked hands, running over the skin and putting a golden string on Kyo and Toshiya’s ring fingers. And they just kept looking each other in the eyes, smiling.THE END* Japanese propose by asking “please make me miso every day/morning” ;) Something I found out by accident and immediately thought it was perfect for this story :)***Sorry again for the horrible delay! At least I know x_soleil_x was waiting for the last chapter :) There wasn’t much interest in this story by the end of it anyway :(A quick note about the last scene. I’m not implying Kyo literary proposed to Toshiya. It was more like saying “will you be by my side for the rest of my life” rather than “marry me”. But that was a way of Kyo to say “I love you” without actually saying it (yet). So there :)About Ryuu. I always intended to reveal what the Emperor did to him, but writing this last chapter I changed my mind. A rushed, emotionless explanation of that happened to him would just ruin the mood of the story and it is not really essential what happened. Let’s leave a little mystery floating around his persona! :P lolWell then, it would be really nice to get your feedback and comments, but I kind of lost that hope a few chapters ago… Still, for those who were reading and are happy with the ending I offered, thank you ^^This is probably the last fanfic I wrote, but I don’t feel sad about it. I can move on to writing other things now :)While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
